We all get at least one good wish a year. Over the candles on our birthday. Some of us throw in more. On eyelashes. Fountains. Lucky stars and every now and then one of those wishes comes true. So what then? Is it as good as we’d hoped? Do we bask in the warm glow of our happiness or do we just notice we’ve got a long list of other wishes just waiting to be wished.

We don’t wish for the easy stuff, we wish for big things. Things that are ambitious, out of reach. We wish cause we need help, and we’re scared .... and we know we may be asking for too much. We still wish though, because........ sometimes......... they come true.

The Stars Were Out (and About) - Hitting the Post-Globe Party Circuit
Grant Show enjoyed a drink on the patio , his last moments standing up right before going back to work Monday morning as a coma victim on the set of Grey's Anatomy. He’s part of the upcoming crossover episode with Private Practice, playing Addison’s brother, Archer. He said he’s got a few lines in the special episodes, but "mainly I'm having seizures or am in the coma." On Thursday, he heads off to South Africa to begin working as Natalee Holloway's step father (opposite Tracy Pollan as the mother) in the upcoming Lifetime movie, The Natalee Holloway Story. Raved Show: "It’s an excellent script that really makes you think.”

Exclusive: Grey's Digs Dirt Star as McArmy's Old Flame - Jan 13, 2009
As teased weeks ago in a Mitovich Mega Minute, Grey's Anatomy is going to be shedding light on the shadowy Owen Hunt — by introducing viewers to someone from the Army vet's past.

Playing Owen's ex-lover, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively, will be Laura Allen, whom you either know from A) Dirt, B) The 4400 or C) All My Children. Allen will guest-star in this season's 15th episode, which is shooting this week (and also marks Melissa George's final appearance as Sadie).

Kevin McKidd himself gave me the heads up on this storyline development when I ran into him at Sunday's Golden Globes after-parties. McKidd also hinted that to further explore his character, Hunt's mother or father might be cast later this season.

Casting News - Melissa George - Monday, January 12, 2009
As I taught you long ago, the Golden Globes aren't so much a showcase for award-worthy talent and polarizing fashion as they are a hotbed for exclusive prattle. To wit, shortly after Sunday's kudosfest ended, Melissa George presented me with a doozy of a scoop: She's leaving Grey's Anatomy, STAT.

"It was my choice," the actress-slash-Golden Globe nominee (for In Treatment) confirmed to me at HBO's red-hot after-party, held poolside at the Beverly Hilton. "My last day of work is Tuesday."

But lest you think this is yet another in a long line of rocky Grey's exits (see also: Isaiah Washington, Brooke Smith, possibly T.R. Knight), George, who joined the ABC soap last November as Mer's maybe-gay BFF, is leaving on the best of terms................cont’d

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ exclusive: Faye Dunaway scrubbing in – Jan 11, 2008
Someone's been hiding out at Seattle Grace all these years, and trust me when I say you are never going to believe who it is.
Mommie Dearest -- Faye Dunaway!
Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Oscar winner (for Network), who hasn't taken a small-screen gig since a 2006 episode of CSI, has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen.

Eric Stoltz to Guest Star on 'Grey's Anatomy' -3 December 2008
ABC's hit series, "Grey's Anatomy", will have a new patient to be taken care of when Eric Stoltz lands on the series. As reported exclusively by EW's Michael Ausiello, the popular medical drama has picked up the future star of Sci Fi's "Caprica", Stoltz, to guest star on its upcoming episodes.
According to EW, the 47-year-actor will play as a serial killer in need for immediate medical attention on Seattle Grace Hospital. Joining the series leading characters, such as Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, and Justin Chamber, the actor who has directed several episodes of "Grey's" this season will be seen on the medical drama series for three episodes.
Completing the guest-star list are "Blind Trust" star, Jessica Capshaw, and actress-screenwriter Jennifer Westfeldt. Reported to guest star on the medical series for a multi-episode arc, Capshaw will play a pediatric surgeon named Arizona Roberts, while Westfeldt will become a new patient.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on 'Grey's,' 'House,' 'One Tree Hill,' 'The Office,' Supernatural,' 'True Blood,' and more! - Jan 14, 2009
Question: C'mon, your info on Grey's Anatomy has been non-existent recently. Please give me some of the good stuff -- I want juicy plot goodness, Mer-Der related, preferably. -- Amanda
Ausiello: I'm hearing something about a ring and a possible proposal later this season.

Question: Loving Lexie and Mark on Grey's. Anything good coming up for them? -- Mike
Ausiello: They experience a little bit of a setback next week that's connected to this ABC teaser: "An injury leaves Mark in a compromising position in the ER." And now the official translation: McSteamy fractures his McPenis!

Question: What's the latest on TR Knight leaving Grey's Anatomy? -- Peter
Ausiello: I posed that question to exiting Grey's star Melissa George, and she claimed reports of TR's unhappiness have been greatly exaggerated. "The day the rumors came out we were doing a scene in the cafeteria, and the admiration for him and his set persona was so high and so brilliant, that we were all laughing about it." However, Melissa didn't deny that TR has been frustrated by his lack of screen time this season. "He's an extraordinary actor, and when you care about your craft, you want to work -- you want to use it. It's like being a doctor and they never give you a surgery...But you know what? The guy's got a future beyond Grey's, whether that's no or later, or whenever."

Grey's Anatomy: Will Eric Stoltz Murder MerDer? - Tue., Jan. 6, 2009
Oh, dear. I just spoke exclusively with Eric Stoltz about his upcoming three-episode guest arc on Grey's Anatomy, and what he told me about his death-row inmate character sounds downright ominous for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)?

Could one of our heroes be in real danger? Get the dish directly from Eric himself...

Side Summary for Ep 5.11 ..........credit to Crys at Twop

So Jackson will be on for a 3 episode arc. The sides are 4 pages long with a few characters. Jackson (patient), Melinda Craig (mother, 30s), Steiner/Scott Grant/Rick Antoine are doctors. Steiner and Melinda go way back.

Scene 1

Grant is looking over Jackson's chart. Steiner puts a reassuring hand on Melinda's shoulder and remarks at how big Jackson has gotten. Jackson says he only looks big because Steiner is short to which Steiner says he's always been short. Steiner introduces Dr. (Rick) Antoine to Melinda saying he may be ugly but he's one of the good ones. Grant contines to examine Jackson and tells Dr. Steiner to take Melinda and go through today's procedure. Steiner pulls Rick and Melinda into the hall. In the hall Melinda asks them if they saw how pale he is.

While those 3 are in the hall, Grant continues to examine Jackson. Grant has a pocket full of lollipops and Jackson asks him if he's going to let him have a lollipop this time. Grant says not with the way Jackson's stomach has been acting lately which is why he's going to have to cut a piece of it out again. Grant is talking and stops abruptly, he looks green and sits heavily on the bed.

Scene 2 -- Grant's dead...

Melinda and Steiner are in the hallway outside Jackson's room. Melinda is worried about Jackson even more so now that Grant is dead. Grant was the doctor who had been treating Jackson and Melinda says that people don't understand Jackson's condition. Steiner agrees that Grant was a great doctor who helped so many kids. Steiner tells Melinda that he was in the OR everytime Grant opened Jackson up and he knows the treatment plan. He will personally make sure that Jackson gets someone brilliant to work on him. Melinda is terrified and tears up. Steiner puts and arm around her and says they've been through too much and that they aren't going to drop the ball now.

While Melinda and Steiner are having that conversation in the hallway, Rick is drawing blood for Jackson's pre-op labs. Rick says he's sorry about Dr. Grant. Jackson brushes him off saying everyone dies and that he'll soon die too. Rick is surprised at Jackson's pessimism and tells him he's not going to die, he's just sick. Jackson says he's had 12 surgeries, he never gets better, he's not stupid and knows he can't be fixed. Rick says just because they haven't solved it yet doesn't mean he's done, he's still a long way from done. Jackson pulls out a page from his night stand. Jackson wants to be a Wish Kid and needs a doctor to sign the page. He wants Rick to sign it saying Grant was going to sign it before he died. Rick refuses to sign. Jackson insists saying if Rick signs, he [Rick] can help him [Jackson] pick his wish. Jackson shows Rick the wishes other kids have done like go on the trapeze or be in a rodeo. Rick says there's no way Grant was going to sign that because it's for kids with life threatening diseases and Jackson isn't dying, he's just sick. Jackson is mad. Rick calls Jackson 'dude' and says the rodeo smells like horse poo so he isn't missing anything.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would say Dr. Rick Antoine is Alex because he calls the kid 'dude.' Steiner has known Melinda for a while and has been in the OR everytime Jackson has had surgery. Jackson's problem seems to be his stomach and Steiner is apparently also short so that makes me think that this is Bailey. This would likely mean that Bailey and Alex's patient for the next 3 episodes will be Jackson. I'm pretty sure Grant isn't one of our regular castmembers since he/she dies so it could be a random guest star. I also thought that perhaps Grant is Mary McDonnell's character who may have come on the show a few episodes beforehand and she ends her stint when her character dies. Do we know what episode MM first appears?

SONG TITLE REFERENCE & LYRICS ~ EPISODE PLAYLIST

Song Title

Pink Floyd - "Wish You Were Here"

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

EP RECAP

01/08/2009 - "Wish You Were Here"
Season 5, Episode 511
William, a heavily guarded death row patient, arrives at Seattle Grace with a serious stab wound. His presence amps up the tension between Cristina and Meredith, who still aren't talking. It also causes a rift between Meredith, who is sympathetic to the patient's complaints of severe pain, and Derek, who takes offense when William tells him, "We're not that different you and I. People are alive when they meet us and then it all changes somehow."

William's X-rays reveal that a piece of the homemade knife is still in his spine and he needs an operation, even though he's scheduled to be executed the following week.

Witnessing the animosity between Meredith and Cristina as they argue whether William deserves their care, a puzzled Owen tells Derek, "I thought they were friends." "They were," says Derek.

George catches Izzie talking to Denny, which she calmly explains by saying she likes to "think out loud." Since Alex told her he loves her, she decides she has to tell him the truth about Denny. "Tell him I said, hi," Alex says, shrugging it off.

George asks Lexie if she's ever coming home and she tells him, "Rent the room."

Mark tells Lexie that she was "fantastic," but that "It can't happen again and no one's going to know about it." Seeing how Mark tries to avoid Lexie, Callie figures out that he slept with her. "Only once," Mark says, explaining how Lexie "violated him with her nakedness," and he couldn't refuse. Callie tells him that he should be a professional, but then loses her cool when Sadie flirts with her.

Miranda tells Alex to take special care with a boy, Jackson, whom she's been helping treat for three years. The boy's long-term doctor, Dr. Kenley, collapses with a heart attack as he's examining the boy. The chief takes the news of Kenley's death hard and retires into his office, with a huge "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door.

A young female doctor, Dr. Arizonan Robbins, takes over Jackson's case and dismisses her late colleague's approach as outdated, much to Miranda's dismay. Once they open the boy up, Dr. Robbins is appalled by the condition he's in and says, "This boy should have been on a transplant list a year ago. It's a miracle he's still alive."

Miranda goes to Richard to complain and he points out that Miranda's never approved of any of the attendings and that Robbins graduated at the top of her class. "Deal with it," he orders her.

Miranda begs Derek to go talk to the Chief. "I'm not worried about Kenley dying or me dying," Richard tells Derek. "I'm worried about my hospital dying." He laments that he can't keep a cardiac surgeon and can't find anyone to replace Kenley. "I failed at the one thing I spent my whole life, doing," he says, insisting he's going to stay right where he is.

Miranda demands a second opinion after Dr. Robbins insists they put Jackson on the transplant list, so Arizona gives her the name of a top surgeon at Johns Hopkins. Miranda is finally convinced she knows what she's talking about. When she admits as much to Richard, he agrees to look at the boy's file.

Meredith calls Derek "inhumane" when he refuses to give William more morphine. "Killing people is inhumane. Denying him painkillers is a judgment call," he answers. Cristina asks William what he did to get on death row and he tells her and Meredith that he slit several women's throats, for "fun."

Cristina starts to vent to Owen about Meredith, but he brushes her off. When he offers to go out for a beer later, she say she's tired of the hot and cold routine and to "just leave me the hell alone."

Sadie sees that Meredith and Cristina are still not talking and reminds Meredith, "We had a fight like that once," and that their friendship was never the same afterward because Meredith "froze her out." She advises her not to let that happen with Cristina.

Mark and Callie obsess over their intern crushes together. Callie proposes they start their own recovery program, the first and only step of which is "Don't get naked with an intern." But that night at Joe's, Mark falls off the wagon and leaves with Lexie. "Damn, damn, damn," Callie swears when Sadie glances her way. Instead of going over to her, Callie orders another drink.

Izzie tells Alex more details about Denny: That she sees him all the time and the two even have sex, but Alex is okay with her having a "fantasy," even if it's not about him. Alex bakes a cake for Izzie's birthday and tells her to make a wish. She says she already has everything she wants, so he advises her, "Then wish that everything stays the same."

When Derek gets home, he tells Meredith why he was so angry about the death row inmate: two men killed his father because he wouldn't give up his watch. "As doctors, we're supposed to treat everyone the same, but they're not all the same." He says he wishes he could make things better between her and Cristina and wants to know what Cristina would do to cheer her up in this situation. "She'd turn up the music up really loud and make me dance it out with her," she answers, so that's just what he does.

Grey Matter

Debora Cahn on "Wish You Were Here"...

Original Airdate: 1-8-09

Cristina and Meredith are fighting. I hate it when they fight. They’re so damn miserable. You’d think maybe they’d enjoy it. Worthy opponents, squaring off. Throw down of the century. But no. Not even Cristina, who usually relishes the opportunity to tear anyone a new one, seems like this is just eating away at her soul. Where’s the sense of fun? Of sport? Can’t they try to get into the spirit of it? No. They both look kind of oxygen deprived. And that’s really what it’s like. You go through something like surgical residency – it’s a program designed to almost kill you. Like boot camp, but it goes on for years. How do you get through it? For Mer and Cristina, you survive by having a person by your side – minute by minute, trauma by trauma. Someone who will make you laugh when you have part of a dead person’s lymph node in your hair. Someone who will tell you your attending’s a brainless chinless douche bag when he’s just spent twenty hours explaining why you’re a moron. Someone who’s in it with you. And without that someone – it’s just torture. The days are grueling. The work is relentless. The satisfaction is nonexistent. It’s miserable. Without your other half… it’s like breathing without the oxygen. But Mer’s got Derek, shouldn’t that help? Not really. It’s not the same kind of other half. He’s there for her when it’s all over, but he’s not in it. He may remember what it was like to be a resident, but probably it’s like women who go through labor. It sucks just badly enough that something in your brain makes you forget. It’s hazy for Derek, the days in the trenches. He’s probably grown a little nostalgic about it. He can’t remember what it was really like.

And Owen… wouldn’t it be great if Cristina had Owen to turn to? Sure, he’d be like Derek – not a replacement for Meredith, but still. He’d be something. Wouldn’t we all feel a little better? So why can’t he get his damn act together? Why is he so damn hot and cold all the time? Why? He’s big and strapping and gorgeous and brilliant and capable and strapping and gorgeous, why is he such a basket case? Cristina doesn’t trust people. She just doesn’t come to it naturally. But here he is, holding out a hand, or at least a cup of coffee. She decided to let him in… and every time she comes to him in a moment of need, he’s totally checked out. Don’t you want to just smack him upside the head?

And while we’re smacking people upside the head… CHIEF RICHARD WEBBER. WHAT THE @#$%? I think that’s the real problem, for everyone, on this particular day. The Chief has checked out. He’s on strike. Gone. It’s like the center of gravity stopped pulling, and everyone’s about to slip off the face of the planet. Bailey, for a change, is the only one who really notices what’s going on. But there’s not a whole hell of a lot she can do about it. He’s known his hospital dropped to #12 for weeks. But he never really looked at it. Never really felt what it meant. It was a number somewhere on a chart. It sucked, but it didn’t change anything. Right up until Jordan Kenley dropped dead on a patient’s bed (that poor traumatized child) and the Chief discovered no good pediatric surgeon wanted to come here and take his place. Devastating. The Chief’s never experienced anything like that. He never had to ask, never mind beg, surgeons to come to this hospital. They were clamoring at the door. And now… people don’t want to work here? Add him to the list of people who are trying to walk the halls without oxygen. Except he had the good sense to lie down, in a dark room, and put a Do Not Disturb sign on the door.

And Derek. Saving the life of a serial killer. When all he can do is look in the guy’s eyes and imagine the face of the man who shot his dad.

And Mark Sloan… Mark Sloan who could always find happiness, or at least some brief gratification, in an on-call room, with pretty much anyone, but certainly with Callie, Mark Sloan is falling, hard, for the Littlest Grey. And his conscience, which has always been buried pretty deep, won’t let him have her. He betrayed Derek once. It was a biggie. And he can’t do it again. Despite the fact that Lexie’s trotting around him like a happy puppy. He can’t go there. Won’t. Talk about lack of oxygen…

People are having a really crappy day.

Except Izzie. Who couldn’t really be happier. So she hangs out with a dead guy, it’s a detail. She’s got the two loves of her life by her side. And they’re kind of getting in a pissing contest with each other, where the best way to win is to impress her in the sack. Or in an exam room. Really anywhere with a horizontal surface. So she’s a friggin whack job, she’s having a great time. And Alex, who thankfully has had enough crazy women in his life that Izzie’s confession about seeing dead people strikes him as pretty close to normal… Alex is cool with it. That’s the nice thing about being raised by a boozer and a junkie, it takes a lot to flip you out.

So… to the skeptics… to those who wonder why we let this woman spend her time with a dead guy, A DEAD MAN, WE SAW HIM DIE, WE’RE REALLY QUITE SURE HE’S NOT THE KIND OF PERSON YOU SPEND TIME WITH… It makes her happy. And she’s the only one who is. She wished he were here. And her wish came true. That’s supposed to make you happy. It often doesn’t. Be careful what you wish for, and all that. But sometimes it does. Sometimes it makes you really happy. So he’s dead. Why get bogged down in the details?

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.11 "Wish You Were Here" Recap - January 08, 2009
We all get at least one good wish a year, as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) voiceovers at the beginning of tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy. Cristina (Sandra Oh) stands over the whoosh! vent in the hospital basement where she kissed Major McHottie last, as we cut to Meredith and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) waking up with an early morning quickie before work. Except that the sun is already brightly streaming in through the windows. If the Grey's Anatomy producers knew anything about Seattle, they would know that in January, sunlight is hard to come by. I would say that it looks to be about 10 in the morning. Slackers.

Meredith and Cristina are still in a fight, so things get tense when they are both assigned to the pit for a trauma patient with Derek and Major McHottie (Kevin McKidd). The patient is a PDR (patient, death-row) with major stab wounds. Richard (James Pickens Jr.) warns them to keep quiet about the case to everyone else, but we all know that you have to have loose lips in order to work at Seattle Grace, so there's no chance of that happening. It's also Izzie's birthday today, but we'll get to that later........................cont’d

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Wish You Were Here - 2009-01-09
Welcome to 2009 and back to Grey's Anatomy! Tonight, Meredith and Cristina continue their feud and get a glimpse of creepy, redheaded evil! Izzie tries to come clean to Alex, but instead gets dirty with him! Sloane and Callie try to resist the forbidden fruit of interns! Annnd... Alex is totally becoming a pediatric surgeon!

Meredith and Cristina are still fighting, but Bailey doesn't care and assigns them both to help Derek and McBadAss on a special assignment from the Chief. When they get to the trauma center, they find out that their special project is a death-row inmate that was beaten and stabbed. Enter the uber-creepy Eric Stoltz.

The doctors don't really know much about Stoltz, other than he's a death-row inmate, but that's enough for Cristina and Derek to be immediately hostile and Derek to refuse morphine even after discovering a toothbrush-shiv in the patient's spine. Meredith, thinking she knows better than anyone, gives the prisoner morphine anyway. When Cristina finally gets the inmate to tell her and Meredith what he did, he turns the creepy - which was at about eight - up to eleven while he describes giving in to his urge to slit a woman's throat and liking it so much that he killed two women the next day and two more the day after that. .............. there’s more

Interview: Eric Stoltz On Grey's Anatomy And The TV Landscape - 2009-01-07
Eric Stoltz is finally stepping from behind the camera on Grey’s Anatomy to play a death row inmate that is admitted to Seattle Grace. I had a chance to speak with Eric briefly about his role on Grey’s, which airs Thursday, January 8 at 9pm ET on ABC. Time constraints on my end may have kept the conversation short, but Eric was gracious even though a cold was causing hearing problems.

Stoltz will appear in Grey’s as William, an inmate who will be causing a rift between characters and causing even more drama on the overtly dramatic show. It appears that the treatment of William calls into question whether a murderer deserves to be saved. When asked whether this storyline was going to be yet another dramatic moment on the show Stoltz quipped, ”I hope so. Otherwise we’re making a comedy.” I think Grey’s could use some levity, even if it comes from a death row inmate. ................more

'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: Fighting Temptation - Jan 9, 2009
While Bailey struggles with a new doctor, the rift between Cristina and Meredith grows wider, and Izzie is torn between alive Alex and dead Denny
It's been more than a month since we had a new Grey's Anatomy, (almost) long enough to forget the bad taste it'd left in my mouth last fall, what with all the resurrected-Denny, new-doctor-paloooza, interns-operating-on-each-other nonsense. I gorged on holiday meals, I drank (lots of) New Year's champagne, and I came back resolved to give Grey's another chance. I wanted it to be good. I wanted it to be great, like second- and third-season great. But I'd settle for good.

I watched Mer and Der canoodling in their cocoon of blankets at the beginning, and I felt warm and cozy. Good. I saw the paramedics bring in Eric Stoltz as a death row prisoner who'd been stabbed. Cool — we could use a kickass medical case............cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': Something for the Pain - Jan 9 2009
Maybe “Grey’s Anatomy” should take a five-week break more often. The beleaguered medical drama returned last night with an episode that, thankfully, wasn’t as painful as a filed-down toothbrush to the spine.

That uncomfortable experience was reserved for the death row inmate, played by occasional “Grey’s” director Eric Stoltz, who was rushed to Seattle Grace after what seemed to be one heckuva prison fight. Considering some of the series’ recent soapy turns, I admit I worried that the serial killer, who’s only a week away from execution, would decide he had nothing to lose, wriggle out of his cuffs and set off on some mad hospital rampage. But so far, the storyline, which continues in the next two episodes, seems more interested in addressing a sticky moral and ethical dilemma: How much good should be done to help such a bad guy? Cool. That works. Especially because it further complicates one of “Grey’s” richest, most fully realized relationships — that between BFF’s Meredith and Cristina — in a believable, interesting way.

Tension’s been building between these two for some time, what with Cristina not being able to fully get behind Mer’s reunion with Der, and Meredith failing to stand up for her friend to the Chief after the whole Fight-Club interns debacle. Now, they find themselves on opposite sides of the ethics debate, acting all “silent ragey.” They’re both clearly hurting without the other, and it kinda hurts to watch — precisely because sometimes really hard, messy stuff happens and there just aren’t any quick fixes, even with your "person.".......more

On ‘Grey's Anatomy,’ not all wishes come true - Jan. 8, 2009
But the Chief finally realized that Seattle Grace is one nutty place
You mean this isn't how a normal hospital operates?: The Chief finally realized that the reason his hospital fell to #12 in national rankings is because it's one big petri dish of crazy. Strangely, it took the death of a fellow doctor to make him realize that a constantly revolving door of docs and interns who operate on each other is pretty weird. When doctors who were approached to replace the deceased doc refused to interview at Seattle Grace, the Chief sank into a funk that lasted almost the entire show. He snapped out of it at the end, but it's really not clear why. It's not like the hospital got any saner while he moped..................cont’d

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Wish You Were Here" - Jan 9, 2009
On this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, a death row inmate checks in and further fuels the rift between Meredith and Cristina, Callie and Mark join a special support group, and Izzie finally tells Alex about her not so innocent encounters with Denny.

When William (Eric Stoltz) arrived at Seattle Grace, it quickly became apparent who among the staff wasn't happy to have a death row inmate in their hospital. While Meredith took a more empathetic approach to the patient by offering him more morphine to ease his pain when others wouldn't, Cristina and Derek were more steadfast about doing things by the book.

I have to admit, even I felt a bit sorry for William as he lay there on the gurney with a foreign object piercing his spine. Though I never expected to hear that his crime was slitting women's throats for fun. Needless to say, my sympathy for his pain quickly dissipated. However, William's presence this week also uncovered a new story from Derek's past that helped explain his immediate dislike for the prisoner. As it turns out, two guys once shot Derek's father to death because he wouldn't give them his watch, which had been a gift from Derek's mom. After sharing this news with Meredith, Derek poignantly said, "We are supposed to treat everyone the same, but we're not all the same."........more

Grey's Anatomy Preview: Eric Stoltz Discusses His Killer Role - Jan 8, 2009
When Grey's Anatomy resumes its season this Thursday at 9 pm/ET, Seattle Grace's finest will get a collective case of the heebie-jeebies when a death row inmate is admitted with critical injuries. Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction), who occasionally directs for ABC's hit medical drama, steps in front of the camera for the next three episodes to play the enigmatic serial killer. Stoltz gave us a look at the doctor-dividing dilemmas to come.

TVGuide.com: There's a bit of a disconnect between "Eric Stoltz" and "serial killer." One, are you glad there's that disconnect? And two, do you think it helps you bring something different to the role?
Eric Stoltz: [Laughs] Yes, I am happy that I really don't have much in common with killers. Absolutely. But, that being said, it's always bracing to explore what I might actually have in common with them underneath at all. Throughout the course of the day, I do have impulses to lash out at someone or to ram the car that took my parking space or yell at the cab that splashed water on me. But because I'm living in society and want to be a good person, I don't let those impulses out.

TVGuide.com: Is your character, William, remorseful at all?
Stoltz: You think he might have some remorse, but he could also be playing at having remorse, in order to get what he wants. Sociopaths tend to be pretty good actors. Nobody had any idea what Ted Bundy was up to for a long time.

TVGuide.com: To be clear, this story arc isn't about whether William could get loose and go on a rampage in the hospital, but to what lengths the doctors should go to save his life, right?
Stoltz: Either of those [stories] could come to be. You never know, it's [Grey's creator] Shonda Rhimes!

TVGuide.com: Does William's case present divisive moral and ethical dilemmas for the doctors?
Stoltz: Absolutely. When someone on death row is brought to a hospital, doctors are confronted with their own ethical code. "Is it right to save the life of someone who has done so much bad in the world?" "What is a doctor's job and how should one respond to this situation?" It presents a lot of interesting, rich things for all these talented actors to play with.

TVGuide.com: Particularly toward the end of your arc, you have a lot of scenes with Ellen Pompeo. Does William create any sort of drama for Meredith and/or her relationship with Derek?
Stoltz: Yes, I certainly insinuate myself into their relationship and am the source of not a little strife.

TVGuide.com: Is he a charmer despite his "shortcomings"?
Stoltz: I would like to think so!

TVGuide.com: Of course you would. What was it like becoming a part of the very Grey's cast you raved about the last time we spoke?
Stoltz: It was a joy. They didn't hesitate to knock me down a few pegs and remind me that I am no longer directing them.

TVGuide.com: Will there be any sort of body count during your three-episode run?
Stoltz: Uh, possibly!

TVGuide.com: OK, give us one last super-vague tease that won't make Shonda angry.
Stoltz: [Laughs] I've probably already said too much.

Grey's Anatomy: Wish You Were Here - Jan 9th 2009
(S05E11) "Sexed-up stalkers." - Sloan

I thought Grey's Anatomy had gone far enough with the Izzie/Denny mess - until this episode. Why you ask? Because they introduced a doctor who gets around on Heelys!! Do you have any idea how much I hate Heelys? Nine-year-olds come whipping by on those damn things when you're walking around the mall, and as much as you hate to wish bad things upon a 9-year-old, I'm just waiting for the headline "Local Sixth Grader Wearing Heelys Cracks Skull Open in Front of Orange Julius." Oh and that doctor (Dr. Arizona Robbins) that got introduced tonight? She's a pediatric surgeon. Great message to send to the youth of America.
At this point, I've decided to take Webber's approach and not get attached to any new doctors that come through the front doors of Seattle Grace Hospital. No one stays - they all quit! That being said, Dr. Robbins seems like she has a pretty good attitude about things, and I loved how she didn't take any crap from Bailey......there’s more

'Grey's Anatomy': Death Row Medicine- January 08, 09
As good as Grey's Anatomy is when it focuses on the cooperation between the doctors of Seattle Grace, it's often even better when it focuses on the conflict between them. And heavens, there's plenty to go around this week.

For starters, the cold war between Meredith and Cristina is continuing unabated. They're not speaking, and when they do it's tense and even nasty. And of course, they end up working on the same case together, along with Hunt and Derek. A death row inmate, played by Eric Stoltz (who's already directed a couple of episodes this season and shows up again next week), has been beaten and stabbed -- and the shiv is stuck in his spine. The chief wants the guy treated quickly and quietly, and the most interesting part is how it seems to draw battle lines among the four doctors on the case: Derek and Cristina have zero interest in managing his pain or doing anything above the basics, and Meredith and Hunt are more focused on treating the patient rather than just dealing with the case. But despite the amount of pain the guy appears to be in, no more morphine, says Derek................more
