5.16 - An Honest Mistake
Meredith: [voice over] There’s this thing that happens when people find out you’re a doctor. They stop seeing you as a person and begin to see you as something bigger than you are. They have to us that way, as gods, otherwise we’re just like everyone else. Unsure, flawed, normal. So we act strong, remain stoic, hide the fact that we’re all too human.

Meredith: [voice over] Patients see us as gods or they see us as monsters but the fact is, we’re just people. We screw up. We lose our way. Even the best of us have our off days. Still we move forward ... we don’t rest on our laurels or celebrate the lives we’ve saved in the past. Because there’s always some other patient that needs our help. So we force ourselves to keep trying, to keep learning ..... in the hope that, maybe, someday we’ll come just a little bit closer to the gods our patients need us to be.

GUEST STARS

Doctors Without Borders
It’s going to be double the drama on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice’s upcoming crossover episodes. Practice ups the ante beginning February 5 as Addison’s brother Archer (Grant Show), ailing with a brain disorder, returns to the Oceanside Wellness clinic. Then on February 12, two hours of strong medicine and stronger emotions play out when Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs) accompany Archer and Addison (Kate Walsh ) to Seattle Grace. Nothing far-fetched here: Sam, Naomi and Addison went to college with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dan) — and it’ll be up to neurosurgeon Derek to correct whatever’s wrong with Archer’s brain. The storyline continues through February 19. Expects some laughs, too, when Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) learns from the alums about a hidden talent her fiancé possessed during his years as a student. I’m told it’s something you’s see at a bad talent show. Please tell me its yodeling.

SpoilerTV has a Poll going and the results aren’t good for Addison.....

Kate Walsh "Might" Return - February 21, 2009
he rotating doors at Seattle Grace may welcome back another familiar face — again.

Private Practice star Kate Walsh, whose multi-episode Grey's Anatomy-Practice crossover stint concluded Thursday night, says you may not have seen the last of her on her former show.

"I might [come back]," she tells Us Weekly. "I'm not gonna say. Who knows what's in the mind of [show creator] Shonda Rhimes."

The actress says she was "really thrilled" to get the call to stop by Grey's again as "it's always fun to go back." But for now, she's content heading Oceanside Wellness on Practice. "I'm about to wrap Private Practice and I'm having a great time," she says. "I'm thrilled with the numbers, and I'm in a great place."

Do you want to see more Addison on Grey's, or has the past three weeks been enough?

SPOILERFIX SPOILAGE

Updated on February 12, 2009

Episodes 5.16: An Honest Mistake (Crossover episode with Private Practice, which airs at 10 p.m.)
Airdate: February 19, 2009

* 02/02 - Derek's confidence is shaken like never before as he faces off with Addison over what course is best for their dying pregnant patient; Cristina calls the abilities of a renown surgeon into question after she botches a standard procedure; and Bailey, who has decided to pursue a fellowship in Pediatrics, is appalled by the Chief's less-than-stellar recommendation letter. Source: ABC

* new 01/25 - Meredith learns from [Sam, Naomi and Addison] about a hidden talent her fiancé possessed during his years as a student. Source: TV Guide

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

General Spoilers:

* 02/12 - According to inside sources who work on Grey's, it is likely that Heigl and Knight will make an exit at the end of the current season. Both have asked to leave the show. However, ABC
needs to sign off on letting them out of their contracts, which has not been done. Source: Kristin on E!Online

* new 02/02 - [Bailey] receives some potentially career-altering news. [...] Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse [between Cristina and Owen] that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 01/25 - [Denny]'ll be around at least through March, since that's when Izzie's aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed. [...] Sources confirm [that Faye Dunaway] has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/12/2008 - New details are emerging about Jennifer Westfeldt's forthcoming arc as a patient on Grey's Anatomy. Or, I should say, new detail : She's married to Angels in America's Ben Shenkman. [...] He's not dropping by Seattle Grace to keep vigil at his ailing wife's bedside. According to a Grey's insider, he's a patient, too -- and a critical one at that. Like Westfeldt, Shenkman is signed on for multiple episodes. [...] [Eric Stoltz's serial killer character] is there to receive medical attention after he suffers a major beat down in prison. [T.R. Knight, who plays George, is in talks to be released from the show.] Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - Izzie's hallucinations are health-related -- and brain-related. And although the specific name of the ailment is being kept in the safe underneath Rhimes' desk, I'm told it's similar to an aneurysm. And every time it flares up, she sees Denny. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - A source close to the show tells me, "The reason [the actor] has not been on is because [he or she] has been a pain in the ass lately, trying to change scenes and dialogue, being hard to work with and putting up an attitude. The higher-ups were getting tired of it, so they tweaked [him or her] out of some episodes. That's why you haven't really seen [him or her] lately." A second source seconds that emotion: "[He or she] is not really getting along too well with producers right now." Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/26/2008 - Jennifer Westfeldt is joining Grey's Anatomy for a multi-episode arc. [... She] is coming on as a patient. [... The crossover will] take place over the course of three episodes (Feb. 5, 12, and 19) and the only confirmed participant as of now is Kate Walsh. [...] Denny will be haunting Izzie at least through February. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/20/2008 - "I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie, and Alex is among the most interesting we've ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can't wait for our viewers to see where we're taking it. But what it won't involve is Izzie having a brain tumor," [Shonda Rhimes revealed... Denny will] be in at least five episodes. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/08/2008 - Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps. Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut). Source: TV Guide Online
* 11/06/2008 - A female patient named Natalie wants to leave the hospital because she'll get fired from her job at a bar if she misses any more shifts. As the doctor taking care of her fixes a bandage before she goes, he notices that Natalie has many scars. Natalie also tells the male doctor that she's been flirting with him all day and that he should have reciprocated. Source: SpoilerFix.com [Note: This was set to occur around episode 9. It's unknown if it's been pushed to another episode or dropped.]
* 11/04 /2008- [The show] is now casting "star names only" for a "former military nurse who is maternal." Cristina most definitely has a "Major" romance coming on! Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/02/2008 - Jessica Capshaw (The L Word, The Practice) will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who's called in to consult on a case and winds up butting heads with Bailey. I hear that Capshaw has signed on for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more, and that she will make her first appearance midway through the season. Source: LA Times
* 08/28/2008 - [Dr. Addison Montgomery] may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. "I don't know if it's going to work with the story, and we don't want her to come back for a visit if it doesn't feel important, something only Addison can do," says Rhimes. "But the idea is on the table." Source: Entertainment Weekly

SCOOP-AGE & OTHER TRICKSTERS

The Ausiello Files

Question: What's up with the McFight on tonight's Grey's Anatomy? Is Derek hitting Mark over Lexie? -- Michelle
Ausiello: Kind of, but not really. It's a classic case of transference. Derek's really mad at Addison, but he ends up taking his frustration out on Mark instead. And man, do those two beat the crap out of each other. There's even blood!

Question: Can you give us some scoop on tonight's Grey's? -- Greysfan
Ausiello: Izzie finds out that her blood sample was mixed up (shocker!), which means she's suffering from something far worse than anemia (double shocker!). But what? Sadly, we have to wait until March 12 for the official diagnosis.

Question: Will we be getting any Callie-Arizona scenes on Grey's Anatomy this week? -- Alyssa
Ausiello: That's affirmative. Callie asks Arizona out on a date!

Source: Ausiello

Special Edition: Ask Ausiello about 'Grey's Anatomy' - Feb 2, 2009,
Question: How and when is Izzie's "condition" on Grey's going to be revealed? -- Sarah
Ausiello: Officially, the dead-guy-sexing resident won't be diagnosed for a few more weeks. Unofficially, however, we will get our first clue into what's ailing her at the end of Thursday's episode. There's another twist, yes, but luckily, it's one only an idiot wouldn't see coming. Here's a hint just for those special folks: Izzie isn't anemic.

Question: Is Dr. Bailey going to take over as the head cardio surgeon? -- Dee
Ausiello: While I can't confirm that, I can confirm that she receives some potentially career-altering news.

Question: Do you have any Grey's scoops? -- Bryan
Ausiello: Thursday's ep features one of the funniest, all-female group hugs ever. Also, there's a bawdy cafeteria scene that is so quintessentially Grey's that it reminded me how much I miss the good, ol' show. Oh, and did I mention the girl-on-girl action? 'Cause there is some!

Question: Anything new on Cristina and Owen? -- Gaby
Ausiello: Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Question: Can you help a girl out and give us anything on Cristina and Hunt? -- Erin
Ausiello: This may or may not shed light on the above spoiler, but this week marks the arrival of Laura Allen (Dirt) as a woman from Owen's past.

Question: It's my birthday, so I wondered if I can have some delicious NCIS scoop? -- Chris
Ausiello: Happy birthday, and... no. Sorry, this is a special edition of Ask Ausiello that focuses solely on Grey's Anatomy (see above for more). Check back on Wednesday for the regular non-discriminatory AA. That may have what you're looking for.

Question: My wife made me watch all five seasons of Grey's Anatomy, and I have to say I enjoyed every bit of it. My question is: Do you have an update on T.R. Knight? Is he leaving? -- Dennis
Ausiello: Nothing official's been decided, but I suspect Thursday's ep may have been the straw that broke the underused actor's back: George is literally on screen for about 10 seconds.

Question: Any Mer/Der news you can share? -- Lindsay
Ausiello: By the end of this week's episode, I'm pretty sure everyone in Seattle Grace (patients included) will have seen that damn ring except poor Meredith.

Karen: Could we have some Owen and Cristina scoop for the upcoming episode of Grey's Anatomy? And not that the ex-fiancée is coming back, because we're all over that, seriously.

Yeah, the ex stirs up a little drama, but Cristina and Owen have the sexiest exchanges in the hospital in Thursday's episode before she shows up. Now, it's not the crazy sex you're dying for, but your heart will melt none the less. In other romance news, Derek gets within an inch of proposing to Meredith, but an urgent phone call from Addison—about, like, Archer's brain tumor—takes precedence and ends that initiative. Priorities, people, priorities!

Kathy in Castle Rock, Colo.: Hi, Kristin! Any scoop on the fate of Izzie? Is she dying? I hope not. I love her on that show!
This week, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) finally gets proactive in figuring out what's wrong with her, using the interns to run every test imaginable without their knowledge. The tests show up clear, but here's the kicker: There may very well have been a mix-up, and Izzie could very well be dying. (Sad clown.) The good news for you Denny haters? Either way, Denny will be gone for good very soon, because Jeffrey Dean Morgan is leaving the show to shoot a new movie with Hilary Swank called Resident. How do we all feel about this? And do you want Heigl to stay? Comment below!

Deirdre: Is Addison going to hook up with McDreamy?
Survey says: No!

Grey's Anatomy: Do Derek and Addison Kiss? - Jan 30, 2009
Dear ABC Promo Dudes,
Could you please stop freaking out the fans of Grey's Anatomy?
Thanks to your latest promo for next week's Grey's and Private Practice crossover—in which it appears that Addison (Kate Walsh) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) are going in for a kiss—we're getting hundreds of emails from panicked MerDer devotees.
"If Addison and Derek kiss, I swear I am never watching Grey's or Private Practice again!" Susan from Omaha writes.
Now, we know that's not true. Like the rest of us, Susan won't be able to keep herself away. Still, if you don't mind, it would be nice if you could trim that apparent smoocharoo out of your promo. (It's about 18 seconds in, and you can see it in the video box below.)
Thank you very much.
(Oh, and P.S.: Thanks for letting us know Charlotte on Lost isn't really dead.)

-----------------------

Dear Grey's Anatomy fans,
Step away from the ledge! I have a sneak peek of the big crossover episode for you, and the definitive answer on whether Derek and Addison really do kiss...

Video here

Despite the smoochy-looking moment in the clip above, a source tells me of Addison and Derek: "No, there's no kiss. They are still just friends. And there is no romance between them in the crossover episode."
Instead, the romance comes from Derek plotting his marriage proposal to Meredith, and Lexie and Sloan going public. See for yourself in the sneak-peek photo gallery below...

SIDES & SUMMARIES

Episode 5.16 - Casting Sides Summary - January 08, 2009
Thanks to Crys from TWoP for the summary.
Sides for episode 5.16 are out and it's just for one character.

Mr. Terzian (50's)- He's awake after having surgery. Dr. Smith is there and Dr. Walters is examining his leg. Dr. Walters says they'll get him an X-ray and he'll probably need a cast but he should be up on his feet in a few weeks. Mr. Terzian says he doesn't know what he was thinking because he knew the wound wasn't healing as fast he hoped. Dr. Smith explains that sometimes that happens when they don't do the surgery laparoscopically but with the technique they used they were able to move around and see more. Mr. Terzian doesn't doubt that they did the right thing. Dr. Smith says they're going to treat the infection with antibiotics.

Next scene is in Mr. Terzian's room and Dr. Vernon is talking to him while Dr. Smith stands off to the side. Dr. Vernon explains that the scans showed a complication from the surgery (a lacerated bile duct and vessel) and he'll need another surgery to it. Mr. T is overjoyed that that's the only thing wrong with him because he thought he was dying when he was told the Head of General Surgery was coming to talk to him. Dr. Vernon says he just wanted Mr. T to know he's within his right to request a new surgeon. Mr. T asks if Dr. Smith isn't available and Dr. Vernon says she is. He says Dr. Smith saw him through his first round of appointments and surgery, that she saved his life so he chooses her.

Dr Vernon must be Richard (Chief of Surgery). Maybe Callie (ortho) is involved. It seems a strange case - he has a fractured leg that requires as cast but he has also had recent keyhole surgery for abdominal problem e.g. gall bladder. I wonder, if he had the operation on this gall bladder, was discharged and became unwell due to an post-op infection, had a fall and then was readmitted with a broken leg as well as his post-op complications? Bailey would most probably be the doctor Dr Vernon (the Chief) is talking about.

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS ~ EPISODE PLAYLIST

Song Title

THE BRAVERY - An Honest Mistake

People
They don't mean a thing to you
They move right through you
Just like your breath
But sometimes
I still think of you
And I just wanted to
Just wanted you to know
My old friend...
I swear I never meant for this
I never meant...

Don't look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
Don't look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
An honest mistake

Sometimes
I forget I'm still awake
I f*** up and say these things out loud

My old friend...
I sweat I never meant for this
I never meant...

Don't look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
Don't look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
An honest mistake

Don't look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
Don't look at me that way
It was an honest mistake
An honest mistake

EP RECAP

02/19/2009 - "An Honest Mistake"
Season 5, Episode 516

Addison delays her return to Los Angeles to help with Derek's pregnant patient, Jen, who's suffering mini-strokes and needs another surgery. The husband tells them, "If it comes down to a choice, save my wife," and not the baby. The first surgery goes well but then Jen crashes again and Derek insists that he can save her, even if it means taking out her temporal lobe and eventually her frontal lobe. He can't control the bleeding, however and Addison announces she has no choice but to deliver the baby. "I can save her," he tells Addison, ordering her to wait.

"This has gone too far," Addison insists, "Even if she does live, you are creating a monster. You don't get to play God here." She picks up her scalpel to begin the C-section and Derek shouts at her to put it down. The rest of the O.R. watches the tense standoff in disbelief. Addison tells Alex to go get the Chief and Derek orders, "Do not touch my patient, Addison." Addison appeals to Meredith, who has been assisting Derek. She tells him that it's too late to save Jen, but they can still save the baby. When Richard arrives, he gently tells Derek it's over.

Alex, Addison and Derek break the news of Jen's death to her husband and he wants to know the details. All a guilt-stricken Derek can say is, "I'm sorry." "You killed her, you're a murderer," the man yells at Derek.

When Callie and Cristina examine a patient's recent stitches, they see evidence of a botched surgery, thanks to Dr. Campbell, the legendary first female surgeon at Seattle Grace. Owen wants to page Dr. Campbell, as it's her patient, but Cristina says, "What? And have her maim the guy again? We page someone who actually knows how to operate instead of some dinosaur who refuses to put down her scalpel and go join her friends in Boca." Unfortunately, Campbell is standing right behind her at the time and announces, "The dinosaur is here. No need to page me."

Owen thinks Cristina's too hard on people, but she insists that Campbell is "old and out of touch." In examining the patient's X-rays, Cristina sees evidence of a major error, and presents it to the Chief. Richard informs Campbell's patient that a complication during surgery -- his bowel was nicked -- requires a second surgery. Richard advises the patient that he can request a different surgeon, but he wants to stick with Campbell.

Cristina insists that the patient doesn't understand the situation but Richard barks at her to "Back down." However, he makes a point to watch the operation. While she's operating, Campbell criticizes Richard, her former pupil, for his soft teaching methods and Cristina for her lack respect. When Cristina calmly states that the current surgery was only due to Campbell's mistake, Campbell orders her out of her O.R.

After the surgery, Campbell admits to Richard that she made a mistake, but it's not until Owen tells her of his discharge from the Army that she decides to give up surgery. "They knew it was my time, even if I didn't. I'm grateful to them for that," he says.

Owen tells Cristina that today she was in the right, but that she was also a "bully to someone who needed compassion." He says she's a lot like Dr. Campbell. "Forty years from now, I'm going to have to pry that scalpel out of your hand, too," she agrees she won't want to give it up, but he says she's missing the point: He still wants to be there for her forty years from now.

An angry patient confronts Izzie: She'd been told she has cancer. In reality, she's only anemic, and she's convinced that someone at the clinic mislabeled her blood sample. "Don't apologize to me, I'm just anemic," says the woman, "You apologize to that dying person." Izzie realizes "that dying person" must be her.

She takes out the paperwork on her own blood test: It reads "anemic." She does a self exam and finds a suspicious-looking spot on her back. Izzie makes an appointment with dermatology, where the doctor insists that it's probably nothing.

Callie asks Arizona out on a date, but Arizona turns her down when she realizes that Callie's only dated one other woman before her. "I spend my entire day around newborns, so I try not to in my personal life," she explains. Callie approaches Arizona at Joe's and insists she has lots of experience in other areas, but she makes the announcement in front of Arizona's date for the evening.

Miranda needs a letter of recommendation from the Chief so she can specialize in pediatrics, but when he finally hands it to her, it's just a form letter, with words such as "serviceable" and "fine." "I am better than fine," she storms. Miranda confronts Richard about his less-than-glowing letter and he snaps that he's wasted his time grooming her to become "the next me," if she wants to "leave him" and become a pediatric surgeon. "I am not your son or daughter. You don't get to pin all your hopes and dreams on me, sir," she protests.

Mark picks the absolute wrong time to tell a shattered Derek he's sleeping with Lexie and Derek hauls off and punches him. The two get into a violent free-for-all and Owen has to pry them apart. Lexie arrives to comfort Mark and he tells her, "It was worth it."

Izzie chews out her interns for the labeling mix-up, but tells them they're lucky because they get to save lives. She presents them with a case of a "29-year-old female who we misdiagnosed with anemia. Let's not make the same mistake again," she says.

Grey Matter

Pete Nowalk on "An Honest Mistake"...

Original Airdate: 2-19-09

When you’re writing an episode about God-like doctors it helps to have God-like actors playing them. Which is pretty much what happens every week when you work on Grey’s Anatomy. Sometimes though you get an extra dose of God, or as was the case in this episode, many extra doses. Kate Walsh visiting from Private Practice? Check. Jennifer Westfeldt and Ben Shenkman playing a husband and wife suffering through round after round of nailbiting surgery? Double check. A certain Oscar-winning actress who is as close to God as one can get in Hollywood?

Yup, I’m talking about Faye Dunaway. Faye Dunaway who was in some movies called Bonnie & Clyde, Chinatown, and Network. Faye Dunaway who was nominated for 3 Academy Awards. Faye Dunaway who was kind enough to lend her genius to Grey’s and, by doing so, make me one giddy writer.

When we come up with characters in the writers’ room we usually have hoop dreams about the actors who could play them. A beautiful model whose face was scarred in a terrible motorcycle wreck? Let’s call her Angelina. An ex-President in need of a quadruple bypass? Call Bill Clinton’s agent. A legendary surgeon who can both inspire and scare the crap at of us with just one look? We need someone like Faye Dunaway. Not that she’d ever agree to do it…

“She agreed to do it? Are you FOR REALS SHONDA??!!” That was me when I found out Faye had signed on to play Dr. Campbell, Seattle Grace’s first female surgeon. Actually I’m still pinching myself from the whole experience. Watching Faye transform herself into this character was a gift. Not only was she fun to watch, but she was also so lovely, generous, and prepared through the process. And when I say prepared I mean that Faye did so much research for her surgery scene that I now personally trust her take out my gallbladder. I’m not kidding. Faye Dunaway knows how to do a cholecystectomy. That is dedication, people.

So that’s my love letter to Faye Dunaway. I guess you could say my adoration is not so different from the way patients come to feel about their doctors. When you allow someone to cut into you and poke around in your very delicate, very fine-tuned insides you have to trust that they’re an extra special breed of human. It’s like what Addison told Derek in last week’s episode – that she needed him to be a God in order to trust him to save her brother’s life. And Derek, as usual, was up to the task. Even better, as Mark Sloan told him this week, he looks good doing it. The dude’s a God, no doubt about it…

Now at this point I imagine some of you are about to yell at your computer. Or at me. Yell something in the vein of “THEN WHY THE HELL DID YOU LET HIM CUT OUT THAT WOMAN’S FRONTAL LOBE AND MURDER HER?!! YOU’RE THE MURDERER. A DEREK SHEPHERD MURDERER!!” Or maybe that’s just what I yelled at myself when we were breaking this story in the writers’ room. A lot of the writers felt the same way. We were nervous to have Derek make a mistake that could possibly be attributed to a patient’s death. But after much discussion – and real life research with real life surgeons – we agreed that this was a story we had to tell. Doctors, like the rest of us, mess up. And when they do, well…

Okay, I get it, this is whole doctors making mistakes thing is not the most uplifting topic for a blog. Debbie Downer is not who I’m trying to be (even if, deep down, that’s exactly who I be). I guess all I really want to say is that you need to keep watching in order to understand why we chose to tell this story with Derek. It might not be the easiest thing to watch – seeing one of your heroes become human – but it will pay off. Besides, we have to give every person bold enough to work in medicine credit. Frankly it’s why I’m very happy that my job right now is to write this blog and not, say, cut an aneurysm out of a pregnant woman’s brain. When I think about this – the frigging pressure doctors are under everyday – it doesn’t surprise me that they’d have some issues to deal with. Or how they might need to punch the crap out of each other every once in awhile.

How’d you feel about that fight? Personally I found it hard to watch. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good argument. But with words. Verbal sparring is more my style than some bloody, violent, broken face brawl. I didn’t even know what to write for this scene so I think I put some line in the action that said “Mark and Derek kick the crap out of each other, etc., etc…” and left it up to the director and crew and actors and to figure out the rest. Choreographing a fistfight on a tiny catwalk that hovers 200 feet in the air (in a real hospital by the way) is not an easy feat. And for that I’d like to give major props to Randy Zisk and Herb Davis and everyone on the crew who made the fight look so freaking real. Meanwhile I stayed back by the craft service table and watched the whole thing through my fingers. And just wait till you see the fallout from the fight in future episodes. Again, it’s not going where you think…

Know what else isn’t? Meredith and Derek. And that’s all I’m going to say. Because saying anything else would get me fired. Besides, you actually don’t want to know. If you’re like me you watch TV because it’s enjoyable and surprising. Telling you anything more will just take away from your own personal enjoyment of a story. (How’s that for playing coy?)

Onward. How about that gnarly wound Dr. Campbell left her patient with? Dissssssssgusting. Cristina, being Cristina, felt this mistake was unacceptable. Owen, being Owen, thought it simply proved that surgeons are human. No need to judge there, missy. Owen’s take of course is informed by the fact that he has made a few mistakes himself. A secret ex-fiance who appeared in last week’s episode, for example. And now he’s finding himself involved in a relationship with someone who, for better or worse, holds people to very high standards. Still, what I love about these two is that their professional disagreement didn’t get in the way of their sexy sexiness. At the end of the day they can still sit down, have a drink, and say things like, “I want to be around you 40 years from now.” Hot damn.

Back to the depressing stuff. Namely, Izzie. Who is not anemic. Sadie mixed up the blood samples (as many of you guessed, gold stars all around). Now by the end of this episode Izzie has her correct test results in a folder. We debated back and forth about this moment in the writers’ room. Should we know what’s in that folder before Izzie goes to teach her interns? Or should we delay it, revealing what Izzie knows only as her interns figure it out? Having watched the episode, and knowing what happens in the next, I think we made the right decision. Shonda’s been pitching this scene of Izzie putting her scans up for the interns since the start of the season so it was exciting to finally to watch it come to life. Regardless of what’s going on with Izzie – be it nothing or some dire diagnosis that might or might not explain the Denny of it all – a day like the day Izzie’s had in this episode could break a lot of people. I wouldn’t blame her for just wanting to go to Joe’s and get wasted. Instead Izzie chose to use this very difficult moment in her life as a teaching moment. It’s selfless. And admirable. And I love her for it. Just wait till the next episode where we find out more about Patient X.

Are you annoyed with all this “wait and see” stuff?? I know, I’m actually annoyed at myself. Which is why I won’t do the same thing with Callie and Arizona. I will say this though. I totally understand why Arizona wouldn’t want to date a newborn. It’s like getting a Freshman as your Physics lab partner even though you’re a Senior who not only knows the Laws of Motion but has mastered them in ways that would rock that Freshman’s world. Which is not to say the Freshman won’t grow to be really good at Physics, or that Callie won’t catch up to Arizona on the lesbian front, it’s simply that Arizona might not have the patience to wait that long. You, however, should. Have the patience. Because this story man…

I am officially stopping with the teasers. No more carrots dangled. Really. Not about George. Or Bailey and her Peds fellowship. Or Alex and his secret love child with the Chief’s secretary Patricia. Okay, made that last one up. But to be honest there’s a small part of me that’s jealous I don’t get to watch the show from my couch along with the rest of you every week… I’m lying. Because I’m about to go into the writers’ room to work with the rest of the staff on episode 521. That’s only 3 episodes from the end of the season, people. 3. And boy are you gonna be floored. Okay, last time I do that. Really…

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.16 "An Honest Mistake" Recap - February 19, 2009
Previously on Grey's Anatomy: Addison arrived and after Derek cured her brother, she started consulting on a case of a pregnant woman with brain problems. Derek made a small mistake and accidentally caused a bleed in her brain.

Tonight the epic Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice crossover comes to a close. Your normal Grey's recapper Debbie Chang is off at a fancy party with The Bachelor's Jason Mesnick, so look forward to some cool exclusive scoop on Jason in the next few days.

Now to Grey's Anatomy, where Meredith tells us about how normal people look at doctors like gods. The big problem comes when the doctors start seeing themselves like that, as Derek (Patrick Dempsey) is undoubtedly doing.

The pregnant woman with the word salad needs emergency surgery, but her husband tells Derek and Addison that if they're forced to choose, they should save his wife and let the baby die.

During the surgery, things go wrong for the mom, but Derek still feels guilty for his mistake so he does everything he can, including cutting out large chunks of her brain. Addison (Kate Walsh) thinks the woman is dead and wants to remove the baby, so she threatens to perform a C-section while Derek prepares to cut out the mom's frontal lobe. It's a Mexican stand-off with scalpels instead of guns....... read on

CINEMA BLEND

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - An Honest Mistake - Feb 20, 2009
Tonight’s episode seems to be about not being able to let go and harassing the Chief over it. Derek cannot let go of the patient whose aneurysm he nicked lord knows how many episodes ago, The Chief can’t let go of his plans for Bailey being the next Chief, Sloane just can’t quit Lexie, Izzie can’t let go of her own craziness, and Faye Dunaway plays a surgeon who can’t let go of surgery.

…with wacky results. Except not really.

You’d think that after at least three episodes, I could remember this lady’s name, but I can’t. The pregnant lady who ran over her husband is still around and going under for what we hope is one more surgery to repair a bleed. The surgery takes so long that Addison is about to remove the baby to save its life, but Derek finishes just in time. The lady can talk normally again and everyone’s happy…for about five minutes, until she has another complication and they have to take her in again. This time, the only solution that Derek can think of is to remove parts of the woman’s brain while her baby slowly runs out of time. Things get incredibly tense with everyone questioning Derek’s judgement (the dude looks tired and out of it, but refuses to relinquish control) and Addison wanting to at least save the baby. Derek pretty much just tells everyone to kiss his ass and stay out of the way, so Addison sends Alex to get the Chief, who makes Derek let the patient go (she has almost no brain left anyway) and Addison save the baby.

The husband, as one would expect, does not take the death of his wife, whom he was repeatedly told was undergoing routine procedures, well at all and calls Derek a murderer.

'Grey's Anatomy' recap: Gods and Monsters - February 20, 2009
Derek crosses a line trying to right a wrong, Cristina takes on an older doc whose time has passed, and Izzie finally finds out what's wrong with her
This Grey's Anatomy episode proved one thing: Good guest stars are a good thing. (Parade of endless mediocre/bad guest stars, giving the impression that writers are throwing every midlevel star in Hollywood up against a surgery room wall to see what sticks? Not good.) Faye Dunaway rocked it. (And note to Hilary Duff: Her face looks phenomenal — aged, but beautiful — for a lady of her years.) Jessica Capshaw's starting to gel, thanks to Callie's romantic interest in her. And Kate Walsh, well, nothing will ever convince me she doesn't belong at Seattle Grace. I actively squirmed seeing her back in Private Practice land after Grey's. ''Admit it,'' Alex teased Meredith about Addison. ''Her being around your guy bugs.''

''Okay,'' Meredith answered. ''It bugs a little.'' No! No, it doesn't! Don't send her back! I know, I know, she has to go. But I honestly hope they don't bring her back to Grey's again anytime soon — it's just too painful a tease. As for Ms. Dunaway....When Cristina started crabbing about how some old lady surgeon named Dr. Campbell had botched a guy's surgery, I thought, Oh, God, no, not another new random doctor. Funny how everything changed when it turned out to be Faye. She made me care. She commanded her story line. She blended seamlessly, going toe to toe with — and, in fact, being one of the few people who could quite possibly even bury — Sandra Oh (who called her ''ye olde timey,'' among other things). This is how, and when, you bring in a guest star. Tyne Daly. Faye Dunaway. They are worth every extra second of my attention span. ..............continues

Derek and Addison face off on ‘Grey's’
And guest star Faye Dunaway gives Cristina a glimpse into her own future - Feb 19, 2009
The return of the plot: When last we left Pregnant Aneurysm Lady — actually named Jen — Derek had caused a complication and punished himself accordingly. After a risky procedure, she stabilized, then decompensated again.

This week, after she was again stable, Addison told Jen that she had preeclampsia (the same condition that killed the mother in the notoriously devastating “ER” episode “Love’s Labor Lost,” to which this episode bears a strong resemblance). When Derek didn’t want Jen to be told what was wrong, Addison sensed that he’d become too guilt-ridden to exercise good judgment.

Surgery goes south: During Jen’s next surgery, her condition deteriorated. Derek removed her temporal lobe, startling everyone, but when it got even worse and he wanted to take out her frontal lobe — which all agreed would leave behind little of the person Jen’s husband knew — Addison and Derek wound up in a standoff. They stood poised over Jen with scalpels, Derek rather senselessly wanting to remove most of her brain to keep her nominally alive, risking the baby’s life; Addison claiming Jen was gone and wanting to save the baby.

The big finish: Ultimately, the Chief stopped Derek, Jen died, and the baby was delivered. Jen’s husband put Derek through a wrenching “you’re a murderer” grief-driven breakdown, which sent Derek into such a spin that he wound up in a brutal fight with an unsuspecting Mark, who chose exactly the wrong moment to reveal that he’s sleeping with Lexie.

Dunaway we go: Faye Dunaway played Dr. Campbell, an older physician Cristina considered well past her prime, and who had botched a gall-bladder surgery performed conventionally rather than laproscopically. It became clear that it was time for Campbell to retire, which she finally did, but not before lowering the boom on Cristina, predicting a future much like her own, where the end of surgery would be the end of everything.

No surprises: Izzie learned her blood had been switched on an earlier blood test. A patient who thought she had cancer turned out to have only anemia, sending Izzie on a wild goose chase of lymph-node exploration. Ultimately, she sneaked over to dermatology to have a mole addressed. The episode ended without a firm verdict on the mole, but Izzie looked grim as she set the interns to the task of diagnosing a not-so-routine “Patient X.”

Rote recommendation: Bailey was baffled when the Chief gave her only a so-so recommendation for the pediatrics position she’s now decided is her destiny. After seeing that her performance was “fine,” she set out to right the situation. The Chief eventually admitted that he wasn’t thrilled about helping her escape succeeding him, so she got by on recommendations from Addison and — surprisingly — George, who unsurprisingly was wandering the halls looking for something to do.

Pilot News: Who Is Grey's Boss Shonda Rhimes' New McDreamy? - Feb 19, 2009
A drama pilot being shepherded in part by Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes has found its "McDreamy."

Inside the Box, from Richard Robbins and exec-produced by Rhimes and Betsy Beers, is set in a Washington news bureau and revolves around Catherine, a hard-hitting producer. Playing coworker Jake — aka the Derek to Catherine's Meredith — will be Martin Henderson.

The New Zealand-born Henderson previously landed the male lead in a never-picked-up ABC pilot based on Mr. & Mrs. Smith, where he would have played Brad to Jordana Brewster's Angelina.

The female lead role of Catherine has yet to be cast.

Not going Inside the Box, it should be noted, is Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Although Grey's Anatomy's erstwhile Denny had been set as the male lead in a similar pilot Rhimes had cooking two pilot seasons ago — one centered on a group of female journalists — sources stress that Inside the Box is a distinctly separate project.

Instead, Morgan is busy fielding feature film offers, his spokesperson tells TVGuide.com, and next can be seen on the big screen in Watchmen (opening March 6).

In the meantime, Morgan's in talks to appear in The Losers, a comic-book adaptation in which he would play the leader of a special forces team, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Fans can also find him in The Resident, a forthcoming thriller with Hilary Swank.

'Grey's Anatomy': The arc ends: a fistfight and god talk - Feb 20, 2009
Technically, this episode of Grey's Anatomy was the end of the "crossover arc," but it was just pretty much Addison working on Derek's case and a lot of conversation about who was a god and when. Plus there's another freaky guest star.

Spoilers ahead, but I'm going in laparoscopically...

Fighting to save her: The centerpiece of the episode is Jen (Jennifer Westfeldt), the lovely pregnant patient who accidentally ran over her husband, Rob (Ben Shenkman) and turned out to have an aneurysm. Derek operated on her to repair it, nicked it, caused complications, she began having strokes and the baby got really sick. This week everything's getting fixed with a bypass, and a freaked-out Derek doesn't leave her side for days on end. Addison's there to watch the baby -- and Meredith and Karev do kind of a funny "my guy/your guy" banter. But as Jen's being wheeled away, Rob tells Addison to make no mistake: if it comes down to a choice between his wife and his baby, save Jen.....contd
