Alex: [voice over] Surgeons are all messed up, we’re butchers. Messed up, knife happy butchers. We cut people up, we move on. Patients die on our watch, we move on. We cause trauma, we suffer trauma. We don’t have time to worry about all the blood and death and crap really makes us feel.

Alex: [voice over] It doesn’t matter how tough we are, trauma always leave a scar. It follows us home, it changes our lives. Trauma messes everybody up but maybe that’s the point. All the pain and the fear and the crap, maybe going through all that is what keeps us moving forward. It’s what pushes us. Maybe we have to get a little messed up before we can step up.

Luke: Caucasian, 50s, professional, family member of a patient in the hospital. Jean: Caucasian, late 80s to early 90s, patient at the hospital. Source: SpoilerTV

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

General Spoilers:

new 02/12 - According to inside sources who work on Grey's, it is likely that Heigl and Knight will make an exit at the end of the current season. Both have asked to leave the show. However, ABC
needs to sign off on letting them out of their contracts, which has not been done. Source: Kristin on E!Online

* new 02/02 - [Bailey] receives some potentially career-altering news. [...] Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse [between Cristina and Owen] that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 01/25 - [Denny]'ll be around at least through March, since that's when Izzie's aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed. [...] Sources confirm [that Faye Dunaway] has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/12/2008 - New details are emerging about Jennifer Westfeldt's forthcoming arc as a patient on Grey's Anatomy. Or, I should say, new detail : She's married to Angels in America's Ben Shenkman. [...] He's not dropping by Seattle Grace to keep vigil at his ailing wife's bedside. According to a Grey's insider, he's a patient, too -- and a critical one at that. Like Westfeldt, Shenkman is signed on for multiple episodes. [...] [Eric Stoltz's serial killer character] is there to receive medical attention after he suffers a major beat down in prison. [T.R. Knight, who plays George, is in talks to be released from the show.] Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - Izzie's hallucinations are health-related -- and brain-related. And although the specific name of the ailment is being kept in the safe underneath Rhimes' desk, I'm told it's similar to an aneurysm. And every time it flares up, she sees Denny. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - A source close to the show tells me, "The reason [the actor] has not been on is because [he or she] has been a pain in the ass lately, trying to change scenes and dialogue, being hard to work with and putting up an attitude. The higher-ups were getting tired of it, so they tweaked [him or her] out of some episodes. That's why you haven't really seen [him or her] lately." A second source seconds that emotion: "[He or she] is not really getting along too well with producers right now." Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/26/2008 - Jennifer Westfeldt is joining Grey's Anatomy for a multi-episode arc. [... She] is coming on as a patient. [... The crossover will] take place over the course of three episodes (Feb. 5, 12, and 19) and the only confirmed participant as of now is Kate Walsh. [...] Denny will be haunting Izzie at least through February. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/20/2008 - "I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie, and Alex is among the most interesting we've ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can't wait for our viewers to see where we're taking it. But what it won't involve is Izzie having a brain tumor," [Shonda Rhimes revealed... Denny will] be in at least five episodes. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/08/2008 - Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps. Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut). Source: TV Guide Online
* 11/06/2008 - A female patient named Natalie wants to leave the hospital because she'll get fired from her job at a bar if she misses any more shifts. As the doctor taking care of her fixes a bandage before she goes, he notices that Natalie has many scars. Natalie also tells the male doctor that she's been flirting with him all day and that he should have reciprocated. Source: SpoilerFix.com [Note: This was set to occur around episode 9. It's unknown if it's been pushed to another episode or dropped.]
* 11/04 /2008- [The show] is now casting "star names only" for a "former military nurse who is maternal." Cristina most definitely has a "Major" romance coming on! Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/02/2008 - Jessica Capshaw (The L Word, The Practice) will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who's called in to consult on a case and winds up butting heads with Bailey. I hear that Capshaw has signed on for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more, and that she will make her first appearance midway through the season. Source: LA Times
* 08/28/2008 - [Dr. Addison Montgomery] may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. "I don't know if it's going to work with the story, and we don't want her to come back for a visit if it doesn't feel important, something only Addison can do," says Rhimes. "But the idea is on the table." Source: Entertainment Weekly

SCOOP-AGE & OTHER TRICKSTERS

The Ausiello Files

---------------------------

---------------------------

Question: Do you have any awesome scoop on what's ahead on Grey's Anatomy? --Jim
Ausiello: The wedding taking place in the 100th episode on May 7? It's not Mer-Der after all! The plot thickens!

Question: Any news on whether T.R. Knight will get a story this season on Grey's Anatomy? --Craig
Ausiello: Remember me telling you last month about a proposed storyline that would find George developing an interest in Owen's specialty as a military/trauma doc? You know, the one ABC insisted had been scrapped and replaced with something even better? Well, my colleague, Jennifer Armstrong, just spoke to Kevin McKidd, and the new story sounds a lot like the old one. "Hunt [will start to] see something in George that no one else has," McKidd revealed. "There's an event that happens and [Hunt] realizes there's a lot more to him... that he has a set of skills that maybe he isn't even aware of. And Hunt starts to mentor him in a way that gets really interesting." Translation: My initial theory about Shonda Rhimes having George join the military and go off to Iraq as a way of accommodating Knight's departure is so happening. Right?

Question: Will Cristina and Owen hit the sheets anytime soon on Grey's Anatomy? --Erin
Ausiello: Let's ask Kevin McKidd. "A lot happens this week," he said. "I think they’ve drawn that one out a lot, and I know people are getting frustrated. I think it’s good because they've really connected on a mental and emotional level. And now I think it's time they connect physically." (Oh, they're going to connect physically, alright.)

Ausiello Spoilers
Who's getting married on 'Grey's'? - March 23, 2009
f you've been bummed out by all my end-of-season death charts and suicide blind items, I've got just the pick-me-up for you: Lost and Grey's Anatomy are both heading for weddings!

An ABC insider confirms that Lost will begin filming a wedding ceremony later today that is slated to air during the show's two-hour finale on May 13. Who's getting hitched? Here are a pair of clues: Actors of Asian-American descent are being sought to play extras, and the wedding will take place on the mainland, not the island. That pretty much rules out Jack/Kate or Sawyer/Juliet. "One theory is that it's a flashback to Sun and Jin's wedding," whispers a Lost insider. "But the wild rumor is that Sun and Jin's daughter will marry Aaron in the future."

Over at Grey's, series creator Shonda Rhimes has already confirmed that one of the show's couples will tie the knot later this season, and there's increasingly loud buzz that the event will take place on May 7, during the show's landmark 100th episode, appropriately titled "Beautiful Day." Adding to the speculation: The episode will feature a minister.

The bigger question than when it will happen, of course, is who is walking down the aisle? One source close to Grey's says Derek and Meredith will finally take the plunge -- something a show spokesperson would neither confirm nor deny.

Keep in mind, Rhimes said viewers would be surprised by the wedding. What would be so surprising about a Mer-Der ceremony? Ironically, the speed with which it would have taken place. Sure, the star-crossed lovers have been dating for five years, but a May 7 wedding would make for a lightning-fast, seven-week engagement (that's assuming Mer accepts Der's elevator proposal this Thursday, and all indications are that she will).

"Shonda is probably counting on fans thinking a Der-Mer engagement would be just as drawn out as their courtship," speculates one Grey's insider. "So to marry them off seven weeks after getting engaged would certainly qualify as a surprise."

Do you agree? Would a Mer-Der wedding catch you off guard? Or do you think Rhimes is pulling a bait-and-switch and one of the show's other couples will exchange "I do's"?

Ausiello Spoilers

Question: What is up with this supposed marriage that will take place at the end of the season on Grey's Anatomy? I'm assuming that a Meredith and Derek wedding would be too rushed. --Dana
Version #1 Ausiello: You know what they say about people who assume: They make an a out of ss and ume. I hear Der-Mer will finally make it official in the March 26 episode titled "Elevator Love Letter" (gee, I wonder where he proposes?), so that gives the happy couple about seven weeks to pull something together. That's more than enough time, no?

Version #2 — Ausiello: You know what they say about people who assume: They make an a out of ss and ume. I hear Der will finally propose to Mer in the March 26 episode titled "Elevator Love Letter" (gee, I wonder where he pops the question?), so, assuming she accepts, that gives the happy couple about seven weeks to pull something together. That's more than enough time, no?

Question: This is my first time asking a question, so, for the sake of a newbie's sanity, could you please give a good Grey's Anatomy spoiler on Cristina/Owen? --Sasha
Ausiello: Sorry, but the hazing section of the AA bylaws state that all virgin question-askers must be given an ugly, painful spoiler their first time out. With that in mind, remember me telling you that Owen's PTSD would cause him to physically harm Cristina? Well, that little scratch last week wasn't it. The violence I was referring to comes next week when Owen strangles the you-know-what out of her. Everyone join me in congratulating Sasha on getting her first AA question answered! You're now eligible to join the AA frequent question-asker club. Click here for details on how you can earn points towards free hotel stays, a Macy's shopping spree, complimentary upgrades on flights, and much, much more!

Question: How long will Izzie's condition remain a secret on Grey's Anatomy? --Tammy
Ausiello: Not long. Loose-lipped Cristina blabs all to Bailey and Alex right before she performs her first solo surgery. BTW, can anyone explain to me why on earth Izzie chose to confide in Cristina and not George? I mean, aside from the obvious: It would've required giving T.R. Knight something to do.

SPOILER: 'GREY'S' DOC HITS 'ROCK BOTTOM' - Mar 25, 2009
Spoiler alert!

It's a close call for someone on "Grey's Anatomy" Thursday night.

A lethal secret is revealed when the Dr. Owen Hunt tries to strangle his love interest, Cristina Yang, while they're both sleeping at the hospital. Other doctors intervene to save Yang, who's played by Sandra Oh.

Kevin McKidd, who portrays Hunt, said that while his character was in Iraq, his platoon of surgeons came under attack and "he's the only survivor."

There have been hints that Hunt suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But until Thursday's episode, he hasn't disclosed the wartime injury to people at the hospital and he had cut off ties with people he knew before.

"This is the catalyst," McKidd said, "that is going to push Owen to realize he's hit rock bottom" and needs professional help.

'Grey's Anatomy''s Cristina Gets Strangled! - Mar 25, 2009
Cristina (Sandra Oh) is almost strangled to death, and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) begins the battle for her life when Derek (Patrick Dempsey) is scheduled to perform delicate brain surgery! ET has your sneak peek.

Owen Hunt's (Kevin McKidd) PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) almost causes him to kill Cristina when the two docs are sleeping and for no determined reason he begins to strangle her. Callie (Sara Ramirez) intervenes, but will Cristina be able to forgive him this time? Or is their relationship doomed?

Then Izzie goes from surgeon to patient as she fights the cancer that has spread throughout her body. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) convinces Derek to return to work, because she feels he is the only one who can perform the delicate brain surgery that Izzie needs. After his drunken state the past few weeks, all eyes are on him as he resumes his surgical career.

And Derek proposes one more time, but Meredith isn't ready to commit, saying, "Izzie comes first."

LAPD: T.R. Knight Caused Hollywood Smashup - Mar. 24, 2009
Here's hoping T.R. Knight is in good hands with Allstate.

Los Angeles police have determined that the Grey's Anatomy star caused a three-vehicle accident March 19 in Hollywood that sent one woman to the hospital for minor injuries.

"He is at fault, but it was just a minor incident," LAPD spokesman Richard French tells E! News. "He was late getting through the intersection."

Because no LAPD officer witnessed the crash, Knight will most likely not be cited for the smashup, which is now a case for the parties' respective insurance companies.

A rep for Knight has declined to comment on the incident.

Authorities said last week that the actor was headed eastbound on Hollywood Boulevard and that the car he hit was going in the opposite direction.

Grey's' Gossip: One Wedding, No Funerals? - Mar 25, 2009
Kevin McKidd, aka Dr. Hunt, Dishes About Twists to Come on 'Grey's Anatomy'

After five seasons of breakups, makeups and one incredibly cheesy house made of candles, Derek Shepherd and Meredith Grey finally get engaged on Thursday's "Grey's Anatomy."

Photo Caption: Surprises await viewers of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" before the season ends.(shows Izzy, Owen, Meredith & Derek)

Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen Hunt on the ABC drama, confirms the perfectly coiffed "McDreamy" will break out his mother's engagement ring and present it to Meredith on this week's episode.

"Yes," McKidd told ABC News Radio, referring to the proposal. "The last time I looked, that is the case."

According to Web reports, Dr. Shepherd won't take a knee at his woodsy trailer or at Joe's Bar, but in an elevator at Seattle Grace Hospital. The episode title, "Elevator Love Letter," does little to convince fans otherwise.

Given their rocky past, it's unclear whether the "Grey's" golden couple will actually make it down the aisle. Series creator Shonda Rimes has announced a "surprise" wedding will take place this season but considering the other hot doctor pairs in the cast -- see: Izzy and Alex, Mark and Lexie -- it may not be Meredith and Derek.
"We don't know that yet," McKidd said. "Even I don't know that yet."

Chances are it won't be McKidd's character, Owen, and Christina Yang (Sandra Oh.) Their budding romance turns rocky Thursday when Owen, an Iraq War veteran, suffers a major post traumatic stress disorder episode.

"He basically has a terrible nightmare," McKidd said. "While he's actually still asleep, he injures Christina."

McKidd calls it a "rock bottom moment" for Owen, one that prompts him to seek professional help from Derek, who obliges even as he treats Izzy Stevens (Katherine Heigl,) who is battling stage 4 melanoma that has spread to her brain and liver.

"It's a very emotional episode," McKidd said. "It's really the first act to what will happen in the rest of the season."

Among the burning questions from fans: Will Izzy die? And will Heigl and co-star T.R. Knight leave "Grey's Anatomy" for good?

McKidd shoots down the rumored departures, saying, "Everybody's still there. Everybody's got their contracts. Everybody's working and everybody's in every episode that I've read so far."

Mega Buzz on Grey's

* Mar 24, 2009 10:01 PM ET

Any dish on Grey's Anatomy's most interesting couple, Cristina and Owen? Any chance of them hitting the sheets soon? — Erin
MATT: "Interesting" is pretty much how Kevin McKidd summed up his Grey's romance when he dropped by on Tuesday for a video Q&A. Calling the docs' courtship "kind of cool," the Scotsman said, "They're probably more in love than a lot of people on the show, and yet they haven't actually consummated their relationship." Why are they waiting to do the deed, violent PTSD outbursts aside? Says McKidd, "They both know deep down that this isn't just [about] a quickie in the on-call room ... so they're holding out for the correct set of circumstances." As for when said moment might arrive, I will say this: sooner than you think.

Sides summary for episode 5.19 "Elevator Love Letter"

Jean – 93 year old woman lying in bed, opens her eyes. Dr. Smith smiles, tells Jean she’s a fighter and that her family was asked to stay out of her room so as to give her some time to rest. Jean doesn’t want that and explains that her family is impatient. It’s been a long time but they always come. They are her people and people keep you going. People are better than no people. Jean closes her eyes taking in big breaths.

Jean’s family: niece Jackie (40’s), nephews Tobin and Luke (both in their 50’s). They are all siblings.

Jackie - Jean is unconscious, surrounded by her family as Dr. Smith enters and informs them that their aunt hasn’t made a strong recovery. Jackie asks about a new heart medicine saying that the last time Jean was in the hospital the doctor gave her that and she stabilized. Dr. Smith says they tried that last night but it didn’t do much and that it’s probably time to say good-bye. Tobin asks if it’s time to say good-bye now or some time in the next 24 hours because he has a flight out in the morning and if he waits too long he can’t change it. Jackie says she knows they must seem like vultures but they’re not. Tobin says that Aunt Jean was given a month to live 3 years ago and they were crushed. Jackie explains that Jean is in and out of the hospital once a month and everytime they jump on a plane, sit by the bed, say their good-byes but each time she gets better. Tobin says they really do want to be there when she dies and Jackie says Jean’s ready, they’re all ready and that it is time. The doctors are still a little horrified.

Tobin - Jean is unconscious, surrounded by her family as Dr. Smith enters, informs them that there’s nothing more that can be done for Jean and that it’s probably time for them to say their good-byes. Tobin asks if Dr. Smith means now or some time in the next 24 hours. Dr. Smith says it’s hard to predict but 24 hours is unlikely. Tobin asks if Dr. Smith is sure because he has a flight in the morning and if he waits past noon, he can’t change it. Doctors have surprised looks. Jackie says that they’re not evil people waiting for her to die. Tobin says that Jean was given a month to live 3 years ago and they were crushed because Jean loved them more than their own mother. They held her hand at bedside for weeks, said their good-byes and then she stabilized. Jackie says Jean is in and out of the hospital once a month while Tobin says they want to be there when Jean goes but it’s a lot of flying around the country. Jackis says Jean’s ready, they’re ready, it’s time.

Luke – Same as the other sides. Dr. Smith says there’s nothing more the doctors can do and it’s time for the family to say good-bye to Jean. Tobin asks if they say good-bye now or some time today because he has a flight out tomorrow and if he waits past noon he can’t change it. Luke says he actually has to be on a plane tonight because he has a board meeting tomorrow. He asks (in a hopeful way) if Dr. Smith thinks she’ll die before tomorrow. Doctors looked surprised. Tobin explains that they've been through this for the past 3 years, Luke says they really want to be there, Tobin says everyone is ready and it’s time and Luke adds that he has a big board meeting tomorrow. The doctors try to understand but are a little horrified.

Transcription of sneak incase some cannot view the video:

Bailey is outside Izzie's room, talking to Alex, Mer and Cristina.

Bailey: You three. Okay, I understand why you're here, I know you want to help, but I will be the resident on her case today. I will be prepping her for surgery and if you are going into that hospital room today you will do so as her friends. Izzie needs her people around her, she needs you to tell her that everything will be fine, she needs you to hold her hand, she needs you. Not more doctors, understood?

Bailey and the three residents walk into Izzie's room. Izzie is in bed knitting a green sweater. Derek, Chief and some other doctors we don't know are in the room also.

Izzie: Great, let's get started.

Bailey: Okay, as you know, you have stage four metastatic melanoma. We have a lot of surgeries and a lot of procedures lined up for you over the next few weeks.

Chief: We've seen evidence of mets on your liver, so one of those surgeries Doctor Bailey and I will resect them. We also lined up Dr Parker (I think he says) from OB to harvest as many healthy eggs as she can before you undergo any radiation.

Izzie: Right, babies.

Izzie glances at Alex, who appears to be staring at the floor.

Bailey: We're just leaving the option open for you if you want it.

Izzie smiles and nods.

Derek: But our priority today is to address the temporal lobe mets in your brain. I'm surprised we didn't catch it sooner, this kind of thing can cause headaches and seizures and intense hallucinations. But hopefully the lesion has clear margins and I can remove it all.

Oncologist: Are you people done? Over the next four weeks you are slated for 3 major surgeries, 7 out-patient procedures, and that's just for the mets we've already found. In all likelihood we will find more which means we will have to cut into you more, so you may as well get used to the idea now. I'll be administering your radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The treatment will be aggressive, it will be harsh, you should prepare yourself. I'll be overseeing all your procedures including today's with Dr Shepherd, which means every surgeon in this room now answers to me. Welcome to the cancer wing, folks.

Oncologist walks out of the room. Derek smiles at Izzie.

Derek: See you in the OR.

Derek, Bailey and the Chief prepare to leave, but it looks like her friends may be staying.

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS ~ EPISODE PLAY LIST

Song Title

5.19 Elevator Love Letter
Stars - "Elevator Love Letter"

I'm so hard for a rich girl
My heels are high, my eyes cast low
And I don't know how to love
I get so tired after midday, lately
I take it out on my good friends
But the worst stays in, or where would I begin?

My office glows all night long
Its a nuclear show, and the stars are gone
Elevator, Elevator, take me home

I'm so hot for the rich girl
Her heels so high, and my hopes so low
'Cause I don't know how to love
I'll take her home after midnight
And if she likes, I'll tell her lies
How we'll be in love by the morning
I don't think she knows
That I'm saying good bye

My office glows all night long
Its a nuclear show, and the stars are gone
Elevator, Elevator, take me home

My office glows all night long
Its a nuclear show, and the stars are gone
Elevator, Elevator, take me home

Don't go, say you'll stay
Spend a lazy Sunday
In my arms, I won't take
Anything away

Don't go, say you'll stay
Spend a lazy Sunday
In my arms, don't take
Anything away

PODCAST

PODCAST synopsis thanks to BNSCRUBS at TWOP:
I don't know why I'm doing this. Oh the things that Cristina and Owen have done to me. I haven't listened to a fraudcast since season 3....

So we're going to find out about how to propose to Shonda in this fraudcast. And we're also going to learn a SURPRISING amount of detail about the next episode. Woo.

Why, oh why am I doing this?

They say hi, do their lame introduction. They're talking about how they're keeping to their schedule and that they've done three in a row. Wow. Impressive. Stupid girl rambling. Blah blah blah.

They said that we should agree that this was an episode not to miss. It was 5 years and 97 episodes in the making. They said right off the top of it that Meredith and Derek proposed. The loved the elevator proposal. They talked about the elevator proposal. Shonda hates ooey gooey proposals. Don't use flowers and get down on one knee. She wants to be clear when she says she doesn't want that kind of thing, but the other writers feel the other way. Some of them like that stuff. They start talking about proposing with food, choking on rings, the jumbotron.

Shonda says that she felt like it was a big part of the MerDer relationship. What he's telling is the map of their relationship is the medicine, says that you can map each case back through the series. They're all patients from previous episodes. They wanted something that would reach Meredith. Shonda says they ARE engaged. She's not changing her mind. They're engaged.

No games are being pulled, apparently.

They're still talking about the elevator. Woo. They said we're happy that the storyline is moving forward.

They talk about the happy on that side, but they can't have all happy. They start talking about Cristina and Owen. Cristina feels for Owen, they feel for Owen. They've really talked about it. They've been talking about the PTSD story, how he has a wound that you can't see. They said it was very hard because they've all fallen in love with him. They wanted to be able to do it really. They talk about his sightless eyes because he doesn't know what's happening, and it's heartbreaking. And it's Cristina who has been taking these little babysteps towards these things and how Meredith gets these things delivered to these. Cristina is beginning to take a risk, and realize that once again she's with somebody who's a little damaged is hugely upsetting and moving in comparison in what's going on in Meredith's life. To them it was really interesting. They said their favorite scenes is Cristina saying that he's got war wounds. She wouldn't walk away just because his mind has been shattered. They talk about the beautiful love scene they had. The editor is the same one who killed Denny and the dog. When the whole thing is over, the lovemaking - and it was love making- and you feel like he's asking for her forgivness and she's forgiving him. When she's laying with him and she realizes that she's lying in his arms and she can't sleep that they're hopeless. They want them to be together, they're hopeful for them. They want Cristina to have an incredible victory. She's had a bad year. Through Hahn and Dixon and Meredith fighting, she's had a bad year and they want her to have more.

They start talking about Izzie. She says they're all wearing sunscreen, tells everyone to wear sunscreen. Survival rate for melanoma is incredibly low. Get your moles checked. The thing about the Izzie story is how her friends deal with her sickness. They wanted to tell the story from Alex's perspective. The story is really told from outside Izzie's room, looking in. You see Izzie in the background in her scenes. They're afraid to go in her room. By the time somebody goes in the room, she's in surgery. Nobody goes to see her. Their favorite moment is in the lunchroom. It's a transitional episode. They're heading somewhere.

What you realize from the episode is that you realize how much Alex loves Izzie. He snoojes into the cup. They said they can't use the word sp**ge on national television, so they made up their word. Slooting, jelly patch. They had a few words. Like va-jay-jay.

They love the entire thing of Karev feeling like this isn't the way it's supposed to be. It wasn't the way he imagined it. It's really sweet because he has a little boy quality in that moment. It's horrifying. His girlfriend is going to undergo radical chemotherapy, so he is being asked to j...rk off into a cup for her in case she doesn't die. It's pretty horrific. It's funny, but it's one of the worst things somebody can ask you to do. It's just bad. And the fact that he is like, 'give me the cup' and does it- it's just great. They like when he puts it in front of the Chief. They like when he shows up for Izzie at the end.

They go back to the proposal. They talk about the initial morning proposal, so he put down the ring as he was asking the question and the ring means no. He comes out desperate and it's nice to hear her be the strong one before the surgery. How she tells him it's not okay. When he asks the third time, it's the right way. The beard meant his dark time and he was out of the dark. They like the beard. They thought it was hot. They like clean shaven too. Shonda gets to choose those things. He does participate with her, but it's Shonda's fantasy world.

There's a moment in the episode where Callie admits to Arizona where she admits wishing Izzie would die. You forget the history. She spent all that time wishing that and then she brings George in. They like Callie and Arizona together. They have a good energy. Callie is another girl who needs a break. She's had a rough go of it too. They're rooting for Callie and Arizona.

They're taking a break, there's a lot to chew on. You have to think. You're going to be worried about the proposal. They're going to take some time. We're going to come back on April 23rd with Sweet Surrender. Directed by Tony Phelan. Callie's dad comes to the hospital. We're going to see wedding dresses. Shonda loves the wedding dresses. She's excited about the wedding dresses. There's more than one wedding dress. There's a little something for everybody. There's some surprises. They're going to deal with Derek and Mark not speaking. The next step for Owen. And some other stuff, but you're not going to want to watch it. You'll know it. They don't like spoilers. They're the anti-spoiler. They're the anticipator.

They're signing off.

Oh thank God.

EP RECAP

Official Company/GA Approved Recap
03/26/2009 - "Elevator Love Letter"
Season 5, Episode 519

Owen has a nightmare, triggered by the helicopter-like blades of Cristina's ceiling fan. She wakes to find Owen choking her. He only stops when Callie hears a commotion and comes in to check on her. Callie immediately calls Meredith, even though it's 3 a.m. Cristina insists she's fine, even though her neck is severely bruised. Owen can only sob, "I am so sorry. I don't know what happened." Cristina hugs him and tells him it's okay.

Derek shows up at Meredith's the next morning and wordlessly presents her with the ring. "No, not like this," Meredith says, closing the box. "Today's about Izzie," she tells him. "You have a gift and you can do this."

At the hospital, Meredith comments on the fact that Cristina is wearing a turtleneck and tells her, "You're not okay and your boyfriend's not okay."

To their surprise, Alex comes up and asks, "Is your boyfriend okay?" but he's talking about Derek, not Owen. "I was there for his carnage in the OR, remember? This isn't just any patient we're talking about today. This is Izzie."

George is so hurt that he was the last to hear about Izzie's illness that he asks Callie to assign him plenty of work that doesn't involve Izzie.

Miranda tells Meredith, Cristina and Alex that they need to be there as Izzie's friends, not as doctors, but when Izzie shoos them all away, none of them go back to visit her all day, even though they can think of nothing else. Bailey presents Izzie's case: They've lined up several treatments and surgeries for her over the next few weeks. Dr. Swender, who'll be administering her chemotherapy, tells Izzie, "The treatment will be aggressive and harsh. You should prepare yourself."

Richard suggests that Izzie might think about saving some eggs in case she wants to have babies later on. Richard informs Alex that frozen eggs have a better survival rate if they're fertilized. Alex quickly agrees, but he's too guilt-ridden about not having recognized Izzie's symptoms. "This isn't how Izzie and I were supposed to make a baby," he tells Meredith, but eventually he's able to present Richard with his "contribution."

Owen awaits the arrival of a patient trauma case by helicopter, and the helicopter blades, like the ceiling fan, clearly trigger an unpleasant memory, but he runs off before anything happens. Derek witnesses Owen's rooftop meltdown and advises him to get treatment for his post-traumatic stress disorder, but Owen refuses. Owen tells Cristina they have to stop seeing each other. "I know my limits. Let me decide what I can handle," she says. Meredith presses Cristina to leave Owen and Cristina insists that Owen's condition is no different than if he'd lost a leg.

Miranda quizzes Izzie on a medical procedure, saying she'll need to know it in the future. "You really think I'll be here a year from now?" Izzie asks and Miranda answers, "Yes, I do."

Arizona finds Callie in the chapel, wracked with guilt because she literally "wished Izzie Stevens dead for a year. What kind of person wishes someone would die?" Arizona asks if she's praying right now for Izzie to die and Callie says, "No, I'm praying for her to live." Callie finds George, who's furious that Izzie told him nothing was wrong every time he asked. "We are going to go pray for her," Callie insists. "One time you loved her enough to ruin our marriage. I know that you care if she lives or dies."

Derek preps for surgery, but he tells Meredith, "I'm not ready." He tells her he needs her to say yes, but she says she's not going anywhere.

Alex goes to talk to Izzie before her surgery, but he's too late. "It's a beautiful day to save lives," Derek says as he puts Izzie under. Izzie makes it through the first surgery just fine, but Miranda chews out her friends for not going to visit her. "Tomorrow, do better," she tells them.

When Richard wants to know why Derek and Meredith aren't out celebrating the success of the surgery, Derek tells Richard that she has turned him down twice. "Meredith believes in you," Richard replies.

Richard makes Meredith wait for the elevator and when the doors open, she sees why: A clean-shaven Derek is inside and the elevator is decorated with scans of all the surgeries they did together. He recounts the stages of their relationships as they played out during each case. Lastly, he shows her the post-op scan of Izzie's brain. "You got me into the OR," he tells her. "You put the rest of us to work because you've seen worse. You know we'll survive. You say you're dark and twisty, but that's not a weakness, it's a strength. It makes you who you are. I love you Meredith Grey, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you."

"And I want to spend the rest of my life with you," she says, and they kiss.

Owen and Cristina make love for the first time. Afterwards, she confesses, "I don't think I can handle this after all," she says. "I'm so, so sorry, but I'm lying here and I'm afraid to fall asleep." Owen turns to Derek for the help he offered earlier, and Derek starts with an MRI scan.

Meredith goes to Cristina's apartment to tell her, "I'm engaged."

"I broke up with Owen," Cristina says. Meredith crawls into bed beside her, just as Alex does with a groggy Izzie.

Grey Matter

Stacy McKee on "Elevator Love Letter"...

Just so you know, I am a sap when it comes to marriage proposal stories. I love them. I love hearing them, I love telling them… I fully enjoy all the cheesy romantic oooey gooey-ness. I LOVE that Derek proposed! I LOVE that Meredith said yes! I can’t help it. I’m just cheesy that way.

But first things first. Entirely too much happened in this episode. TOO MUCH. Owen went all PTSD and choked Cristina in his sleep then she forgave him and they had ridiculously beautiful sex until she realized she had to dump him after all. Alex snooched (yes, you heard me right. Snooched.) into a cup for Izzie so her eggs could be extracted, fertilized, and frozen before her body gets all sick with radiation and chemo. Derek finally came back from the woods looking all Grisly Adams-ish to operate on Izzie’s brain and – and then… there’s that elevator. Where Derek proposed to Meredith, and she said YES.

Yup. Too much happened in this episode. I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know what to talk about first.

Let’s start with the unpleasant part. Owen. And the choking. This was a tricky one. Let’s be clear. This is not a guy attacking a woman because he’s a guy who attacks women. We did not set out to tell a story about domestic abuse. This is a story about PTSD.

Owen is completely asleep when he attacks Cristina. Asleep, having a nightmare. Remember the story we did earlier this season about the guy with night terrors? Same thing. Did you see how dead Owen’s eyes look? He has no awareness of what’s happening. And the moment he wakes up, when Callie calls his name and he snaps out of the nightmare – Owen is more discombobulated and confused than anyone else. That’s why Cristina’s line is so important, when she asks Meredith if it would be any more appropriate to abandon Owen right now than it would be to abandon someone who had suffered a stroke or a heart attack. Owen is wounded. He does have war wounds. Which, as a doctor, Cristina recognizes. And she’s not going to let that intimidate her. She knows wounds can be healed.

The point isn’t the choking, it’s where Owen goes from here... The story we’ve always wanted to tell is one of healing and awareness and treatment for PTSD. That’s part of what you’ll see Owen struggling with in episodes to come. But before we can get there, before Owen can be truly willing to seek out help – we needed to see him hit rock bottom. We needed him to realize that his symptoms aren’t necessarily within his own control. We needed him to choke Cristina.

And if you felt a little worried when Cristina and Owen started to kiss, if you felt a little twinge of heartbreak for the two of them as they finally, beautifully consummated their relationship… that’s what you were supposed to feel. It’s exactly what we see creeping into Cristina’s face, after the sex, when she can’t fall asleep. She’s having a very quiet, but very real panic attack right there in Owen’s arms. I feel like there’s a part of Owen and Cristina that knew – even as they were finally having sex after all this time – that this was actually a goodbye.

NOW – Alex Karev. Can I just say – the minute I saw the first cut of this episode, I ran into Shonda’s office and declared that Alex should ALWAYS do the voice over because it is just so fantastic! Right from the start, the second you hear Alex’s voice and see him pacing outside of Izzie’s room… you know this episode is a little bit different. It has a different energy, a different pace. Did you notice all the quiet, haunting moments? Did you notice there wasn’t a single big, scary medical Act Out? This episode is quiet. It’s still. It needs to sit in its quiet moments, not breeze past them.

I adore Alex, always have. And this was the perfect time to have him narrate the show, since he’s just learned that Izzie is dying. When Alex is venting to Meredith in the on-call room-- Oh man. (I’ll just preface this with the fact that – as I mentioned before, I am a bit of a sap and, yes, sometimes I cry easily) but I’m telling you – we ALL teared up on set when we were shooting Justin in that scene. He’s just tremendous. We don’t get to see Alex Karev be vulnerable very often, so when we finally do… It is so worth it. Especially when he says that this wasn’t how he wanted to make a baby with Izzie... Love him. Couldn’t love him more in that moment.

And I’ve saved the best, of course, for last. The Elevator Proposal.

First of all, you should know that there’s a long standing debate in our writers’ room about what does or does not make for a good marriage proposal. Some of us prefer what Shonda calls the Oooey Gooey Disgusting stuff – the more traditional proposals, usually involving grand gestures and flowers and rings and romance. But Shonda’s taste is exactly the opposite of any of that. The minute one of us launches into a romantic recounting of one of our own marriage proposals… Shonda basically covers her ears as though they might bleed. To her, those oooey gooey romance filled proposals are pretty much akin to… well… Hell. Which is why she’s Shonda. She’s a little dark and twisty - in all the best ways. It’s also what makes her a little like Meredith Grey.

So you can imagine just how hard it was to come up with what the perfect marriage proposal might be for Meredith Grey. It couldn’t be oooey and gooey. Couldn’t be a traditional, down on one knee proposal. But it’s also a piece of Grey’s Anatomy history, five seasons in the making. It needed to be true to who Meredith and Derek are together – what their history is, why they love each other, how they understand each other…

And it did have to be romantic. But not predictably romantic. It had to feel magical and fresh and totally, completely perfect for Meredith and Derek.

So what better place than their elevator? And what better way than by revisiting their lives together as doctors? It would be wrong for Derek Shepherd to get down on one knee. Even worse for him to offer up the ring he hit into the woods. Derek needed to give Meredith HER perfect proposal. Which, as it turns out, involved an elevator, light boxes and a lot of brain scans.

I love that Meredith only says yes when the proposal is right. She stays true to herself; she won’t say yes out of pity or because Derek needs an ego boost. She will only – can only – say yes once Izzie is fine. Once Derek is fine. Once the proposal is finally, totally right. And what I love is that what makes the proposal right is that Derek finally gets it. He finally understands and accepts completely who Meredith really is. Sure – she’s got a dark side. She’s seen more trauma in her life than most people. And, amazingly, she’s just about the only person this entire episode NOT suffering from PTSD. As Derek says, she’s seen worse, she’s survived worse, and she knows the people around her will survive it too.

What I love is that Derek finally puts into words the one thing she really needs to hear from him. That Meredith’s dark side is not a flaw, it’s her strength. It’s what makes her who she is. And that’s why he loves her.

See? Not too cheesy. Not too sappy. Magical proposals CAN be achieved, even without rose petals and rings in champagne glasses! Although, it does help when Grisly Adams finally shaves off his beard!

When I was pitching my episode down to Shonda, back when it was just an idea and nothing more, Shonda stopped me mid-pitch to say this: “Stacy. Just so you’re clear, if you pitch me that the last scene of your entire episode is the proposal, I will vomit.”

Which, given the fact that proposals basically make Shonda break out in hives, I should have been prepared for… And though it is entirely possible I maybe might have once upon a time planned on ending the episode with the Elevator Proposal, that is NOT how I pitched it. And that is NOT how I wrote it. Because that would have just been too Oooey and gooey. Too romantic. Too cheesy. Too me. And not enough Meredith Grey.

Plus, I really really hate vomit.

RECAPS & REVIEWS & RATINGS

BUDDYTV

'Grey's Anatomy' Aftergasm: Conservation of Happiness at Seattle Grace - March 27, 2009
Look, people, I like to think that I am immune to grand romantic gestures. I was recently made to watch Twilight in its entirety while live blogging it with my coworkers, and the so-called romance between Bella and Edward went right over my head. (I was more interested in the mundane details of the Cullens' lives, like whether they move every four years so that the kid vampires can go to a new high school, or why Carlisle and Esme don't home-school the kids, or why Carlisle is a doctor, even. Do you need a profession if you are undead?)

But back to my original point. I tend to roll my eyes at things like proposals and romance and love, but Derek's proposal on last night's Grey's Anatomy was absolutely perfect! How glad am I that Derek (Patrick Dempsey) didn't go through with his original, hackneyed proposal idea of lighting candles and scattering a bunch of rose petals on the bed! Instead, he decorated the elevator, where so many consequential moments have occurred throughout the series, with brain scans chronicling the medical journey he has taken with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). It was beautifully done, and so perfectly them. I was seriously swooning when he did it, and I usually hate him!....... leap

Grey's Anatomy: Could It Be - Gasp - George? - Thursday, March 26, 2009
After trying to figure out which of the Grey's Anatomy couples are headed for the altar, there's another piece of juicy blind item that, if it were indeed about Grey's Anatomy, can send the world of Seattle Grace in shambles.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello says, as a matter of fact, that a “major character” on a show we are “obsessed with” will commit suicide before the season is over.

Going back to Grey's, from the looks of things, the final stretch of the ABC medical dramedy's current season is going to be charged. We are four short episodes away from the two-hour finale that will change the face of Seattle Grace as we know it. If the rumors are true, on- and off-screen best friends Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight are on their last season on Grey's Anatomy.

If you failed to watch the last episode, everyone finally, finally found out that Izzie is terminally ill. For the first time, the then-interns-now-residents stood up and paid attention, and perhaps realized that they'd been neglecting each other, or at least not paying enough attention. Izzie told the robot – Cristina (Sandra Oh) – first, who told everyone just before making the first cut on her first solo surgery. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) was sulking in his trailer, until Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) told him to straighten up because Izzie needs him.

Back to the real world. While Heigl's character Izzie has a pretty thorough exit strategy (namely, cancer), At this point, George O'Malley's storyline does not exactly lend well to a departure, which leads me to my next point.

Could it be – gasp – George who commits suicide? Of course, the clues that Ausiello gives are so vague that he doesn't even specify which show will have the suicide. He could be refering to practically anyone on Lost or Gossip Girl or even House, and even if it is indeed Grey's Anatomy that is the show in question, Knight isn't the only one who is rumored to be leaving the show, so it could be anyone.

While terribly out of character, it will be quite easy to understand if George does indeed kill himself in the event of Izzie's death. After all, the two are best friends, and his concern for Izzie is unmatched, even by Alex (Justin Chambers). George was among the first to notice what would turn out to be symptoms of Izzie's disease, so it's possible that he may start blaming himself for not acting on his concerns sooner and more definitively. On second thought, if guilt were the issue, no one should be more guilt-stricken than Alex, and his eyes showed every bit of that emotion after hearing the news from Cristina.

I hope it's not George. POLL

CINEMA BLEND

TV Recap:- Elevator Love Letter - 2009-03-27
What an incredibly emotionally heavy episode! Nobody seems to be taking the possibility of Izzie dying very well, especially Alex. Meredith has lured Derek back to surgery, but he's not sure he's ready. Derek asks Meredith to marry him, but she's not sure that he's ready. McBadass's Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder hits a crisis point and he'll have to face up to it. This really could have been a season finale, it was so packed with emotion, conflict, and resolution.

The big surgery that all of the drama revolves around this week is, of course, Derek's surgery to remove Izzie's brain tumor. Through Izzie's Oncologist - a very cold, abrasive woman, think Yang and Bailey mixed together and dialed to 11 - we learn that this is just one of many surgeries and procedures that Izzie will have to go through to get all of the tumors in her body.

Before heading to Seattle Grace, Derek comes by Meredith's house (he has a bag, so he could be moving back in, too) and puts the ring that he had previously knocked into the woods in front of Meredith. Not much of a proposal, and Meredith is worried that he's asking for the wrong reasons, so tells him not yet. Derek looks disappointed, but just goes to take a shower. And that, other than Alex telling him not to screw this surgery up like he did the last one, a conversation with McBadass that we'll talk about later, and minor conversations with other characters, is the last we really see of Derek until the surgery.

The rest of the core group are having alot of trouble dealing with Izzie's illness and avoid her room all day, claiming to be busy, though none of them really do anything. Meredith and Yang bicker over McBadass's PTSD which we, again, will discuss shortly. George begs Torres for some cases to work on, but we only really see him smashing plaster casts to relieve anger.

Alex, Sloane, and Lexie all work on an elderly woman who is about to die. Her niece and nephews, who have all flown in to say goodbye, seem in a rush for it to be over so they can go on with their lives. When Alex finally snaps and goes off on them for being so callous (He's obviously a bit sensitive about death at the moment), they explain that they were told she had hours to live almost a year ago. At least once a month, she goes into the hospital, they're told she's about to go and fly out to say goodbye, and then she recovers. They just want it to be over with. He isn't very convinced and tells Lexie to keep them out after they bring the aunt back to life once again, but the patient tells him that she wants them there. They are her people, and people are better than no people, which seems to slap some sense into Alex and he runs to be with Izzie before her surgery, but she's already in the OR. ........leap

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Forward Motion - Mar 27, 2009
Cristina and Owen take it to the next level, in more ways than one, Izzie starts her treatment journey, and Derek gets back on the horse and steps up his game with Meredith

Hey, so this Grey's Anatomy episode was kind-of a big deal, huh?

For starters, I was heaving sobs in under three minutes, despite the fact that I was well-prepared for Owen's post-traumatic-stress-disorder-induced sleep-choking of Cristina. Callie heard the commotion and broke it up, otherwise things could've gone much worse. And that's just the point. At the risk of getting all public service announcement here, I truly believe this is a fantastic story line to tackle — the phenomenon of post-war night terrors that can endanger your bed partner is very, very real (my Vietnam-vet dad went through this for years, when I was too young to appreciate the strain on both him and my mom), and few people realize (or really want to think about) what soldiers go through once they get home. It helps, in this case, to have a pair of sublime actors handling this sensitive topic. As good as they've been at amping up the romance crackling between Owen and Cristina, Kevin McKidd and Sandra Oh brought the Emmy consideration tonight from scene 1.

Another sign that Grey's has returned to its second-season dramatic glory? A T.R. Knight sighting in under six minutes! (Theory: T.R. Knight sightings are directly proportional to the quality of an episode, whether or not he directly contributes to said quality. Discuss.) He veered ever-closer to his very own emotional arc, too, by asking to be on ex-wife Callie's service. Just one instance of this episode's particular knack for mending previous rifts and acknowledging series history while forging new partnerships — which, by the way, is the definition of a quality soap/drama.

Case in point, Izzie's brain surgery day brought everyone together and tore them apart at the same time, multiple times. We knew from the first second the doctors mentioned harvesting Izzie's eggs to save them from chemo destruction that Alex might have some quick thinking to do about the future. It was only a matter of time before he was contemplating whether to offer up some sperm (apparently the eggs keep better when they're fertilized). He did, with noticeably little deliberation, even if he did have some trouble, um, getting going on that sperm sample at first. (One can understand a guy not being particularly in the mood when his girlfriend is preparing for brain tumor surgery. ''This isn't how Izzie and I were supposed to make a baby,'' he told Meredith.)................ leaping

'Grey's Anatomy' star Kevin McKidd on his character's turning point this week and other explosive revelations - Mar 26, 2009
Since the moment Kevin McKidd walked onto Grey's Anatomy, his swashbuckling Iraq-war medic Dr. Owen Hunt has had us swooning for him almost as much as Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) was. Their star-crossed, post-traumatic-stress-disorder-impaired love affair has kept the show afloat even as it drifted through sex-with-ghosts storylines and a barrage of ill-advised guest stars. And now, as the drama suddenly rights its course heading into the final stretch of season 5, things will get even more complicated for Seattle Grace's hottest new couple. The Scottish actor (last seen on Journeyman) talked to us about Cristina and Owen's tough times ahead -- and what's to come (SPOILER ALERT!!) in the season's remaining bombshell-laden (weddings, therapy, brain surgery, etc.) weeks.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So this week features some pretty serious developments between Cristina and Owen.
KEVIN McKIDD: It's scary, what happens. Basically it's a night terror. He's unconscious and asleep and he starts to hurt Cristina. That’s his rock-bottom moment. So he starts to reach out for help. He starts to go into therapy and reach out to people like Derek Shepherd [Patrick Dempsey] to solve this thing. Derek at some point says, Look, this is treatable. With the proper treatment and therapy, you’re not trapped. I think that’s so important to talk about, with so many vets now. There’s such a stigma attached to admitting to something like that, and I think it’s important to discuss it in such a high-profile way.

How did you feel when you first took this role, knowing you'd be dealing with such a touchy issue?
We’ve worked on making sure this isn’t sort-of a fluffy representation of somebody who has this problem. He’s a good guy. He’s just deeply damaged right now. [When I started on the show], we knew he was a great trauma surgeon, and we knew he was going to get involved with Cristina. We didn’t know how much we were going to deal with the aftermath of being in the Iraq War situation. It was going to be more romantic then. But we realized pretty quickly that there was a lot there. It’s a really interesting opportunity for acting moments, and to follow the romance into that.

Do you think they really love each other, or are they just sort of clinging to each other for emotional support?
I think they’re really in love. I think Owen—I’m not speaking for Sandra, but I think Owen pretty much in the season premiere, Cupid’s arrow shot him in the heart when he saw her across the room. Something happened. And this whole season is about them fighting through all this crap so they can get back to that thing. What’s cool about it is they’re both such intellectual, badass people in their work. It’s cool to see that happen to these people who are so straight ahead, showing each other their vulnerable sides and not showing them to anyone else. And she’s such a good actor. I think we’re really bouncing off each other well.

Will this poor couple ever just get to have sex like everyone else at Seattle Grace?
I think they will. Just keep watching. A lot happens this week. I think they’ve drawn that one out a lot, and I know people are getting frustrated. I think it’s good because they’ve really connected on a mental and emotional level. And now I think it’s time they connect physically.

What's up with the rest of the season? There are so many rumors about weddings, and Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight leaving...
You’re only just scratching the surface [in episodes that have aired] with where this Izzie [Katherine Heigl] thing is going. All I know is they’re in every episode. She’s not dying, or at least she hasn’t yet. What I can tell you about T.R.'s character is Hunt sees something in him that no one has seen before. Because his character’s been kind of a dark horse this season. There’s an event that happens and I realize there’s a lot more to him, that he has a set of skills that maybe he isn’t even aware of. Hunt starts to mentor him in a way that gets really interesting. So that’s cool to see.

What has it been like, joining such a huge series with a history of off-screen drama?
I’ve always joined a show on day 1 -- and on top of that it’s a hit show, so I was expecting the worst. But the transition has been really nice. It might have been different a few years ago in the middle of the hoopla. But now everyone seems to have settled in; they’re all thankful to be there. I was nervous when I started. I didn’t really know the show. I watched the first two seasons because [creator] Shonda [Rhimes] wanted me to, but she said she didn’t want me to watch seasons 3 and 4 because she didn’t want Owen Hunt to know about the recent past. So I watched some to get a feel for the show, but I don’t know what happened with whoever and whoever, which is the way my character is.

After the incident this week, what's ahead for Cristina and Owen?
He’ll be focusing on himself for a while. He and Cristina will very reluctantly realize they have to separate, which is hard because they’re really, really involved with each other. But they know they have to have some time apart. It’s going to be pretty emotional. He’s having to heal himself. They’re so clever, these writers. Some episodes you think it’s so light and fluffy, but they’re ratcheting up the emotional stuff a lot in the last part of the season. And that’s good television. At the end of this season there’s going to be a big curveball for Owen and Cristina that neither of them see coming. Just as he starts to get over his thing, something else happens. Which is good and bad. It’s like, Oh my God, this is big. It will be interesting to see how it leads into next season.

LA TIMES

LA Times Show Tracker - 'Grey’s Anatomy': A night to remember - Mar 27 2009
Thursday night was not the night to miss “Grey’s Anatomy.” Derek returned to work at Seattle Grace. Izzie underwent — and survived — brain surgery. Owen nearly strangled the life out of Cristina. And Mer-Der finally got engaged. It was an episode in which much went down but nothing felt rushed, a genuinely moving installment that provoked laughter and tears. It was the kind of episode that made you nearly forgive, if not entirely forget, all the craziness that threatened to permanently derail the beloved drama earlier this season.

Tensions were running high as Derek prepared to operate on the tumor in Izzie’s brain (the first in a long line of surgeries and hellish treatments awaiting her, it seems). His confidence was thoroughly shaken, and it certainly didn’t help to have Izzie’s hard-nosed oncologist (Kimberly Elise) questioning his every move. For her part, Izzie tried to put on a brave front, knitting a bright green scarf and encouraging her friends to go about their usual rounds. None of her fellow Seattle Gracers, outside of Bailey, seemed to know how to deal with the enormity of what was going on so they kept their distance. Alex, taking over voice-over duties from Meredith this week, battled guilt over not questioning Izzie’s hallucinations of Denny, as he struggled to make a “deposit” that might still allow Izzie to have kids one day. Callie felt guilty too for often wishing Izzie dead after she had an affair with George. And George was so hurt by the fact that Izzie hadn’t shared her medical crisis with him — but had shared it with Cristina — that he was willing to work with his ex-wife for the day.

Cristina, for one, could be forgiven for being a little distracted. One moment she was sleeping peacefully and the next she was gasping for air as her Iraq war vet boyfriend, wiggy with post-traumatic stress disorder, tried to choke her to death. The scene was appropriately disturbing, as was Cristina’s behavior afterward. Not unlike a domestic violence victim, she was quick to make excuses for her guy’s violent outburst and just as quick to take him back after he profusely apologized. Wearing a turtleneck under her scrubs to hide the handprints on her neck, she went about her business at the hospital, pretending nothing out of the ordinary had happened. The aftermath of the attack wouldn’t have seemed like the ideal time to have sex for the first time, but one tender embrace in the on-call room later and off came the clothes. Lying beside him afterward, afraid to fall asleep, Cristina finally realized that maybe this was a situation she couldn’t handle after all. And, I admit, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Owen seems like a good guy in the grand scheme of things, but the dude clearly needs help, and, by the end of the episode, he had turned to Derek for just that.

Owen and Cristina would seem to have a long, bumpy road ahead of them. If they’re lucky, they’ll be able to work through their issues and come out the other side as healed and whole as Derek and Meredith. Could the scene where they finally got engaged have been any more perfect? For the couple who’ve weathered so many ups and downs, it took place, fittingly, in an elevator (and thanks to the chief, Meredith waited to board the right one). The doors opened and there was Derek, clean-shaven and radiating the full powers of his McDreamyness, surrounded by CT scans that marked pivotal points in their relationship, including the first time they scrubbed in together, the surgery that prompted their first kiss and their most recent case — Izzie — which proved Meredith could not only handle a crisis but could also get others, including her man, to face things head-on as well. “You say you’re all dark and twisty, but it’s not a flaw, it’s a strength,” Derek told her, as “Grey’s” fans surely collectively cheered. “It makes you who you are.” He did not get down on one knee, and he didn’t actually pop the proverbial question — there was no need. Rather, he told her, simply, beautifully, that he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, a sentiment she sweetly echoed. Engagements are a dime a dozen on TV, yes, but this one managed to feel both original and well-earned. ........

Owen tries to strangle Cristina on ‘Grey's’ Mar 26, 2009
Dr. McArmy scares Cristina, and Izzie’s surgery scares everyone - War memories plagued Owen Hunt, but he refused until the end of the episode to seek Derek's help.

Choke on it: Snoozing beside Owen turned dangerous for Cristina when McArmy woke up in the middle of a nightmare and tried to choke her. He apologized profusely, and Cristina was quick to forgive. Later, as Owen watched a helicopter’s blades, he began having flashbacks. Derek tried to persuade Owen to get treatment for post-traumatic stress, but Owen wouldn’t — he simply had sex with Cristina instead. Later, though, she confessed that she was afraid to fall asleep with him and they sadly broke up. But at least he finally went to Derek for help.

That’s what friends are for: Derek struggled with nerves before Izzie’s surgery, his first since his mountain-man trailer exile. When it came time to operate, he balked, wanting Meredith to agree to marry him first. Showing a rare modicum of sense, she refused, and he sucked it up and performed the surgery. Happily, success keeping Izzie alive inspired Derek to shave off his self-pity beard. Later, he decorated the elevator with mementos of past surgeries he’s worked on with Meredith (romantic!) and proposed again, and this time, she said yes.

Meanwhile, Izzie’s friends spent the day awkwardly avoiding her cancer room. George’s pain over Izzie’s failure to confide in him was the hardest to break through. It took a talking-to from Callie, of all people, to get him to wait with the others — including sweetly concerned interns — for her surgery to be over. Once Izzie came through safely, Bailey barked at her friends to do a better job in the future. ................ jump

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Elevator Love Letter" - Mar 26, 2009
In this episode of Grey's Anatomy, Derek works through the jitters as he returns to the OR for the first time since he lost his last patient, and Cristina continues to deal with Owen's post-traumatic stress disorder when it takes a seriously dark turn. Plus, Karev learns the importance of sticking by your loved ones while the other residents deal with Izzie's sickness in their own ways. So did Izzie come out of her first (of many) surgeries OK? Let's find out!

Hey guys, I'm Adam Bryant, srcubbing in for a travelling Erin this week. She will be back to her regular recapping duties for the next episode.

The episode opens with a Karev narration about how trauma messes everybody up, and truer words couldn't be spoken as far as this episode is concerned. Everyone at Seattle Grace is reeling in their own ways: Callie feels guilty for having felt angry toward Izzie after she stole George; George is furious that Izzie told Cristina instead of him; Derek is afraid Meredith won't stay with him if he is unsuccessful in the OR, and Karev is having trouble making his "contribution" to Izzie's harvested eggs.

That's right, the Chief comes to Alex to ask for a sperm specimen because harvested eggs perform better if fertilized. Although Alex agrees, he struggles with the decision, particularly because, as he says, "this isn't how Izzie and I were supposed to make a baby." It's nice to see Karev's emotional side peek its head out every now and then. But even so, Karev never told Izzie what he was doing, mainly because he didn't visit her throughout the day. Instead, he was tending to a very old patient who was on her last leg...and had been for three years. Although her family was initially pushy and impatient about flying out of Seattle (they had been coming across the country every time she almost died), they did help teach Karev a lesson: "Some people are better than no people." Karev put that lesson in motion when he allowed the interns to wait with the residents — who also had been avoiding Izzie all day — outside the OR, breaking the no loitering rule...... jump

VIDEO: Kevin McKidd Reveals What's Ahead for Grey's Anatomy's Haunted Dr. Hunt - Mar 25, 2009
Will Owen's PTSD get worse before it gets better? It sure looks that way.

As Kevin McKidd shares in Part 1 of his TVGuide.com video Q&A, the haunted Dr. Hunt once again — and to an even scarier degree — misdirects a nightmare at his lady love, Christina, in this Thursday's episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

Previewing this latest dark moment, McKidd tells TVGuide.com, "It's going to become a catalyst for him to really sort his stuff out and become whole again. He really loves [Christina] and wants to make things good for her, and not to be this burden."

In tackling such tricky fare, McKidd declares himself "lucky" to have Sandra Oh as a scene partner, saying, "She's such a committed artist."

McKidd also gives kudos to Grey's for journeying down this rocky road with his war vet. "Post-traumatic stress has a stigma attached to it, so I think it's great that the show is telling this story properly and exploring it and getting dirty with it," he says.

McKidd goes on to share how the depths of Owen's despair — and the advice of a certain peer — will lead him to seek help from Dr. Wyatt, the psychiatrist played by Amy Madigan. "It's hard for him," notes the actor, "because he's not the most verbal guy ... but they work through a lot of stuff."

Might it eventually lead to lighter moments for Owen and Christina? Get McKidd's answer at the 3:00 mark. VIDEO

Grey's Anatomy: Elevator Love Letter - Mar 27th 2009
S05E19) After the commercials continued to mention how wonderful Grey's Anatomy was going to be, I was brainwashed. This episode had to be good. For me, it delivered. In the first five minutes, we were given Owen's PTSD situation and it set the tone for the rest of the episode. Then we get the wonderful voiceovers from Alex, a good change from Meredith.

There were definitely serious tear inducing moments, along with two really funny situations. We also had a believable patient. When does this hospital get normal patients? Probably when they went down a few ranks. More thoughts and analysis after the jump.

The Owen/Christina situation is touchy. PTSD is a subject not often covered on television, and I appreciate that they are making mention of it. I'm sure there are many veterans that are too proud to admit things, and I hope shows like this (and the Real World: Brooklyn) pushes them in the right direction. I get why Christina couldn't sleep with Owen, but the two of them work really well. I'm not sure if it's just good acting by both Sandra Oh and Kevin KcKidd, or the fact that Christina's cold nature was warmed by Owen's situation. They work in that weird way that Meredith/Derek and Callie/Arizona work: opposites attract.................. leap

'Grey's Anatomy': Izzie's surgery, Owen lashes out -- and a ring - Mar 26, 2009
Tonight was not your average episode of "Grey's Anatomy" -- which you could tell from the opening moment, when Alex and not Meredith did the voiceover. But while everyone waited for Izzie to go into -- and then out of -- surgery, and while saw in an up-close and horrifying way what PTSD can do to someone, you couldn't help but come away with one thought: You need your people.

No one quite knows how to handle Izzie as a patient. Alex, Cristina and Meredith are trying to sort through their conflicting instincts to be both doctor and friend. George is beside himself and putting some distance between him and Izzie, because he feels as though he's been the last to know anything, and blown off when he tried to talk to Izzie about what was wrong. Outside Izzie's room before rounds, Bailey makes it clear to Grey, Yang and Karev that when they go into Izzie's room, they have to do it as her friends, because she'll be surrounded by doctors and she'll need them.

But their discomfort, agitation and helplessness is palpable, and they're only too eager to go off and be doctors when she tells them to go and save lives. Derek's the surgeon, and before he goes to the hospital he show's up at Meredith's with his bag -- and the ring. And she turns him down. Not like this, she says -- it's your first day back, and this has to be about Izzie. I cannot believe that this is Meredith, but she's amazing. During rounds we meet Izzie's oncologist, who is bossy and abrasive, so of course she's clearly the best, and she pretty much gives everyone in the room what for -- including Izzie. She passionlessly tells Izzie about the three surgeries in four weeks that she's scheduled for, including harvesting as many healthy eggs as possible before Izzie undergoes radiation. The will find more cancer that's spread, she says, and the aggressive and harsh treatment that they're going with is going to be tough.

Everyone has their role here. Cristina's being exceptionally watchful and working with the oncologist. Meredith's trying to be there for everyone. Alex is struggling to be brave -- and "answers the call" when the chief asks him for a specimen because Izzie's eggs have a better chance of surviving frozen if they're embryos. George is hiding on Callie's service. Callie's feeling guilty that she used to wish Izzie would die. And Bailey's taking care of Izzie. And if I were sick, the person I'd want looking out for me is Bailey -- so amen for that. Bailey is particularly brilliant when she quizzes Izzie about the surgery Bailey has coming up that afternoon, because she doesn't want Izzie getting rusty, since she'll need her skills when she's teaching a year from now. When Izzie asks if Bailey really thinks she'll be here a year from now, Bailey firmly and unhesitatingly replies, "Yes I do." .................... lot’s more if ya jump

Derek's nervous -- really nervous. And before he goes into the OR, he asks Meredith to marry him again. She says no -- not if committing to him so he can do the surgery will make it OK if Izzie dies. "I love you. You can do this. I know you can," she says. Rock on, Meredith. Before she goes under anesthesia, Izzie tells Bailey that if something goes wrong, the scarf she's been knitting in her room -- which she had time to finish since her friends didn't visit -- is for Bailey. During the surgery -- as Derek works his way through, with the oncologist second-guessing his every decision until he finally fights back -- even the no-good-very-bad interns assemble in the hallway to wait.

In the end, Derek was able to take out all of the tumor. Izzie will recover, and her post-surgery CT is clean. Bailey takes the opportunity to dress down Alex, Cristina and Meredith for not going to see her. But for now, at least -- chastised, battered and freaked out, there's hope. And on this front, Izzie's OK. Now, on to the next thing.

Another wonderful side effect: Derek seems to have gotten his mojo back. How he commandeered an elevator for long enough to turn it into a consult room displaying the files and scans of all the patients he and Meredith have saved, I don't know. But it's a really sweet way of walking through their relationship, to show her how he's known she's the right person for him -- and a way for him to show that he's coming out the other side. And he tells her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. She answers the same -- no asking, no accepting, just equals coming together. Ladies and gentlemen, we have an engagement.

But the day started a whole lot worse than it ended. Hunt stayed at Cristina's, and she awakens in the middle of the night to find him choking her, looking as though he's in a sleepwalking trance. Callie finally makes it into the room and snaps him out of it, but not before Cristina's hurt and bruised, Hunt is scratched, and everyone is shocked, scared and freaked out. Callie calls Meredith over, and between the two of them they're clearly wary and terrified for Cristina. But Hunt, who obviously was in the grip of something else, is really worried about Cristina, who ends up assuring him and everyone else that it's OK, he was asleep, and she's fine.

Like the good friend she is, Meredith doesn't let it lie. But Cristina isn't the sort to do anything she doesn't think she can handle -- and she tells Hunt so, as he's trying to break up with her. "Let me decide what I can handle," she says, as he pleads with her, worrying about what could have happened. Later Hunt freezes up on the roof when a chopper brings a trauma patient in, and Derek immediately spots what's going on. He talks to Hunt about a trial studying the brains of PTSD patients, and getting them some help, but Hunt snaps that he, the kettle, is not the one with the problem, pot.

There are really some beautiful moments between Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd in this episode, particularly when they finally sleep together in the on-call room (I mean really -- wowza). And when it turns out that Cristina can't handle being with him, because she's afraid to fall asleep. Hunt goes to Derek and agrees to get treatment.

Some other thoughts:

* A minimum of Mark and Lexie this week, which is fine -- excellent call not to force it. But the case of the dying old lady and her nephews and niece fit into the rest of the episode with a nice touch. They weren't vultures and they didn't want her to die. And they showed up -- they were her people.
* Also a really nice performance from Justin Chambers, who I've always thought was just a little too smarmy for his own good. He did great, heartfelt stuff in his scene with Meredith, talking about how he should've known something was up, and being anguished over the idea that this isn't how he and Izzie should be making a baby.
* I watched live without the benefit of a DVR this week, so I didn't count them, but heavens there were a lot of commercial breaks this week -- at least four in the first 30 minutes, and that seems conservative. I get that a barn-burner episode would generate a whole lotta ad sales, but holy moly -- was anyone else put off?

DATES TO REMEMBER & OTHER STUFF

Grey's Anatomy actor updates - Mar 22, 2009
here a few news bites from several of the Grey's Anatomy actors pre-scoured for your convenience. It's kind of odd reading about these people outside of their characters, but it's true: they are real people. We got some news from Patrick Dempsey, Chandra Wilson, T.R. Knight, and more:

Chandra Wilson to join cast of Chicago - This one's a little old, but noteworthy. Chandra Wilson, better known as Miranda Bailey, will be playing Matron Mama Morton in the musical Chicago starting June 8th and ending July 5, 2009. It's great seeing Wilson play another really strong character; I've never heard her singing chops, but she has a background in musicals, so I'm not doubting it.

T.R. Knight in three car accident – According to TMZ, Knight was in an accident on Hollywood Blvd. last Thursday. He was not injured, but a man and woman were taken to the hospital. I wonder if Knight channeled his inner medical doctor? I hope he made it home to watch Grey's Anatomy.

Anyone have $4 Million to spare? - Patrick Dempsey has listed his home in Bel-Air for $3,595,000. Apparently it has four bedrooms, but it has five and a half bathrooms. I find that proportion to be a little odd, but I'm assuming the house is as dreamy as Dempsey is.

Sharon Lawrence is going to guest star on Grey's - She is apparently coming on as Izzie's mother. That creates two assumptions: 1) Izzie lives long enough for her mother to show up and 2) Izzie dies and her mother has to show up to identify her. I'm assuming it's the former, since Heigl is probably going to stay for a while.

Elevator Proposal

Elevator Door #2 opens.... Derek stand front and center

Derek: Hey, come on in. This is a CT of Katie Bryce, 6 (16) year old female, cerebachnoid aneurysm.

Meredith: From a fall during rhythmic gymnastics, I remember.

Derek: That the first surgery we ever scrubbed in together. Our first save. Right here is a cerebral cyst, tough save but we did it. I kissed you in the stairwell after the surgery. And this right here is where Dr. Bailey kicked you out of the surgery because she caught us in your driveway in my car. And right here, this was a centimar craniotomy and you held the clamp the entire time and never flinched. That’s when I knew you were gonna be an incredible surgeon. And Beth Munroe made our clinical trial a success by surviving, you talked me into putting her under. That’s when I knew I needed you. And this is today, post-op head CT of Izzie Stevens. See that, right there? Tumor free, because of you. You got me into the O.R.. If there’s a crisis you don’t freeze. You move forward, you get the rest of us to move forward because you’ve seen worse. You’ve survived worse. And you know we’ll survive too. You say you’re all dark and twisty.... it’s not a flaw .... it’s a strength. It makes you who you are. I’m not gonna get down on one knee. I’m not gonna ask a question. I love you Meredith Grey, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

Meredith: And I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

Grey’s Anatomy gets it right about PTSD - March 27
The March 26, 2009 episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy accurately depicts Dr. Owen Hunt’s PTSD as a a real war wound and mental illness which is treatable.

PTSD is a brain disorder characterized by symptoms such as recurring nightmares, insomnia, depression, mood swings, and high levels of anxiety. This disorder has been linked to traumatic events such as combat stress and childhood abuse. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment with a wide variety of therapies along with medication, recovery can be achieved.

Magnetic imaging (MRI) studies and PET scans have identified areas of the brain where significant changes have been seen in patients suffering from PTSD. The primary area of focus is the hippocampus which plays a big role in short-term memories and emotions. The amygdala which controls emotional memories was first thought to be the primary focus, but more recent studies have shown the hippocampus may be the real link........ leap again
