Episode 5.15: Before and After
Meredith: [voice over] Every patient’s story starts the same way, it starts with them being fine, it starts in the ‘before’. They cling to this moment this memory of being fine, this ‘before’, as though talking about it may somehow bring it back. But what they don’t realize is that the fact that they’re talking about it to us, their doctors ..... means..... there’s no going back. By the time they see us they’re already in the ‘after’. And while every patient story starts the same way how the story ends depends on us, how well we diagnose and treat. We know the story hinges on us, and we all want to be the hero.

GUEST STARS

Doctors Without Borders
It’s going to be double the drama on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice’s upcoming crossover episodes. Practice ups the ante beginning February 5 as Addison’s brother Archer (Grant Show), ailing with a brain disorder, returns to the Oceanside Wellness clinic. Then on February 12, two hours of strong medicine and stronger emotions play out when Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs) accompany Archer and Addison (Kate Walsh ) to Seattle Grace. Nothing far-fetched here: Sam, Naomi and Addison went to college with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dan) — and it’ll be up to neurosurgeon Derek to correct whatever’s wrong with Archer’s brain. The storyline continues through February 19. Expects some laughs, too, when Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) learns from the alums about a hidden talent her fiancé possessed during his years as a student. I’m told it’s something you’s see at a bad talent show. Please tell me its yodeling.

SPOILERFIX SPOILAGE

Episodes 5.15: Before and After (Crossover episode with Private Practice, which airs at 10 p.m.)
Airdate: February 12, 2009

Updated on February 5, 2009

* new 02/05 - It turns out Archer's tumor is a lot more serious than anyone imagined. It's not a tumor at all-he has parasites on the brain. Archer refuses treatment until he cannot make the decision for himself, which is when Addison, Archer and Naomi fly off to Seattle. Source: Kristin on E!Online

* new 01/28 - Addison, Naomi and Sam rush the ailing Archer to Seattle Grace and reunite with old friends Derek and Mark to help save his life; meanwhile, Izzie employs her fellow doctors in a medical game designed to help teach the interns, and Owen runs into a significant someone from his past. Special guest stars are Kate Walsh as Addison, Audra McDonald as Naomi and Taye Diggs as Sam. Also guest starring are Grant Show as Archer, Jennifer Westfeldt as Jen, Ben Shenkman as Rob, Laura Allen as Beth, Sam Anderson as Michael, Steven W. Bailey as Joe, Brandon Scott as Intern Ryan with Melissa George as Sadie. Source: ABC
* new 01/25 - Playing Owen's ex-lover will be Laura Allen. Allen will guest-star in this season's 15th episode, which is shooting this week (and also marks Melissa George's final appearance as Sadie). [...] George told reporters at the Golden Globes that while Sadie will not get a big send-off, her departure will have a certain coolness to it. Source: TV Guide Online
* new 01/25 - Two hours of strong medicine and stronger emotions play out when [Private Practice's] Naomi and Sam accompany [Addison and her ailing brother Archer] to Seattle Grace. Nothing far-fetched here: Sam, Naomi and Addison went to college with Derek and Mark -- and it'll be up to neurosurgeon Derek to correct whatever's wrong with Archer's brain. The story line continues through February 19. Source: TV Guide [Note: If you want to have the background info needed about Archer's condition, you should watch the February 5 episode of Private Practice.]
* new 01/25 - They're grooming [Airzona] as a love interest for Callie, so I suspect she'll be staying put for now. Speaking of which, look for Callie to seek advice from Addison about her feelings for Arizona in the Feb. 12 crossover episode. Source: The Ausiello Files

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

General Spoilers:

* new 02/02 - [Bailey] receives some potentially career-altering news. [...] Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse [between Cristina and Owen] that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 01/25 - [Denny]'ll be around at least through March, since that's when Izzie's aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed. [...] Sources confirm [that Faye Dunaway] has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/12/2008 - New details are emerging about Jennifer Westfeldt's forthcoming arc as a patient on Grey's Anatomy. Or, I should say, new detail : She's married to Angels in America's Ben Shenkman. [...] He's not dropping by Seattle Grace to keep vigil at his ailing wife's bedside. According to a Grey's insider, he's a patient, too -- and a critical one at that. Like Westfeldt, Shenkman is signed on for multiple episodes. [...] [Eric Stoltz's serial killer character] is there to receive medical attention after he suffers a major beat down in prison. [T.R. Knight, who plays George, is in talks to be released from the show.] Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - Izzie's hallucinations are health-related -- and brain-related. And although the specific name of the ailment is being kept in the safe underneath Rhimes' desk, I'm told it's similar to an aneurysm. And every time it flares up, she sees Denny. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - A source close to the show tells me, "The reason [the actor] has not been on is because [he or she] has been a pain in the ass lately, trying to change scenes and dialogue, being hard to work with and putting up an attitude. The higher-ups were getting tired of it, so they tweaked [him or her] out of some episodes. That's why you haven't really seen [him or her] lately." A second source seconds that emotion: "[He or she] is not really getting along too well with producers right now." Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/26/2008 - Jennifer Westfeldt is joining Grey's Anatomy for a multi-episode arc. [... She] is coming on as a patient. [... The crossover will] take place over the course of three episodes (Feb. 5, 12, and 19) and the only confirmed participant as of now is Kate Walsh. [...] Denny will be haunting Izzie at least through February. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/20/2008 - "I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie, and Alex is among the most interesting we've ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can't wait for our viewers to see where we're taking it. But what it won't involve is Izzie having a brain tumor," [Shonda Rhimes revealed... Denny will] be in at least five episodes. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/08/2008 - Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps. Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut). Source: TV Guide Online
* 11/06/2008 - A female patient named Natalie wants to leave the hospital because she'll get fired from her job at a bar if she misses any more shifts. As the doctor taking care of her fixes a bandage before she goes, he notices that Natalie has many scars. Natalie also tells the male doctor that she's been flirting with him all day and that he should have reciprocated. Source: SpoilerFix.com [Note: This was set to occur around episode 9. It's unknown if it's been pushed to another episode or dropped.]
* 11/04 /2008- [The show] is now casting "star names only" for a "former military nurse who is maternal." Cristina most definitely has a "Major" romance coming on! Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/02/2008 - Jessica Capshaw (The L Word, The Practice) will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who's called in to consult on a case and winds up butting heads with Bailey. I hear that Capshaw has signed on for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more, and that she will make her first appearance midway through the season. Source: LA Times
* 08/28/2008 - [Dr. Addison Montgomery] may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. "I don't know if it's going to work with the story, and we don't want her to come back for a visit if it doesn't feel important, something only Addison can do," says Rhimes. "But the idea is on the table." Source: Entertainment Weekly

---------------------------

Special Edition: Ask Ausiello about 'Grey's Anatomy' - Feb 2, 2009,
Question: How and when is Izzie's "condition" on Grey's going to be revealed? -- Sarah
Ausiello: Officially, the dead-guy-sexing resident won't be diagnosed for a few more weeks. Unofficially, however, we will get our first clue into what's ailing her at the end of Thursday's episode. There's another twist, yes, but luckily, it's one only an idiot wouldn't see coming. Here's a hint just for those special folks: Izzie isn't anemic.

Question: Is Dr. Bailey going to take over as the head cardio surgeon? -- Dee
Ausiello: While I can't confirm that, I can confirm that she receives some potentially career-altering news.

Question: Do you have any Grey's scoops? -- Bryan
Ausiello: Thursday's ep features one of the funniest, all-female group hugs ever. Also, there's a bawdy cafeteria scene that is so quintessentially Grey's that it reminded me how much I miss the good, ol' show. Oh, and did I mention the girl-on-girl action? 'Cause there is some!

Question: Anything new on Cristina and Owen? -- Gaby
Ausiello: Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Question: Can you help a girl out and give us anything on Cristina and Hunt? -- Erin
Ausiello: This may or may not shed light on the above spoiler, but this week marks the arrival of Laura Allen (Dirt) as a woman from Owen's past.

Question: It's my birthday, so I wondered if I can have some delicious NCIS scoop? -- Chris
Ausiello: Happy birthday, and... no. Sorry, this is a special edition of Ask Ausiello that focuses solely on Grey's Anatomy (see above for more). Check back on Wednesday for the regular non-discriminatory AA. That may have what you're looking for.

Question: My wife made me watch all five seasons of Grey's Anatomy, and I have to say I enjoyed every bit of it. My question is: Do you have an update on T.R. Knight? Is he leaving? -- Dennis
Ausiello: Nothing official's been decided, but I suspect Thursday's ep may have been the straw that broke the underused actor's back: George is literally on screen for about 10 seconds.

Question: Any Mer/Der news you can share? -- Lindsay
Ausiello: By the end of this week's episode, I'm pretty sure everyone in Seattle Grace (patients included) will have seen that damn ring except poor Meredith.

Karen: Could we have some Owen and Cristina scoop for the upcoming episode of Grey's Anatomy? And not that the ex-fiancée is coming back, because we're all over that, seriously.

Yeah, the ex stirs up a little drama, but Cristina and Owen have the sexiest exchanges in the hospital in Thursday's episode before she shows up. Now, it's not the crazy sex you're dying for, but your heart will melt none the less. In other romance news, Derek gets within an inch of proposing to Meredith, but an urgent phone call from Addison—about, like, Archer's brain tumor—takes precedence and ends that initiative. Priorities, people, priorities!

Kathy in Castle Rock, Colo.: Hi, Kristin! Any scoop on the fate of Izzie? Is she dying? I hope not. I love her on that show!
This week, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) finally gets proactive in figuring out what's wrong with her, using the interns to run every test imaginable without their knowledge. The tests show up clear, but here's the kicker: There may very well have been a mix-up, and Izzie could very well be dying. (Sad clown.) The good news for you Denny haters? Either way, Denny will be gone for good very soon, because Jeffrey Dean Morgan is leaving the show to shoot a new movie with Hilary Swank called Resident. How do we all feel about this? And do you want Heigl to stay? Comment below!

Deirdre: Is Addison going to hook up with McDreamy?
Survey says: No!

Grey's Anatomy: Do Derek and Addison Kiss? - Jan 30, 2009
Dear ABC Promo Dudes,
Could you please stop freaking out the fans of Grey's Anatomy?
Thanks to your latest promo for next week's Grey's and Private Practice crossover—in which it appears that Addison (Kate Walsh) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) are going in for a kiss—we're getting hundreds of emails from panicked MerDer devotees.
"If Addison and Derek kiss, I swear I am never watching Grey's or Private Practice again!" Susan from Omaha writes.
Now, we know that's not true. Like the rest of us, Susan won't be able to keep herself away. Still, if you don't mind, it would be nice if you could trim that apparent smoocharoo out of your promo. (It's about 18 seconds in, and you can see it in the video box below.)
Thank you very much.
(Oh, and P.S.: Thanks for letting us know Charlotte on Lost isn't really dead.)

Ask Ausiello - January 28, 2009
Question: What is the cast of Private Practice going to do over at Grey's? -- Kelly
Ausiello: Filling Mer's pretty little head with shocking stories about Derek's early days ** * **********. And believe me, that's not a good thing. Funny? Yes. Good? No.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Lost,' 'House,' 'Gossip Girl,' 'The Office,' 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Medium,' 'Chuck,' '24,' 'Brothers & Sisters,' and more! - Jan 20, 2009
Question: If Denny is all in Izzie's head on Grey's Anatomy, how can he appear in scenes without her, like the one in last week's episode where he was sitting on the edge of the bed with Alex? -- Stephanie
Ausiello: That's a great question. Let me ask ABC president Steve McPherson and get back to you. Because if I learned anything at press tour last week, it’s that McPherson loves to discuss the goings-on at Grey's, both on screen and off.

Question: Seriously, how much longer is Denny going to be around for on Grey's? Love Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but it's just not working for me. -- Lauren
Ausiello: He'll be around at least through March, since that's when Izzie's aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed.

Question: I am loving the new doc Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) on Grey's Anatomy. Any news on whether they plan to keep her on? -- Amy
Ausiello: They're grooming her as a love interest for Callie, so I suspect she'll be staying put for now. Speaking of which, look for Callie to seek advice from Addison about her feelings for Arizona in the Feb. 12 crossover episode.

ET ---- E!Online

More Details on 'Grey's Anatomy' 'Private Practice' Crossover - February 05, 2009
There have been mixed reactions on the impending crossover between Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off Private Practice. Some fans of the show think it's a plot to get people to watch one of the two shows, while others are just scared that the whole thing might jeopardize the so far smooth-sailing MerDer union.

And for good reason, since the new cross-over will feature Addie Montgomery (Kate Walsh) asking help from her ex-husband for a case that is very close to her heart. Meanwhile, ET recently caught up with executive producer Shonda Rhimes who willingly shared some of her insights on the crossover.

"It started with two things," Rhimes explains. "It started with a medical case that I heard of and thought would make extraordinary television. That started it, but we also had a really strong Derek Shepherd storyline that we wanted to tell that needed a lot of ways of telling and this provided that."

Apparently, Addison decided to take her brother Archer (Grant Show) to Seattle Grace after he suffers a severe seizure to be treated by the best brain surgeon in the world – McDreamy.

Dear Grey's Anatomy fans,
Step away from the ledge! I have a sneak peek of the big crossover episode for you, and the definitive answer on whether Derek and Addison really do kiss...

Video here

Despite the smoochy-looking moment in the clip above, a source tells me of Addison and Derek: "No, there's no kiss. They are still just friends. And there is no romance between them in the crossover episode."
Instead, the romance comes from Derek plotting his marriage proposal to Meredith, and Lexie and Sloan going public. See for yourself in the sneak-peek photo gallery below...
http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b81446_greys_anatomy_do_derek_addison_kiss.html

A 'Grey's Anatomy' Wedding Proposal?
Now that his mother has met Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Derek, aka Dr. McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey), wants to take their relationship to the next level and present her with an engagement ring. But he knows she is going to freak -- commitment-phobe that she is -- so he tries to get Cristina (Sandra Oh) to help him. But Cristina and Meredith are still on the outs.
Also in this episode, Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) grows desperate as the young boy under her care is running out of time -- and there is no organ donor in sight. That is, except for the death-row patient (Eric Stolz) who is in the hospital hoping to die at Seattle Grace rather than being executed.

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS ~ EPISODE PLAYLIST

Before And After

Before And After - RUSH

Love won't see me comin'
On a Sunday noon today
Still don't believe we're fadin'
But now the world should wait

And now you're finally listenin'
To what I have to say
Well, the time is right
And it is today

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Maybe we could talk about it
And try to get it straight
After all these years, baby
Maybe it's too late

But I really need to
Have you by my side
And that's the only feelin'
Baby, I can't hide

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Well you aren't listenin'
I ain't talkin'
We ain't gettin' nowhere

I keep tryin' to get through to you baby
All you do is stare

I don't wanna see that
I need you by my side
Well, I don't want to be your lover
Babe, I wanna be your man

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Well, now my story's over, baby
And I ain't gonna tell it twice
Well, you better start listenin'
Or get out of my life

Or you're gonna be left out
I said left out in the cold
Yeah, before you get my lovin'
Babe, you'll be too old

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Well, I'm talkin' to you baby
Well, I said yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

EP RECAP

02/12/2009 - "Before and After"
Season 5, Episode 515

Addison arrives at Seattle Grace with her brother Archer, who's collapsed due to a parasite in his brain. Archer suffered a seizure during sex with his girlfriend, Naomi, who also happens to be Addison's best friend.

Derek announces that surgery is not an option as Archer has eight cysts in his brain, any one of which could burst during surgery and kill him. Derek consults with the best doctors and they all agree the case is hopeless.

"I need to believe that you can do this, that you can save my brother. I need you to be a God, just today," Addison begs him.

Callie finds Addison in the chapel, trying to pray. "You're an amazing doctor, you save babies. God knows who you are," Callie assures Addison.

Sam, Naomi's ex and a fellow doctor at the Wellness Center in LA, urges Derek to consider treating the cysts one by one. Derek decides it's doable and talks a reluctant Archer into having the surgery.

A middle-aged man has been keeping the fact that he has colorectal cancer from his daughter. To complicate matters, the daughter, Beth, was formerly engaged to Owen and both Owen and Cristina are treating the patient. Owen tells Cristina it's okay to ask questions about his ex-fiancee, but she declines. Beth thought he was still in Iraq and is shocked to find out that even Owen's mother doesn't know he's back. She realizes her father is seriously ill when he starts spitting up blood. Owen rushes the father into surgery and afterward, tells the daughter that there was a lot of dead tissue he couldn't save. She demands to know why Owen broke up with her via a two-line email. Instead, he tells her the truth about her father's cancer. Owen confesses to Cristina that he's been keeping up the pretense that he's still in Iraq to spare his mother the pain of seeing the son she sent to war "gone." "I don't want her to look at me the way Beth does," he tells Cristina, saying, "You're the only one that sees me."

Izzie comes up with a project to reignite the interns' interest in medicine. Sadie is having a hard time with the "fun" challenges, while Lexie breezes through and wins the big prize: Scrubbing in on Derek's craniotomy. After witnessing Sadie's difficulty with the challenge, George offers to help. She tells him she doesn't need a tutor, but he points out that by now she should be able to diagnose whether a patient needs surgery. "They think you can," he tells her. "Sadie, you can hurt someone," he yells after her as she walks away.

George tells Sadie she needs to inform the Chief that she's in over her head, or else he will. She quits, telling Meredith, "I'd rather be a quitter than a cheater," revealing that she cheated on her entrance exam as she's "not book smart" and had expected to learn as she went. She wants Meredith to go back to Europe with her and relive their glory days, but Meredith refuses: "I don't want to sleep my way through Europe any more. I want to be here."

Meanwhile, seeing all of Derek's old friends and hearing about how he sang and played guitar at his wedding to Addison makes Meredith realize there's a side of Derek she doesn't know at all.

A pregnant patient with an aneurysm, whose surgery was delayed due to the Archer emergency, begs Derek to do her surgery tonight, rather than make her wait until the next morning. There's a complication during the craniotomy but Derek, with Lexie's help, solves the problem.

Mark congratulates Lexie on winning the contest. Addison sees them talking and, picking up on their flirtiness, introduces herself to Lexie. When Derek joins them, Addison is about to comment on the new couple until Mark abruptly changes the subject.

Addison and Mark hit Joe's and she says she's no longer sad about past relationships. "Seeing Archer in the OR just changed my perspective." She wants to know when Mark's going to tell Derek about Lexie and he says, "I'm working on it."

Derek walks in, to loud cheers. "You were a god, today. You slew dragons and you walked on water," Addison tells him. Surrounded by their old friends, they sing the song that Derek composed for Addison, which can't help but be bittersweet for the former couple.

Back at the hospital, the pregnant patient starts seizing and Alex shouts, "Page Shephard. Now!"

Grey Matter

Tony Phelan and Joan Rater on "Before and After"...

Originally aired: 2-12-09

Hi there Blog readers. This is Joan and I hope you liked tonight’s episode. Tony and I really liked writing this one – we loved the scary worms in the brain surgery that our amazing medical researchers Moira and Elizabeth came up with; we liked the idea of Owen’s ex-fiance showing up, imagining who she was, picturing the moment she first saw him again. And we always like singing, cause we’re really big musical theatre nerds so the idea of Derek writing a song for Addison way back when cracked us up and then the fact that Taye Diggs and Audra McDonald, both Broadway singers, would actually perform said song … well … come on!! But I’m rambling, which I do when I’m excited and I have a lot to say, so let me calm down and try to be organized here. Actually, screw it, I’m just going to ramble because it’s late where I am (11:07 – I just watched American Idol and think it’s gonna be a great season although I DO NOT understand how they cut Danny’s friend Jamal, but, oh now I’m rambling and it isn’t even on topic … )

Here’s how the episode came to be. Life was simple. Tony and I were scheduled to write it. We were excited. We had some ideas. Some fine ideas. Like I said, life was simple. And then Shonda came in the writers’ room one day all excited and talking a mile a minute about an awesome idea she just had. And when Shonda is all excited with ideas pouring out of her it’s infectious and you find yourself getting all excited and agreeing with her that yes, it would be really cool to have Addison’s brother, Archer get some really bad brain condition that Derek has to fix so he has to come to Seattle Grace. And of course Addison would come and her friend Naomi would have to come and then Sam, Naomi’s ex-husband and one of Derek’s old friends would show up and be like, “I don’t know why I’m here, but I’m here” and how cool would it be to have Derek’s whole past come into the hospital right at the point where he’s ready to move into the future with Meredith and oh, how about a scene where they meet Meredith and it’s all awkward and it’s gonna be awesome and before you know it Shonda has left the room to tell casting and production about the super cool cross over episode we’re doing with Private Practice and we were left in the writer’s room going, WAIT, we’re writing a cross over episode???

I’ll admit, I panicked a little. Because we had this cool opportunity that you don’t get too often for two shows to kind of meet, and have an impact on one another and I wanted to do it justice. And I thought that the thing we really can do with this cross over is show another side of Derek, I just wasn’t sure what that side was. So we started to talk about it. We always imagined that Derek and Addison met in med school in gross anatomy class and basically fell in love over a cadaver. I know, romantic, right? But for them I’m sure it was. And we decided that Derek and Addison were probably the first of any of their friends to get married and it was probably an amazing wedding and then someone in the room told a story about this wedding they went to once where the guy sang a song he had written for his wife about how they met and fell in love. Now, ten years later, whenever anyone who was at that wedding sees this couple, they demand that the song be sung. Hearing this story I suddenly knew that Derek had to be that guy. Because I love that guy. And because it tells you so much about this group of friends, who all remember the song. They all thought Derek and Addison would be together forever and now here they are, ten years later, divorced. And Naomi is divorced. And Archer is maybe going to die. And so they need the song, they want the song, they want to go back ten years, when it was all so hopeful and happy and no one was dying.

Now here’s the thing – they don’t really want to go back. Derek and Addison don’t want to go back to being together, that’s not the point. The point is …. It’s like when you look at a picture of yourself from ten years ago and you can’t believe how much you’ve changed. And you don’t really want to go back there, because you like your life and everything and you certainly don’t want the bad haircut back or the ugly bridesmaid’s dress, but you look at yourself and your old friends in the picture and you realize you haven’t spoken to that friend in years, that person you used to speak to every day, EVERY DAY, and you suddenly, desperately miss that person and have no idea how you got to the point where you don’t even know where they live. THAT is the feeling we wanted this episode to have. So we needed a song that would help give us that feeling.

A word about the song – Krista Vernoff wrote it. In like 20 minutes. I had written a bunch of lyrics about Derek and Addison meeting over the cadaver but it didn’t have music and it didn’t evoke that FEELING of bittersweet nostalgia that I knew it should, so I called Krista and asked her to give it a try because she’s actually a songwriter and she called about 20 minutes later and sang me the song over the phone and I cried. And then the day we shot the scene I cried watching it because the actors were so great and it had been such an amazing week, having Kate Walsh back. And while at first it was weird seeing Addison with Naomi and Sam because it was like, Wait a minute here. You’ve moved on and made new friends? What about us? What about the fun we used to have? But then when I saw the chemistry that the Private Practice people have together I was able to get over myself a little and be like, okay, fine, you can have your new big hit show and your new fabulous friends, I’ll be happy for you, I guess.

Anyway, we don’t often talk about how we come up with the stuff for our episodes … so here’s a couple more things. You know the scene where Addison tells Derek she’s had to make him small and put him in a tiny box just to get through the day? The idea for that scene came from Shonda and it came before we even knew what the episode was about. All we knew was that Derek was going to operate on Archer. We also knew we wanted a moment before Derek went into the OR where he was having a moment of doubt. So the tiny box scene came out of that discussion.

What else? Izzie and the Intern Bowl. At the beginning of each season we do tons and tons of research. We research medical stories, but we also spend a lot of time talking to doctors and residents about their training. How they learn to cut and sew and suture and diagnose and all the other non surgical stuff they have to do. Anyway, in our research we heard about a residency program that had what they called a Surgical Olympics, with events and prizes and we knew it would be a perfect story for us. And it felt like this was the right place to put it, that it would be Izzie’s idea because she’s been so involved with the interns and she’s at a place where she needs to believe in them. Because in the last episode she had them run all sorts of tests on her and they came out normal and Izzie really wants to believe she’s fine (even though deep down she knows she’s not, did you see her hands shaking?) so the Intern Bowl is Izzie’s way of proving to herself that the interns don’t suck, that she’s fine, that Denny was wrong. And instead of proving that, the Intern Bowl showed that Sadie is a fraud. She cheated and bribed her way through school and basically showed up at Seattle Grace thinking her old friend Meredith would help her get through residency. But she didn’t take into account the fact that Meredith has changed. She’s happy and in love and good at being a surgeon. She’s not the same girl who drank and slept her way through Europe. It’s a bittersweet moment when Sadie and Meredith stand together at the end, both aware how much they’ve changed.

Which brings me to Owen and Cristina. Owen clearly has a lot of damage. He’s seen a lot and been changed by all the trauma he’s lived through. He is not the same man he was before. And Beth (his ex fiancée) wants to believe he can be that man. She wants to believe that if he comes home they can go back to the way they were. As for Cristina, even though she believes that Owen is dark and damaged, she’s not looking away. And the fact that she sees him, really sees him, is like a lifeline to him.

We have spoken to several war veterans about what it’s like to come back. It’s really important to us that we get this right, that we don’t shy away from the difficulty people have who come back from war. And part of that difficulty is that people who knew them still think of them as the person they were before they left even though fundamentally they may have changed. And this episode is where Owen’s past comes back to smack him in the face and really make him see how much he’s changed.

Oh, one more thing – Meredith and Derek. One thing I sort of love about this episode is that although Addison is back in the hospital, Meredith is fine. She and Derek are solid and it’s not that weird for her to see Addison. It’s weird for all of Addison’s friends, but I think it shows what a good solid place the Mer/Der relationship is in that she’s not freaking out about Addison, she’s having more of a reaction to seeing Derek with his past. He had a whole life before her. I liked exploring the idea that you never really know a person. On the one hand, that can be scary and make you feel left out, but on the other, it makes life interesting … there’s always more to someone than meets the eye. And on that note … I think I’ll stop my rambling and go to bed. After writing this, I’m kind of in the mood to look at old pictures but that usually ends up in me calling old friends. Old friends who may not appreciate the call because they’re probably sleeping. On the other hand, they are old friends so they’re more likely to forgive me.

The Emerald City Bar

Live from Seattle - It's... Derek Shepherd?!

I’m a good guy. A kind-hearted fella who keeps his bar open for people during certain times of need. I don’t ask for much in return. A simple “thanks,” a handshake or even season tickets to the Seahawks would suffice. But, a song – written by one of the world’s leading brain surgeons, performed by several of the world’s leading doctors – well, I would never accept such an extraordinary token of appreciation… Only tonight, I did!

Derek Shepherd. Son. Brother. Friend. Neurosurgeon. Singer-Songwriter?!?! Yes, indeed, folks. Once upon a time, renaissance man Derek Shepherd apparently played the guitar and wrote folksy love songs for all his lady friends. Tonight, one of his little gems made its way to Seattle Grace, courtesy of Mark Sloan, Addison Montgomery and Sam & Naomi Bennett – God bless ‘em all.

With Addison’s brother in the hospital and the whole gang back together, I figured it was going to be a late night at the bar. So I kept my doors open WAY past closing time (solely for Derek and crew), and, I’m certainly glad I did. Hearing Mark Sloan SING was soooo worth staying up until 6 AM! Now I know why Mark opted for plastics instead of some freaky boy band. The dude CANNOT sing. Naomi and Sam? Yeah, sure… they can carry a tune. But, Mark Sloan? Well… I’m pretty sure my man is tone deaf.

I could tell Derek was pretty embarrassed by the whole thing. The word is that he wrote this song for Addison, and performed it at their wedding. Sadly, I didn’t hear Derek sing his now-infamous (yet touchingly-poignant) lyrics aloud tonight (I would’ve paid for that), but I DID get to hear McDreamy’s songwriting skills. And, I must say, not bad… If you’re into that sorta thing:

…Addison Montgomery
I met her in the summer, she
Was cutting up a very dead body
But in her eyes I saw my life
I knew she would become my wife
She would breathe the life back into me
For every day until eternity
Or until we were as dead as that body…

Okay, so perhaps it’s not the most radio-friendly or Top-40-worthy tune you’ve ever heard. And, maybe – just maybe – Derek should stick to removing worms from people’s brains. But, you gotta admit, it’s got a certain charm. Dude. I’ve gotta figure out how to work my webcam so you can see this stuff for yourself.

I wonder if Meredith heard about her boyfriend’s “hidden talents.” It’d be just a little awkward, considering that song was written at a time when Derek and Addison thought they’d end up together, forever, breathing life into each other until the end of time… Oh, man, I hope Mer didn’t hear the song herself…

Derek just took off, but Addison, Mark, Naomi and Sam are still here – dancing to some old-school jukebox tune. Oh how I’ve missed Addison! She cut her hair and got a tan – I must say, she’s looking pretty good. The question remains, however – why the hell hasn’t she found a man in LaLa Land yet? This woman is a catch, people! Well, I suppose some lucky guy will snatch her up soon. She certainly never had a problem at Seattle Grace…

Alright, as much as I like all the reminiscing, it is TIME FOR THE NIGHT TO END. I’ve got to go! Last call was four-and-a-half hours ago. I miss the twins and I KNOW that Walter is NOT going to be happy, seeing how I’m about to head home at 6:30 in the morning (thank you, Red Bull). I told Addison to stop by tomorrow – if she gets the chance – so I can get the full scoop about her life down in Los Angeles, and, of course, hear about any uncomfortable moments with the always lovely, (hopefully) soon-to-be-engaged, Meredith Grey. I’m always down to hear about that.

Until next time…

- Joe the Bartender

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.15 "Before and After" - February 12, 2009
The Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice crossover event begins (or rather "continues" because I guess last week's episode in which Addison made a two-second phone call to Derek at the very end of the episode counted as a crossover). Addison (Kate Walsh), Naomi (Audra McDonald) and of course, Archer (Grant Show) who has parasitic worms in his brain, spill out of an ambulance at Seattle Grace Hospital. Do they know that Seattle Grace dropped to number 12 in the rankings now? I wonder if they would have chosen to go to another hospital if they knew this information. They rush Archer into an ICU room where he starts seizing because of a reaction to a drug they are giving him. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) orders them to stop the IV drip, and when Archer starts crashing, they order a crash cart to start his engines back up again.

Bailey (Chandra Wilson) has cleared her schedule to help support Addison. Derek exposits to Addison that her brother hates him, that he hated him long ago when Addie and Derek were still together. Naomi sheepishly admits that she's sort of with Archer now, and Derek and Naomi chit-chat awkwardly and incredulously about how their tight-knit medical school group has become so dysfunctional and broken now..........cont’d

Grey's Anatomy: Spotlight on Cristina-Owen - February 10, 2009
The last episode of Grey's Anatomy showed us a pretty new dynamic in the Yang-Hunt thing – whatever it is – and judging from the comments, everybody loved it. Cristina, the hardened cynic, and Major Hunt, the hot army surgeon with a lot of baggage, brushing hands ever so slightly on the corridors of Seattle Grace, flirting like crazy like high school kids after sending each other crazy mixed signals in the past.

As for me, I can't help but feel a little weirded out by Hunt. Of course, there's probably some logical, perhaps even medical explanation to how he reacted upon seeing the mystery girl (who, if we'd remember some news way back, will turn out to be someone from his past). The way he reacted upon seeing this woman was downright bizarre, and it just goes to show that there was a lot going on in Owen's (Kevin McKidd) past. And if anyone is capable of knowing how the past can go back to haunt us, it's Cristina (Sandra Oh).

Initially, we already know that Owen is a “tortured” character who is "fighting his own set of demons," little did we know that it is this intense. Do we like people with a lot of baggage? We are fans of Grey's Anatomy. Of course, we do.

With the way the audience is reacting, however, it seems that this new tandem might just overshadow the central couple MerDer. Then again, with that crossover with Private Practice coming up, something will be shaking in the so far calm MerDer waters. And the fact that it all happened oh so close to the proposal will probably make it doubly heartbreaking.

Going back to Owen and Cristina, however, if we'd remember, McKidd was originally cast for a no more than five-episode arc. In an interview, McKidd had described Oh's character as his “soulmate.” For his part, it seems that the character of Major Hunt figures as an encouraging and welcome counterbalance to the jerks that are the other guys.

Obviously, as Owen and Cristina are equally intense people, a relationship between the two will predictably be intense. There is very little drama yet, just pure passion. Perhaps it was a welcome break from all the drama between the other couples, namely MerDer, and those who just didn't make sense, such as Dead!Denny! and Izzie, and Gay!Callie! and Arizona.

CINEMA BLEND

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Before and After - 2009-02-13
Archer’s brain tenants have multiplied! Addison prays! McBadass tends to lose touch with family and friends, just like me! It’s revealed that pretty much nobody likes Archer, which makes me feel less guilty. Annnnnnnd an intern finally gets to scrub in on a surgery.

Addison, Archer, and Naomi arrive via ambulance at Seattle Grace. While Derek is trying to find a way to operate, word spreads throughout the hospital that Addison’s in town, to the delight of most.

Derek discovers that the initial single cyst in Archer’s brain has multiplied into eight, meaning the worms are spawning. Derek doesn’t think he can maneuver the probe without breaking one of the cysts, and decides he can’t operate. Addison gives him a speech about needing him to be a god and save her brother and goes off to pray, something she apparently never does.

Derek keeps looking at the CT scans and still sees no way to pull the operation off until Sam shows up and suggests that Derek just remove each cyst as he goes. Archer begins to refuse until Derek calls him a coward and goes into a rant about how all neurologists are cowards, preaching drugs and non-surgery until there’s no choice and then passing the patient on to a neurosurgeon so they won’t have to take responsibility. Derek says he’s ready to take responsibility and questions if Archer is as well. It’s a very harsh speech, but Archer’s an ass so nobody cares and it apparently does the job because Archer agrees to the surgery. ...........cont’d

Videos From Grey's Anatomy Private Practice Crossover Ep - 2009-02-07
You know, I thought the whole penis-fish story arc in Grey’s Anatomy a couple seasons ago was kind of nasty but brain worms? Ew. This week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy will feature some of the cast of ABC’s GA spinoff series Private Practice, who are in need of Derek’s expertise. We have some clips from the episode to share with you. (Spoilers ahead!)

If you’re like me then you haven’t watched passed the pilot episode of Private Practice and have no idea what’s going on on that show. Fortunately, our Grey’s recapper Dustin was kind enough to cover last week’s episode of Private Practice as well so those of us who aren’t down with PP can know a little bit about what’s going on in Addison’s world. You can read Dustin’s recap of the episode here, which explains why Addison is coming back to Seattle Grace.

In a nutshell, her brother (played by Grant Show) has what he thinks is a brain tumor and turns out to actually be worms and eggs in his brain. I’ll give you a moment to swallow the vomit in your mouth. Good? Ok, from the clip below, Derek doesn’t look too optimistic about Archer’s chances. And in non-PP news, Miranda’s taking the whole pediatric surgery idea seriously enough that she’s applying for a fellowship. But is she really cut out to be a Ped?

*insert gagging reflex*
Okay..... So I knew about the worms..... BUT nowhere did it say anything about worms AND EGGS!!!
*gags ..... repeatedly

LA TIMES

'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice' prepare for a joint operation - February 8, 2009
'Grey's Anatomy' and spinoff 'Private Practice' are crossing over as fan discontent mounts. Will the experimental surgery save viewers' patience?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

NY Post Article - February 09, 2009
'GREYS Anatomy" is barely hanging on, struggling to keep viewers from pronouncing the show dead.
"Grey's" started out as a fresh and quirky hospital drama that focused on the personal lives of the doctors rather than bizarre medical anomalies, but in recent seasons has distracted viewers with disturbing patient cases and depressing plotlines.
This year, love is back on the fever charts.
Desperate for a ratings boost, ABC has paired "Grey's" with its spinoff, "Private Practice," in a two-hour crossover event this Thursday, which will feature the return of Addison Forbes Montgomery (Kate Walsh) to Seattle Grace Hospital.
The timing couldn't be worse for the show's main character, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
Despite having its ups and downs, the only remnant of the good old days on "Grey's" is the romantic relationship between Chief of Neurosurgery Derek "McDreamy" Shepard (Patrick Dempsey) and resident Meredith.
Last week's episode was supposed to end with Derek's marriage proposal to Meredith, which would have been a landmark event for fans rooting for MerDer to find their version of happily ever after.
"Supposed to" because, alas, McDreamy's plan went awry when he received an urgent call from his ex-wife Addison, begging for his help saving her brother's life and setting up this week's crossover special.
Fans seem to cling to Derek and Meredith because the rest of the "Grey's" world has fallen to pieces around them.
Several original characters on the show have found their lines drastically reduced or rendered irrelevant.
George OMalley, played by T.R. Knight, had the misfortune of being paired in one of the worst on-screen relationships ever with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), and now it takes 30 minutes for him to even make an appearance in an episode.
Reformed jerk/lothario Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), who's sup posed to be in a relation ship with Izzie now, also finds himself without a solid storyline.
Connecting the dots here is Izzie, who's gone from being one of the most emotionally riveting cast members to a sigh-inducing spaz.
It seems as though "Grey's" writers, led by creator Shonda Rimes, are exacting revenge on Heigl by giving her the worst storyline to date: a fling (yes, sex included) with her dead former patient and soulmate, Denny Duquette.
Heigl made waves when she withdrew her name from Emmy contention last year saying that her character wasn't worthy of nomination, a slap in the face to "Grey's" writers, including Rimes.
She was rumored to have demanded more money and was really more interested in furthering her movie career than in developing Izzie's character.
It seems that Denny is finally out of the picture, but it's possible that we're seeing the beginning of the end of Izzie Stevens.
In last weeks episode, Izzie, convinced she was ailing, duped her interns into running a battery of tests.
Her results indicated anemia, but they are delivered at the same time as a patient who gets a surprise cancer diagnosis. Old-fashioned TV savvy suggests that the test results might have been switched and that Izzie is headed for the Big Pink Slip.
Reportedly, Melissa George, who plays Meredith's resurfaced friend Sadie Harris, said of Rimes, "She's really lovely, until she wants to punish you."

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Thanks For the Memories - Feb 13, 2009
Addison returns to Seattle Grace to save her brother in this 'Private Practice'-'Grey's Anatomy' crossover and reminds us how good things used to be...at the hospital and between her core group of friends
It's official: Addison Montgomery makes ''Grey's Anatomy'' a better show. We can curse this Grey's/Private Practice crossover for forcing us to watch Practice, or we can celebrate the fact that it brought Kate Walsh back to Seattle Grace. I choose B, as I am a glass-half-Addison kind of girl. (Addison half full? Ugh, I want there to be a pun there that just isn't.) Point being, this little promotional stunt (with Addy bringing her dying brother to possibly be saved by Derek) has proven a golden maxim of television: You never know what makes shows great, and messing with any of a great thing's variables is riskier than it looks. Take Addison — a character that transcended her once-secondary status — away from Grey's, and it changes. Put her on a different show with different characters, and she diminishes, too. Upshot: Can we all just stop watching Practice so it fails and Addy can hightail it back north? Thanks.
The revival of our beloved live-but-departed-to-LA character even made that Denny ghost incident feel far in the past — you know, something we lightly joke about and move on. Like, Izzie was making little construction paper props to use in a ''game'' to make the interns excited about medicine again, and Alex asked, ''Is this some kind of dead boyfriend art therapy?'' See, that's funny now. And on the not-funny-because-it's-true side of things, he added, ''The interns are losers.'' Now, this brings up a more serious issue even Addison can't fix. Namely, that this hospital officially sucks. I know we talked about this last week. I know it's been addressed with this ''No. 12'' crisis this season. But I'm starting to think they're damn lucky to get 12. I'm thinking more like 312. I'm thinking this is a place where the interns more than likely mixed up Izzie's test results with those of that dying lady in the clinic last week — not good. It's a place where the interns need scavenger hunts to learn medicine — not as bad as not telling someone they're dying, but not comforting.......cont’d

Addison returns to ‘Grey's’ in crossover - Feb 13, 2009
Brain worms, babies in danger, and mysterious blondes fill the show
Where we left off: McDreamy postponed his proposal to Meredith to help Addison rid her brother, Archer, of a revolting case of brain worms (really!). In other news, Owen “McArmy” Hunt spotted a blonde he clearly recognized, and a nice pregnant lady who’d accidentally run over her husband had a brain aneurysm. (Bad day for her.)

Brain-worm drama: Archer’s situation deteriorated when Derek announced that his many cysts were effectively inoperable. Addison was insistent, however, that Derek “be a God.” So Derek came up with a daring surgical gambit and insulted Archer’s manhood when he resisted. Of course, Archer relented, lest he be thought a wimp. Derek completed the procedure with only one rogue worm he had to — and did — chase down.

Tumor hilarity: Izzie, suffering increasing effects of whatever malady brought on Dead Denny, continued decompensating as she obsessed over preparing silly games for the interns. In a storyline that seemed in poor taste even for this show, music tootled playfully in the background as a principal character that has been around since the pilot crept, it appears, ever closer to the grave. .................cont’d

TV GUIDE

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Before and After" - Feb 13, 2009
n this episode of Grey's Anatomy, Addison returns to Seattle Grace with a medical crisis she's praying Derek can fix, Owen's past comes back to haunt him, and Izzie makes the interns play a game for a "really big prize."

Addison is back this week because her brother has a serious case of neurocystic sarcosis (that's fancy talk for parasites in the brain), and she's hoping Derek can come to his rescue by performing a risky surgery to save him. At first, Derek considers Archer Montgomery's (Grant Show) condition inoperable, but after a pep talk from Addison and a renewed look at the X-rays with Sam (Taye Diggs), Derek changes his mind.

What follows is an intense surgery where Derek attempts to remove all eight of Archer's cysts without rupturing them. The first 7 go smoothly, but as could be predicted, the eighth one bursts and the worm escapes. Suddenly, Archer's future isn't looking so bright as Derek frantically searches to find and remove the worm in one piece. Whether it was Addison's prayers in the chapel or pure luck that did the trick, Derek ably finds that worm and the surgery is a success!

Addison's return this week also uncovered more hidden gems from Derek's past. Who would have guessed that Derek was the guitar-playing, serenading type of guy? Certainly not me, but I'm enjoying the mental image. The idea of Derek performing a song for Addison on their wedding day is pretty endearing, although I have to admit his lyrics could use some work. I guess the question now becomes: Will he pen another melody for Meredith?............cont’d

Grey's Anatomy: Before and After - Posted Feb 13th 2009
(S05E15) "I need you to be a God." - Addison to Derek
The Private Practice/Grey's Anatomy crossover reached its peak this week with a two-hour event. Both episodes were so action packed, thanks to patients Jen and Archer who were part of the two episodes, that this week you not only get a review for the Grey's Anatomy installment but also one for the Private Practice episode.
Before we get down to the crossover action, I want to comment on the Izzie, Sadie, and Owen storylines.
* I know the interns have not showed much skills lately, but I was a bit surprised that the Chief allowed Izzie to have all the interns play her little games. Yes, the games allowed the staff to test and teach interns, but it prevented them from actually treating real patients and helping the doctors out. This is surprising, especially at a time where most doctors are busy either in surgery or watching a surgery. In any case, it was nice to see a happy Izzie, even if her happiness may be partially due to her condition. It also gave George a chance to be on screen for longer than 30 seconds!
* Even if most of us knew that Melissa George, who plays Sadie, was set to leave the show at the end of this episode, I must admit that I was a bit surprise to see her go that way. I always thought that Sadie wasn't too bad of an intern. Yes, she was a bit unorthodox and borderline crazy, but she seemed to know what she was doing until last week, no? I am not sad to see her go however, as I never really connected with the character and could care less what happened to her. It'll be interesting though to see if she did mix up the blood tests last week as some of you speculated. If so, Sadie's actions will have major repercussions in upcoming episodes.
* Looks like I was right about Beth: she and Owen did date. Even more, they were engaged, and he broke things off in a two-liner email! That is almost as bad as being dumped on a post-it note, no? I didn't care much for the storyline, as it didn't change who Owen is to Cristina. I'm sure the two of them will resume their love affair next week.....there’s more

'Grey's Anatomy': Crossover Part 2: Derek is a god - February 12
So after last week's crossover fake-out, this week we get real action on Grey's Anatomy. Addison and Naomi show up at Seattle Grace with an ailing Archer, and Derek's their only hope to save him. But even I have to admit, this one is gnarly.
Worms in the brain: Right from the start, Archer's in a bad way -- there seems to be no way to treat him that doesn't involve his heart failing or his brain literally crawling. Turns out that the one cyst that showed up on the last scan has now become eight -- that's right, eight opportunities for worms to make their way all over the inside of his skull. I wouldn't want to operate if I were Derek either -- there are too many, the risk of rupture is just too great. And then Addison starts to work on Derek with an impassioned plea. It's time for her to let him out of the teeny box she's had him in since the divorce, and make him be something big: a god who can save her brother.
Into all this walks Sam -- hey, everybody, it's Taye Diggs! -- who's actually an old friend of Derek's that Addison basically got custody of in the divorce. Sam's pep talk to Derek gives him an idea about how to get the cysts out of Archer's head, one at a time. Archer balks, but Derek busts out with the fightin' words, calling him a coward (Do you really want to dare someone to go through with incredibly risky brain surgery?), and it's on. And I have to say, it's really cool. The visuals are awesome, and of course Derek is appropriately god-like until the last cyst, which breaks, and he has to chase after the worm inside Archer's skull. This is so much better than the penis fish.

I'm particularly impressed with Derek's cool under pressure. I realize that's what brain surgeons are supposed to be, but talk about keeping your powder dry when everyone else wants to start compressions on the guy because his heart's stopped. For this hour at least -- you have to check out the Private Practice recap for more on the second half -- Archer's fine.....cont’d

Private Practice': Roadtrip! - February 12
Oceanside Wellness gets a nice jolt of Seattle's best drama this week during Part Two of The Crossover Event between Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Like a high school reunion, everyone dances around each other, posturing and checking their own internal checklists, but when asked point-blank by one of Seattle Grace's doctors if she's happy, Addison can't answer.

Not to start off with a non-Private Practice character, but Meredith got to be in the middle of Addison's Welcome Home to Seattle Party as old friends Derek and Addison, Sam, Naomi, and Mark Sloan gathered around Archer's bedside. With Sam's help, Derek was able to figure out a way to get each of the eight wormy cysts out of Archer's brain. But after the successful surgery, Archer starts complaining of blurred vision and pain, but Derek refuses to do another CT. So Addison goes over Derek's head and gets the Chief to do it. There's a moment that everyone thinks Archer is going to die, which makes him come clean to everyone about the ass he's been, but turns out he's misread his own CT. He's going to be fine. He's going to be with Naomi for the time being too.

Addison then scratches Derek's back by helping diagnose a complication suffered by his aneurysm patient. Addison demands the baby be delivered at 24-weeks to save his life, but Derek overrides her by saying Addison should do an in-utero procedure to repair the baby's heart issue. Derek admits that he nicked the aneurysm, leading to the complication. The procedure is at first a success, but goes wrong. We'll find out what happens next week............cont’d

ABC to Renew 'Ugly Betty' for Fourth Season - February 11, 2009
Beside being said to film another season for 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'The Bachelor', ABC are also rumored to give 'Ugly Betty' a renewal treatment for its fourth season.
Despite previous announcement saying that "Ugly Betty" is going on hiatus, ABC reportedly reveal their plan to renew the fourth season of the TV series starring America Ferrera. Spilling the beans to public is Entertainment Weekly, which unfortunately has no further details on how the TV series will get its renewal.

Beside planning to renew the fourth season of "Ugly Betty", ABC have also reportedly approved the filming of another season for "Grey's Anatomy", "Desperate Housewives", "Brothers & Sisters", "Extreme Makeover Home Edition", "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "The Bachelor". However, the net "is not ready to announce any pick-ups at this point," the network's publicist says.

ABC previously announced they will be replacing "Ugly Betty" timeslot with an episode of "Samantha Who?". In the replacement of "Ugly Betty", they also plot to pair "Samantha Who?" with a new TV series "In The Motherhood", which is inspired by real-life everyday moms.

Noting that they still had faith for "Ugly Betty", the spokesperson for ABC promised that the comedy show "will be back in that timeslot." The spokesperson also said, "The hiatus is no way meant to reflect a loss in faith for the show which remains large part of ABC's identity."

For its next episode, "Ugly Betty" will be shot near E 71st St and 5th Ave in New York City. Though exact filming location hasn't been confirmed, rumor says the filming will be near The Frick Collection and Reference Library, which collections include some of the greatest paintings, sculptures, furniture and porcelain by well-known European artists.

Heigl, Knight leaving 'Grey's'? - Feb. 10, 2009, 1:30pm PT
Studio insists nothing's official despite rumor
"Grey's Anatomy" could be saying farewell to cast members Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight - but studio insiders stress that nothing's official.

That's despite an Us Weekly report citing co-star James Pickens Jr., who told the magazine's website that both Heigl and Knight are splitting at the end of the season.

An insider said that none of the show's talent has been informed of any cast changes - and that right now, the only person who knows for sure what's going on is series creator Shonda Rhimes.

The potential departures of Heigl and Knight have been rumored for months, but so far the stars, producers and studio have remained mum on the issue.

An ABC Studios spokesperson would only say that the studio and network are not confirming any changes to the show.

Pickens told US Weekly of the potential changes at an NAACP luncheon.

Katherine Heigl & T.R. Knight: Are they really set to exit 'Grey's Anatomy?' - 03:45 PM PT, Feb 10 2009
Whatever story twists the writers are planning for ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," they couldn't possibly be as dramatic - or at least as suspenseful, in the literal sense of something suspended that never seems actually to fall - as the slow-motion goodbyes of cast members Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight.

This particular bit of off-screen kabuki was heightened with a new report that quotes fellow cast member James Pickens as declaring that Heigl and Knight are as good as gone.

Fans have been wondering about the actors' tenure for months. Heigl, a sometime movie star ("Knocked Up") with a well-documented fondness for saying seemingly unguarded and possibly career-jeopardizing things, dissed the series last year with a grandiose gesture, removing herself from Emmy consideration and saying "the material I was given" failed to warrant award consideration. Knight, who was at the center of an ugly gay-baiting incident involving former costar Isaiah Washington, is reportedly unhappy with what he feels is too-limited screen time.

A couple points, however, are getting lost in the scuffle to squeeze some sort of definitive news from Pickens' remarks. First, it may seem like old-school skepticism but we'll ask anyway: Not that he's necessarily wrong, but how does Pickens know for sure that either one of his costars is leaving? Actors are not always the most reliable sources of dish on upcoming scripts, let alone information about what's happening off the set. For the record, network and studio sources have declined comment on the Heigl/Knight issue, as have PR reps for the two actors.

But that leads the second point: Why should anyone comment and ruin all this great suspense? Now in its fifth season, "Grey's" needs all the help it can get. Back in the day - that would be the 2006-07 season, to be precise, when it averaged a record 19.9 viewers - it was ABC's top-rated scripted show and bona fide sensation.

That all seems like a very, very long time ago. Fans have complained bitterly about this season's storylines - particularly the remergence of "Dead Denny," a deceased former love interest of Heigl's character surgical resident Izzie Stevens - and the show is slogging through its worst-ever ratings, averaging 15.1 million viewers. A current arc of interlocking episodes with the "Grey's" spin-off "Private Practice" seems to be boosting the latter show without doing anything to help the former.
o by keeping the Heigl/Knight drama alive, Pickens may have just been doing what he could to help out the home team.

IZZIE AND GEORGE LEAVING 'GREY'S ANATOMY' - February 10, 2009
Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight are both leaving "Grey's Anatomy," according to co-star James Pickens Jr.
"Yes, she is," Pickens told Us Weekly when asked if Heigl is leaving the ABC hospital drama. "Wherever Katherine goes, I wish her nothing but the best."
Pickens, speaking backstage after last weekend's NAACP Awards lunch in Beverly Hills, expressed similar sentiments regarding Knight.
"He's going too," Pickens said. "He just wanted to pursue other career paths."
Both Heigl and Knight have made no secret about their unhappiness on "Grey's."
The vociferous Heigl, who's complained about storylines in the past, made even fewer friends on the show when she blamed her lack of an Emmy nomination last year on the "Grey's" writers (for not giving her more to work with).
Knight has publicly complained about his lack of screen time and was reportedly threatening to leave the show earlier this season.
Ironically, ABC entertainment chief Stephen McPherson told TV critics last month that he expected Knight to return next season (although he didn't say in what capacity that would be).
