Ask Grey’s Anatomy Part 2 - 4/15/09
Creating something intensely beautiful - Executive producer Betsy Beers answers questions sent in by Grey’s Anatomy fans.

Question: What’s your favorite episode out of the 100 that have been filmed? – Stephanie Freemansburg, Pennsylvania
Betsy Beers: Well Stephanie that’s a really hard question cause there’ve been a hundred and out of a hundred I’ve got a lot of favorite episodes. I think that certainly one of the ones that pops up for me is the finale of season 2 which is the prom episode. A lot of stuff happened and you were really, really excited to just see Meredith and Derek get together and I was really, sad about Doc their dog. And super sad about Denny dying and Izzie wore that really, really great dress. I think that’s a lot of people favorite probably and that always comes to mind because it had such a huge impact and everyone loves a good prom. Nothing like a good prom.

Question: What happened to the “seriouslys”? – Elise, North Carolina
Betsy Beers: Well Elise I think you can still get “seriously” on a t-shirt more likely than not on your ABC website. So if you’re still sorta loving your “seriously” there are some products you can buy with it. I think like “seriously” like anything, any kind of expression among friends came and went. I think that we all sort of talk in periods of time when we use certain expressions, and I think “seriously” kind of ran its course and I think we all kind of decided maybe we weren’t so “seriously” anymore.

Question: How do you come up with the character names? – Michael, Massachusetts
Betsy Beers: Shonda has a deep well of names that she picks from. Sometimes they are the names of people she know but often it’s just the sound or the character, it feels like the name and I think that’s how she goes about doing it.

Question: What shows do you watch when you are not making Grey’s Anatomy? – Brenda, Essex England
Betsy Beers: Brenda, I watch a lot of television I gotta say. First of all, of course I watch Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice cause I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t watch the shows. But I also like a lot of different shows. I like a lot of reality shows. I like a certain amount of drama. I like 24 because it’s really, really different than the kinds of shows we’re making. I think Lost is great, I like Samantha Who. I love 30 Rock. I like Project Runway. And you know what else, I love those shows where you look at houses. I love those shows where they take you to look at different houses and you look to see what houses people buy. And I love shows about decorating houses, I don’t know, I think I just love houses.

Question: Has anyone on the cast actually been hurt while filming? – Shannon Gilmartin, New York
Betsy Beers: Oh wow! That would be bad, that would hurt and that would really bad. No, you know the actors are really pretty coordinated bunch I think and we keep them away from scalpels as much as we can when we’re not using them to cut into bodies. I don’t think we’ve really had any huge accident, maybe a couple of bumps or scrapes but nothing I ever heard about and I probably would have heard about it if it was pretty bad.

Question: It was nice to see Denny back this season. Any plans for him to return later? – Kayleigh, Illinois
Betsy Beers: Kayleigh, Denny’s dead. I know you may not believe it but Denny’s dead. Denny will probably continue to be dead, whether or not we see Denny dead again, I don’t have a clue.

Question: What surgery is the most memorable and emotional to you? – Emily, Pennsylvania
Betsy Beers: That’s another one of those questions Emily, because there have been so many surgeries that I found really incredibly moving. I think certainly the pole and the train, there’s a train accident and there’s a pole between two people. It’s actually from pretty early on because that was the first surgery that, it’s actually an extraction and then a surgery, but that was one of the first times we were able to do something incredibly intensely visual that makes you realize what a body can go through. And that was maybe, although we got a lot of surgeries that have stuck in our heads, there have been multiple births, the domino surgery that we did recently I thought was incredible but it was the visual of two people stuck on a pole was pretty, pretty intense.

SPOILERFIX SPOILAGE

Updated on May 3, 2009

Grey's Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. The series was renewed for a sixth season.

Episode 5.22: What a Difference a Day Makes (fka "Beautiful Day") (100th episode)
Airdate: May 7, 2009

* 04/23 - [Will Jeffrey Dean Morgan be appearing in Grey's Anatomy's 100th episode?] Exhibit A: Morgan appeared in the 100th ep photo-op, which took place on the Grey's set during filming of the said 100th episode. Exhibit B: The official logline for the landmark ep says, "Izzie fears the worst when she begins experiencing familiar symptoms." Source: The Ausiello Files
* 04/22 - As Meredith, Derek and all of their friends prepare for the big wedding, a group of college students, injured in a car crash as they were heading to their graduation ceremony, is admitted to the ER. Meanwhile, Izzie fears the worst when she begins experiencing familiar symptoms. Source: ABC
* 04/17 - [From an email sent to Kristin:] "One of my coworkers was in Los Angeles on business, and when I called her and told her about Grey's filming the wedding scene, she freaked and found the set. She was there for the lunch break (she said there were two or three paps there too) but she said later Katherine Heigl was standing in the doorway with T.R. Knight , and she was smoking in a wedding dress. She had a big jacket/robe thing over it, but she said there was no doubt it was a wedding dress. She said Katherine was only in the doorway a minute or two before they called her back in, but she has no doubt that it was a wedding dress." Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 04/13 - And as reported by Shonda Rhimes herself, Derek and Mer are supposed to be getting married in the upcoming 100th episode, and Izzie's dying wish is to give them the wedding she may or may not be able to ever have herself. Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 04/13 - Via his Twitter account, Ausiello gave two clues regarding the wedding: It's not **e* and ***s***a. It's not *** C***f and A***e. Source: Ausiello's Twitter Account [Note: The first clue seems to be "It's not Owen and Cristina. As for the second one, it may be "It's not the Chief and Adele.]
* 04/05 - The wedding taking place in the 100th episode on May 7? It's not Mer-Der after all! Source: The Ausiello Files
* 04/05 - At a party marking the filming of Grey's Anatomy's 100th episode, series creator Shonda Rhimes confirmed that the milestone hour will air May 7 - and indicated that it might feature the nuptials of the show's central couple. "The only thing I'll tell you about the 100th episode is that it takes place on Meredith and Derek's wedding day," Rhimes told the Associated Press at the show's celebration. "That's big," Rhimes underscored, "and that's all I'm going to say." Of course, were one to be hyper-analytical and parse words, it's not for certain that the Mer-Der wedding goes without a hitch. For one, it would represent a mighty short engagement (he will have only non-proposed six weeks prior). Secondly, this is Meredith and Derek we are talking about. Thirdly and perhaps most importantly, Rhimes has previously said that the wedding taking place toward season's end would be a "surprise." Now, is that "surprise" as in the aforementioned short engagement or "surprise" as in the couple that emerges at the end of the aisle is not the same one that started down it? Source: TV Guide Online
* 04/05 - Over at Grey's, series creator Shonda Rhimes has already confirmed that one of the show's couples will tie the knot later this season, and there's increasingly loud buzz that the event will take place on May 7, during the show's landmark 100th episode, appropriately titled "Beautiful Day." Adding to the speculation: The episode will feature a minister. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 02/08 - Nathan, a male intern is eager to impress the doctors. He brags about doing a chest tube correctly on his first try. Later, he is upset because he thinks he may have killed a baby during a procedure. A female doctor will reassure him that the baby will be fine. Source: SpoilerFix.com
* 11/20/2008 - Nathan: Male intern, mid 20's, Bi-racial (African American & Caucasian). He is smart and funny; a boy next door type. Recurring Guest Star. Source: SpoilerTV

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

General Spoilers:
* 04/22 - Owen doesn't have time for Cristina anymore (what with his newfound interest in turning George into a trauma surgeon). Actually, to be more specific, Owen's therapist doesn't let Owen have time for her. Yep, Owen's shrink has given him a specific list of three-word sentences he can say to Yang, but "I love you" is definitely not one of them. Either way, Cristina is not a happy camper. Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 04/05 - [Cristina and Owen] are far from over. As Kevin McKidd himself told EW's Jennifer Armstrong, the exes will be thrown "a huge curveball that neither of them see coming. Just as he starts to get over his thing, something else happens. Which is good and bad. It's like, 'Oh my God, this is big.' It will be interesting to see how it leads into next season." Source: The Ausiello Files
* 02/27 - The show may be giving Meredith another long-lost sibling -- this one a byproduct of her mother's affair with the Chief. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 02/23 - The latest Grey's Anatomy rumor making the rounds has Shonda Rhimes mulling a bait and switch that would find terminally ill Izzie living and George dying. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 02/12 - According to inside sources who work on Grey's, it is likely that Heigl and Knight will make an exit at the end of the current season. Both have asked to leave the show. However, ABC
needs to sign off on letting them out of their contracts, which has not been done. Source: Kristin on E!Online

* new 02/02 - [Bailey] receives some potentially career-altering news. [...] Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse [between Cristina and Owen] that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 01/25 - [Denny]'ll be around at least through March, since that's when Izzie's aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed. [...] Sources confirm [that Faye Dunaway] has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/12/2008 - New details are emerging about Jennifer Westfeldt's forthcoming arc as a patient on Grey's Anatomy. Or, I should say, new detail : She's married to Angels in America's Ben Shenkman. [...] He's not dropping by Seattle Grace to keep vigil at his ailing wife's bedside. According to a Grey's insider, he's a patient, too -- and a critical one at that. Like Westfeldt, Shenkman is signed on for multiple episodes. [...] [Eric Stoltz's serial killer character] is there to receive medical attention after he suffers a major beat down in prison. [T.R. Knight, who plays George, is in talks to be released from the show.] Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - Izzie's hallucinations are health-related -- and brain-related. And although the specific name of the ailment is being kept in the safe underneath Rhimes' desk, I'm told it's similar to an aneurysm. And every time it flares up, she sees Denny. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - A source close to the show tells me, "The reason [the actor] has not been on is because [he or she] has been a pain in the ass lately, trying to change scenes and dialogue, being hard to work with and putting up an attitude. The higher-ups were getting tired of it, so they tweaked [him or her] out of some episodes. That's why you haven't really seen [him or her] lately." A second source seconds that emotion: "[He or she] is not really getting along too well with producers right now." Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/26/2008 - Jennifer Westfeldt is joining Grey's Anatomy for a multi-episode arc. [... She] is coming on as a patient. [... The crossover will] take place over the course of three episodes (Feb. 5, 12, and 19) and the only confirmed participant as of now is Kate Walsh. [...] Denny will be haunting Izzie at least through February. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/20/2008 - "I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie, and Alex is among the most interesting we've ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can't wait for our viewers to see where we're taking it. But what it won't involve is Izzie having a brain tumor," [Shonda Rhimes revealed... Denny will] be in at least five episodes. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/08/2008 - Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps. Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut). Source: TV Guide Online
* 11/06/2008 - A female patient named Natalie wants to leave the hospital because she'll get fired from her job at a bar if she misses any more shifts. As the doctor taking care of her fixes a bandage before she goes, he notices that Natalie has many scars. Natalie also tells the male doctor that she's been flirting with him all day and that he should have reciprocated. Source: SpoilerFix.com [Note: This was set to occur around episode 9. It's unknown if it's been pushed to another episode or dropped.]
* 11/04 /2008- [The show] is now casting "star names only" for a "former military nurse who is maternal." Cristina most definitely has a "Major" romance coming on! Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/02/2008 - Jessica Capshaw (The L Word, The Practice) will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who's called in to consult on a case and winds up butting heads with Bailey. I hear that Capshaw has signed on for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more, and that she will make her first appearance midway through the season. Source: LA Times
* 08/28/2008 - [Dr. Addison Montgomery] may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. "I don't know if it's going to work with the story, and we don't want her to come back for a visit if it doesn't feel important, something only Addison can do," says Rhimes. "But the idea is on the table." Source: Entertainment Weekly

Grey’s exclusive: Denny bids farewell to Izzie – May 1, 2009

Okay, now he's really dead.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan confirms that he'll reprise his role as Denny on Grey's Anatomy before the end of the season. But then that's it. Really.

"I can confirm that I will be coming back one more time," he revealed to us at last night's Hollywood premiere of Star Trek. "I think it will be done after that. I think I have been on the Grey's Anatomy set for the last time."

Morgan wouldn't say when exactly Denny turns up, but I can confirm that he'll reappear as a figment of Izzie's cancer-ravaged imagination in next Thursday's wedding-themed 100th episode. "Denny has a reason to show up," Morgan teases, "and it is probably tied to Izzie's health."

Given the number of times Denny has returned to Grey's since croaking three years ago, Morgan states the obvious when he says, "I think they're regretting killing me off a little bit. But it's done and it's been great and I love those people. [Series creator] Shonda Rhimes gave me the opportunity of a lifetime."

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Parental Controls

Meredith's dad returns to make amends, but it's the chief's apology that counts the most. Meanwhile, Izzie's mother shows up to "help" her through her cancer treatment.

Anybody else now anxiously awaiting their invite to the Mer-Der nuptials? I am now. The sight of Derek in his fancy-schmancy tux really pushed me over the edge of excitement — and also reminded me of how intensely I used to crush on him the first few seasons before I was numbed by everyone's constant fawning over him. It also brought home the fact that they're finally getting married, and I felt as thrilled for them as I would be for my own long-suffering-in-love friends. That, incidentally, is the magic of Grey's Anatomy: We feel like we've been through everything with these people, and we love them like real-life friends even when they annoy us.

Speaking of friends, Callie and Mark have become one of my favorite BFF pairings on TV, and I've grown perfectly content to see them as nothing more — despite their earlier on-call-room dalliances. They have some great small moments of friendship, none more so than tonight when Mark told Callie he had a present for her, and she told him she didn't want his pity money, but then was disappointed to find out he wasn't offering her cash. He said it was better than that, and took her to a patient. ''She fell out of a tree and broke all her limbs,'' he told her. Her response: ''Oooh, this is better.'' Another reason we love our Grey's: dark-and-twistiness.

The focus soon switched from friends to family, though, as Meredith and Lexie's dad — 29 days out of rehab, apparently — showed up in the Chief's office to make amends. And when the Chief recommended some support groups in the area because he's been there himself, Thatcher (whose wife, you know, spent years cheating on him with the Chief) even said, ''that's one more thing we have in common.'' Awwwkward. Though apparently the Chief was hell-bent on making his own kind of amends with old Thatch because soon enough, he was paging the Grey girls into his office. ''Did we kill anyone lately and don't remember?'' Meredith asked Lexie, wondering what the urgent matter was. But the Chief simply wanted to beg the ladies to hear their dad out. They (begrudgingly, in Meredith's case) did, and then Meredith declared coldly, ''Congratulations. You seem well. Good luck.'' She calmly left, leaving Lexie to hug it out with the dad who didn't abandon her.

Things just got more parent-tastic from there when Sharon Lawrence showed up as Izzie's mom. The first thing out of her mouth: ''Excuse me, young and yummy doctor.'' Yeah, that was to Alex. Awwwkward, once again. No matter though, she was thrilled to find out he was Izzie's BF, and thrilled to be clucking around Izzie's hospital room in her totally-Forever 21 hot pink off-the-shoulder top. Izzie wondered aloud who the hell called her mom and asked her to come, and, well, who could blame her? Mom was doing Izzie's Tarot cards and calling her psychic to see how the whole cancer thing would turn out — and for the record, her phone psychic felt skin cancer was treatable if caught early enough. ''That's great,'' Izzie sighed. ''A psychic with Internet access.'' Mom was a little worried, though, because she'd watched an episode of Tyra (brilliant!) about a girl whose cancer started with a ''mole on her privates'': ''It was bad. She was bald and everything.''

Has the Fake Grey's Wedding Registry Raised Cash? - May 4, 2009
The Grey's Anatomy wedding has me curious: Is their fake wedding registry on the Knot getting any response from people in real life? —GreyLife, Oregon

The McDreamy McWedding is in fact spurring real donations to real charities, via the gift registry on the Knot website. In honor of the fictional wedding between Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey), fans are encouraged to donate to one of three charities close to the hearts of the Grey's characters, including brain-disease research.

One Grey's character has already plunked down some cash.

Care to guess who?

Izzie, of course. Head over to this brain-research charity site, operated by the American Academy of Neurology, and look at the wall of floating brains. Each represents a donation to the foundation. See the brain with stars all over it? That's Izzie's. ("Congratulations Mer!" the accompanying comment reads. "I am so happy that you and Derek are finally getting married!" So, I assume, are Parkinson's disease researchers.)

I hear that show producers, not Katherine Heigl, arranged that donation, but it's sweet nonetheless.

The donations so far are modest—search the brain wall at the site above, and you can see that a handful of people have donated in honor of the TV couple. But to the charities, the uptick is also significant.

"We're not getting tons of money," says Joyce Weidler, managing director of the American Skin Association, another of the three chosen charities. "But we are getting donations." Just last week, Weidler estimates, six people donated to the association because of the Grey's wedding registry.

The Alzheimer's Association, the third charity, also tells me it is getting more money because of Grey's as well, though it has yet to tally hard numbers. You can make your own McDonation by heading to the Knot registry.

Matt's TV Week in Review - May 3, 2009
Apology Accepted: This week’s Grey’s Anatomy was all about making amends: Thatcher with his estranged Grey daughters, the Chief with Meredith, Izzy with her over-the-top mom, and most memorably, Owen with Cristina, revealing that what looked like a brush-off was actually his way of letting her off the emotional hook. “Take care now” being a substitute for those three other words he can’t bear to say to her because it would just rub salt in her psychic (and physical) wounds. Who needs words when the looks Kevin McKidd and Sandra Oh give each other speak volumes of hurt?

Jordan - Scene 1

INT. HOSPITAL - TRAUMA ROOM #3 – DAY

Dr. Hicks assesses JORDAN, early 20's. His vitals don’t look too great, but he’s awake and agitated.

Jordon: The guy that hit us – he looked pretty bad.....

Dr. Hicks: The other doctors have stabilized him.

Jordon: I haven’t seen Dana yet. My girlfriend, she was in the back seat?

Dr. Hicks: Push another round of morphine.

Jordon: She was singing to the radio, she never knows the words to anything..... I turned around to tell her the words and then – that car hit us.

Dr. Hicks: You need to calm down, so we can treat you, you have a serious injury to your abdomen –

Jordon: I NEED to know where she is –

Dr. Hicks: I promise I will check on her as soon as I can if you stay still for me.

Jordon: She’s wearing a pink sweater.

Jordan holds Dr. Hicks’ gaze for a beat, until Dr. Hicks nods

Dr. Hicks: Okay.

End Scene 1

Jordan - Scene 2

INT. HOSPITAL - JORDAN ROOM – DAY

Dr. Hicks continues to check out JORDAN. He opens his eyes, now calmer, woozy from the drugs they’ve given him.

Dr. Hicks: BP’s going up...

Jordon: Is Dana .... Is she okay?

Dr. Hicks: As soon as I hear, I’ll let you know. Do you have her family’s contact information?

Jordon: They’re in Argentina. They’re flying in next week ... For D-Day.

Dr. Hicks: I’m sorry?

Jordon: That’s what Dana calls it. When her parents come to take her home. She’s her for the summer program at my school, an exchange thing. We always knew D-Day was coming, I tried to break up with her to make it easier... But it didn’t work. I couldn’t stay away from her.

Dr. Hicks looks down at Jordan as a Nurse enters the room.

Dr. Hicks: Can we check in with Radiology? See if they’re ready for us?

Jordon: I think ... Maybe she got out in time. Maybe she wasn’t hurt at all. ‘Cause when I turned around .... That car hit us so hard...

David - Scene 1

INT. HOSPITAL - ER – DAY

Dr. Walters meets the Paramedics as they wheel in a very bloody, barely conscious DAVID

Paramedic: 22 year old David Simon, driver of a sedan that ran a red light and side-swiped an SUV

Dr. Walters: Take him to Trauma 4.

David mumbles, barely able to speak.

David: I can’t be late. I can’t be late

Dr. Walters: Late for what?

David: Grandparents’ fiftieth anniversary. I was on my way ... Somebody let my parents know. I’m supposed to meet them there ...

Dr. Walters: Don’t worry, we’ll get a hold of them for you.

David: My whole family’s in town for it. My cousins, my sister and her kid, any aunt and uncle .....

Dr. Walters: Big day.

Dr. Walters: Someone page Dr. Smith!

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS ~ EPISODE PLAYLIST

Song Title

"What A Difference A Day Makes"

What a difference a day makes
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain

My yesterday was blue, dear
Today I'm a part of you, dear
My lonely nights are through, dear
Since you said you were mine

What a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss

It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you

What a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss

It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you

Mother’s Day comes early on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ – May 1, 2009
Izzie’s mom comes to visit her sick daughter, and Meredith battles the past.
Oh, ma.ma: Izzie’s fussing over Meredith and Derek’s wedding continued, only now, she was joined by her mother (Sharon Lawrence, best known for “NYPD Blue”). Flighty Ma.ma Stevens had trouble coming to grips with the severity of Izzie’s illness, and once she did, she went into a panic. Ultimately, Izzie had Bailey tell Ma.ma Stevens that Izzie’s cancer was practically gone so that her mother could exist in peace.

USA TODAY

TV is a 'journey' for 'Grey's' creator Shonda Rhimes - Apr 30, 2009
LOS ANGELES — Yes indeed, Denny's coming back.

The extended return of Izzie's late fiancé drew cries of protest from many Grey's Anatomy fans last fall, but he's an important part of the story that creator Shonda Rhimes wants to tell.

Q&A WITH RHIMES: She answers your questions

"We're heading on a journey," Rhimes says. Viewers "are in the middle and don't have a map, so they can feel lost. But I know where we're going. For me, it's about looking at the larger picture."

Despite a few hairpin turns, Rhimes has shown good directional sense operating two series, the fifth-season drama Grey's (ABC, tonight, 9 ET/PT) — which boasts some of TV's most passionate and vocal fans — and the second-year spinoff, Private Practice, whose season ends tonight (10 ET/PT).

Grey's, which will hit its milestone 100th episode next week, is enjoying late-season applause from many who now see how Denny fits into the larger scheme, even if they thought it took too long to get there. Practice has earned an early renewal. And Rhimes has earned the continued praise of ABC's top programmer.

"She has an incredible voice, just an ability to create characters that really sing," Stephen McPherson says. "She's probably working harder for this network and studio than anybody I know."

With two series running smoothly, that voice is also powerful. Rhimes may add to its influence with another pilot, Inside the Box, about a Washington network news bureau. It is a candidate for ABC's fall schedule.

With Grey's shooting its season finale, the pilot being polished and planning already underway for the fall season, Rhimes took time last week for a rare sit-down interview in her office, just a short walk from the Grey's set.

As executive producer of the two series, sharing supervisory duties with non-writing executive producer Betsy Beers, Rhimes says she didn't know what it would take to run two shows last year.

Shonda Rhimes answers your questions - Apr 29, 2009
Q. Hi, Shonda! I love both of your shows! (My 10-year-old daughter knows that Mommy will inexplicably yell at the TV on Thursday nights!) Anyway, I had two questions for you. What was the inspiration for Addison and Naomi's friendship (on Private Practice), and who will Violet choose? (You can e-mail the answer to the second question directly to me: I am willing to sign any and all confidentiality paperwork!) — Nikki Butler, Woodbridge, Va.
A. I loved the idea of Addison having an incredibly close friend that she knew from her college/grad school days. Naomi reminds me of my good friend Victoria, who married her college sweetheart and is strong and smart and funny. I wanted Addison to have that person who knew her "way back when."

Who will Violet choose? You really think I would TELL you that? I love that you asked, but I have to tell you what I tell everyone — watch the show and find out.

Q. As an aspiring writer/obsessive fan, I always pay attention to the credits to see who writes each episode. In particular, I enjoy the scripts that you and head writer Krista Vernoff write, though ALL of your writers are fantastic. So my question is, what serves as your inspiration or influence when you sit down to write a witty yet dramatic script? Also, what advice do you have for an aspiring writer like me OR how does a recently graduated student apply to/get involved with your writing team? A girl can dream …— Nadia Saah, Silver Spring, Md.
A. Most of the time, when I begin working on a script for one of the shows, I have an image in my head. A vivid image of something or a scene or bits of dialogue float around in my head after I've been pondering a script for a while. That's when I know that I'm ready to start writing. It's a little bit weird and not at all as magical as it might sound — it's mostly me walking around muttering to myself, waiting for the image to show up so I can get to work.

DATES TO REMEMBER & OTHER STUFF

Ask Grey’s Anatomy 100th Episode Special - Part 1

Striving to be that woman- Chandra Wilson answers questions sent in by Grey’s Anatomy fans.
Question: What’s your favorite episode out of the 100 that have been filmed? - Stephanie Freemansburg, Pennsylvania
CW: Hey Stephanie, my favorite of course is always the pilot. That’s the episode that established who all these characters were, that who established who Dr. Bailey was gonna be and how people were going to treat her and anytime I get confused about how “What would Dr. Bailey do in this moment” or something like that, I always think back to the pilot. And I think back to that woman and that always who she’s striving to be, now she doesn’t make it all the time you know, she’s not always being successful at being that woman, but that’s her goal.... to be that person with that kind of power and that determined. I enjoy playing her a lot.

Question: Do you think the Chief has been too hard on you since you decided to go into PEDS? - Veronica, Arkansas
CW: The Chief Veronica has been incredibly unfair and hard and childish with Dr. Bailey ever since she talked about going into Pediatric surgery. As she said, that was his plan about her striving to be chief in General surgery and everything. But when you get bored you get bored and you need a challenge and I know you can understand that, so they’re both acting like children on the playground right now, which is a lot of fun but eventually he’ll get over it. I’ll just call his wife on him again if he keeps messing with me.

Question: Is Bailey’s job any easier that the original five interns are now residents? - Erica, Louisiana
CW: Erica I don’t think so because it’s once ‘your interns’ always your interns so you’re still teaching. I know she’s still teaching a lot as a matter of fact now that she’s chief resident she’s got 20 times more paperwork than she had before, 20 times more responsibility than she had before and then she’s also trying to be the best surgeon she can be, so she’s just got to up her game because she upped her responsibility. So you find out that just having interns that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Question: If Miranda weren’t a surgeon, she would be a ... - Ashley, Texas
CW: Ashley, you stumped me with your question. You said if Miranda were not a surgeon she would be a .....or an. Well, she certainly likes a position of authority and certainly likes to cut, maybe she’d be a head chef or something like that. She probably doesn’t cook that much but a least she’d get to cut and she’d be in charge of something so maybe she’d go there.

Question: Where has Bailey’s husband Tuck and their baby been lately. - Annabelle, Vermont
CW: Annabelle, baby Tuck and her husband Tucker have been in Shondaland, that’s where they are! They’re in the land of mystery and every now and then we talk about them coming back and then I don’t know, they mysteriously go away! He was in the nursery, that’s the last time we saw him so we know he in some kinda care in the hospital. Maybe they needed therapy, maybe they needed ‘time out’. The husband and the child are in ‘time out’ somewhere in Shondaland. To be continued...

Question: If you were sick, which Seattle Grace doctor would you trust with you life? - Lindsey, Florida
CW: Lindsey, if I were sick I would imagine I would have to trust myself to Cristina Yang ‘cause you know at least she’d kinda do the homework and she’d want to be good and all that kind of stuff you know. I don’t need the feelings and all of that, just come in and do the medicine. I think that she would be the one.

Question: What do you like most about your character? - Jenny, California
CW: Jenny, what I like most about Dr. Bailey is that she tries everyday. Maybe she’s not great everyday, or maybe she is great everyday, but the point is she gets up everyday and tries and even the days where she fails she may take a little time off for a second but then she comes back and gets back on her horse and tries some more.
