If you are a normal person, one of the few things you can count on in life is death. But, if you are a surgeon, even that comfort is taken away from you. Surgeons cheat death. We prolong it, we deny it. We stand and defiantly give death the finger.

We put things to rest, only to have them rise up again. So if death is not the end, what can you count on anymore? Because you sure can't count on anything in life. Life is the most fragile, unstable, unpredictable thing there is. In fact, there is only one thing about life we can be sure of. It ain't over till it's over.

GUEST STARS

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Brings Denny Back to 'Grey's Anatomy' - Oct 25, 2008
Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning series, 'Grey's Anatomy', gives Jeffrey Dean Morgan another episode for his Denny Duquette on November 6.
“Grey's Anatomy" will bring back a dead guy to television. Dr. Izzie Stevens' fiance, Denny Duquette, who already died on the previous season premiere, will have his other appearance in the series. A source has exclusively reported to EW's Michael Ausiello that Jeffrey Dean Morgan will reprise the role as Denny.

Morgan's comeback as Denny is scheduled to air on November 6 episode. Though NBC refuses to give any statement toward the news, there is a speculation that Denny's return has something to do with Dr. Izzie, who is played by Katherine Heigl. It says that on the episode when Denny appears, Dr. Izzie suffers a brain tumor which makes her able to have a communication with the dead.

Before the news about Morgan's reprise is confirmed, the actor has said on the possibility of him returning to the series. As he said to People in July, "Who knows what's going to happen?"

“Grey’s Anatomy”: Exclusive Casting Scoop! - Oct 31 2008
On the heels of the arrival of a new head of trauma comes word that another fresh face will soon be scrubbing in at Seattle Grace. Jessica Capshaw ("The L Word," "The Practice") will play Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatrician who’s called in to consult on a case and winds up butting heads with Bailey. I hear that Capshaw has signed on for at least three episodes, though that could lead to more, and that she will make her first appearance midway through the season.

Capshaw is the latest actress to sign on for a high-profile Grey’s guest stint. Both "Battlestar Gallactica’s" Mary McDonnell and "Alias’" Melissa George begin their runs in the Nov. 13 episode as a cardiac surgeon with Asperger’s syndrome and a bisexual intern, respectively.

What do you make of this latest casting news? And more importantly, which lusty Seattle Gracer should Dr. Robbins hook up with?? Weigh in below.

SCOOP-AGE & OTHER TRICKSTERS

The Ausiello Files

The Ausiello Files
Rumor Patrol: Is 'Grey's Anatomy' Killing Hahn? Who's Gay Now? Is 'Daisies' Done? Thiessen to '90210?' - Nov 7, 2008
rey's Anatomy is killing off Dr. Hahn! I'm 89 percent certain that's fiction. A promo for next week's episode showing Callie in tears has led some to conclude that her ex-lover, who made her final appearance in last night's episode, will be done in. Highly unlikely. Not sure exactly why Callie was crying though. Maybe she's upset that she had to find out she was a lesbian by reading it in a press release?
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/

---------------------------

Exclusive: 'Grey's Anatomy' Discharges Dr. Hahn - Nov 3, 2008,
UPDATE: Shonda Rhimes has just released the following statement in response to this story: "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/11/brooke-smith-le.html?xid=rss-feed-todayslatest-%27Grey%27s%27+shocker%3A+Dr.+Hahn%27s+gone

The Ausiello Files - October 24, 2008
Time to dust off those brain tumor rumors: Katherine Heigl is seeing dead people again on Grey's Anatomy.

For the second time this season, Jeffrey Dean Morgan's deceased Denny will descend from heaven to have a heart-to-heart with his Earth-bound soul mate, Izzie, sources confirm to me exclusively. ABC declined to comment, but my Grey's mole says Morgan will appear in the Nov. 6 episode.

What brings Denny back this time? I could tell you, but then Shonda Rhimes would kill me and, well, you'd all be up scoop's creek. Instead, I'll leave you with this tantalizing clue: Something happens in the episode that could easily set the stage for a Heigl departure at season's end. I'm not saying it will; only that it could.

The Ausiello Files - Oct 21, 2008
Question: Any good Grey's Anatomy scoop? -- Emily
Ausiello: Yup, and you're gonna want a hanky when it comes to pass, I have a hunch. The show is casting an 8-10-year-old male patient who wants to live but is realistic about his prospects of doing so. (In other words, he's only gonna last three episodes.)

Question: I will give you ten scoops of Smurf ice cream if you can tell me when Cristina's amazingly awesome army doctor is coming back to Grey's Anatomy! -- Brittany
Ausiello: Kevin McKidd returns briefly this Thursday, and then in full force next week. Speaking of air dates, please note that Melissa George's bisexual intern debuts on Nov. 13, not Nov. 6 as I stated last week. In my defense, bisexuality confuses me.

Latest from Kristin - Nov 04, 2008

Linda in West Virginia: I love me some Major Hottie! Will he and Cristina hook up on Grey's?

G.A. is now casting "star names only" for a "former military nurse who is maternal." Might that be...the Major's mom? If so, here's to hoping things go better for Cristina with her than with Burke's badass mamacita Diahann Carroll. 'Cause I'm hearing Cristina most definitely has a "Major" romance coming on!

Ask Matt: Defending Fringe's Joshua Jackson, Continuing the Heroes Debate and More! - Nov 3, 2008
Question: I am confused why some critics have stated that Joshua Jacksonwas miscast in the role of Peter on Fringe. I couldn't disagree more. Joshua is a good actor and Peter has good chemistry with Olivia. If anything they need to give him more to do than just be a babysitter all the time. They are wasting his fine talents, which is hardly his fault. (However, I must say he would have been miscast in the army doctor role over on Grey's Anatomy! He was too young for that role.) And regarding Desperate Housewives, you recently stated that you find Gale Harold's performance "surprisingly charming." What drives me crazy about his addition to the show is that he is totally wasted. Again, another great actor given very little to do except take off his shirt and beg for attention. It's also more than a bit odd watching the former "Brian Kinney" being the whipping boy for Teri Hatcher. As if... And just for the record, I agree with you about Heroes this year. All this time traveling is confusing, especially with regards to Peter. I can't figure out which one he is supposed to be half the time, and I've been a fan since the first episode. However, I like watching Sylar play the good guy — it's amusing. And I must admit to liking My Own Worst Enemy. Perhaps it is because I thought the show would be just plain terrible and surprisingly it isn't. My husband and I enjoy it for what it is. (Plus it is great to get to see Christian Slater on TV every Monday night!) — CB

Matt Roush: I'm not sure who you're reading, but I've got no beef with Joshua Jackson on Fringe. His snarky take on the crisis of the week and John Noble as his cracked dad are the high points of just about every episode. It's Anna Torv's Olivia who, after my strong first impression, I've had trouble warming up to. I'm still trusting the show will work out its kinks and figure out the appropriate mix where all of its primary characters are concerned. (And I have to think that where Grey's Anatomy is concerned, his role would have been conceived way differently from where they've taken it with the terrific Kevin McKidd.) As for Gale Harold: I like the change of pace in making him so sympathetic and vulnerable. He's a supporting player in this ensemble and that's as it should be. We'll be tackling Heroes at length as this week's column continues, but I will say I've had people write in to say I should lighten up where My Own Worst Enemy is concerned. After pre-screening last week's episode, I think I have a better solution. How about I start ignoring it like most of the rest of the world?...............................

Question: I had to agree a bit with Sarah's recent comments, in that I've found myself blah over many of my returning favorites, and I have to wonder if terrific summer shows like The Closer, Eureka, Saving Grace and Mad Men have really upped my expectations. My fall bright spots are quirky shows like Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Chuck. One exception, though: I'm pleasantly surprised by how much Grey's Anatomy seems to have regained its stride this year. It's one of the few traditional dramas that I'm eager to see each week. I was wondering if you'd managed to keep up with the season so far, and if you felt it had regained some of its past luster? — TaMara

Matt Roush: I actually felt Grey's was getting back on track in the episodes after the strike hiatus last season, so haven't had to be won over that much this year. I'm enjoying it quite a bit, Bailey in particular — some things never change — although I grew weary very quickly of Callie's sex obsession/phobia in her new relationship with Erica (the resolution of which, courtesy of McSteamy, was maybe the filthiest bit of sex comedy I've seen this side of Californication this season). Glad that's behind us. And I am very encouraged by the addition of Kevin McKidd, both for romantic (go, Cristina!) and dramatic reasons. So all in all: I'm still a fan.

SIDES & SUMMARIES

Morgue Attendant - Scene 1

INT. MORGUE – DAY

Dr. Smith enters the morgue, a little creeped out. The ATTENDANT hands her the form. She looks it over.

Dr. Smith: What happens to them?

Morgue Attendant: You sign, the attending signs, pink copy goes in his chart.

Dr. Smith: I mean the bodies. The “Unclaimed Bodies.” What happens to them?

Morgue Attendant: Oh. If they remain unclaimed for a certain amount of time, they’re cremated. The ones that haven’t been preserved.

Dr. Smith: Preserved?

Morgue Attendant: For medical research, Gross Anatomy, surgical study, that sort of thing.

Dr. Smith: For, like, med students?

Morgue Attendant: Exactly. For med students.

Dr. Smith: To practice on?

A beat.

Morgue Attendant: You’re pretty.

And Dr. Smith smiles. Trying to be even prettier.

Young Woman - Scene 1

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE VICTIM’S ROOM – NIGHT

Dr. Brown comes out of the Victim’s room to see a policeman escorting a distraught young woman up the hall.

Young Woman: (to the policeman) He’s here?

Dr. Brown stops her outside the victim’s room.

Dr. Brown: He’s your husband?

Young Woman: Yes, can I see him—

Dr. Brown warns her

Dr. Brown: Wait. Please. You want to wait. He was very badly beaten. He’s been fighting very hard, and we’re hopeful.

And she lets her look in the room. And the woman bursts into tears at the sight.

Young Woman: Oh. Oh my God. Why?

Dr. Brown: We don’t know. Maybe he can tell us when he wakes up.

They go in.

______________________________

Paramedic - Scene 1

INT. ER – MORNING

Dr. Smith and Dr. Brown receive a patient from paramedics. The patient is a horrible sigh: an unconscious, bruised and bloody mess of broken limbs, facial lacerations, an eye swollen shut, a shattered jaw. He’s beaten to a bloody pulp

Paramedic: Unidentified male, mid-30's. Unstable pelvis, multiple fractures, both arms, one femur. Medical, medical, medical, facial lacs, possible internal bleeding, medica airway, pulse and B. P. unstable...

Dr. Smith: What doesn’t this guy have?

Paramedic: Found him under a freeway overpass. Cops think someone threw him over.

Dr. Smith: After they beat him half to death.

_____________________________

Alison - Scene 1

INT. CARDIAC ICU – MICHAEL’S ROOM – MORNING

Kristen (Dr. Hahn) and Sarah (Izzie) enter to find Michael Morris, 40, being helped into bed by his wife Alison, 38. Once healthy and athletic, now Mike is frail, weak and breathless.

Mike: Dr. Hahn. Ready to bring the pain?

Kristen: Hi Mike. This sis Dr. Bell. Alison hi....

And to Sarah’s surprise, Kristen hugs Alison.

Kristen: Mike, any questions about the procedure.

Mike: You’re going to give me a heart attack. Literally.

Kristen nods to Sarah.

Sarah: It’s a technique called alcohol ablation. Through a catheter in your femoral artery, Dr. Hahn will inject pure ethanol into your heart. The alcohol will incinerate every piece of tissue cell it touches.

Mike: That sounds like it’ll feel great.

Kristen: It won’t.

She nods to Sarah.

Sarah: We’ll be burning away the skin in your ventricle that prevents your blood from getting enough oxygen. If we’re successful, you should feel instant relief. Like you got a brand new set of lungs.

Mike: Just like that? I’ll be able to breathe?

Kristen: Just like that.

Alison: And he can’t be asleep? During the procedure?

Kristen: I’m afraid not. Dr. Bell will be talking you through it all. She’ll be asking you to cough, inhale and exhale ---

Mike: And checking to see if I’m dead yet?

Alison: Mike, stop.

Mike: I mean it’s like a heart attack, right?

He’s asking with good humor, but he’s really asking.

Kristen: It’s a dangerous procedure. But it’s one we can monitor and control. And if you don’t have it, the next heart attack you have – and there will be a next one ---

Mike: ---- will kill me.

A beat as this sinks in for all of them. Mike jokes with Sarah.

Mike: (to Izzie) Promise you’ll keep me awake for this? I don’t want to miss it.

______________________________

Alison - Scene 2

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE MICHAEL’S ROOM – DAY

Mike’s wife Alison, comes out of the room. In tears.

Alison: He’s decided. He won’t do another procedure. I’m going to check him out.

Alison moves off. Sarah watches her go. But before Kristen can say a word, Sarah walks to Mike’s bedside.

Kristen follows Sarah in.

Kristen: Doctor Bell ----

Mike: She’ll be OK. This has been coming for a long time. We’ve all been preparing. Preparing the girls. She’ll be OK. She’ll move on.

Sarah might be explaining this as much to her as she is to Mike.

Sarah: She loves you. And the only way she’ll live without you — The only thing that will give her any peace at all, is if she knows that both of you tried everything. That she did everything she could to keep you alive.

Mike hears this, moved.

Credit to Taylijane on ABC Spoiler thread.

"There are new sides for 5.07:

Young Woman - distressed, being escorted into "victim's" room by a policeman (no sides for policeman). Dr Brown asks if this is her husband - she confirms. Victims has been badly beaten.

Morgue Attendant - with a female Dr Smith, who has to sign some forms which appear to relate to an unidentified body. Dr Smith seems very inexperienced (may be Lexie). Morgue attendant tells her her thinks she is pretty and appears flattered.

Paramedic - brings in what is probably the later unidentified trauma victim. Dr Smith and Dr Brown are there and comment on the extent of his injuries. He appears alive at this stage but just. The body was found on the freeway.

Alison - wife of Mike (no sides at this stage for Mike - which seems strange). Cardiac ICU - Mike is to undergo a risky procedure on his heart. Kristin (Hahn - they forgot to blank out the names on the script) and Sarah (Izzie). Hahn greets Alison with a hug which surprises Izzie. Hahn knows both Alison and Mike. Mike does not want to go ahead with the procedure and Alison is outside his room upset talking to Izzie/Hahn. Izzie enters Mike's room and tells him that Alison will never have peace unless she know that they did everything to save him.

Wondering if this is when we have the return of dead Denny - Izzie being reminded of the extraordinary lengths she went to get a heart for Denny?

The other cases give no insight into any thing really. Unless Lexie is trying to cope with her feelings for George and he is still oblivious to her interest and she gets a morale boost from the Morgue Attendant.

ETA - someone of at TWoP suggested that Mike may be the guy waiting for transplant that Izzie stole the heart from for dead Denny.

Maybe Izzie feels so guilty she desperately wants Mike to do everything to live not only for his wife but for herself. Hahn would have to know of Izzie's involvement or does she?"

VIDEO - Preview of 'Grey's Anatomy' 5.07: Rise Up - Oct 31, 2008
Izzie has a series of flashbacks of her dead fiance when a patient is treated for similar illness in the new 'Grey's Anatomy'.
The past comes back to haunt Izzie in the new "Grey's Anatomy". The 5.07 episode of the show will see Izzie being tormented when a new patient has similar sickness to her late fiance, Denny Duquette who died on the operation table after a failed heart transplant, and the fact that she is in charge of the case, affects her emotional state.

Meanwhile, the Chief announces to the residents that a solo surgery will be awarded, and the news sends them into a competitive frenzy. Meanwhile Derek turns to Bailey for advice when he feels Cristina is interfering in his relationship with Meredith, and Erica discovers a shocking connection between one of her surgical residents and a longtime patient.

It was previously hinted by EW's Michael Ausiello that Jeffrey Dean Morgan who portrays Denny will be back on the show for the November 6 episode. It wasn't clear whether he will come back as mere flashbacks or in a new scene but it was said that Izzie suffers a brain tumor which makes her able to communicate with the dead, meaning if it's true then he would have shot some new scenes.

PODCAST

Grey's Anatomy Official Podcast: 11/17/08
Published: 11/16/2008
Duration: 27:22
Shonda & Betsy chat about These Ties That Bind as we get ready to plunge into The Midnight Hour (11/20/08 @ 9pm)

The interns start a fight club. Death and Die reunite. And Denny is back, kind of. All that and more on the special double sized edition of the official Grey’s Anatomy podcast.

Hello everyone and welcome back. We may have been gone for a week but that’s okay because executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers are here with us to gush about the last two episodes, Rise Up and These Ties That Bind which means a whole lotta talk about a whole lotta things, including Denny, Denny and more Denny. They’ll also hint out what happens in our next episode, In the Midnight Hour, which airs this coming Thursday November 20th at 9 p.m. on ABC and is available the next day at abc.com. Here now are Shonda and Betsy.

Hi, hello, it’s Betsy and Shonda and this is Grey’s Anatomy. Grey’s Anatomy. Wow it’s been a little while, it’s been a little while. We haven’t actually done this for a for a couple weeks, have we? We’ve been kinda busy. We’ve been kinda busy, making shows, running around making shows. Occasionally eating lunch. And voting. By the way we voted! We voted! And look what happened! Look what happened! There’s some voting, there’s some change. And democracy occurred in a great ways and places and which is really pretty incredible and there was a better turnout ever than in history of like since Lincoln or something crazy. Which I like to take credit for. So if anybody has stories about meeting cute guys at the polls. Did you meet any cute guys at the polls Shonda? I did, but then after having a long conversation then a woman showed up and it turn out to be his wife. It was awkward. And by the way if there are recounts or revotes in any of your states don’t forget to vote. Vote more. Vote often. As much as you can.

So we were busy voting. And you were busy writing like a maniac, so we didn’t have a chance to talk to you about Rise Up, which I think was just a phenomenal episode. Yeah, this is the episode where Erica Hahn faced with her patient who lost a heart to Denny Duquette ends up walking away from the hospital. It’s this horrible moment that you sorta realize with Izzie when the patient shows up, I remember when I first read the script I dawned on me on the same pace it dawned on Izzie who this guy was. This sort of horrible haunting moment of actually facing this horrible thing from the past and also the first time you really, really understand the investment that Hahn had in this guy because she was actually willing to take down the whole hospital in order to defend her patient. The episode called Rise Up for a reason. I love that all these old issues rise up metaphorically and literally Denny is walking down the hallway. And its great to sort of have those moments there and then have it come alive.

See Denny again is just pretty great but also slightly creepy. Slightly creepy. What’s he wearing? What’s he wearing? You know, if you watch the show carefully when Denny died he was wearing a hospital gown. When he came back to talk to Meredith in season 3 he was wearing black sweat pants and t-shirt and I think like flipflops or something which he found uncomfortable. I believe that’s correct. And so when he came back this time, he said “Can I change my clothes”? At first I said no. And then he made kind of a charmingly compelling argument for why he should be able to change his clothes. Because he’s the one that pointed out to me he died in a hospital gown it’s not like he’s walking around in the clothes he died in, he obviously changed his clothes after Meredith drowned herself, like where’d he get those clothes. He’s like, “Come on, a guy can change his clothes every once in a while.” And it was very sweet and very compelling and he hugged me when he asked and so I let him change his clothes. On a side note I can add to this is, he wouldn’t even have to ask, he just has to stand there and make Denny eyes at you and the bottom line is you would have put him in a divers suit if he asks for it is my guess. I tried to find a way to get him in a tuxedo because I always thought oh my god!. I really want to see Denny in formal wear. That was your marriage fantasy. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a person, a human being, lovely person not necessarily Denny, not Denny, shares many lovely characteristics, which is he is kind and funny and charming and great to be around and loves his dog. With is a good thing by the way. And I want to clear that I am not in any way stalking him, as you guys can report to the judge later. So this is on record that there is nothing untoward going on. Absolutely not.

Well I had to ask that because that was indeed something we talked about. Stalking? Yes, we always talk about stalking. Or formal wear or his clothes? Stalking people in formalwear. His clothes were a big deal. It was very interesting trying to figure out what he would be wearing and we tried to come up with something that felt like it reminded you of his clothes because we’ve only seen him in clothes, actual clothes a couple of times, it reminded you of his clothes but it wasn’t his clothes but he also looked good in it. But it also felt a little bit magically which is, you know cashmere always works, if your trying to feel magical at home apparently. By the way think of that for gift giving. If you ever want to actually elevate somebody’s magic, buy cashmere. And he looks yummy but also to some degree it’s the way Izzie’s imagining him or seeing him. Whatever you believe. And you can believe either one. Because she is clearly seeing him and it doesn’t seem like anybody else is seeing him. I always like to talk about this and for the record from now on I’m gonna talk about this from Izzie’s perspective because it just makes it easier to stop, for me to not sit and wonder what he is, as much the fact that Izzie see him makes him real, nobody else sees him which is the problem, that’s an issue. But she see him and so for her those are the clothes that she sees him in, the clothes she imagined him wearing. You do sort of say, “Can he leave the hospital?”, he seems to be hanging around with the operations. You start to feel like you’re not sure. And the progression of the first episode is that he’s just appearing and he’s around and he’s not speaking and it’s very scary, I mean not scary but “What’s going on?” and maybe she just having visions of him or having flashes of him in her head and at the end of the episode he speaks, which we love.

And then the next episode after that, These Ties That Bind, he’s speaking and he’s with her and he’s hanging out and she’s really trying to ignore him and try and find a way for him to go away but we never see him outside the hospital until the very end when he’s in her bedroom, which is another step forward. After she burns the sweater. Which is also to crossover to both episodes is I love the entire story with the Indian and the heart because I find it incredibly moving that this guy at a particular moment totally sees and realizes she got a ghost and the ghost is in the room and she’s desperately trying to figure out and answer for what the hell is going on and that time this guy comes with the entire heart and he has the heart taken out and the heart is beating, which there is no medical explanation but there is a medical explanation for, is such a great combination of events. And the progression of Denny basically starting with just seeing, talking, touching you can only hope what else happens I think.

The other things that was interesting to me about Rise Up was Lexie and her gathering of corpses, what I loved about it is was great and funny and all of our characters have that great lunchroom scene where they’re working on those corpses and they’re eating salad and they’re talking about stuff and they’re treating the corpses like nothing. And you feel like there nothing, like as an audience member you’re sort of like, “It’s funny, they’re eating salad over the corpses”. Until see poor Ed and Rosie the older couple where the husband won’t stop pumping the heart and she dies and then Bailey finds those corpses just lying about with food dishes on top them and says “ Each one of these people was somebody’s somebody”. And I love that moment that you come to realize the things that you take for granted and I wanted it to be that way for us. I mean at home we don’t normally take corpses for granted, I certainly don’t and I don’t think you do. But if you were a surgeon you would and I thought it was very interesting to take something and make it feel light and funny and really humanize it in that way was lovely. And well then turn around and like the interns we have paid any attention to them and I felt as bad when Bailey yelled at me as when she yelled at the interns because I wasn’t paying attention to the corpses.

The whole storyline of Ed and Rosie I find that so incredibly moving and I think for Derek and for Bailey it has different kinds of resonance. For Derek to actually see a couple that has endured this long that loves each other like this. It’s so much about, it’s a marathon not a sprint. It‘s so much about his future and the way he wants to feel. And the tolerance involved of you know Meredith on the phone in the middle of the night with Cristina reading the Harry Potter books, that are her mother’s journals. But I love that because its feels sweet and I love his fix, which is so boy. To go to Mark Sloan. If I could just get her involved with someone else, perhaps I could have my girlfriend all to myself. Just for the record, the worst possible pairing, kind of in the history of television to me, is Cristina and Mark Sloan. Which made it so funny. Which is so great. And she has no idea what he is doing. She is kryptonite to all of his powers. He is not even good at flirting with her really. Cause she’s just not giving him to go on or anything to work from, she’s like a wall for him. And I love the moment that she realizes that he flirting on her and its sort of ridiculous.

Also just for the record Ed and Rosie, Rosie is played by Bonnie Barlett, that’s a little bit of a nod to St. Elsewhere, which is a show that I think is phenomenal and we all love over here. She was of course was William Daniels wife and is in real life and did a phenomenal job as did George Cough who has done a bunch of stuff including Private Practice and is a phenomenal actor and I just think it he is a wonderful actor. We’re really, really lucky here sometimes cause we get this quality of performer and every once in a while we get these people we just gigantically admire who we get to work with. This was a couple that we were totally psyched to have here too. Kinda of a nice shout out to them as well.

What about the dummy?.... that we actually broke. Let me just say for the record, that dummy, Stan was played by and actual medical simulation dummy called iStan a wildly expensive piece of machinery that did all the things that iStan did and probably did them better and probably would have continued to do them better for some medical school or some medivac training program or some trauma program. But Stan wasn’t really ready for television, he was an awesome piece of equipment but I don’t think he was meant to be used in sort of the brutalizing way that he was used. Which is to redo that procedure 58 times! I think we also drowned him in fake blood because basically Stan bled more than any human being would actually bleed, so we kept adding blood. I’m not assigning any blame should the iStan people be listening to us, maybe we didn’t have anything to do with him drowning in blood. Maybe actually there nothing wrong with him, just perception. And if you guys feel like you might want to buy an iStan I highly recommend it, he’s kind of awesome. There great to have around the house and by the way if you’re alone. I endorse him, I totally totally do. Sit across iStan at dinner. But we totally killed that doll. We did. We killed him. But I thought the story line was hilarious and we had a lot of fun with the idea that Richard was the man behind the curtain. The powerful Oz. Yeah, and we worked on that voice which is actually four voices melded together to make the voice of iStan forever. And I love Owen’s whole figuring it out that it’s Richard, the whole conversation in front of George. And poor George who just quietly throughout the entire episode is just carving away at iStan to make sure that he can actually fix something. And he’s very funny.

I have two favorite moments in the episode. One of them is Owen and Cristina, when Owen basically yells at her “did you even bother to find out the patients name” and Cristina closes the door and tells him how her father died. Yep. Cause he says you know “is that all you care about is winning contests?” And she tells him how her father died and she says that’s why she’s good at her job, that’s why she wants to be a heart surgeon and that’s why she wins all the contests. And it’s such a beautiful moment and then she leaves the room and Owen calls her a single malt scotch, which I loved and it’s one of the reason why I love Owen deeply in a deeply stalkery way. I am stalking Owen. Not stalking Denny, I am stalking Owen. So the to do list of stalkeringg I was gonna have to switch out, cause if you’re already stalking him I gotta find somebody else to stalk. God I hate this part.

So the other favorite moment of the episode is where Erica and Callie in the end of the episode. When Erica says to her “You can’t kind of help people, you can’t kinda be a lesbian” which is a thing which has been bubbling under the surface ever since she in the last episode when she told her story about leaves and “I’m gay, I’m gay, I’m so, so gay” which I thought was one of the most beautiful I’ve seen Erica Hahn do. And so when we got to this point when she says “You can’t kind of be a lesbian” and Callie says “Yes I can” you understand the fundamental problem is between them. And it’s incredibly painful and I just think for Erica Hahn everything is in black and white and I think the point that you come to at the end of this episode is this is a world of grey .... no pun intended. But I also think in just a fundamental way she went through this enormous change, she figured out something and a lightbulb came on and I think its got to be really terrifying and upsetting that you take this journey and you turn to the person who you took this journey with and they’re basically saying “ I don’t know” “I didn’t take this journey, I’m still back there, you’re all alone” which is really frustrating. And when you finally have that kind of clarity it’s incredibly angering too. Yeah, I really felt bad for Erica in that moment cause it was really heartbreaking for me. I feel incredibly sympathetic towards her with the heart patient and I understand the entire issue and how deeply she felt about it. I think her heart was broken on a number of levels. I mean her faith in the hospital based on Richard. She couldn’t walk through those doors again because every single thing she believed to be true wasn’t. And because I think she has a particular clarity of vision, she know what she thinks about things and she’s surrounded by people who don’t. Who were constantly debating, when she clearly knows right from wrong. And in her head what those rules are. It’s an incredibly sad moment and also in a weird way liberating for her because she actually took a stand as to what she believed and in this world of waffling, when you think of this woman who started the season by being accused of she’s being a terrible teacher, trying to figure out a way to teach, being incredibly frustrated every turn of the way, it just feels as though Seattle Grace would be a very, very difficult place for her to be. And also they’re number 12, and she thinking there’s someplace better. And I love how it comes around in the end in next episode in These Ties That Bind for Callie who sort of goes through saying “I’m fine” and gets that moment where she’s been holding it all in and holding it all in and holding it all in and then the guy whose bones she’s been building dies and she just loses it. And the two people that stayed behind are Cristina and Sloan there’s something incredibly moving. And one of my favorite moments is when Cristina says “Why don’t you guys leave we’ve got it from here” and then Sloan says it and then Owen screams “Get out!” to everybody for which some reason, it’s amazing because the penny finally drops and you also see how much Callie did care. You really feel how much Callie cared and how this sort of unresolved quality for Callie I think is she thought she could kind of resolve all the problems by building a mans legs. She could throw herself into her work and everything would be fine, she wouldn’t have to think about it. There’s faith in fixing things and there’s just some things that couldn’t be fixed and that’s tragedy of the relationship for her.

How about Death and Die? Death and Die. We named Sadie, we came up with the character, we named Sadie, we talked about in the room, we had millions of discussions about Sadie and it wasn’t until three days later I sat up in the middle of the night and I was like “Their names are Death and Die!” and felt really good about it. Because you have this relationship with somebody which you are a totally different person at a certain point in your life. Totally. And you have these different nicknames, and everybody calls Mer, Mer, like that’s her name. I love that Cristina says “Her name’s not Death! it’s Mer” which is ridiculous. But it’s that thing that you have this whole relationship where you are this whole tequila drinking, bar hopping kind of girl which what Meredith was in those days. Yep. And that’s how Sadie knows her and Sadie knows her as they were Death and Die. See and what I love is that Meredith is a serial best friender. I don’t think Cristina was, so the thing is when Cristina see Sadie show up, it’s a phenomenal affront to Cristina because meets her life and Meredith survives. Which means you go to places, you bond, it doesn’t make the bond any less deep, its just Meredith is a survivalist. That is what she’s always been. And I think on a very basic level it’s just crushing for Cristina.

I also I’ve got to say I love this whole whacko thing which is going on with A. how crazy Lexie is, cause Lexie last week stole a bunch of cadavers. And we established last season she steals things. She’s a kleptomaniac, but also the weird thing is she is a wild card, she’s a loose cannon. You think she’s one thing and she’s another. She’s off the rails sometimes, she way more hard core. This whole idea that these interns are in a room cutting each other and practicing stitches which by the way is based on fact. It’s based on stories we were told by some doctors who shall remain nameless. But apparently this is something that in desperation some people do. But what I love about this season is that it’s all about a number 12 teaching hospital because nobody’s teaching. So here we get to episode 7 and 8 and what becomes clear, is that even though Richard is under the impression they’re building up the teaching hospital and this whole idea of the teaching hospital by bringing in .... Everybody is busy being out for themselves that the interns are left to teach themselves.

They bring in Dr. Dixon whose a whole other issue. That was actually amazing because when we came up with the character I kept saying wouldn’t it be great if Mary McDonnell could play this character. And I kept saying it’s a heart surgeon with Asperger’s and it will be really interesting because what I loved about the idea was there are many parts of Asperger’s that suggest there is a lot of impairment social interaction but part of that impairment social interaction that makes it possible that you can spend time reading people’s emotional queues also makes it possible for you to focus incredibly well on details and facts and things and such things as rules. Which you can see that kind of person would be a flawless surgeon, maybe not so good with patients or other doctors but a flawless surgeon because part of you learns better because you’re not bothered by all the emotional queues going on in your life that make all the rest of us spend time wondering how people feel about us. Or have we been nice enough or should we be sharing our scalpel with somebody else. It’s the elimination of strategy too, because there’s no strategizing, so she simply about the objective.... following the objective and reaching the objective. And which there’s that whole beautiful speech about hearts, and then you look at her because she’s all in red which I have always noticed that just popped. She’s in this amazing red coat and intense red hat because she loves the color and she loves the ventricles and she love the fact there’s all these explanations. And McDonnell came to the role with a phenomenal level of... I mean she had done all this research and she so wanted to play the character in a true way. And she wanted to make sure she honored the Asperger’s community and she really felt strongly about it. We had lots of discussion about what this character was and what the mannerisms were and one of the things that ended up happening was we were trying to figure out the character and she had this red coat and I said she should have a little red hat, kinda like a little girl, wearing a lot of the same clothes.... she has her comfort levels. And so she has her coat and red hat that are adorably sweet but are a little bit strange on a grown woman. When she first make the entrance, the impact because nobody know her and everyone is excited to meet her and this woman walks in looking like Little Red Riding Hood. It’s hysterical but she felt it was oddly comforting to her because it’s sort of like her armor, how come when she operates you’ll notice that her entire head is covered in a thing whereas everyone else just wears their surgical cap, her entire head is covered in like this tent like thing. Which is more isolating and makes her feel safe. So it was really interesting talking to her and figuring out those ideas and how that character was going to work. And I love the moment when she just shames Bailey, cause you rarely see Bailey get shamed like that. It was sort of phenomenal to watch Bailey’s face as Dr. Dixon exits the elevator and says “I don’t think I like this hospital at all”.

Intern Fight Club. Intern Fight Club, they got some issues don’t you think. I would say maybe a little bit. I’m a little worried about the injection of Sadie into that bloody world.... I don’t think Sadie’s helping, I’m going to be blunt. I think Die not helping at all. I would say the Die is a little bit of a loose cannon. I’m actually thinking the mixture of Die and Lexie is really potent and horrifying. Exactly. Cause it looks to me like Die will do anything and is fearful of nothing which is both intoxicating to watch and really troubling because this hospital is already on the brink of disaster and yet you entered in this character who clearly has seemingly has no fear of authority, offending people or danger or pain. The moment in which she actually cuts herself and every single guy in the room raises his hand. It was great. And Lexie actually looks pissed. Because Ryan, the actor who plays Ryan ad libs a line that we thought was so great we kept it in the show, which was “Right here!”

Also one of my most favorite things about the episode at the very, very end Meredith agrees to tell Derek the story, one of the stories of Death and Die, but they don’t tell us. Which we love, which is great. We talked a lot about it in the writer’s room, what should the story be, what should the story be and I told this story in the writer’s room about what it was and we decided we were never gonna tell the audience. Because it made it juicer to not know and whatever you put in you head what you imagined would probably be more interesting than whatever we said. Probably, but you do have something in your head. Yeah, one day maybe we’ll tell you, yeah, you never know. That’s happened before. There are things that you actually have in the back of you head that you say you’ll never ever tell and you might end up telling. Yeah like, with Meredith and her mom. I save things, when I need them. You may be surprised in ways that you have no idea. It’s always a crapshoot.

And my other favorite moment is the kiss between Cristina and Owen in the alley outside the bar. Oh dude. My god. Come on, I mean there’s nothing you can say about that, that’s just ridiculous. What I love about it, it starts out feeling a little bit violent and little bit dangerous in a way that’s maybe not so good. (To Shonda..... this from a woman who’s actually a stalker, is actually pretty good.) In a way that make you a little bit worried about Cristina’s safety. And she’s a tiny little thing and you realize in that alley, he’s a big guy. And she’s a tiny little thing and she’s formidable but not with him somehow. He’s.... he’s Heathcliff, standing on moors and he’s fabulous. That moment to me is like this person who is totally in charge, this woman who is totally directed and focused and totally having to give up control. If anybody else had done that to her, she not only would not have kissed them back she would have kicked the crap out of them when it was over. There’s something about Owen that needs some taking care of. Yup. That she sees in a way that nobody else sees. Owen is like this hurt little bird that needs some taking care of and in a weird way by the time he comes away from that kiss he’s so much weaker than she is and she’s has all the power and so she just walks away. Which I love. We can analyze this to death but come on it’s just hot, yeah it’s just hot.

The next episode is called In the Midnight Hour. I love this episode, this is what I’m gonna say about this episode. This episode is so incredibly good and so incredibly haunting that there’s a lot more there than meets the eye and everybody’s gonna get pushed. That’s a really good way of putting it. There’s a lot happens in this episode, a lot more happens than you ever expect. I think this is one of those crucial episodes to watch in real time. You don’t want to actually be behind in this episode. You want to sit and watch it on the television you have in front of you because .... it’s really good. So that’s pretty much it for us. Shonda’s gonna go off to her secret stalking position and I going to go try and find something else to do. This is Shonda, this is Betsy. This is Grey’s Anatomy

EPISODE RECAP

Izzie and Meredith are assigned to assist Erica with a heart patient and Izzie is distraught when she realizes who the man is. "That's the heart I stole for Denny," she tells Meredith. The fact that the patient is in Denny's old room makes it even worse. "That's a lot of Denny," Meredith admits, but she isn't seeing him walking the hallways, like Izzie is. Izzie's duty during an experimental procedure -- during which the patient will be awake -- is to talk the man through the excruciating pain he's experiencing. Erica selected her because of her ability to bond with patients, but Izzie is seeing Denny in the O.R. and can't breathe. "I'm so sorry," she says and runs out.

Meredith reveals that Izzie's connection to Denny Duquette, a name Erica knows all too well as she was the surgeon who performed the surgery.

Derek is annoyed with Cristina for her late-night chats with Meredith, which rob him of sleep, so he has a favor to ask of Mark. "I need you do have sex with Cristina Yang. Distract her." Mark declares her "unfun" and "not my type," but Derek reminds him. "You slept with my wife," and Mark sighs and says, "Yeah, I'll give it a shot." Mark tries his best, but Cristina laughs when she realizes he's been unsuccessfully flirting with her all day.

The residents are abuzz when they learn that the winner of the skills lab will be awarded a solo surgery. George gets stuck with "Stan," a robotic patient who can talk about his symptoms, much to his frustration as the robot says things like, "I can't believe you passed your intern exam!" George is finally triumphant in saving Stan's life but not sure how to feel when he realizes he's been verbally abused by Richard, who's been providing Stan's voice, all day.

Lexie is upset to find other interns practicing insert IVs on each other, but when she realizes that the unclaimed cadavers in the morgue are often donated for students to learn on, she seizes the opportunity. "Bow to me, for I am the queen of the interns," she tells her jealous colleagues. "I have assembled an army of the dead to teach us." But Alex and Cristina overhear and insist on taking the cadavers for their own.

Richard wants Owen's input on who should be awarded the solo surgery. "You don't have any history, any relationship with anyone. That perspective is rare," he says. Owen asks Callie for her input and after she rattles off her complicated personal history with all the residents, he tells her he wanted to know about their medical skills.

Owen tells Richard he finds the residents, "Undisciplined and inarticulate. I'm not sure I want to stay."

When Miranda finds a room full of corpses that have been opened up, Lexie tries to explain that they were unclaimed and an outraged Miranda insists, "We claim them. We owe them respect."

Cristina is convinced that Owen hates her, especially after he chews her out for trading procedures with Alex on a badly beaten homeless man. Owen orders them to step away from the patient. "You have no decency, no respect!" he shouts. He tells Cristina that if she's practicing medicine just to win competitions, she has no place being here. In response, she tells him why she became a doctor: when she was nine years old she sat with her dying father after a car accident and felt his heart stop. "This is why I'm' here," she says.

Earlier, Owen had overheard Derek telling Mark that Cristina was a "single malt scotch," but a frustrated Mark pronounced her a "bad wine." After Cristina leaves, an impressed Owen murmurs, "Single malt scotch."

Erica is enraged to find out the part Izzie played in Denny's acquiring the heart intended for her patient and storms into Richard's office. "My patient lost a heart over this. It is damn well going to be investigated." Richard tells her not to stir up the past, so instead, she orders a guilt-ridden Izzie to sit with the patient through another difficult procedure and face up to her responsibility for his situation. Izzie commits to talking him through the pain this time, under Denny's approving eye. After the procedure is a success, she looks up and Denny is no longer there.

Erica tells Callie she intends to report Izzie to a medical review board and is shocked when Callie sides with Izzie and Richard. "There is no gray area here," Erica insists. "You can't kind of side with Izzie Stevens. And you can't kind of be a lesbian. I don't know you at all," she says, and walks away.

Bill Harper On "Rise Up"...

Original Airdate: 11-6-08

Since this week’s episode has much to do with dead people who won’t stay dead, I thought it might be appropriate to start with a story about some dead people:

When I was a teenager, I visited my sister at college, where she was studying to be a physical therapist. She told me to meet her in a lab, and (purposefully, I think) gave me zero advanced warning that what I’d be walking into was a gross anatomy lab -- a room full of dead bodies. Surprise. Ha. Good one. I went through what must be the Five Stages of Seeing Unexpected Corpses: 1. Shock, 2. Revulsion, 3. Unease, 4. Gnawing concern about the fragility of my life, 5. Worry for this dead stranger in front of me, curiosity about how he got here, why he wasn’t buried, who his family was, how his hands got so calloused... Anyway, lots and lots of feelings, and all in about four seconds. Plus, the smell was weird. But suddenly, I swear, all of it was replaced with one feeling: Fascination. As four students worked over the open stomach cavity of a grey-green male cadaver, I was struck by how quickly it became just that to me -- a body, not a person. I felt like I understood the detachment that doctors must need to do their jobs. The ability to save lives -- and the daily threat of losing them -- must be enough to paralyze you if you don’t detach a little. If you don’t de-personalize.

(Sorry, I know I’m already sort of well into this blog, but I feel this weird, nagging impulse to introduce myself, since we haven’t met. I’m Bill...longtime fan, first-time writer, first episode of Grey’s, first blog. Ever. Hi. Very happy to meet you.)

That detachment shows up all over in this episode. The first Solo Surgery’s about to be awarded, it’s a huge deal, a huge honor, so our doctors are fired up to learn, to prepare, to win it -- and their interns are being neglected by their teachers -- everyone’s getting a little crazed, a little...detached.

Lexie assembles her league of unclaimed bodies. But Alex literally body-snatches them and pretty soon all of the residents are using them. And I mean using them. They’re so consumed with practicing procedures (and, in some cases, their lunch) they lose track of the fact that these are actual people they’re cutting into. Of course, it takes Bailey to snap them back, to demand for these bodies the respect they deserve. Sadly, it all lands on poor Lexie, who, from the beginning was the only person who showed those cadavers anything like respect. (I love her little speech thanking them for being there). No wonder she joins her basement band of self-doctoring interns.

Meanwhile, George works heroically away on his “patient.” Stan (played by iStan -- truly the most amazing, state-of-the-art trauma patient simulator there is out there). The idea behind these simulators is that they can create a scenario so realistic that doctors actually feel the stress of a real-life trauma. And by the end Stan becomes more of a person than he has a right to be (thanks partly to the Chief).

The poor beating victim, on the other hand, becomes less than human. Alex and Cristina have turned him into a grab bag of procedures to practice on, losing track of the person to the point where Owen completely snaps. Owen, ironically, has spent the entire day trying to depersonalize himself. He’s fighting so hard to not connect, to keep it professional, to keep Cristina at arm’s length. It must be a reaction to what we learned last week - losing his entire unit, being the sole survivor. If anyone ever wanted to detach, if anyone wanted to flee from being human, it’s Owen. And it builds in him all day, until it explodes.

I think my favorite scene might be the one when Cristina finds Owen and realizes maybe the only way to break through, to really communicate, after learning of his tragedy, is to tell him this incredibly intimate story of her own. Sometimes the most tragic and defining experiences can create a shorthand between people. They just understand it in a way that no one else would. (OK. I’m flat-out fascinated by Owen and Cristina. They seem to skip steps that most of us have to go through when we meet someone. They’re all surprise kissing and tragic-life-story-trading. No small talk, really. I can’t wait to see what happens next between them.)

So, the doctors must detach, but as Bailey and Owen point out, you can’t let the Person become nothing but The Patient. Everybody is “somebody’s somebody.” This peculiar opportunity that doctors have to cross the line between life and death and back again -- well, it would make me crazy. For most of us, Death is the finish line. For surgeons, it can be just another hurdle.

And death isn’t the end for a lot of people in this episode. Meredith and Cristina learn that, unearthing all those diaries of Ellis’s, trading them like best-sellers, learning from her brilliant past.

There’s poor Mr. Bullard who’s so prepared for his wife’s death after such a long illness, only to find that, when it comes down to it, he’s not prepared at all. He has to bring her back. And poor Bailey, who’s obviously working so hard to keep her own marriage alive, and sees the ideal of what she’s after in the Bullards. To stop trying to save her, to stop working, to give up on the ideal goes against every instinct she has, as a doctor and as a person.

But come on. If were going to talk about people coming back from the dead. If we’re talking resurrections...Come on...

Picture this: You’re a fan of the show. Then the dream of a lifetime comes true and you get to work on the show. It’s your first episode, and Shonda says to you: “This is the one where Denny comes back.”

He is, as Callie says, Seattle Grace Legend. And his re-appearance opens a whole can of worms: People forget that’s how we met Erica Hahn. I admit, ever since Erica Hahn showed up for her first day of work I’d wondered, in the back of my mind, how much she knew of what went on here the night of that heart transplant. I knew if she didn’t know, and she found out, it would blow up. And it does -- In one day her whole world is rocked. Her work, this hospital, her relationship, nothing is what it seemed. Upside-down. And poor Callie is playing catch-up. Not knowing where it’s going. Or where Erica’s going.

And Izzie. Poor Izzie. It is, as Meredith says, a lot of Denny for one day. But she figures there must be a reason that her patient -- Denny’s former rival for the transplant heart -- is here, (played by Tom Verica, an amazing actor, who, you may notice, frequently directs our show as well) and that he’s in Denny’s old room. And that Denny is wandering the hallways! And staring at her with his big, sad Denny eyes. This must be how she can finally, once and for all, can lay him to rest. Right? I love how her fear and concern over seeing her dead boyfriend, there...in the room, is replaced with that incredible, final sadness of realizing that he’s not. That he’s gone. Gone for good.

Or is he? Denny...seems to have other plans. As for what happens next between them, I can’t say. I can just say this...

...It’s not over yet.

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.7 "Rise Up" Recap - November 06, 2008
Tonight's Grey's Anatomy opens with Meredith's voiceover musing about death, a common occurrence on Grey's Anatomy, actually. It's early morning and Cristina (Sandra Oh) wakes Meredith up by calling to discuss Ellis' old diaries, which are the Harry Potter books Cristina never had. Derek (Patrick Dempsey), who enjoys not getting woken up by a phone call at the butt crack of dawn, is annoyed to no end by Cristina. Later on at the hospital, Derek asks Mark (Eric Dane) to seduce Cristina to keep her occupied.
Everyone is late for work today, even Bailey who is arguing with Tucker about marriage counseling.
Don't Miss
In skills lab, Richard introduces the residents to STAN, a state of the art animatronic robot for the residents to practice on. Operating on STAN will help Richard decide on which of the second-year residents will get to do their first solo surgery. Of course, the news of solo surgeries whips all the residents into a competitive frenzy to see who will get the first one. Just another day at Seattle Grace. Richard (James Pickens Jr.) asks Major McHottie (Kevin McKidd) to observe the residents to help him decide....................there’s more

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy- Rise Up - 2008-11-07
All of the press and hype around tonight's episode has been about either Izzy having to face the consequences of her decision to sneak Denny up on the heart transplant list (the season before last) and the very abrupt departure of Brooke Smith (Erica Hahn) from the show. Not too surprisingly, the two stories were intertwined in tonight's episode.

I'd forgotten that it was Hahn's patient that was supposed to get the heart that ended up going to Denny in season two. Tonight, we meet the patient and he hasn't been doing so well. Erica is determined to help him now after having to let him and his wife down so many times before, most recently with the loss of the heart that Izzie stole. I didn't really completely understand the procedure, but it seems to basically consist of inserting alcohol into the man's ventricles in order to burn off muscle impairing his ability to breathe. Yeah, it didn't make sense to me, either..........cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': You've Got To Have Heart - Nov 7, 2008
Seattle Grace's newest top docs shine a light on its biggest problem, and one of them decides she really won't put up with it
Welcome to the Erica Hahn Memorial Grey's Anatomy Recap. Yes, this was apparently the last episode for our favorite prickly lesbian cardio surgeon...they sure do know how to scare off the cardio geniuses around Seattle Grace, don't they? Ah, well, we'll be getting a brand new one (Mary McDonnell) straight from Battlestar Galactica in the coming weeks, not to mention a brand new bisexual, played by Melissa George. Nonetheless, I count Brooke Smith as an unnecessary loss — regardless of whether producers were simply over her story or the network was uncomfortable with all the graphic lesbianic talk. Sure, Hahn could be harsh, but I liked that she kept the spazzy Seattle Gracers in line — no better indicated than in this episode...........cont’d

‘Grey’s’ says goodbye to Dr. Hahn’ - Nov 6, 2008
Her abrupt departure isn't the week's weirdest development, either
Welcome the TauntBot 3000: With a competition underway to decide who would get to perform a solo surgery, everyone wanted practice, and no one could figure out how to get it. The Chief offered up a robot that they could operate on, but that wound up being a cruel prank that ended with the Chief speaking through the robot, telling George, “I can’t believe you even passed your intern test.”

Looking for a few warm bodies: The interns needed practice, too, and Lexie thought practicing IV placement on each other was “creepy-basement crazy.” So she sought something less creepy-basement crazy, which turned out to be, naturally, charming ill-gotten corpses out of the guy at the morgue. Unfortunately for Lexie, the bossy residents wanted practice, too, and they eventually took over, making it into a dissection free-for-all. The fun stopped when Bailey walked in and, appalled, ordered them to stop mistreating dead bodies. ...........cont’d

Grey's Anatomy new intern, Sadie Harris may remind you of somebody else. No not Izzie Stevens although talk is heating up that disgruntled Katherine Heigl will be allowed to exit the series at seasons end. Melissa, who signed a multi-year deal with the ABC drama, describes her character as "naughty and "mischievious" and says she has a lot in common with Angelina Jolie. As for Heigl's possible exit, "I don't know who's moving on," says Melissa, who debuts November 13, "but sometimes five years on a show may be enough for some people. Shonda Rhimes is so clever. She knows exactly what she's doing. It's smart to bring in new life"

Additional TV Guide blurb on Lexie:
Lexie Grey is the unlikely ringleader of a secret society of Grey's Anatomy interns who operate on each other for experience. "This is like an intern's fight club." Chyler Leigh tells me. The arrival of Melissa's reckless Sadie ups the risk factor in Lexie's underground procedures until there are "some serious ramifications for the hospital," teases Betsy Beers. Later in the season, Lexie feels the love when Meredith softens her attitude toward her little sis, Derek takes a paternal stance and boozy patriarch Thatcher likely returns.

Exclusive: Multi-Episode Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice Crossover Is in the Works - Nov 6, 2008
Talk about a delicate operation.
Sources tell TVGuide.com exclusively that ABC powerhouse Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off, Private Practice, will be embarking on a multi-episode crossover story come February sweeps.
Though at this very early stage the number of episodes and the sum total of actors involved has yet to be nailed down, it can at least be confirmed that Kate Walsh's Dr. Addison Montgomery will again be walking the halls of Seattle Grace, as she did for one episode last spring (several months after Private Practice made its debut).
Grey's Anatomy is currently in its fifth season on ABC. The concept for Private Practice first emerged in the form of a back-door pilot/May 2007 episode of Grey's in which Addison ventured to Los Angeles to catch up with gal pal Naomi (originally played by Alias' Merrin Dungey, but quickly recast with Audra McDonald).
Who from Seattle Grace might show their pretty face at Oceanside Wellness? When I interviewed Walsh just a few weeks ago, she cast her vote for Eric Dane's Mark Sloan, saying, "It'd be fun to have him cause some trouble!" That said, the actual laundry list of crossing over cast members from each show, outside of Walsh, has yet to be confirmed.

Grey's Actress "Really, Really Shocked" by Ouster from Show - Nov 3, 2008
It is the worst and last news that "Callica" fans expected to hear. But the fact is that Brooke Smith, who first appeared as Grey's Anatomy's Dr. Erica Hahn in May 2006, has been abruptly let go from the show - just as her lesbian storyline with Sara Ramirez's Callie was taking off. Ironically, series creator Shonda Rhimes broke the news to Smith in mid-September, just after the actress had filmed Erica's pivotal "I see leaves!" coming-out monologue. Her last episode airs this Thursday.

"I was very excited when they told me that Erica and Callie were going to have this relationship. And I really hoped we were going to show what happens when two women fall in love and that they were going to treat it like any heterosexual couple on TV," Smith tells EW's Ausiello, who first reported on her release. "So I was surprised and disappointed when they just suddenly told me that they couldn't write for my character anymore.

"I was really, really shocked," she stresses. "It was the last thing I expected."

In a statement, Rhimes says, "Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it's not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show — Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie."

The Grey's boss goes on to say, "I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with 'another lesbian.' If you'll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season."

Though ABC declines to comment on the reason for the unexpected ouster, Smith says that in her talk with Rhimes, she got the feeling it was dictated by the network. "I don't know for sure, but it definitely seemed like [Shonda's] hands were tied," she says, "like some decision came down from above."

Might have this frank exploration of two women coming to terms with new sexual orientations proven too hot for ABC to handle? Smith saw no such signs. "At work I had no sense of it. And more fans seemed to like it than not," she tells EW. "I don't think I'm ever going to know [why this happened]."

The answer may be obvious, if one looks at a pattern of recent story "twists" across ABC. Ugly Betty last season introduced with much fanfare Rebecca Romijn as a post-op transgender; now she's gone. Right out of the gate, Dirty Sexy Money lathered things up by pairing aspiring politician Patrick with a great transgender love; last week, she walked out of his life. So Grey's writing out a full-fledged lesbian such as Erica — versus the simply lez-curious Callie — would seem to fit this pattern. Meanwhile, gay males such as Brothers & Sisters' Kevin appear to go unpestered... at least for now.

TV SQUAD

Grey's Anatomy: Rise Up - Nov 7th
(S05E07) "It's like a bouquet... of corpses!" - Izzie

You know, for a guy that died, Denny Duquette somehow manages to get more screen-time on Grey's Anatomy than most of the characters who are still living. Seriously, it must be incredibly frustrating to be a minor character on this show and know that two or three times a season, some dead guy who most fans are sick of will get more time in front of the camera than you will.
You know what though? I liked this Denny episode. I liked it a lot. I'm even going to go out on a limb and say that this was the best episode of the season thus far. While I typically moan when I seen Jeffrey Dean Morgan's name pop up in the opening credits, I got over it pretty fast once I realized why he was there this time around - so Izzie can finally get over him. Is she? Hell no - but this was a good start.............cont’d

'Grey's Anatomy': Show some respect - Nov 6, 2008
We've always known that the interns and residents at Seattle Grace are immature and self-involved, in addition to being talented, but this week's Grey's Anatomy really drove that point home. And it also showed very clearly what kind of toll that an odd turn of writing can have on a character.
First, let me say a word about Brooke Smith, who it was announced this week is leaving the show. I think she's a wonderful actor, and I'm glad that she gets so much work so we can all see her more often. Regardless of the reasons for her departure, she created a memorable character who, while consistently tough, demanding, talented, and often overly critical, had a vulnerable side as well, and even though I didn't totally buy Callica as a couple, the way she let those vulnerabilities come through kept me interested in watching her from week to week. I'll be interested to see how that storyline gets wrapped up......................cont’d

Preview of 'Grey's Anatomy' 5.08: These Ties That Bind - Nov 07, 2008
eattle Grace Hospital will deal with a new personality in the November 13 episode of "Grey's Anatomy". One of Meredith's oldest friends, Sadie, enrolls a job as an intern at the hospital but Mer's friends are less than welcoming to her.
Lexie leads her fellow interns in secretive, unorthodox surgical training sessions, and a new surgeon, Virginia Dixon, brings rules and order to the OR. Dr. Hunt, meanwhile, continues to pester on the other doctors with his trauma room method, and causes further rift, especially with Sloan.............cont’d

'Grey's' Lesbian Doc Fails the 'Chemistry' Test - Nov 7, 2008
Dr. Erica Hahn was cast out of the horny halls of Seattle Grace Hospital on "Grey's Anatomy" last night, a mere two weeks after consummating her relationship with Callie, a.k.a. Sara Ramirez.
Though actress Brooke Smith, who plays Hahn, had been told back in September that her services no longer would be needed, she waited until three days before her exit from the show to fling herself in an ecstasy of grief at Entertainment Weekly.
Though Smith said she did not know why she was let go, Entertainment Weekly did its best to convey that she was expunged because ABC or its parent, Disney, got cold feet over the whole McLesbian thing -- because the EW wag himself had told Smith this was going to happen back in July, when he ran into her at a trophy-show red carpet.
Lesbian hookups are a time-honored broadcast sweeps tradition -- this being the November version of the quarterly ratings derby. Actresses who have been tagged made-for-broadcast lesbian on their shows tend to have a very short life expectancy -- about that of plant lice. By that measure, Erica is a true survivor. She and Callie exchanged their first kisses last season -- during the May sweeps. ...... there’s more

Guild, AMPTP negotiations still up in the air
SAG’s taken another small step toward possible resumption of its long-stalled negotiations, agreeing to meet for a second session with a federal mediator on Wednesday.

No date’s been set for restarting talks between the Screen Actors Guild and the majors, but that announcement could come as early as this week. SAG’s feature-primetime contract expired June 30, and the guild last met officially with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television producers on July 16.

SAG made a brief announcement Friday about the upcoming meeting with Juan Carlos Gonzalez -- a day after Gonzalez held his initial meeting with the congloms. ...............there’s more
