Meredith: [voice over] My mother used to say this about residency. It takes a year to learn how to cut, it takes a lifetime to learn not to. Of all of the tools on the surgical tray sound judgement it the trickiest one to master. And without it we’re all just toddlers running around with ten blades.

We’re human. We make mistakes. We mis-estimate, we call it wrong. But when a surgeon makes a bad judgement call it’s not as simple. People get hurt, they bleed. So we struggle over every stitch, we agonize ... over every suture. Because the snap judgements, the ones that come to us quickly and easily without hesitation, they’re the ones that haunt us forever.

Casting News - Melissa George - Monday, January 12, 2009
As I taught you long ago, the Golden Globes aren't so much a showcase for award-worthy talent and polarizing fashion as they are a hotbed for exclusive prattle. To wit, shortly after Sunday's kudosfest ended, Melissa George presented me with a doozy of a scoop: She's leaving Grey's Anatomy, STAT.

"It was my choice," the actress-slash-Golden Globe nominee (for In Treatment) confirmed to me at HBO's red-hot after-party, held poolside at the Beverly Hilton. "My last day of work is Tuesday."

But lest you think this is yet another in a long line of rocky Grey's exits (see also: Isaiah Washington, Brooke Smith, possibly T.R. Knight), George, who joined the ABC soap last November as Mer's maybe-gay BFF, is leaving on the best of terms................cont’d

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ exclusive: Faye Dunaway scrubbing in – Jan 11, 2008
Someone's been hiding out at Seattle Grace all these years, and trust me when I say you are never going to believe who it is.
Mommie Dearest -- Faye Dunaway!
Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Oscar winner (for Network), who hasn't taken a small-screen gig since a 2006 episode of CSI, has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen.

Doctors Without Borders
It’s going to be double the drama on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice’s upcoming crossover episodes. Practice ups the ante beginning February 5 as Addison’s brother Archer (Grant Show), ailing with a brain disorder, returns to the Oceanside Wellness clinic. Then on February 12, two hours of strong medicine and stronger emotions play out when Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs) accompany Archer and Addison (Kate Walsh ) to Seattle Grace. Nothing far-fetched here: Sam, Naomi and Addison went to college with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dan) — and it’ll be up to neurosurgeon Derek to correct whatever’s wrong with Archer’s brain. The storyline continues through February 19. Expects some laughs, too, when Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) learns from the alums about a hidden talent her fiancé possessed during his years as a student. I’m told it’s something you’s see at a bad talent show. Please tell me its yodeling.

Gary - Scene 1

INT. ER – MORNING

Dr. Smith’s with Chuck Ruben, 40's, short, businessman, in a wheelchair and in severe pain, but trying to hide it. With him, is his taller, worried brother, Gary.

Dr. Smith: I’m Dr. Smith. What’s the problem?

Chuck: (clenched teeth) I am short.

Gary: Chuck.

Chuck: And I have a little infection from a little surgery I had --

Gary: In HONG KONG. My crazy ass brother went and got crazy ass elective surgery in HONG KONG. Who does that?

Chuck: SHORT PEOPLE. DESPERATE SHORT PEOPLE. I got my legs lengthened. I couldn’t find a surgeon who would do it here.

Gary: You couldn’t find a doctor in the entire COUNTRY OF AMERICA who thought it was a good idea. Think maybe that should’ve told you something? (to Dr. Smith) It’s barbaric. They broke his legs, they hooked him up to some deieval torture device --

Dr. Smith: Yeah, its’s a very controversial procedure. (to Chuck) You must be in a great deal of pain, sir. Can I take a look?

As Dr. Smith gently lifts Chuck’s pant legs to REVEAL ......

Chuck: Hey, no pain, no gain, right?

A TORTUROUS LOOKING METAL DEVICE pulling apart his leg bones through HUGE, INFECTED, GAPING HOLES in his legs. We can see down to raw baone. Gary and Dr. Smith look horrified.

Gary - Scene 2

INT. HOSPITAL – CHUCK’S POST - OP ROOM – DAY

Dr. Smith’s checks Chuck’s post-op stats. Gary’s there, by his side. Chuck’s just waking up.

Dr. Smith: How are you feeling, Mr. Ruben?

Chuck: My legs hurt ..... how’d it go?

Dr. Smith: Very well. You only lost abut a quarter inch of bone.

Gary: That’s great! Only a quarter inch, no big deal, right?

Chuck glares at Gary. Glares at all of them.

Chuck: I’m under 5'3" now. I am 5'2" AND THREE QUARTERS. But maybe I can just squeeze over the height requirement at the amusement park. No big deal.

Gary’s had enough, throws up his hands in frustration.

Gary: Okay, you know what? Yeah. You’re short. You’re a little, little man. Get over it.

Chuck: It’s ruined my life.

Gary: It’s ruined your.... you know why I never played varsity basketball?

Chuck: You didn’t make the team.

Gary: I didn’t try out for the team. I didn’t want to make you feel bad for being too short to play.

Chuck: Well..... that’s stupid.

Gary: Even now, if I have a bad day? I can’t ell my own brother about it because maybe you had a bad day AND YOU’RE SHORT! Can’t complain about my crappy job because you hate your job AND YOU’RE SHORT! I couldn’t even be depressed about Lori leaving me because you don’t have a girlfriend AND YOU’RE SHORT! And by the way, the reason you don’t have a girlfriend isn’t because you’re short, it’s because ALL YOU DO IS TALK ABOUT BEING SHORT!!!

Chuck and Dr. Smith stare at Gary, stunned by the level of bitterness.

Chuck: I’m losing my hair too.

Gary: No one knows how short your are except for you, dude. No one cares.

Beat. Chuck finally looks up at his bother, realizing.

Chuck: I’m an ass, aren’t I?

Gary: Yeah. And you’re short.

Off the two brother, being able to smile about ti for the first time.....

Dr. Tomson: I will be done when I’m done, gentlemen ... And the liver’s good. Dr. Smith hold this medical.

Preview of 'Grey's Anatomy' 5.12: Sympathy for the Devil - January 09, 2009
In the next "Grey's Anatomy" episode, "Sympathy for the Devil", Seattle Grace Hospital will open up for a death row inmate named William (guest star Eric Stoltz) who creates a rift among Meredith, Derek and Christina. While Meredith thinks that the patient is still "human" after all, Derek puts his prejudice for the man who has taken others' lives when he decides to donate his organ to Bailey and Arizona's young patient.

Speaking about how much his character will affect the situation at the hospital, Stoltz spoke to TV Guide, "When someone on death row is brought to a hospital, doctors are confronted with their own ethical code. 'Is it right to save the life of someone who has done so much bad in the world?' 'What is a doctor's job and how should one respond to this situation?' It presents a lot of interesting, rich things for all these talented actors to play with." He added that he will create quite a stir in MerDer's relationship.

Meanwhile, Derek's Mother Carolyn comes in town and makes a surprise visit to the hospital to meet Meredith for the first time. Also, Mark tries to conceal his relationship with Lexie from her as well while Owen and Cristina try to go on their first date.........2 previews

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS ~ EPISODE PLAYLIST

Song Title

Rolling Stones - "Sympathy For The Devil"

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
Ive been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a generals rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the Kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
What's me name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah

PODCAST

Podcast —5.12 Sympathy with the Devil January 16, 2009

Hello all and Happy New Year Grey’s fans. After a break for the holiday executive producer Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers are back with a recap of the first two episodes of 2009 and a some tantalizing hints at what’s to come in the next episode “Stairway to Heaven” airing Thursday, January 22.

Hi, this is Shonda. And this is Betsy and this is Grey’s Anatomy. Happy winter! Over here it’s certainly, certainly warm here. I hear there is lots and lots of snow everyplace else and very, very cold everywhere else and you have my sympathies but here its about 85 degrees. It is. It was a really, really whoppingly terrifying cold 50 for a while and it pretty much tested all the limits of survival out here. Yeah, cause we don’t really know how to handle that. Now, I grew up you know in suburbs of Chicago so I should really be more comfortable with the cold and the snow but I don’t know what’s happened. I grew up on Long Island and I should be too but that doesn’t change the fact apparently my blood got thin. Anyway, I say embrace the snow enjoy the snow. I say make snow angels and oh snowmen. There you go. There you go.

Seattle Grace is in quite a state I would say, given the fact that we have the arrival I would say a special VIP patient who’s unlike any VIP patient we’ve ever had in the history of Seattle Grace. I am very excited about our patient. I think it’s an incredible thing and we should talk a little bit about the processes about getting Eric Stolz. Yeah, you may have noticed that Eric Stolz directed a couple of episodes for us. We always loved him as an actor but we really knew him here as a director.
Yeah, he was directing an episode and I marched over to the stage and said how do you feel about playing a serial killer. And since he was in the middle of directing I think he thought I was either crazy or trying to find a way fire him in a weird way. That would be a weird way. And he basically ignored me and then Betsy and I started to stalk him and hunt him down and show up weird places like the editing room and tell him how tell him he should play a serial killer which is a little bit insulting but there is nothing serial killer-like about Eric Stolz. He’s very, very lovely. And in fact that he was very unlike a serial killer that made him interesting. And we wanted to find somebody who was inherently sympathetic and also kind of sexy. And a little bit cute. And just for the record if you want Eric Stolz to do something, Cry. Yes. That’s what I’ve found that puppy dog eyes work really, really well. And I found that could actually start to cry it actually helped. It did. We did good cop bad cop. I was bad cop, you were good cop, then we swapped and so I think overall it was a great thing that we got him even though we manipulated him to a place of no return, we basically tortured the man and threatened him.

But I think it paid off immensely because he’s amazing as William Dunn, absolutely mesmerizing and there’s a moment in last weeks episode where you understand what he did. I love that moment which is so great because I love this guy, he’s so funny, he’s witty, he’s so impressive and the reactions between Meredith and Cristina, who by the way are still fighting. Cristina and Meredith, where Cristina it’s a little bit like “see”, and Meredith is stunned, Meredith is just absolutely stunned. He’s so casual and nonchalant about it and yet he’s really sexy in this really odd way. There was a lot of debate in the writer’s room about that. I mean when we talked about what he did everyone wanted it like he accidently killed a bunch of people. No. Or he you know he killed his wife and her lover. And I was like no, he should be a real bad ... we should not have a question about whether he’s a bad man who has done very bad things. I think that was important to me to have a patient in the hospital who no matter what, no matter how charming and how lovely is basically irredeemable.

Absolutely and also that’s the only way that Derek’s position can be solid because Derek needs to taking the position that this man is below sympathy, he is somehow or another, he’s somebody who should not be sympathized with because of things he has done to other people. And then we learn from Derek why he feels that way which certainly establishes that, his dad was shot by two guys for his watch, which I also loved. It’s nice to reveal new stuff about our characters even after all this time, to give you snippets and details that tells you a little bit of who they are. And also tells me so much that he’s never revealed it. Yeah, the fact that he’s never revealed it means a lot and I feel that you know that he had a father who had died and you know he has five sisters and this mom but you don’t know anything else how about sort of why his dad died or what happened to him and it really interesting to reveal that kind of thing. Absolutely, and that when he dances it out with Meredith, he’s kinda dancing it out for himself too, just a little bit. And by the way, how cute was he. Here’s the thing, he was so willing to go there he danced for hours. And was really funny every the time and was really willing to look goofy and actually in real life is a very good dancer so I think it was not an easy thing to make himself look as goofy as he did but he was so game to do it was charming. He’s done like, he did that movie where he danced and stuff, right? The man has skills, he does have skills so he kind of hid his skills but come on that was really cute. Charmingly. That was hot. That was very sweet. And I also thought, what a good guy, what a good guy to do this for his girlfriend. Right? I think? I think absolutely that’s where the bond between the two of them weirdly enough right now because the relationship with Cristina is so suffering, which is how Izzie’s sort of stepping in a very unique way.

That is one of my things we have done, which is that we had Izzie take over because Derek’s mom is coming and try and turn Meredith basically into Izzie. The alarming high ponytail one of our most favorite things ever and Ellen Pompeo popping around with an alarming high ponytail and pink top on was hilarious because she really did look like and she did little pop star moves on set and sort of bounced around sort of kept saying “I should have her own video” because it was hilarious. The scene dark twisty Meredith in pink and a ponytail. And there’s always something really funny about her dealing with William Dunn the serial killer with a poppy pink ponytail. Yes, which I love. I mean the contrast between that ridiculous hairdo and Dunn and his dilemma is fantastic. And I love the scene where Meredith tells him all the details about ... it’s true ... in the state of Washington you have a choice of how you are executed, you can either executed by hanging or executed by lethal injection which we were shocked to find out they still hang people but apparently they have executed 6 people in the past I’d in the last 10 or 15 years in Washington, 3 of them chose hanging. Chose hanging? Chose hanging, if you don’t choose they do lethal injection and so I thought it was just an amazing scene (we got that detail) to have Meredith talk about the difference between dying by hanging and lethal injection so clinically and so dispassionately it was just amazing. Yeah, I think that was absolutely incredible.

And I think this whole introduction of this little boy, yeah, and his dilemma Jackson Prescott and this man and how in this framework they’re connected whether they like it or not. The ultimate innocence and the ultimate in corruption. Yeah, I love how horrific it was.

Because Bailey you know, what I love is that for Bailey this is her real first foray into peds, in a way that we’re doing it for peds surgeons and everything, she’s lost the original guy she’s been working with, she feels so strongly about this family. To have that converge kind of in a way with that you don’t expect with Meredith’s story was lovely. We had been planning this for a long time and really loved the idea you have a child who is, where William Dunn is definitely bad you have a child who as pure as Jackson Prescott is all good. And how horrific is the idea that somebody this good could die and somebody this bad could live, albeit for a few days, and his organs could be wasted was heartbreaking. And in addition when you think about last weeks episode and the idea that Bailey in essence, when we meet Arizona who is a fabulous character, when Arizona essentially almost kind of accuses her of medical neglect in that the other option was to get the kid on the transplant list. The double weight of the fact that there’s this extra load of shoulda, coulda, woulda, for Bailey that she has to now make up, which is “I hope I was doing the best thing for this kid” and their her favorite patients.

And I love Arizona, I love the arrogance of any surgeon who coming into a case and being sort of young and brash and saying things basically “Older doctors like to do this but really you should have done this” and then wheelying away on her little skates. Which is hysterical. We loved! You know those details came from actual peds surgeons. Some of them wear those little wheels on their shoes little bears on their coats and it’s not to seem cute part of it is to bond with the kids but also..... you’ll notice she has a bear on one side of her lab coat and a giraffe on the other side and it’s for doing medical exams. You tell a little kid “Look at the bear, look at the giraffe” and that’s how you do your neuro exams. It’s not about just being cutesy. Good, cause if that was a style choice I think I’d definitely question her. She is definitely cooler outside of her scrubs. And I think eventually, hopefully, we’ll see her outside of her scrubs. Exactly. If you play your cards right which is good.

We should mention my favorite thing ever that we got and I feel like the biggest coup in the world was that we got Miss Tyne Daly to come in to play Derek’s mom. And literally like I’d been stomping around saying that Tyne Daly’s was Derek’ mom for years now. She did! I’ve been like “Tyne Daly’s Derek’s mom!” and Tyne Daly, you know doesn’t live in L.A. and it was hard to get her here. She was perfectly willing to do it but it was a thing to bring in Tyne Daly to do this role. And she was incredible. We were lucky too because she just finished doing a play, she got a incredibly busy schedule she’s always doing theater, she’s always working and our timing actually happened seemed to work out well . Literally she flew all night, stepped off the plane, came here came to set and did that first scene. The first scene she shot was the one with Lexie where she holds her face and says “Are you a good girl”. She literally stepped out of her car, stepped onto set, grabbed Lexie’s face and said “Are you a good girl”. I just wanted to burst into applause cause it was perfect. She’s exactly who you want to be Derek’s mom. And she’s exactly who you’ve pictured all these years. And you know that woman raised that man. Like she raises good men.

(I mean look at her brother....PP plug...So its sort of nice to know that we have a big ole Daly love fest)

But it was great to have her and I felt like the moments that she played with Patrick, you know that moments between the mom and Derek were, that was extraordinarily beautiful at the end. Like that sort of bond that he has with his mother
tells you so much about why he’s so good with women and why he can be such an open loving guy. It was great to see. And why he’s such a good man, yeah because when you finally saw the mother and its funny after all these years you’ve sort of waited and wondered. You’ve heard about her and McSteamy talked about the fact you know it was the surrogate home and we knew that from Addison but to actually see this amazingly strong intense woman who use to be a nurse who is the salt of the earth who really raised everyone around her. And the reason I made her a military nurse was I really wanted her to have a background that was strong woman, medical background. You know, tough as nails, had to be tough as nails at your job and yet is the exact opposite of Ellis Grey. The exact emotional opposite of Ellis Grey and that was interesting to me. Like warm where Ellis was cold and yet had basically for all intents and purposes a similar background. Absolutely, I love ????

The other thing we should talk about is Cristina and Owen. Cristina and Owen go out on a date, or at least try to. It doesn’t quite go as planned. We talked about this a lot in the writers room as well. We really had some great battles about this, you know whether or not it was okay for Owen to show up for a date drunk. And I was “It’s absolutely not okay” and that what makes it interesting but then he comes and shows up drunk and he’s ... he’s holding flowers. I mean he’s wearing a beautiful suit and he’s holding flowers and you can tell he was going to make to make it. He was going to try and then Derek’s mom asked him how he’s sleeping at night and that’s what really sends him off to have a few drinks before he goes on a date. A little liquid courage that doesn’t work out at all and then there’s that amazing scene where he climbs in Cristina’s shower and tells her what his best surgery and his worst was which is heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking. Like he could show up for the record, he could show up drunk on a date for me, just putting that out there. Ladies, it’s never okay to go out on a date with a drunk man. This is where a little bit like listening to ‘said the smart person and stupid person’. It’s like goofus and galus (?) To single women. And I’m saying “Boy come on, he brought flowers”. And Kevin McKidd was awesome because A: we had exactly one gorgeous Armani suit. One. Which he put on and then they turned on the shower, and I’m not kidding, he stood there for about 6 hours and doing that scene. Over and over and over again, never complained once and like then they turned around and they on Cristina’s coverage and he still stood in the shower soaking wet and did it again. Like he was incredible. He’s an amazing sport. It was just a powerful, powerful lovely scene and I love Cristina’s face when she steps in the shower with him and then you know it such a different relationship than she had with Burke. It’s very much, he’s a man who really needs to be taken care of. And he is a wounded animal. And Burke was always so healthy and whole and healed and Cristina was the one got to run scared from that, in a weird way it made it safe for her to run scared and now she can’t possibly be the one who runs. No, and the competitive angle with Burke, because there was always a little bit of as soon as she started doing all of his surgeries for him or helping him, there was always this underlying aspect of competition with Burke because they were so much the same way. Well she wanted to be Burke as opposed to you, this is very different, don’t want to be Owen but you want to love him. Oh you sure do, you sure do. Shower, nice suit, whole thing. Yeah, it’s true. It’s a shame that there’s no Owens out there just knocking on my door. There maybe some Owens out there. But there aren’t right now. That’s true. Maybe they’re in motion. Maybe they’re coming! Big ole flock of Owens. There you go, hurry up.

You know the other thing from last week I’d like to talk a little bit about is the Chief. Yes! Because that’s honestly personally one of my favorite things is when the leader gives up. (Laughter) It’s one of my favorite things too. And I think certainly that something that we’ve experienced. Yeah, I think one of the wonderful things that was for me you know we work extraordinarily hard and sometimes you just want to go lay down and close your door and say “You know what, I’m not coming out, I’m just not coming out, I’m not present, I’m not here I’m done” and I could definitely relate but I also felt what he was also saying was so true to the Chief which was the thing that he’s failed is the thing that he’s worked his entire life for and he’s laying in his OR which was sad and Derek comes into talk to him and there’s that moment when he says he supposed to give me a rousing get me on the horse speech. And Derek says “I’ve got to stitch up a serial killer, I got nothing in me” and you know that these two men are.... I mean I love their bond ... but their both in so much pain which is just lovely and then Bailey shows up at the end with that little adorable break in her voice about the kid not being able to make it and the Chief realizes he’s got to get up off that table because no matter what, he’s still the Chief. And you know what, when Bailey comes in earlier and she’s complaining about Arizona and the Chief says “You know what, you’re no different than anybody, you’ve just got to go out and do it”, what I love about that is that he’s given up, he’s taken the day off but he’s still the Chief. Yep, oh yeah. But he can’t stop doing his job even when he’s not doing his job which is he kind of slaps her and says, “Get on the horse lady”. Yeah and then he ends up taking his own advice which is wonderful. Sometimes you just need a couple hours off, that’s what I think. Yeah, you do. You just need a little bit of a refresher which is sort of what he got by lying in the OR and feeling sorry for himself for a little while. Exactly.

Denny and Izzie. Let’s talk about them because there are a couple of things that I thought was lovely which is I love that she spends this episode, you know last episode she said “I don’t know if I can choose between the two of you, you both make me happy” and this episode what she’s really realizing is through watching Meredith with the mom and Cristina and helping Cristina through her date with Owen is the difference between Alex and Denny which is, you know, Denny’s dead. I don’t know if you all knew that but Denny’s dead, he’s pretty darn dead. Definitely, definitely dead. And there are all these things that she’s never, never gonna be able to experience with him and for me I feel like it’s not as innocent as that, like I just want my boyfriend to be alive. I know we all wish our boyfriends be alive, it’s not that as much, to me as underneath it all for Izzie there’s something bubbling for her that stronger that just I’m dating a dead guy, this is alive guy which she know’s there is something inherently wrong with this. She know there’s something wrong with the fact that she spends the majority of her time with someone who is not alive and I love that she sort of can’t get enough of Alex and she doesn’t know what she’s gonna do about it and I love the last moment when you know she says .... Denny says “are you breaking up with me” and she says, “I think so”. I love that. And where it’s headed you will be very surprised to see in the next episode. Absolutely. Things are coming to a head.

By the way, things are definitely coming to a head, it must be really troubling to be seeing a ghost for a really long period of time, seeing you ex-boyfriend, dead boyfriend. Yeah, she’s clearly been in denial about it for quite some time because she’s been enjoying herself. I would say there is a very, very great deal of denial but the weird thing is Alex and her growing feelings for Alex are pushing her into the reality which she can’t keep denying, which is really, really important. And I’m saying, you know if a super cute boy showed up in my house and he might be dead or something I might go with it cause he’s super cute. And he’s Denny. I might go with it for a while before I stopping and going what’s wrong with this picture. Okay, I think my vote would have been the drunk guy with the flowers, your vote is maybe the dead guy. Uh huh, super cute dead guy. See we both go different ways. And plus he has perfect scruff even though he’s not alive. And by the way what about that. Dead guys don’t grow scruff I’m pretty sure. If you want them to grow scruff I think they will grow scruff, I kind of think that’s the way it might work. And Alex is I’m sorry, he turning into... he baked her a cake.... to me he’s turning into probably the most amazing man in the history of America. I just want to remind everyone, always love Alex, loved Alex when he gave Izzie a cupcake.... loved Alex when he made her a cake. Just for the record. What I love about him is more than anybody else is that we’re watching him turn into this amazing man, we’ve watched this journey happen. He wasn’t just .... you know Derek is McDreamy and has fairly been dreamy ... Alex we’re watching sort of become the man we want him to be and that’s been a really interesting journey to watch and go on and it will be interesting to see how he fares in the face of Izzie and her dead guy. Love the fact that you know he basically says “you’re going through something” and then he kind of you know kind of ignores it but I don’t know how much longer he’s gonna be able to ignore it. But he she is being understanding about it isn’t he? He’s a good guy, and you know what, his last girlfriend a little bit more crazy even. Yeah. So his probably some crazy threshold relatively high. His mom had bad patches. He knows how to handle the crazy. He does and she’s at least functioning and doing pretty well and kept her sense of humor which is really, really key in those situations. Overall don’t you?

Next week, ahhh next week something happens to Mark that could predict, could ever expect. No, it’s unique and it’s and medically accurate and we want to tell you ahead of time its medically accurate because I know you are gonna be watching and TV and you’re gonna say “those two said it was medically accurate, it’s impossible that this is medically accurate” but it is. We do medically accurate. People talked about the fecal transplant that we did, totally medically accurate. We read several journals on it, talked to several doctors about it. We’re shocked and appalled, it took us several years for us to write the story because we couldn’t believe it was medically accurate, totally medically accurate, happens a lot. More than you think, you might find yourself having one one day, so there. You know that , that’s just so horrible I can’t even wrap my brain around it, essentially I’m just gonna jump in here and say “don’t worry too much about the fecal transplant, don’t worry too much” just keep eating food and exercising regularly and having a good life. Just don’t abuse antibiotics. Yeah, don’t take the antibiotics unless you absolutely have to because those super viruses are big.

The other thing that happens in next weeks episode which I think is important when we last left lovely William Dunn he was smashing his head against the back of his bed in the place where his head where his skull had been left open. Because Meredith very helpfully told him that was the place. Yeah I think that might have some consequences, ya think, maybe? I think something might happen about that. I think that might actually come to a head. (Laughter) It might go somewhere, somewhere very interesting. Because for us this is a 3 episode arc story which we’ve been working on with Jackson and with William and the Meredith and Cristina fight that we feel very strongly about and there’s something amazing about , first of all it was very startling to me when I saw the first episode in which Meredith and Cristina weren’t talking. I’ve harped on this too exactly. They’re such good friends and they’re so bonded and there’s something startling to have that moment when they’re walking down the hall together altogether and they’re silent and you realize oh my god, they’re still not speaking. Yep. And to watch where it goes and it gets to a point where Meredith say the little mean comment of “you know some of us have natural talent and some of us have practice” which is Cristina’s thing and really hurts her feelings to watch where we’re headed. People do things when they’re arguing they would not ever do when .... and it comes out of the pain of not having that person with you. So Meredith’s striking out, Cristina’s striking out, they’re both being fairly nasty and I think that where it goes is so lovely cause honestly the two of them are a pair. And I really find it hard to watch them apart so you’re gonna get to see what happens with that which is gonna be really interesting and expressive. The thing that comes out of it when two best friends are fighting is because you don’t have your normal resources you do go to others which means relationships start to expand as well. Well I don’t think Meredith might not form such a bond with William Dunn if Cristina and her were talking. You know the bond she forms with William Dunn in the second episode probably wouldn’t happen the way it does if Cristina and her were talking. And I’m not so sure Cristina would be so open to the relationship with Owen if she was still depending on Meredith. If she could have had Meredith to call up and “can you believe this guy got drunk got in my shower” that might have turned out very differently but because it doesn’t happen it’s really interesting. So I think there certainly more meat on that bone for the next episode. To gnaw on .... exactly.

We are gonna watch cause it’s a three episode arc and we’re not kidding you about that. It’s a bunch of things which will be coming to fruition next week which are great to watch. Izzie and Denny and what happens with William Dunn and Jackson Prescott and Bailey. Bailey’s our arc over these three episodes is amazing for us, we haven’t seen her face anything like this as a doctor I don’t think ever and it’s really interesting to watch her deal with it and where she goes with it and that little boy who honestly is the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen. And Samantha Mattison is his mom and the whole ‘Make a Wish Thing’, and it heads in a beautiful direction which I really, really love. And next week I’ll tell you a story after you’ve seen the episode, I can’t tell it to you now. Next week I’ll tell you a story.

EP RECAP

01/15/2009 - "Sympathy for the Devil"
Season 5, Episode 512
Dr. Robbins is not sympathetic when Miranda pages her at 2:30 in the morning because Jackson, the boy who needs a liver transplant, should be moved up on the transplant list because his blood pressure has dropped. "He's running out of time," she tells Dr. Robbins, who replies, "They're always running out of time. Welcome to peds."

Miranda takes issue with Sadie when she promises Jackson's mom that he has a good chance of finding a donor. Miranda tells Sadie that she doesn't trust her, and that if she wants to stay on the case, she'll have to raise her hand and wait to be told to speak. "You're joking," Sadie says, and Miranda coldly responds, "Do I look like I'm joking?

Derek is summoned to the hospital for death row inmate William, whose brain is swelling. But William, who's due to be executed in five days, refuses the surgery. Derek, however, says he doesn't want to help William "cheat the system," and will rush him into surgery as soon as he loses consciousness.

After spending the night with Lexie, Mark is forced to hide in the closet as Meredith's roommates are all over the house, in prepration for a visit from Derek's mother, Carolyn. Mark finally manages to sneak out at 4 a.m.

Meredith, meanwhile, is a nervous wreck about meeting Derek's mother. "Mothers don't love me," she proclaims. "Mothers like bright and happy and bubbly." "You'll be fine," Izzie advises her. "Just don't mention your evil mother. Or your drunky father. Or your weird secret sister."

Izzie and Alex watch as Meredith awkwardly meets Carolyn. Under Izzie's advice, Meredith has put her hair up into a high ponytail that everyone else says looks ridiculous. Over lunch, when Carolyn asks about her father, Meredith excuses herself saying, "I should really go check on the serial killer."

William and Jackson cross paths in the hallway. When Jackson tells William he needs a new liver and a new intestine, William asks, "You want mine?"

"Let me save a life before I go," William tells Meredith, but protocol won't permit it.

Dr. Robbins finally has enough with Miranda second-guessing her every decision on Jackson, and blows her top at Miranda. Fortunately, Alex arrives to announce a donor has been found. Meredith tells William about Jackson's donor and William still wants to know if he was a match. "Yes, you were," she tells him.

Mark's plans to keep his relationship with Lexie secret are thwarted when she insists on eating lunch with him, but then the other interns join them and he makes his escape. He runs into Carolyn, who tells him, "You have that same guilty look you had on your face when you were 10 years old." Mark confesses that he's sleeping with Meredith's little sister, so Derek's mom quizzes her on her sexual history, wanting to know if she's a "good girl." Carolyn later tells Mark that Lexie's not the problem, he is, and that he doesn't set very high standards for his own behavior.

Instead of apologizing for continuing to see Lexie, Mark urges Callie to pursue her crush, Sadie, but Callie says she's scared of getting burned again.

Despite being told to stay quiet, Sadie speaks out during Jackson's surgery when she's the only to notice a spot on the donated organ. Miranda realizes, to her dismay, that the organs are dead and can't be used.

Meanwhile, William is crashing, but he begs Meredith not to let him die "strapped down to a table like an animal." Derek needs another doctor's signature to okay the surgery, but she freezes. Cristina signs it instead, so Derek asks her to scrub in. William comes to after surgery and tells Derek, that they're exactly alike as they both choose when -- or whether -- someone else dies. Derek insists they're nothing alike, and repeats that he's not going to let William die in the hospital.

Alone in the break room, Cristina finally talks to Meredith: "That ponytail looks ridiculous," she says, so Meredith takes it out. When Carolyn wants to know where Derek is, Meredith confides that the ponytail and the smiles were all fake and that she's really "dark and cloudy," and the type of girl that feels bad for serial killers.

Izzie tells Denny that she's tired of the secrecy of carrying on a relationship with a dead man. "I want you alive," she says. "Are you breaking up with me, Izzie Stevens?" he asks and she says she is. After Dr. Robbins advises Alex not to get hung up on the bad cases and to make plans, he asks Izzie if she'll go visit his mother with him.

Owen asks Cristina out on a date, but he shows up late and drunk. She orders him to take a shower, but she doesn't mean hers! He steps in with all his clothes on and tells her the details of his first, incredibly traumatic case during the war. Cristina listens, then gets into the shower with him.

Derek's mother tells him she's no longer angry about his father's death. She notes that that he sees things in black and white, but that Meredith doesn't. "You need a spoonful of that," she tells him, adding, "She's the one."

Meredith learns that Jackson still needs organs, so she tells William that his skull is very vulnerable post-surgery, and that if he damages it, it'll lead to brain death. He asks whether she's doing this for him or Jackson and she answers, "Whatever helps you sleep at night." After she leaves, he takes a deep breath and begins banging the back of his head against his bed frame.

Grey Matter

Jenna Bans on "Sympathy for the Devil"...

I will admit it. I have what you would call a doctor fetish, a sort of hero worship if you will. I trust them implicitly and wholeheartedly, if they say I need antibiotics, I do not question their judgment. When they tell me to pee in a cup, I dutifully hold it all day so that I can produce a sufficient amount and not disappoint them. When my husband berated me for not telling my beloved internist about a certain issue I was having, I said, “But what if he thinks it’s gross? And then doesn’t like me anymore?” You see, I lurve doctors. Because they are smarties who save lives. And I like to pretend they have all the answers to explain every possible anomaly of the human body, that they learned all these answers in a very popular med school course called “THE ANSWERS!” Sadly, this is not the case. There is no such course. And so they graduate and become doctors without having all the answers. They learn how to use good judgment to get close to the answers…and then they guess. And sometimes they’re right. And sometimes they’re wrong. And sometimes it’s too close to call, which brings me to…

Meredith’s judgment as a doctor. Man, was it tested thoroughly tonight. When adorable serial killer Eric Stolz makes his argument, that this dying kid needs organs, that he is a match for said dying kid, and that he is about to be lethal injection toast in a mere five days, Meredith sort of… agrees. As much as she doesn’t want to agree with a serial killer, as much as Derek makes a very good argument that the guy’s trying to screw the system and it’s not their job as surgeons to help him do it…she still agrees. Because a kid is dying. Because Bailey, unflappable Bailey, is out of ideas and seems utterly broken by that. Because perfectly good organs are going to waste. So she betrays Derek and the oath she took to do no harm, and she does harm. She does harm for what she tells herself, is the greater good - and she helps a patient try to kill himself. Which is why I love Mer in this episode – agree with her or not, she makes a bold, consequences be damned, choice in the end. She just can’t help doing what she thinks is right even if it seems so, so wrong. Even if it comes back to bite her in the ass HARD in the next episode – and by the way, I can’t wait ‘til you all see what happens, because it is truly awesome. She does this because, like Carolyn Shepherd points out to Derek at the end, she doesn’t just see things in black and white, she sees the grey.

Carolyn Shepherd has arrived.

Nothing was more fun on set than to watch Tyne Daly become Derek’s mom. Because she did BECOME Derek’s mom. She was tough and no-nonsense and I don’t blame Mer for being scared out of her mind. I’d wear an absurdly high ponytail too if Carolyn came sniffing around me, checking me out, making sure I was good enough for her son. But as steely as the former military nurse that raised a bunch of little Shepherd babies seems, she’s got a soft underbelly. She immediately recognizes Owen’s pain, even though he’s a fully functioning kick ass trauma surgeon, he’s not okay. He’s not over what he went through in the desert. And she sees that. She sees that Mark Sloan’s finally picked a good girl – even if Lexie lives in an attic like a sorority girl and still drinks from a juice box. And best of all, she sees through the ponytail and the frozen robot smile and the crazy and realizes that Mer’s the one for her son. Personally, I think Carolyn spends a lot of time thinking about how Derek’s father’s death has affected Derek. I think she feels it’s hardened him, made him a man who can’t be swayed from his convictions, sometimes to his detriment. Sometimes at the expense of his humanity. And I think she sees the exact opposite qualities in Meredith. Mer doesn’t see the same line separating right and wrong that Derek does. In fact, I don’t know if she even sees a line at all. Probably more of a blurry smudge. And I think Carolyn feels Derek needs a little of that in his life, needs a little grey (ew, I know, sorry, couldn’t resist). And by the way, that scene at the end when she gives Derek the ring off her finger, and tells him Mer’s the one?? I love the way they played that scene. I didn’t script the tears or Tyne resting her head on Patrick’s shoulder…they just came to that naturally and it kills me every time I see it. Because every son has his issues with his mother, and Derek’s no exception, but at the end of the day, these two are in a really good place – they have a pretty healthy relationship and you hardly ever see that on TV. Speaking of which, I’m going to call my Mom right now…

Okay, now onto relationships that aren’t so normal. Izzie’s been enjoying herself lately, living it up, she’s got two boys on the hook, granted one’s dead, but she’s trying really hard not to let that bother her. But suddenly there’s all this real life drama going on around her – Derek’s Mom is coming and Mer’s freaking out, Cristina’s getting asked on first dates, and suddenly Izzie’s finds herself living vicariously through her friends, and can’t help but notice how her own life isn’t measuring up. Sure, she’s got two boyfriends, double the doting, double the kissing, but I think this is the first time Izzie’s actually comparing them to each other. And it pretty much boils down to this - one is clumsily and sweetly asking her to road trip to Iowa to meet his mother – and one is invisible to the rest of the world. And no matter how much Izzie loves Denny, how grateful she is to have him “back”, she has to admit, in the end, there’s no future with Denny. And there is one with Alex. And it kills her to do it, but she takes action, she chooses Alex. And I’m really proud of her for that. I love the break-up scene, because Denny may not be real, may not even be alive, but in that scene, he still gets dumped, he still gets the “it’s not you, it’s me” speech from Izzie. Which, and I may be in the minority here, was a little funny to me. In a sad/funny way. Because you can see on his face in that moment he sort of can’t believe she dumped him. CAUSE HE’S DEAD. But she did. Even dead guys get dumped. Now the next move’s up to him…

Cristina and Owen are really having a rocky time of it, aren’t they? Boy meets Girl, Boy kisses Girl, Boy goes off to War and comes back all effed up, Forgets who Girl is, Remembers Girl, Asks Girl on Date then shows up Wasted. Now Cristina’s still not talking to Mer, still blames Mer for not having her back in the whole interns gone wild debacle, but if things were normal between them, these ladies would have A LOT to talk about. Like the fact that Owen asked Cristina on a date and then showed up drunk. (But, if you noticed, still brought beautiful flowers - even intoxicated, Owen’s still the consummate gentleman) And the fact that he then proceeded to get in her shower FULLY CLOTHED and tell her about his best surgery ever – which was pretty much a tragic horror story. It’s becoming pretty clear that this guy has been deeply broken by his Iraq experience, and I think Cristina’s finally realizing the extent of the breakage. But it’s not gonna scare her away. Because it takes a lot to scare Cristina Yang. And because she feels drawn to Owen, despite the warning signs of trouble ahead, despite him wearing shoes in her shower, and when she gets in the water with him at the end, we see something on Cristina Yang’s face that we hardly ever see – the complete absence of judgment. Total acceptance of Owen, battle scars and all. Because we all know that when it comes down to it, when it counts, Cristina’s anything but a robot. For me, that was probably the most important scene in the script to get right. And Jeannot, our amazing, adorable French director with his adorable French accent, nailed it. (to be perfectly honest, he could have shot his own toes for 42 minutes and I probably would’ve loved that too – seriously, he’s that adorably French) Kevin and Sandra nailed it too. And even though Kevin had to stand in a freezing cold shower for about three hours in an Armani suit, he did not complain ONCE. That guy is game.

Anyway, back to the white coats.

I suppose you could argue that they’re just human, just like the rest of us. They don’t rely on super-powers, they rely on years of training and educated guesses. But I will not stop obsessively loving/stalking them and here is why. The thing that blows my mind is that they have to trust their own judgment, every day, make snap decisions and go with it – and when a life is on the line – that takes guts. When was the last time you ordered a latte and didn’t immediately wonder if you maybe wanted a cappuccino instead? For me, it was this morning and if people’s lives depended on me making timely, confident decisions and not looking back… well, they’d be dead as doornails. So I’m gonna go ahead and say that while they may not be gods, they may not be flying around in capes, the people in the white coats are still pretty damn special. And yes, maybe just a little more special than the rest of us.

'Grey's Anatomy' Aftergasm: McMommies, Tequila and Ghosts - Friday, January 16, 2009
There were two things that I loved about last night's episode of Grey's Anatomy: the guest stars and the tequila. Everybody raise your hand if you think Tyne Daly's Carolyn Shepherd should stick around as a recurring character? We're unanimous, then. There was one thing that I could really have lived without, but I'll get to those in a bit.

First: McMommy. Tyne Daly was perfectly cast to be Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) mother and she even has the proper McHair for the role. She was great interrogating Lexie (Chyler Leigh) on whether she is a good girl and her number of sexual partners and traffic violations. She was great telling Mark (Eric Dane) to stop thinking so little of himself. The thing she did that made me the happiest was how she understood Meredith's (Ellen Pompeo) dark and cloudiness. She probably knows from years of experience how self-righteous and douchebaggy Derek can be sometimes, and she sees Meredith's ability to see all shade of grey (geddit?) as a very good thing. I'm hoping that Tyne Daly will come back to Grey's Anatomy soon, because a lot of people who work at Seattle Grace need a lesson or two from McMommy.

Next, I absolutely adored the opening scenes, in which Meredith and her roommates are up until 4 in the morning, cleaning the house and preparing Meredith to meet McMommy. Meredith was frazzled and panicked, clutching the bottle of tequila to her chest like a life vest. There's the boozing Meredith Grey whom we all know and love! Izzie (Katherine Heigl) was also great, running around and cleaning the house, giving Meredith tips on how to be shiny and bubbly. Sometimes, there is so much drama going on at the hospital that we forget that all these residents are also roommates and good friends.

What I didn't like about the episode was the very end after Izzie breaks up with Dead!Denny! (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Alex (Justin Chambers) suggests that they go visit his mother, and Izzie leaves to get the tequila to celebrate Alex's growth as a human. That was a really cute scene, but Dead!Denny! had to go and ruin it by sitting down next to Alex to talk to him. But the thing is, Dead!Denny! is a figment of Izzie's damaged brain, so how could he still be present after Izzie has left the room? If a tree falls in the forest and Izzie isn't there to see it, does it still exist?

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.12 "Sympathy For The Devil" Recap (Page 1/4) - Thursday, January 15, 2009
Grey's Anatomy begins in the middle of the night tonight. Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) young patient who needs like a bazillion transplants is still around this week. Bailey's in a tizzy about his condition, and pages Arizona Robbins at 2:30 in the morning to strategize about getting him bumped up on the transplant list. Robbins isn't so happy about being paged in the middle of the nigh for something that isn't an emergency.
Derek (Patrick Dempsey) is also paged because the PDR patient, played by the creepy Eric Stoltz, is getting worse. His brain contusions are expanding, and if he doesn't have surgery soon, he'll die. Since he's about to be executed by the state in five days, he's thinking that he should refuse the surgery and try dying a natural death.
Apparently, Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is now living in Meredith's attic. She has Mark (Eric Dane) stashed up there for some nooky, who wants to sneak out, but all the other denizens of the frat house are downstairs cleaning the house in anticipation of Derek's mother coming to visit, which makes a sneaky sneak-out difficult. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) , who happens to be great with mothers, is the only one who seems to actually do any cleaning. This is a great scene, with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) reunited with the tequila bottle and all the kids hanging out together again.....cont’d

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Sympathy For The Devil -Jan 16, 2009
Momma Shepherd comes to town and meets the staff of Seattle Grace, the creepy serial killer gets brain surgery, McBadass finally asks Cristina on a date, Sloane begins to cut himself some slack, the wizard gives Bailey's buddy a new kidney, and Izzie finally dumps Denny, but he's still not gone! And how is it that I've just now noticed that every episode this season is named after a classic song?

The creepy creepy serial killer's brain is swelling and Shepherd makes the mistake of warning him that continued swelling could cause him to die. Sensing an escape from the death penalty, Captain McSlashy tries to refuse surgery, but Shepherd just points out that when he loses consciousness and thus is no longer able to make informed decisions, it just takes two doctors agreeing that he needs the surgery to perform the surgery. ....... there’s more

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Mother May I? Jan 16, 2009
As Bailey struggles to save her favorite kid patient, Cristina and Owen connect even more, and Mrs. Shepherd drops by to help Derek and Mark with their ladies

Now this is my Grey's.

Eric Stoltz Serial Killer and Kid Who Needs Organs playing off each other — and more importantly, playing the doctors off each other — perfectly. Ponytail humor. Interesting secondary medical cases that also illuminate the human condition. Tyne Daly guest starring as Derek's mom.
Yes.
Okay, so it wasn't perfect. So Denny was still lingering, and the annoying blond pediatric doctor was still annoying, and Lexie and Mark were still hooking up. But if you ignore those little lingering problems, things went great. So that's what we're going to do. We're going to ignore those things today and focus on the good stuff, because the good was so good, and my complaints about the aforementioned have been aforementioned to death.
So onto the greatness. Bailey's prized kid patient, Jackson, needed a liver and intestines so badly that she was obsessing about it in the middle of the night, even paging the Blond Doctor Who Shall Not Be Named to chat about it. Eric Stoltz was pondering the fact that his execution would be in five days, and he'd rather die in the hospital. We could see where this was going.

McDreamy's mom visits ‘Grey's Anatomy’ - Jan 16, 2009
Plus: Organ donation creates yet another ethical dilemma - Mother knows debilitating tension: Derek’s mother visited, which had Meredith in a nervous knot. Izzie helpfully removed every potentially embarrassing item from the house (except the dead boyfriend), while Meredith dressed to impress with a kicky ponytail. Unfortunately for Meredith, McMama turned out to be Tyne Daly, and if anyone is going to be wise to Meredith Grey, it’s Tyne Daly. Ultimately, though, she gave Meredith a hearty thumbs-up.
Sympathy for the devil: The saga of Eric Stoltz as William Dunn, a hospitalized death-row prisoner, continued, as he refused necessary brain surgery, figuring it wouldn’t be so bad to die in the hospital instead of by lethal injection. Derek, of course, was determined to get him well enough for execution.
The obligatory heart-tugging child: Things got complicated when the prisoner told Meredith he’d donate his organs to Bailey’s desperate young patient. There was another donor, but (of course) those organs failed, and Meredith alone knew that Dunn could step in. Her decision to the ethical dilemma was (as usual) to duck it, here by telling him how to destroy his own brain, the better to allow the harvesting of his organs. As the episode ended, he took her advice, slamming his delicate, post-surgery melon into the edge of his bed...............cont’d

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Sympathy for the Devil" - Jan 16, 2009
In this episode of Grey's Anatomy, Derek's mom comes to town and meets Meredith for the first time, Owen finally asks Cristina out on a date and the death row patient at Seattle Grace offers to help save a life by sacrificing his own.

In a great ensemble moment, this week's episode began with Meredith surrounded by her friends at home in a makeshift group therapy session meant to help her cope with the fact that Derek's mom, Carolyn (Tyne Daly), is coming to town. For some reason, Mer already had it in her head that mom's don't like her and would prefer shiny, happy people like Izzie. So, Mer does what she thinks is the next best thing and starts soliciting Izzie for advice. The result? A Mer makeover, complete with an "alarmingly high ponytail" and a forced smile that won't quit, even when Meredith and Carolyn's lunch time talk takes a morbid turn.

Mer does her best for most of this episode to be the person that she thinks Carolyn would want her son to date, but in the end, she confesses to Mrs. Shepherd that she's much more dark and twisty than she appears. Based on Carolyn's response to this confession (and the horrific look on Izzie's face who happened to be nearby at the time), it seemed as though Mer had just permanently written herself out of the Shepherd family photo album. So, who would have guessed that Carolyn would later give Derek her engagement ring to give to Meredith? Not I, but Carolyn seemed to get that Meredith is the yin to his yang.....................cont.

'Grey's Anatomy': The Death Penalty and Derek's Mom - Jan 15, 2009
Ellenpompeo_greysanatomy_s3_240 Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Sometimes it's nothing more than parts. Tonight, Grey's Anatomy was all about parts -- how they fit together, how they break apart, how they're cut away, and how we let go of them. Plus, we got to see the second part of the serial killer arc and watch a character who could've been just perky and annoying turn substantive and interesting. And Tyne Daley put in a fabulous guest appearance.
Let's start with our death row inmate, Dunn (Eric Stoltz). His brain's swelling, and Derek wants to operate. But the condemned killer would rather die in the hospital, so he's refusing treatment. Derek tasks Meredith and Cristina with closely monitoring his condition. When he becomes unconscious, two doctors can consent to treat him and overrule his wishes. Cristina's on board, but sensing a sympathetic soul, Dunn tries to appeal to Meredith, who's conflicted and doesn't have the same quest for justice that Derek does.
Bailey's getting impatient with Jackson's case, and she's getting emotional -- pushing Dr. Robbins to try to finagle a higher place on the transplant list for him. As Bailey wheels Jackson down the hallway and Meredith wheels Dunn from the opposite way, they meet, and Jackson's immediately fascinated by the bad guy he sees handcuffed to the cot. Dunn very creepily offers the kid his liver and intestine, which gets the kid's hopes up. Bailey, desperate, approaches Robbins with a stopgap plan, and the two end up duking it out when Bailey can't put aside her contempt for Robbins' wanting to trust the transplant process. Now, I hate the whole perky-blonde-doctor thing as much as the next person, but Robbins is actually quite sane, thoughtful and even-keeled. She's like the opposite of Dr. Sydney Heron, the terminally peppy resident who kept driving Bailey nuts last season.................there’s more

DATES TO REMEMBER & OTHER STUFF

ABC Boss Not Spooked by Grey's Anatomy "Ghost" Story - Jan 16, 2009
The final day of the Television Critics Association winter press tour kicked off with ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson tackling such tough subjects as the ever-changing broadcast business model, the fate of the three-camera comedy, and ... whether he 'ships Izzie-Dead Denny.

"Listen, the viewers will be the judge; that's the good and the bad of this business," McPherson said when asked for his take on the controversial Grey's Anatomy storyline. "I think that when you get to the end of the season, you'll see everything that [Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes] had in mind. It might not be your cup of tea, but I think you will be surprised at how insightful and actually smart the storyline is in terms of the dynamics that it's creating for the characters who are involved, and where we end up with those characters at the end."

Since the season premiere, Katherine Heigl's Izzie has seen, talked to and yes, had hot, loud and sweaty sex with her deceased fiancé (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Though McPherson reiterated that Denny is not appearing as a ghost to Izzie, he refused to comment any further on the ultimate direction of the storyline.

"When you're talking about long-term serialized dramas, there's going to be some stuff that people don't respond to," he acknowledged. "You put it out there and see what works and doesn't work."

McPherson hailed Rhimes as "one of the most — if not the most — talented woman writer out there right now. She's responded to the criticism incredibly well."

What is McPherson's suggestion to those who don't think the spooky story has a ghost of a chance of wrapping up well? "Watch the show.”

Dispatch from press tour: ABC president talks 'Grey's ghost, unhappy actors, canceled shows and more
-Friday January 16, 2009
ABC president Steve McPherson's executive session on the press tour's last day was lively enough, with talk about the ghost sex storyline on "Grey's Anatomy," the cancellation of shows like "Pushing Daisies" and more, that it would have been worth covering anyway. But the scrum with reporters after the press conference was remarkably contentious once reporters started asking about unrest on the set of "Grey's."

Here are a few excerpts from the scrum:

Why are so many "Grey's Anatomy" actors jumping ship?
Which actors have jumped ship?
Melissa George.
Melissa George was a guest for one episode.
So many guests are just leaving. And she was more than one episode.

I'm not going to answer the question. It's an absurd question. The only person who has left the show was Isaiah Washington.
Brooke Smith.
(At this point, McPherson's eyes narrow as he turns his head and exhales in disgust.)

Melissa had contracted for 8 and wasn't on all of them.
She didn't contract for that many episodes
That's what she says.
We all know what everybody says when they leave the show. They want to say what's best for them.
It was more than one.
I think it was three episodes. She was talked about in one, and she was in two others.

(IMDB says she was in five, and I can think of at least four off the top of my head.)

Brooke Smith was in the opening credits at the start of the season. Was that, did you just not like the character or the story?
Yeah, the character was not working for us, and the dynamic with the relationship was not working for us. We feel Sara is such a dynamic character, and an amazing actress and we just weren't seeing the excitement out of that relationship. There was some mention that we were upset by the lesbian nature, but she is going to be in a dedicated lesbian relationship on the show. So, again, that was an actress who was trying to talk about something in the manner that would serve her in the manner.

There's been a lot of talk about T.R. Knight being unhappy and wanting to leave the show.
I'm not going to comment on behind the scenes stuff. Stuff gets said that spreads, stuff that's wrong.
Do you expect him to be with the show next season?
Yes.

Do you expect "Grey's" to be back next season?
That's the last question. (He starts walking away, shaking his head.) It's the number three show on television.

Things were tamer in the session, where the topics covered included:

• On the "Izzie has sex with a ghost" story from "Grey's": "It's not a ghost, which you'll learn. When you get to the end of the season, you'll see what everything she had in mind. It might not be your cup of tea, but you'll be surprised at how insightful and actually smart the story line is."

• On the failure of shows like "Pushing Daisies" and "Dirty Sexy Money" that ABC didn't bring back immediately after the writers strike last season: "We could have probably gotten maybe 2 or 3 episodes of the Wednesday night shows on the air in the spring. What we were worried about then was, we were looking at the SAG strike, and that it could start in the summer and completely disintegrate the fall. So we made the gamble, hindsight is 20/20, clearly people did not come back to them the way we had hoped. I don't know that we had a better option. I just wish the strike hadn't happened at all."

(McPherson later said that he would love to find a way to air the remaining episodes of those shows and "Eli Stone," but that a number of financial and rights issues had to be resolved first, even just to put them all up on ABC.com.)

• On the ratings for "Scrubs" so far and whether he might want to keep the show going after Zach Braff leaves at the end of this season, McPherson said he was mostly pleased with the ratings but is waiting for more data. And while he and "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence continue to talk about another year for the show, "It would be hard to do it without Zach."

• On whether this is at last, at long last, the final season for "According to Jim": "Don't you think we should leave that open? 'Jim' has been an amazing asset for us... I think this is probably the final run, but you never say never."

McPherson on Brooke Smith's firing - January 16, 2009
TCA – Things get testy post-panel as critics press ABC's entertainment president Steve McPherson about actress Brooke Smith’s firing from “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Asked if he’s concerned about actors departing “Grey’s” in general and McPherson says it’s “an absurd question," and he spars with a critic about how many episodes departing actress Melissa George had appeared in this season. When pressed about Smith’s firing, McPherson says, “the character was not working for us and the relationship was not working for us,” and he says Smith’s post-firing take on the situation “was just an actress [talking] in a manner that was useful to her.”
McPherson defends the “Grey’s” storyline where Katherine Heigl’s character has a romance with the ghost of her departed lover.
“It’s not a ghost, as you will learn,” he says. “When you get to the end of season and see everything she had in mind ... I really like the story line when we heard the show season laid out.”
McPherson also emphasizes that the creative quality of “Private Practice” is improving.
“This season ‘Practice' really found the show,” he says. “We got back to the Addison we knew."

Breaking: ABC prez tackles 'Grey's Anatomy' ghost sex - Jan 16, 2009
This just in from press tour: ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson is speaking out about Grey's Anatomy's controversial ghost story involving Izzie and Denny. "[Denny] is not a ghost, which you will learn," he says. "I actually think when you get to the end of the season and you see everything she had in mind, it might not be your cup of tea, but I think you'll be surprised at how insightful and smart that storyline itself is in terms of the dynamics it's creating for the characters involved and where we end up with those characters at the end… The viewers will be the judge. That's the good and the bad about this business. I think shows ebb and flow. And when you talk about long-term serialized dramas, you're going to have some stuff that people don't respond to."

Other highlights from the Alphabet's exec session:

• On whether he'll air the remaining episodes of Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money: "We'd like to air the end of those shows," said McPherson. "I wish we had been [able to give] the producers series-ending notice so they could really have a finale. But because of the way the timing worked out, we weren't able to. I really love those shows. They delivered what they promised. For us, it was a frustration that we couldn't find a larger audience – or that Nielsen couldn't find a larger audience. " (Odd response considering producers of all three shows did have time to craft series-ending episodes. This demands a post-panel follow-up.)

• On getting Marc Cherry to reconsider ending Desperate Housewives after just seven seasons: "I think he finally realized that I would lock him up and not let him do that."

• McPherson is satisfied with the creative direction of Private Practice, and has high hopes for the show's upcoming crossover arc with Grey's.
