Meredith: [voice over] Any first year med student knows that an increased heart rate is a sign of trouble. A racing heart could indicate anything, from a panic disorder to something much .... much more serious. A heart that flutters or one that skips a beat could be sign of a secret affliction .......... or it could indicate romance, which is the biggest trouble of all.

It seems like we have no control over our own hearts. Conditions can change without warning ... romance can make the heart pound just like panic can. And panic can make it stop cold in your chest. It’s no wonder that doctors spend so much time trying to keep the heart stable, to keep it slow, steady, regular ..... to stop the heart from pounding out of your chest from the dread of something terrible or the anticipation of something else entirely.

SPOILERFIX SPOILAGE

Grey's Anatomy Spoilers

Updated on February 2, 2009

Grey's Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m.

Episodes 5.14: Beat Your Heart Out
Airdate: February 5, 2009

* new 02/02 - We will get our first clue into what's ailing [Izzie] at the end of Thursday's episode. [...] Thursday's ep features one of the funniest, all-female group hugs ever. Also, there's a bawdy cafeteria scene that is so quintessentially Grey's that it reminded me how much I miss the good, ol' show. Oh, and did I mention the girl-on-girl action? 'Cause there is some! [...] This week marks the arrival of Laura Allen as a woman from Owen's past. [...] George is literally on screen for about 10 seconds. [...] By the end of this week's episode, I'm pretty sure everyone in Seattle Grace (patients included) will have seen that damn ring except poor Meredith. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 01/25 - Now that Derek has the engagement ring, he searches for the perfect way to propose to Meredith, as Lexie demands that Mark go public with their relationship, and Bailey, encouraged by her work on recent cases and by Dr. Dixon, considers a new direction for her medical career. Guest starring Jessica Capshaw as Dr. Arizona, Jennifer Westfeldt as Jen, Ben Shenkman as Rob, Peter Mackenzie as Warren, Laura Allen as Beth, Brandon Scott as Intern Ryan, with Melissa George as Sadie and Mary McDonnell as Dr. Dixon. Source: ABC
* 11/26/2008 - Rob: Male, Caucasian, 30's, very likeable and nice guy. Patient in the hospital. 4 episode arc. Lisa Peck: Female, All Ethnicities except Caucasian, 30's, good and loving parent to Kailie. Dan Peck: Male, All Ethnicities except Caucasian, 30's, good and loving parent to Kailie. Kailie Peck: Female, All Ethnicities except Caucasian, 9-11 year old to look and feel 9 years old. Pretty little girl, very sympathetic patient in the hospital. Warren Schook: Male, Caucasian, 50's, regular, upper middle class couple; a good person. Rachel Schook: Female, Caucasian, 50's, regular, upper middle class couple; a good person. Woman: Caucasian, early to mid 30's, sunny, simple and sweet. Must be available for a future episode. Source: SpoilerTV
* 11/11/2008 - They're looking for a famous actress to play a thirtysomething patient for a three-episode guest arc. She's said to be funny, warm, have a sense of humor and be a girl next door type. Source: Kristin on E!Online

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

General Spoilers:

* new 02/02 - [Bailey] receives some potentially career-altering news. [...] Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse [between Cristina and Owen] that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 01/25 - [Denny]'ll be around at least through March, since that's when Izzie's aneurysm-esque medical condition finally gets diagnosed. [...] Sources confirm [that Faye Dunaway] has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/12/2008 - New details are emerging about Jennifer Westfeldt's forthcoming arc as a patient on Grey's Anatomy. Or, I should say, new detail : She's married to Angels in America's Ben Shenkman. [...] He's not dropping by Seattle Grace to keep vigil at his ailing wife's bedside. According to a Grey's insider, he's a patient, too -- and a critical one at that. Like Westfeldt, Shenkman is signed on for multiple episodes. [...] [Eric Stoltz's serial killer character] is there to receive medical attention after he suffers a major beat down in prison. [T.R. Knight, who plays George, is in talks to be released from the show.] Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - Izzie's hallucinations are health-related -- and brain-related. And although the specific name of the ailment is being kept in the safe underneath Rhimes' desk, I'm told it's similar to an aneurysm. And every time it flares up, she sees Denny. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 12/04/2008 - A source close to the show tells me, "The reason [the actor] has not been on is because [he or she] has been a pain in the ass lately, trying to change scenes and dialogue, being hard to work with and putting up an attitude. The higher-ups were getting tired of it, so they tweaked [him or her] out of some episodes. That's why you haven't really seen [him or her] lately." A second source seconds that emotion: "[He or she] is not really getting along too well with producers right now." Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/26/2008 - Jennifer Westfeldt is joining Grey's Anatomy for a multi-episode arc. [... She] is coming on as a patient. [... The crossover will] take place over the course of three episodes (Feb. 5, 12, and 19) and the only confirmed participant as of now is Kate Walsh. [...] Denny will be haunting Izzie at least through February. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/20/2008 - "I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie, and Alex is among the most interesting we've ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can't wait for our viewers to see where we're taking it. But what it won't involve is Izzie having a brain tumor," [Shonda Rhimes revealed... Denny will] be in at least five episodes. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 11/08/2008 - Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps. Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut). Source: TV Guide Online
* 11/06/2008 - A female patient named Natalie wants to leave the hospital because she'll get fired from her job at a bar if she misses any more shifts. As the doctor taking care of her fixes a bandage before she goes, he notices that Natalie has many scars. Natalie also tells the male doctor that she's been flirting with him all day and that he should have reciprocated. Source: SpoilerFix.com [Note: This was set to occur around episode 9. It's unknown if it's been pushed to another episode or dropped.]
* 11/04 /2008- [The show] is now casting "star names only" for a "former military nurse who is maternal." Cristina most definitely has a "Major" romance coming on! Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 11/02/2008 - Jessica Capshaw (The L Word, The Practice) will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who's called in to consult on a case and winds up butting heads with Bailey. I hear that Capshaw has signed on for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more, and that she will make her first appearance midway through the season. Source: LA Times
* 08/28/2008 - [Dr. Addison Montgomery] may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. "I don't know if it's going to work with the story, and we don't want her to come back for a visit if it doesn't feel important, something only Addison can do," says Rhimes. "But the idea is on the table." Source: Entertainment Weekly

SCOOP-AGE & OTHER TRICKSTERS

The Ausiello Files

Special Edition: Ask Ausiello about 'Grey's Anatomy' - Feb 2, 2009,
Question: How and when is Izzie's "condition" on Grey's going to be revealed? -- Sarah
Ausiello: Officially, the dead-guy-sexing resident won't be diagnosed for a few more weeks. Unofficially, however, we will get our first clue into what's ailing her at the end of Thursday's episode. There's another twist, yes, but luckily, it's one only an idiot wouldn't see coming. Here's a hint just for those special folks: Izzie isn't anemic.

Question: Is Dr. Bailey going to take over as the head cardio surgeon? -- Dee
Ausiello: While I can't confirm that, I can confirm that she receives some potentially career-altering news.

Question: Do you have any Grey's scoops? -- Bryan
Ausiello: Thursday's ep features one of the funniest, all-female group hugs ever. Also, there's a bawdy cafeteria scene that is so quintessentially Grey's that it reminded me how much I miss the good, ol' show. Oh, and did I mention the girl-on-girl action? 'Cause there is some!

Question: Anything new on Cristina and Owen? -- Gaby
Ausiello: Lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes will give way to an emotional collapse that is either extremely moving or ridiculously over the top. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Question: Can you help a girl out and give us anything on Cristina and Hunt? -- Erin
Ausiello: This may or may not shed light on the above spoiler, but this week marks the arrival of Laura Allen (Dirt) as a woman from Owen's past.

Question: It's my birthday, so I wondered if I can have some delicious NCIS scoop? -- Chris
Ausiello: Happy birthday, and... no. Sorry, this is a special edition of Ask Ausiello that focuses solely on Grey's Anatomy (see above for more). Check back on Wednesday for the regular non-discriminatory AA. That may have what you're looking for.

Question: My wife made me watch all five seasons of Grey's Anatomy, and I have to say I enjoyed every bit of it. My question is: Do you have an update on T.R. Knight? Is he leaving? -- Dennis
Ausiello: Nothing official's been decided, but I suspect Thursday's ep may have been the straw that broke the underused actor's back: George is literally on screen for about 10 seconds.

Question: Any Mer/Der news you can share? -- Lindsay
Ausiello: By the end of this week's episode, I'm pretty sure everyone in Seattle Grace (patients included) will have seen that damn ring except poor Meredith.

Ask or Watch with Kristen

Karen: Could we have some Owen and Cristina scoop for the upcoming episode of Grey's Anatomy? And not that the ex-fiancée is coming back, because we're all over that, seriously.

Yeah, the ex stirs up a little drama, but Cristina and Owen have the sexiest exchanges in the hospital in Thursday's episode before she shows up. Now, it's not the crazy sex you're dying for, but your heart will melt none the less. In other romance news, Derek gets within an inch of proposing to Meredith, but an urgent phone call from Addison—about, like, Archer's brain tumor—takes precedence and ends that initiative. Priorities, people, priorities!

Kathy in Castle Rock, Colo.: Hi, Kristin! Any scoop on the fate of Izzie? Is she dying? I hope not. I love her on that show!
This week, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) finally gets proactive in figuring out what's wrong with her, using the interns to run every test imaginable without their knowledge. The tests show up clear, but here's the kicker: There may very well have been a mix-up, and Izzie could very well be dying. (Sad clown.) The good news for you Denny haters? Either way, Denny will be gone for good very soon, because Jeffrey Dean Morgan is leaving the show to shoot a new movie with Hilary Swank called Resident. How do we all feel about this? And do you want Heigl to stay? Comment below!

Deirdre: Is Addison going to hook up with McDreamy?
Survey says: No!

Grey's Anatomy: Do Derek and Addison Kiss? - Jan 30, 2009
Dear ABC Promo Dudes,
Could you please stop freaking out the fans of Grey's Anatomy?
Thanks to your latest promo for next week's Grey's and Private Practice crossover—in which it appears that Addison (Kate Walsh) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) are going in for a kiss—we're getting hundreds of emails from panicked MerDer devotees.
"If Addison and Derek kiss, I swear I am never watching Grey's or Private Practice again!" Susan from Omaha writes.
Now, we know that's not true. Like the rest of us, Susan won't be able to keep herself away. Still, if you don't mind, it would be nice if you could trim that apparent smoocharoo out of your promo. (It's about 18 seconds in, and you can see it in the video box below.)
Thank you very much.
(Oh, and P.S.: Thanks for letting us know Charlotte on Lost isn't really dead.)

-----------------------

Dear Grey's Anatomy fans,
Step away from the ledge! I have a sneak peek of the big crossover episode for you, and the definitive answer on whether Derek and Addison really do kiss...

Video here

Despite the smoochy-looking moment in the clip above, a source tells me of Addison and Derek: "No, there's no kiss. They are still just friends. And there is no romance between them in the crossover episode."
Instead, the romance comes from Derek plotting his marriage proposal to Meredith, and Lexie and Sloan going public. See for yourself in the sneak-peek photo gallery below...

I am so sick of waiting for good Cristina/Owen Hunt love. How much longer? -Juliana
There's no sexy time tonight. Hunt's ex -- played by All My Children, The 4400 and Dirt's Laura Allen -- shows up at Seattle Grace towards the end of the episode, but her arrival does actually force Yang and Hunt closer... physically.

Any Grey's scoop? -Gina
Callie's getting some action tonight. In the bathroom at Joe's Bar.

Is McDreamy proposing to Meredith tonight as all the promos suggest? -Dee
Nope.

I'm so sick of this Izzie storyline dragging out. Tell me it'll be over soon. -Jeff
Izzie's condition is life threatening and we're going to get that info right quick. I'm not saying she's being killed off, but the storyline will certainly get a push forward over the next couple weeks.

SIDES & SUMMARIES

More sides for episode 5.14 "Beat Your Heart Out" have been released.

Warren & Rachel Kramer (married couple in their 50's) - They're nervous and shaking while talking to 2 interns in the ER. They see Dr. Thomas walk by and ask if he can help them. Warren says he can't talk to these children (refering to the interns). Dr. Thomas sends the interns away and the Kramers are left with him who is a man their age. The Kramers tell Dr. Thomas that their kids went off to college and they wanted more intimacy so they tried something new they saw in a magazine that Rachel pulls out "20 Techniques to Re-ignite Your Nights!" They tried #9 and Warren got injured down there.

Dr. Thomas is tending to Warren's injury while interns looks on and Warren asks how people have to be there for that. Dr. Thomas explains that it's a teaching hospital and asks Warren if he wants the interns to leave. Warren lets them stay since they've already seen part of the show. Dr. Thomas finishes and Warren thanks him and says never again will he do something to spice things up.

Dr. Smith sits with Rachel and picks up the paperwork/chart and notices the magazine under and asks her if she wants it. Rachel tells hims to keep it because it's caused enough trouble. She asks Dr. Smith if kids like him do that sort of stuff. All she and Warren wanted was to spice things up and now Warren won't look her in the eye. They ruined their marriage with intimacy. Dr. Smith answers that they do some of that stuff. Rachel asks if he does #9 and he says NO.

Carrie (30's and attractive) - Carries is walking down the hall with 2 coffees and sees Patrick standing outside her father's room looking at charts. Carrie goes up to Patrick and says that she thought she had imagined seeing him by the elevator last night because she needed some sleep or the stress of her father made her see him but he's actually there. There's an awkward moment and Patrick asks her how she is. Carrie getting a little upset. She says she's a little confused to see him standing 2 feet in front of her. The last time she heard from him was a few months ago when he emailed her breaking off their engagement with no explanation. She says she's pissed. They talked to each other everyday since they were 17, even when they were miles apart. She's also freaking out because her dad is throwing up blood and she doesn't know what's going on. She's also exhausted because she's been up for 36 hours but mostly, she's incredibly happy to see Patrick. Carrie gets teary eyed and gives Patrick a hug and he tentatively ties to hug her back.

Carrie stands worried by her father David (60's). Dr. Walters comes in and Patrick is also there. David's monitors have started beeping faster because his blood pressure is increasing. Dr. Walters says they need to prep him for surgery because the radiation has caused the scar tissue to be even more infected than they thought. Carrie starts freaking out because she doesn't know what's going on. David apologizes saying he didn't want Carrie to worry because she worries so much these days, all he wants is for her to be happy (he looks over at Patrick). David then tells her he's had cancer for the past 5 years. Carrie sobs and Patrick tries to comfort her.

Dan & Lisa Peck (30's), daughter Stacy (9) - Stacy is in bed. Dr. Williams presents the case (secondary pulmonary hipertension due to a heart defect since birth). Dr. Austin kneels by Stacy's bedside and explains to her that Dr. Williams is explaining to her parents that they are going to take a closer look at the part of her heart that pumps blood. Dr. Austin remarks that she likes Stacy's socks and Stacy explains they are her soccer team's socks and she's the best on the team. Stacy wants to know how soon after Dr. Austin has fixed her heart can she go back to playing soccer. Dr. Austin doesn't have an answer. Dr. Williams tells Dan and Lisa that Dr. Cruse will be performing the exploratory surgery and will be in shortly. Dan asks if Dr. Cruse is a good doctor. Dr. Williams says she's the best and they couldn't ask for better. Dan asks what if they decide they can't operate on Stacy's heart. Dr. Williams answers that they'll insert a shunt which will provide constant IV medication directly into Stacy's heart until she gets a heart transplant. Dan wants to knows how long that will be, if it'll be months. Dr. Williams doesn't know but says it could possibly take months. Lisa and Dan get extremely upset because Stacy may have to spend months in that bed.

Dr. Austin enters Stacy's room. Stacy's pale, her chest hurts and she's having difficulty breathing. The monitors are going crazy. Dan and Lisa rush in. Dr. Austin performs a pericardiocentesis.

Dr. Austin and Dr. Williams enter to find Dan and Lisa standing next to Stacy. Dr. Williams says this new medical backpack will help Stacy with her heart defect but she didn't mention it before because there's a higher risk of complication as opposed to the older method. Lisa reasons by saying there's a higher percentage of risk on the monkey bars too. Kids fall and break bones but they can't keep Stacy off them. Dan tells Dr. Williams they know their little girl and if she's tied to a bed she'll just get sicker. If the backpack allows her to be a kid, they'll take the risk. Lisa and Dan look hopeful for the first time.

Young Man- Clinic has a handful of patients being treated by Dr. Walters and interns. Dr. Walters helps correct an intern who's messing up the stitches in the Young Man's arm. Dr. Walters tells the intern he's going to have to start over. The Young Man says Dr. Walters has to be kidding. Dr. Walters says sorry and the intern starts again.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Kramers are in their 50's and Dr. Thomas is about their age which sounds like it'll be Richard. Patrick is one of the male docs and the only one who fits is Hunt. Pretty cold to break an engagement by email. It'll be interesting to see his ex-fiance around.

SNEAK PEEKS

Ten Crossover Sneak Peek's! - February 05, 2009
Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) is going to propose marriage to Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) on Grey's Anatomy. But there is one question besides the big question, and that's when will it happen? The mystery of Derek's plan is the focus of Thursday's big-deal Grey's Anatomy episode, which launches the Private Practice crossover and brings romance to, well, everyone. It's a very positive episode for the love affairs between Owen and Cristina, Lexie and Mark, Izzie and Alex, Mer and Der and heck, even for Callie, who is aggressively single at the moment. Want a taste of the good times? Check out the sneaks below!

There’s nothing left so take the rest,
Yeah you’re draining me.
I set it alight it burns so bright,
Stab it out, stab it out.

Baby, you make my heart beat faster.

Let alone…..

EP RECAP

02/05/2009 - "Beat Your Heart Out"
Season 5, Episode 514
Now that Izzie realizes that she's ill, she tries testing herself at the clinic, but doesn't get far before her interns arrive. When she has to show Sadie the right way to take blood from a patient, she demonstrates the technique on herself, then tells Sadie to run both tests. Under the guise of training, Izzie has Sadie run more tests on her. Sadie's only discovery: Izzie is anemic.

Derek is ready to propose to Meredith, but wants to wait until the right moment, because, as he tells Mark, "she spooks easily." Mark advises Derek to wait, Cristina tells him to keep it simple, while the Chief advises Derek to go all out. Derek is surprised when Meredith mentions how cute their kids will be, so he takes it as a sign he should go ahead and propose.

Miranda or Dr. Dixon Miranda asks Richard not to put her on another case of a dying kid. She's shocked but happy when he tells her he wants to promote her from a resident to an attending.

Cristina prepares a couple whose daughter needs heart surgery for dealing with the very odd Dr. Dixon. Miranda translates Dr. Dixon's technical terminology into lay terms, but worries about bonding with another child who might not make it. When the girl needs immediate surgery, Miranda asks Dr. Robbins to scrub in instead. Robbins tells her the girl will be fine, and so will Miranda. But during surgery, they discover that the girl's heart is irreparable and she'll need a transplant. Dr. Dixon turns to Miranda to help talk the parents through it, but she's gone to spend time with her son in the nursery.

Dr. Dixon tells the parents that the girl will need medicine every three minutes and won't be able to leave the hospital, but Miranda arrives with a backpack that can deliver the medicine, meaning the girl can go about her daily life. The ecstatic parents hug Dr. Dixon, who immediately freaks out. The only way she can calm down is if someone -- which ends up being Miranda and Cristina -- holds her tight.

Miranda confides to Dr. Robbins that after her son's health scare last year, she doesn't want to live through anything similar, but Dr. Robbins believes Miranda's devotion to children makes her "uniquely qualified" to be a pediatric surgeon.

Meredith asks Cristina to pre-read her mother's ninth journal, the one where Ellis detailed her affair with Richard. "Yeah, you'll go blind reading that," says Cristina and takes on the task. She tells Meredith the diary is all about "longing looks," so far, the kind that Cristina is currently having with Owen. Until, that is, a woman arrives who causes Owen to panic and run. Cristina follows him and delivers the same kind of huge hug she just gave Dr. Dixon.

Meredith finds Cristina in an on-call room, with Owen fast asleep. "He's planning to propose," she tells Meredith, but she's talking about Richard in the diary, not Derek

Lexie pours out her feelings for Mark to Callie, who doesn't want to hear it. "Alone people don't like to hear about together people. It's sort of like bringing a six-pack to an AA meeting," Callie tells her.

When Meredith asks Lexie what's going on with her and Mark, since she's been working with him for a week, she lies and says she's thinking about specializing in plastics.

Mark is convinced he needs to break up with Lexie, especially now that Derek is proposing to Meredith. Lexie gives Mark an ultimatum: She needs to be able to tell Meredith and Derek about their relationship, and if he won't, "Then, I can't do this."

Derek's odd behavior after her baby comment makes Meredith think he doesn't want to have children with her. "My babies will have Alzheimer's and suicidal tendencies and split ends," she tells Cristina. Lexie, Cristina, and a patient who are all in on the secret tell her not to worry.

"You have been acting like a basket case," Meredith tells Derek as he prepares to leave the hospital for the day, "If you don't want babies or you don't want babies with my crappy DNA, just say so." "Meredith, I want your crappy babies, all of them," he tells her, but insists he has to go.

With Mark's help, Derek has decorated their bedroom with dozens of roses, candles and teddy bears, but after he gets a call, thinks better of it. The only evidence of his romantic gesture: A single rose Meredith finds under her pillow.

Lexie goes to Joe's and finds an emotional Callie sitting at the bar. When she asks her if she's okay, Callie shakes her head and runs into the bathroom.

Dr. Robbins follows her and tells her that she knows what's going on with her since people at the hospital talk, but she assures her that plenty of people will be waiting in line for Callie as soon as she's ready to date again. "You want to give me some names?" Callie laughs, and Dr. Robbins kisses her. "I think you'll know," she says.

At the hospital, Justin wordlessly comforts Izzie after she shows him a medical file.

Bill Harper On "Beat Your Heart Out"...

Original Airdate: 2-5-09

Hi. First of all, if Grey’s Anatomy just ended -- stop! Go back, sit down, and watch Private Practice! I know, you’re probably doing it anyway, but seriously -- it’s going to get SO GOOD and if you miss tonight’s Private, you’ll feel like you’ve missed out. GO! Come back here when it’s over!

Hi. So, Valentine’s Day is almost here. Every year, my wife and I do the same thing -- or a version of the same thing. She’s not a fan of Valentine’s Day, she doesn’t care for the hype. “It’s needless pressure, it’s invented by the greeting card companies; a gift or gesture on any random day would be more meaningful...” So every year we agree not to do anything. Just ignore it. Honestly, I love this about her. My wife is smart and sensible and pragmatic and these are qualities I love and depend on, because I have none of them. And it certainly takes the pressure off. But I’m just not wired that way. I can’t not do something. And it’s often just cheesy flowers or chocolates, sometimes it’s something more elaborate, but I end up doing something. Even though I promise I won’t. And this upsets her. Because she did nothing. Like we agreed! And now she’s the one who got something and did nothing, even though nothing was what was the only appropriate thing to do. In short: every year for Valentine’s Day, I make my wife feel a little crappy. Romance!

So I felt especially close to Derek as he spends the day trying to plan the perfect proposal. (Can we just take a second here to say DEREK’S GOING TO PROPOSE. Who would have thought that a drunken tussle on Ellis’s living room rug would lead to this? Not Meredith, I bet.) And while Derek’s twisting himself inside out to keep this surprise for Meredith, trying to find exactly the right way to do it, all of his efforts are actually backfiring, sending the wrong signals and sending her into a panic.

Romance and Panic Attacks. As this episode began taking shape in the writer’s room, it became clear that these two main factors that would be at work. Either people were experiencing one or the other, or one was leading directly to the other. Romance and Panic Attacks. Which go together, I thought at the time, like peanut butter and clams.

Start with Cristina and Owen, who have maybe the most romantic day I’ve ever seen. Shonda was very interested in the hotness of the chasteness between these two. We had lots of discussions of the tortured sensuality of the Victorian Era, where a hand placed next to another’s hand could be so electric, so concentrated, that it was actually better than sex. To go further, to consummate that kind of compressed excitement, would be to risk losing it. And I loved that in Seattle Grace, where people famously steal into on-call rooms between surgeries, these two were living a bodice-ripping romance novel under everyone’s noses. Cristina doesn’t even have words for what this is. So they choose to long for each other for a while. And it’s painful, but in that way that you sort of don’t want it to stop. It’s clear they’re both loving it.

Meanwhile, Mark and Lexie, at the height of their own romance, start to crumble under all the secrecy. Poor Lexie’s collapsing under the weight of trying to keep her relationship with Mark from Mer and Der, and then lying to Jen about her husband’s surgery, to keep Jen from going hyper-hypertensive. She’s killing herself trying to protect everyone. Even at lunch she almost outs herself as a penis-breaker. I love Mark and Lexie, I have to say. I admit, I was not so sure at first about this pair, but I think I had the same misgivings Mark did. I like most what Lexie is forcing Mark to learn about himself. And when he finally tries, in Derek and Meredith’s bedroom (he really tries!) to come clean to Derek, it’s not just to clear the air, or apologize or confess as much as to share with his best friend this great thing they’ve both found. Cause it’s the real thing. When he can’t -- it’s horrible timing -- his disappointment is so clear.

And then Callie, who’s looking down the barrel of her failed relationships learns that even when he chooses to be OK by herself, it’s just lonely. And at the moment she feels it hit rock bottom... Enter Arizona “actions-speak-louder-than-words-especially-in-the-ladies-room” Robbins. I love characters who sneak up on us. What I think I love most about Arizona is that she is genuinely, positively interested in people, in the most selfless way. We knew this right away, when she made Alex squirm on the plane a few weeks back, with all the questions about his girlfriend. So it seems perfectly natural that she would just stop in the loo to cheerlead a colleague. Then....surprise! Romance! And she turns Callie’s whole set of expectations upside down. Which I’m all for. I want Callie to be happy. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

And amidst all this romance, all these panic attacks: Jen, whose concern for her husband is actually endangering her and her baby’s lives. Owen’s past catching up with him, just at the wrong moment. And Dr. Dixon, who suffers a perfect storm of social anxiety: too much touching, talking and unexpected information at once, causing her to lose control of herself. But knowing what she needs to cope. (The treatment she demands from Bailey and Cristina was inspired by the amazing work of Temple Grandin, whose work with livestock led her to amazing insights on how to ease anxiety in people with Autism and Asperger’s. If you ever feel like being inspired by astonishing humanity and creativity, just Google her name). Finally, Izzie, spending all day trying to make sense of Denny’s parting message, and clearly expecting the worst. Only to be left at the end of the day with a clean bill of health. And Alex.

It was Izzie’s sense of dread that made me realize something about Romance and Panic. They seemed at first like an odd combination, until I realized they are remarkably similar experiences. They share a lot of the same symptoms: rapid hearbeat, breathlessness, sleeplessness, obsessive thoughts, etc. But more to the point, I think they have the same root cause: Expectation. Romance puts us in a state of anticipation that is as good as (sometimes better than) the actual fulfillment. Look at Owen and Cristina. And anxiety, panic -- Dixon’s, Bailey’s, Izzie’s -- comes from anticipating the worst outcome -- one that might not ever even occur. They’re the same kind of scary. Sort of like falling: when we dream we’re falling, we call it a nightmare. But we also call it “falling” in love. Because we have absolutely no control over the outcome.

Happy Valentine’s Day, by the way.

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.14 "Beat Your Heart Out" Recap -February 05, 2009
Grey's Anatomy opens tonight with some establishing shots of early morning Seattle. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is practicing medicine on herself in the clinic, and you know that wacky hijinx are going to ensue because the music is all happy and peppy, instead of OMG-I'm-Going-Crazy crazy. In come her troupe of interns, who have been at Seattle Grace long enough to resent having to be assigned to clinic duty (flu shots and enemas) with Izzie instead of cutting people open. Izzie dramatically draws the curtain open, startling the interns in mid-grumble, and glares at the lot of them. Meanwhile, Cristina (Sandra Oh) opens the door to an on-call room and wakes up Major McHottie (Kevin McKidd), who was napping shirtless. They make awkward, but they share a moment when he shows that he notices little things about her. He suggests that she wear her hair up because he likes seeing the back of her neck. After he leaves the room, she rubs the back of her neck with a smile on her face.
Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is having a hard time keeping her new relationship with Mark a secret. Callie (Sara Ramirez), who has a smashing new haircut with bangs, is the only other person who knows (except for Sadie), so Lexie tries to talk about how much she likes Mark to her, but Callie shuts her down immediate with: "Alone people don't want to hear about the together people, OK? Even if the alone people are alone by choice. It's sort of mean. It's sort of like bringing a six-pack to an AA meeting." ........there’s more

Grey's Anatomy' Spoilers - February 03, 2009
There wasn't a new episode of Grey's Anatomy last week so its fans had a couple of weeks to wait until the storylines get moving forward yet again (yes, right after they picked up pace during the last few episodes). To fill in that gap, Entertainment Weekly, courtesy of Michael Ausiello, reports that a lot will happen on Seattle Grace, things that will remind old Grey's fans of the good old times and resolve this similarly old blasted Denny storyline once and for all.
Getting it out of the way, EW says that Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) will, finally, get the blinding flash of the obvious. Denny (guest star Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was dropping hints like crazy, and we will get our first clues as to what Izzie is inflicted with exactly, other than perpetual and at times annoying perkiness.

As for those Grey's fans who were reminiscing of the good old days courtesy of the apartment scene on the eve of McMommy's arrival, Thursday's episode will supposedly feature “one of the funniest, all-female group hugs yet” plus a not-so-pleasant (but still hilarious) cafeteria scene and some girl-on-girl action. There were reports before that Arizona Robbins (guest star Jessica Capshaw) will potentially be a new love interest for Callie (Sara Ramirez). Capshaw is on Seattle Grace for just three episodes, but the girl was on The L Word so she must have some experience on the field.

Meanwhile, some of my fears are starting to come true, if Ausiello is to believed. There will be “lots of cheesy, slow-mo, piano-scored interludes” between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd), complicated by the fact that a woman from Owen's past will come a-knocking.

Finally, some news that won't sink well with the already edgy George (T.R. Knight) fans. George will reportedly be on screen for a grand total of – 10 seconds

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Beat Your Heart Out - Feb 5, 2009
..............................................................
Derek is still trying to figure out a way to propose to Meredith. He’s scared to come on too strong and spook Meredith, but he also wants it to be special, so he asks or advice and gets lots of it – although much of it is conflicting. Cristina thinks he shouldn’t make a big deal out of it, the Chief thinks he should make a huge deal out of it. Meredith make mention that their kids will be cute, which Derek finds encouraging, but he also continuously ends conversations on his proposal plans when she shows up, which makes her think that he’s freaking out and doesn’t want her kids with her damaged Alzheimers-prone DNA.

Derek seems to take The Chief’s advice and enlists Sloane to help him spread rose petals, hearts, and teddy bears all over the bedroom in anticipation. Just after Sloane leaves, Derek’s phone rings. It’s Addison, which kicks off the crossover with “Private Practice”. See this week’s “Private Practice” recap for the other side of that phone call.

When Meredith gets home, Derek is gone and the room is immaculate once again, except for a rose petal under the pillow. Expect this to have ramifications next week.

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Rules of Engagement - Feb 6, 2009
From Derek's prep to propose to Hunt's seduction of Cristina to Mark and Lexie's maybe-relationship, Seattle Grace is all about taking things to the next level
So we're Denny-free now, which is progress...though we've still got some dead weight bouncing around Seattle Grace, not to mention some hit-and-miss story lines. Here, the good and bad of this week's Grey's Anatomy:

Good: Derek's impending proposal Sure, it was a little out of character for Meredith to offhandedly remark, after observing a couple who'd just checked in (the lovely Jennifer Westfeldt as a pregnant woman and the husband she'd just accidentally run over) that they'd have cute babies. ''Not as cute as ours, but...cute.'' But it's nice to see Mer progress, and I do think it's cool that she and Derek play the role reversal — he wants to settle down, she's scared — so well. And the bit where all the boys were talking about how he was going to propose, and then they had to play it off like they were talking work (''Not if you don't want a...hematoma!'' followed by a bellow of laughter) — pretty cute, really. Meredith subsequently freaked out because she could tell he'd been acting weird since the baby comment, and she wondered if perhaps he just didn't want to have babies with her: ''My babies will have Alzheimer's and suicidal tendencies and split ends.'' Of course, that wasn't the case — but you've gotta give Mer credit for self-awareness, at least.

LA TIMES

“Grey’s Anatomy”: Rules of engagement - Feb 6 2009
Love was definitely in the air on last night’s entertaining (and fully Denny-free!) “Grey’s Anatomy.”
With a diamond ring burning a hole in his pocket, Derek tried to figure out exactly when and how he would propose to Meredith. The question of if no longer seemed relevant once Meredith quipped how cute their kids would be. If the girl could bring up babies without breaking a sweat, he figured, surely she wouldn’t bolt if he brought up marriage.

Naturally, word of Derek’s intentions spread quickly throughout the halls of Seattle Grace and, naturally, everybody had advice for the poor guy. Don’t make the question-popping a big, romantic McDreamy thing, Cristina insisted. Absolutely do make the grand gesture, countered a giddy Chief, and the grander the better: Flowers, candles, exotic foods, live musicians and even a rowboat should all be utilized, and skywriting should not be counted out. Even Derek and Meredith’s pregnant patient (Jennifer Westfeldt) -- who'd gotten engaged in a supermarket aisle, right between the cat food and the tampons -- weighed in: The proposal would be perfect, no matter where or how it took place, as long as it was the right person doing the asking. Hard to argue with that logic, I guess, even if it did come from a woman who’d just (accidentally) run her husband over with their car.

Derek’s hushed conversations and general sudden weirdness keyed Meredith in to the fact that something was up. She suspected it was the kid thing. Maybe, she mused to her no-longer-estranged BFF Cristina, he was freaked because he didn’t want kids with her -- with her DNA, her kids could have Alzheimer’s and suicidal tendencies and (surely, worst of all) split ends. So she walked right up and asked him if that was the case. This new grown-up Meredith? Love her. And clearly, so does her would-be fiance, 'cause he said he wants each and every one of her "crappy babies."........there’s more

McDreamy's proposal interrupted by his ex - Feb 5, 2009
Sorry, Meredith — ‘Private Practice’ crossover will have to come first - Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd was all set to propose to Meredith Grey on "Grey's Anatomy," but fate, in the form of his ex-wife, intervened.
Think of the children: Bailey got good news when the Chief said he was recommending her for a position as an attending in general surgery. She was less happy to learn that Dixon wanted her help with another very sick child — one she could barely face after almost having to murder a serial killer to save her last pediatric patient. Bailey ultimately came through, but Dixon brought her down by opining that Bailey is clearly cut out for the position she fears most: a pediatric surgeon.

The fellowship of the ring: Derek told practically everyone except Meredith that he was planning on proposing to her. He told Mark, the Chief, Lexie — he even told a pregnant patient who had to be treated for high blood pressure after accidentally running over her husband with the car. (Bygones!) Pregnant Wife advised him to hurry up and propose to Meredith, then learned that she herself had a dangerous brain aneurysm. But at least before she got any worse, she got to play the essential role of the Seattle Grace patient: to advance the personal life of her doctor.

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Beat Your Heart Out" - Feb 6, 2009
The secrets at Seattle Grace are quickly mounting in this episode of Grey's Anatomy. Izzie secretly puts the interns to work on uncovering her health issues, Lexie's bursting at the seams to let everyone know about her and Mark, and Derek can't quite seem to keep a lid on the engagement chatter.

For starters, it looks like Meredith and Cristina are back to being best buds again. In fact, Cristina is back to reading her version of Harry Potter books: Mer's mom's diary. Among the new facts Cristina has managed to uncover is one juicy tidbit that indicated the Chief was planning on popping the question to Mer's mom. That just might explain why the Chief had so many grand suggestions for Derek on how to propose to Meredith.

Almost blowing Derek's secret is a pregnant patient by the name of Jen (Jennifer Westfeldt, who bares a striking resemblance to Lisa Kudrow), who accidentally ran her husband (Ben Shenkman) over with a truck. As it turns out, Jen's husband isn't the only one in need of medical attention when the mom-to-be suffers a seizure and doctors discover she has a brain aneurysm.

In other patient news, Warren (Peter MacKenzie) and his wife end up at Seattle Grace after a sexual experiment goes awry. I'm still not sure what he had stuck in his tushy tonight, but whatever the doctors removed sure did create a loud clang in the pan. Having said that, I'm now more intrigued than ever to know what suggestion No. 9 was in that magazine article!

One thing I was keeping track of tonight was how long it took for O'Malley to surface. For those of you not watching the clock, it was exactly 30 minutes. It's really a shame they haven't managed to do more for T.R. Knight's character, and I will certainly be sad to see him go if he does end up leaving this season............there’s more

Can Sloan save her ailing love life? Can Derek Save her brother? All will be revealed in this week’s GG/PP crossover.

Patrick Dempsey is goin’ fishing. Not with worms, but for worms. Life-threatening wrigglers are squirming around in the brain of GA’s neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd’s latest patient, Archer Montgomery (Grant Show), and only Derek can save him.. But wait just a minute: Who is this guy with the grotesque medical mystery?

Archer is the elder sibling of Derek’s ex, Addison Montgomery (PP’s Kate Walsh), and his ailment is at the center of a two-part story that will air Febrauary 12 in back-to-back episodes of GA and PP.

In the first hour, Addison travels from Santa Monica, California, the home of her Practice, to enlist Derek’s services. Returning to Seattle Grace, where she once worked, totally stresses her out. In the observation theater above the OR, Addison and her former flame Mark Sloan watch Derek tackle the dangerous procedure while his love, Meredith Grey, assists.

“Apparently, this actually happens,” Pompeo notes after rehearsal. “You can ingest the4se parasitic worms in uncooked food, so now I’m afraid to eat sushi.”

Dempsey, meanwhile, roams the set, making wisecracks and slapping members of the crew on their backs. His twin sons are in “their terrible two” so he’s not getting all the shut-eye he’d like, but he stays upbeat. Settling into position at the operating table, he makes a few suggestive in-and-out moves with a surgical probe, a wicked smile on his face. “And, action!” the director shouts. “It’s a great day for saving lives, people,” Derek announces, with all the seriousness of an acclaimed surgeon.

The crossover may also be a great way of saving PP, a spin-off created by Shonda Rhimes that has not achieved the almost instant success and pop-cultural import of GA. Cast with Broadway and film stars like Audra McDonald and Taye Diggs, as well as such recognizable TV faces as Walsh, Amy Brenneman, Tim Daly and, most recently Show, PP started out strong but was hobbled by the writers’ strike and has fought to build its audience back. Since its move to Thursday nights after GA, ratings have improved; recent episodes have attracted nearly nine million viewers.
Now, this worms-in-the-brain story brings Addison and her neurologist/author brother, who’s anything but a monogamist, back to Seattle. One of his conquests, Addison’s friend Naomi, has come to Seattle to lend support. “And I want that booty call to continue,” McDonald says. Her on-screen ex, Sam, tags along to look after his former wife. “But I get a vibe going with Bailey,” Diggs reveals. “Sam finds her interesting and I think the same can be said for her.”

“We are making a full two-hour extravaganza, so these characters are goin to get to know each other,” say Chandra Wilson, who plays Bailey. “Although Miranda Bailey is a very married woman, and working hard aon the happily part, she’s not dead. She can look, that’s what I’m saying!”
The idea of characters crossing over from one show to another certainly isn’t new (GS, for instance, appeared on the original Beverly Hill 90210 and its spin-off Melrose Place), but this time there’s a twist: All four visitors from PP were med school chums of Derek and Sloan.
“I get the feeling that, just like Meredith takes stray interns into her house, in the past Mark, Derek, Addison, Naomi and Sam were all once under one roof, with only tequila bottles in the kitchen cabinet, “Dane says. But don’t expect old sparks to fly between Addison and Sloan. “I’m with Lexie now,” Dane says, referring to CL’s character. “Even though she broke my penis.” “It was traumatic,” Dane says of the story line that wound up with Seattle Grace’s newest arrival, Iraq War surgeon Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), surgically fixing the problem. “Shepherd just laughted,” Dane adds. “I can’t wait til Sloan tells Shepherd how it happened and who did it. Lexie is quite a woman.”
So much so, it seems that Sloan, the biggest hound ever to roam the halls of Seattle Grace, may finally end up as somebody’s lapdog. “Up until now, he’s not been a one-woman guy, and he is smitten,” Dane observes. “He has recognized something in her that’s completely disarming.”
As far as Addison is concerned, it looks like she and Sloan are in the just-friends zone, he says. “There are a few moments where I check in and have a heart-to-heart with her and then I blurt out the news that Derek is planning on proposing to Meredith.”
Though recent Grey’s episodes have explored Derek’s decision to pop the question to Meredith, that news is bittersweet for Addison. She’s hit a romantic dry spell on PP after her SWAT-team boyfriend walked out. “It’s all been a trail of tears,” Walsh sighs melodramatically. “And now I go to Seattle and keep playing catch-up with people, like in ‘The Big Chill’, and discovering that everybody has love in their lives except Addison. It’s a little melancholy.”

Photo: After a simple surgery goes wrong, Derek “questions his ability and starts going into a dark abyss of insecurity,” says Dempsey, with Walsh, in the halls of SGH

Photo: “I wonder if this is going to give Naomi a complex if she makes men’s heads explode in all the wrong ways,” says McDonald, who serenades Derek with Dane and Diggs.

Walsh – who’s been coping with her own split from her husband of less than two years, Alex – doesn’t seem worried about her character’s romantic prospects. “ Addison is living next door to Sam, who Hottie McHotovitch form Hot Town, and there’s always Pete. That party is going to have to get started at some point.”
In the meantime, however, there is the big crisis case. “There’s the drama of surgery and then all these personal conversations come up,” Walsh says. “A lot of stuff from Addison and Derek’s past is revealed and I get involved in a surgery and try to help Derek, who is having a lot of professional anxiety.”
For a least one actor, this crossover has been pretty smooth sailing. “My whole job consists of me lying in bed,” Show says with a grin. “Mostly my eyes aren’t even open. I fell asleep the other day in the middle of a scene and started snoring,”
The actor’s first appearance on PP was memorable: Addison walked in to find him naked on her kitchen floor with a girl he met on the beach. “He is a self-loathing human being with a whole lot of sexual addiction,” Show says. “ I think I’ve slept with more women on PP in five or six episodes than [I did on] Melrose Place.”
Show is having a field day. “Once I got the role, I started to read up on neurological disorders because I’m a f---- ing dork,” he confesses. He loves playing the bad guy. “You can be nice one minute and a bastard the next. The good guy never get worms in his brain. That’s gross, like pooping you pants. The bad guy can poop his pants all he wants.”
A BEAUTIFUL FLOW CHART IS INCLUDED ON THIS PAGE

Dane puts it more simply: “I don’t think anyone is a fan of Archer. He’s a pr***.” Although the characters may have words, the cast is having fun filming two shows at once. In one scene, Diggs and McDonald, who are accomplished Broadway belters, along with Walsh and Dane, who can also carry a tune, serenade Dr. Shepherd at Joe’s Emerald City Bar. It’s a celebratory moment, as it looks like Derek has saved Archer’s life. Yet, as is often the case on Grey’s, the triumph is followed by tragedy.
Fortunately there is some light at the end of the tunnel: setting a date for the Shepherd/Grey wedding. “The question is how to pop the question,” Dempsey says, “I don’t now the answer to that, but I assume that by the end of the season, I’m going to put a ring on it,” he adds, referencing Beyonce’s recent hit. “Then bang, Season 6, marry her and start having kids already.”
It sounds like a plan – one that could also give birth to another special crossover episode: To repay Derek for saving her brother’s life, maybe Addison will revisit Seattle Grace to deliver Mer and Der’s baby? We’d tune in. Seriously.

The Love Is Just Beginning – Shonda Rhimes reveals the romance ahead for her Grey’s and Practice docs.

The last time I wrote for you, dear TV Guide reader, was last summer. We talked about how Mer and Der finally had their happily ever after, and how we were going to see the realities of the fairy tale. We talked about how Izzie would have a love story unlike anything we’re seen at Seattle Grace; how Cristina would meet a hot, mysterious military guy; and how Mark would play cupid for Callie and find love of his own. The thing I stressed the most is the love. And the love for many of our doctors is just beginning.
The love is also what brings so many of our Oceanside Wellness docs to Seattle. Addison’s brother, Archer, has a medical problem that calls for the best neurosurgeon in the country: Derek. What I love most about these crossover episodes is revealing how connected the two world’s are. Mark Sloan, Addison, Derek, Archer, Naomi and Sam were friends during their med-school days, and in seeing these old friends reunite in a time of crisis, we learn a lot about their pasts. We also get to see what might be my favourite pairing of characters ever – Sam Bennett and Miranda Bailey.
It has been a treat to watch Kate Walsh, Audra McDonald, Taye Diggs and Grant Show working with Chandra Wilson, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane and the rest of the Grey’s cast. And after the crossover, there is a lot of story left to tell this season for both shows.

Private Practice:
Addison is going to have a new romance, and as a result, new personal conflicts. She is steering the practice through financial troubles, tackling medical cases with no easy solutions, but her dating life has been through ups and downs. And it’s going to get juicy. Violet is pregnant – and it’s unclear who the father is. Charlotte and Cooper are heading into uncharted territory when Charlotte has trouble at work and Cooper is too focused on caring for Violet. In relationships, Sam learns that you can’t go home again. As Pete spends more time with Violet, he discovers who and what is worth fighting for. And Naomi shocks us all by questioning her future at the very practice she cofounded.

Grey’s Anatomy:
I know you have a lot of questions. In the weeks to come, we find out what is medically wrong with Izzie, and how Alex, George and her other friends will not only stand by her, but fight for her. Mark loves Lexie, and Lexie loves Mark, and they are as surprised about that as we are. Callie deserves some happiness. But the road for her is never easy, and so both her personal and professional lives are going to take some interesting turns and one big detour I like to call Arizona. Cristina and Owen’s love story is full of pain but also humor and hope. Like me, Cristina has fallen for Owen, hard. But he’s a man back from war, who admits he has big problems leaving his old life in the past. And those problems are going to get bigger for both of them.

Derek and Meredith:
Derek’s always been the strong one, the whole and healed one. Not anymore. He’s questioning his surgical abilities, and it’s the first time we’ve seen that. Meredith’s the strong one now. Before, she might have run, but now she’s sticking. She’s grown. And she’s there for him. And don’t forget the engagement ring his mother gave him. Yes, there will be a wedding – a beautiful, joyous wedding that will surprise you. Remember that I didn’t say whose wedding it will be….

TV SQUAD

Grey's Anatomy: Beat Your Heart Out - Feb 6th 2009
(S05E14) "Use it wisely." - Owen to Mark about.... well... you know!

Fun fact: The day following the airing of "Stairway to Heaven," the top Google searches where for expressions like "penile fracture" and "broken penis." Thankfully, after getting treatment and not using his tool for a few days, Mark is back in shape! I must admit seeing Owen and Mark quickly enter and exit the exam room to check on it was probably the most hilarious scene of the week. Yes, in my book it was funnier than those scenes with the man who had something (why couldn't they tell us what in the end?!?) lodged in his behind. It wouldn't surprise me if people research that latter case on Google today to find answers as to what was lodged where it didn't belong!

Some of you may say that the funniest scene of the week was when Cristina was ordered to hug Dixon. I must admit I laughed out loud for a second or two while watching Cristina realize that she had no choice but the scene as a whole was not funny. Dixon was in distress and needed to be calmed down. The hugging also seemed to help Bailey a bit. When it was near the end of the hugging fest, Bailey actually looked peaceful rather than tired of hugging as Cristina was. With the emotional roller coaster Bailey was going through this week, she herself definitely needed some hugging to calm her down......... cont’d

TV /It Happened Last Night - The crossover begins...- Feb 5, 2009
Take an imminent proposal, a doctor who's denying he wants to be in the relationship he's in, another doctor who may care too much, someone who's trying but scared to death to figure out what's wrong with her, and some romantic tension that's chaste but hot, add some celibate confusion and a few secrets, and what do you get? Tonight's Grey's Anatomy.
There's a lot of running around and yapping this week, and quite a funny bit involving the men of Seattle Grace and Derek's plans for Meredith, and I'll get to all of that in a minute. For me, this week was Dr. Bailey's turn to star. We learn that after almost losing Jackson, she took three days off -- the only time she's ever taken off besides maternity leave. We learn that as soon as she finishes her residency the Chief wants to promote her to be an attending in general surgery (and about time she got that kind of formal recognition). Bailey's thrilled, and assures him that she'll be fine as long as she doesn't have to deal with any dying kid cases.
Which of course jinxes it for her. Dr. Dixon (Mary McDonnell) is back, and Bailey and Cristina are working with her on the case of 9-year-old Stacy Pollack, who suffers from secondary pulmonary hypertension. As Dixon explains her surgery to the parents, Bailey steps in and explains in English to the kid what will be happening. ............ cont’d

'Eli Stone' Actress Gets 'Mad' at NBC - Feb 6, 2009
Loretta Devine joins David E. Kelley pilot
Loretta Devine could be starring in a legal drama next fall -- just not the one she starred in this fall.
Devine, who's coming off "Eli Stone" at ABC, has joined the cast of David E. Kelley's pilot "Legally Mad" at NBC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her casting continues a long relationship she's had with Kelley; she was a regular on "Boston Public" and made guest appearances on "Ally McBeal," "Boston Legal" and "Picket Fences."
"Legally Mad" is about a young lawyer (British actress Charity Wakefield) who spurns bigger offers to join the band of eccentrics at her father's (Hugh Bonneville) firm. Devine will play one of them, an attorney who's seemingly always on the brink of a breakdown.
The cast also includes Kristin Chenoweth and Jon Seda.
Devine is the first "Eli Stone" regular to take another TV job following the show's demise. ABC still has a handful of unaired episodes in its pocket but hasn't said if or when they will air.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan In For The Resident - 30 January 2009
Jeffrey Dean Morgan did say he wanted to play dirty after his stint as aaah-so-cuddly Denny Duquette in Grey's Anatomy, and boy, has his agent delivered, with Morgan signed on to play another sociopath in Hammer Films' psych-thriller The Resident, to follow his turn as The Comedian in You-Know-What.
Morgan will play the seemingly charming Brooklyn landlord of Hilary Swank's doctor. But before you can say 'Pacific Heights', his character turns out to be a bit crackers, subjecting the young doctor to a terrifying game of cat and mouse.
The Resident reunites Swank and Morgan after grievous 2007 rom-com turkey P.S. I Love You, and the results should be more auspicious this time out, with Morgan bringing some of that Comedian misanthropy and Swank back on more familiar territory.
Filming is due to start in May, with ex-music video director Antti J. Jokinen making his feature debut behind the camera.

ABC greenlights three pilots Jan 27, 2009
Including one from 'Grey's Anatomy's' Shonda Rhimes
BC on Tuesday greenlighted three drama pilots from ABC Studios, including one exec produced by "Grey's Anatomy" creator/exec producer Shonda Rhimes.
That project, "Inside the Box," was joined on the pilot roster by "I, Claudia" and an untitled project based on the Argentinian drama "Brothers & Detectives."
"Inside the Box," written by Richard E. Robbins, is set in a Washington network news bureau and centers on an ambitious female news producer and her colleagues.
Robbins is exec producing with Rhimes and Betsy Beers.
Rhimes had been interested in the world of journalism as a setting for a show. She developed a project about a group of female journalists, which was picked up to pilot in 2006 but was ultimately shelved when Rhimes got busy with "Grey's" and its spinoff, "Private Practice."
Despite its throwback-to-ancient-Rome name, "I, Claudia" is a contemporary drama from writer John Scott Shepherd. The project centers on Claudia McIntire, a young prosecuting attorney who doesn't know that one day she is going to be a serious contender for the presidency of the U.S.
Shepherd ("The Days") penned the script for the pilot, which he is exec producing with Matt Gross.

ABC already put a woman in the Oval Office with Rod Lurie's 2005 drama "Commander in Chief," which starred Geena Davis as the first female U.S. president.
The untitled "Brothers & Detectives" adaptation, written and exec produced by Daniel Cerone, is about a low-level detective who, after the death of his estranged father, discovers he has a brilliant 11-year-old brother who is adept at helping him solve crimes.
