Meredith: [voice over] In 6500BC, some guy looked at his sick friend and said "I have an idea. Why don't I drill a hole in your skull? It'll make you feel better." Thus, surgery was born. It takes a certain brand of crazy to come up with an idea like drilling into somebody's skull, but, surgeons have always been a confident bunch. We usually know what we're doing, and when we don't we still act like we do. We walk boldly into undiscovered country, plant a flag and start ordering people around. It's invigorating... and terrifying.

Meredith: [voice over] We like to think we're fearless, eager to explore unknown lands and soak up new experiences. But the fact is, we're always terrified. Maybe the terror is part of the attraction - some people go to horror movies... we cut things open... dive into dark water.

Grey's Anatomy (TV series) - Director (1 episode)
Episode #5.4 - Director

Eric Stoltz: From a Blank Slate to Caprica and Grey's - Sep 8, 2008 5:07 PM
...................................He also is directing an episode of Grey's Anatomy, which he deems "a more massive undertaking" than, say, his previous behind-the-camera work on Boston Legal and Law & Order. "It's the difference between driving a bus and riding a bike — and on that bus are 17 unbelievably talented people," he says. "[Grey's] is an embarrassment of riches. It's quite mad, in a delightful way."

Stoltz, of course, is not at liberty to divulge what his Grey's episode entails, but he will say this: "It is really wonderfully character-driven, featuring a lot of people falling in and out of love." (Awwww....) "I'm very happy with the way it's going." — Matt Mitovich

SPOILERFIX SPOILAGE

Episodes 5.04: Brave New World
Airdate: October 9, 2008

* new 09/11 - A male patient named Arnie goes to the ER after his wife Maureen threw a remote control at him claiming that he is boring! A doctor explains to Arnie that he's been lethargic because of a bening brain tumor. This could explain why he mostly slept through a trip he took with his wife. Arnie is concerned that Maureen wants to divorce him. However, when she learns that he is sick, Maureen feels really bad. To convince a kid to let the nurse put an IV on him, a doctor agrees to have one put on his own arm. Source: SpoilerFix.com

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

General Spoilers:

* new 09/11 - [Derek] finally ditches the trailer. "He is going to come and live in my house," [Ellen] Pompeo reveals. "And that becomes a problem. He tries to say I have to throw my roommates out. And I consider it." Lexie falls for an oblivious George. And after putting her through the emotional wringer last season, [Shonda] Rhimes says Bailey will find a better balance of work and marriage. Source: TV Guide
* new 09/11 - Although [Kevin] McKidd's status is technically still recurring, I'll be shocked if he isn't made a full-time regular by the end of the season. Shonda Rhimes is apparently doing cartwheels over his work thus far. [...] L Word alum Janina Gavankar is joining the cast of Grey's Anatomy as an intern. Meanwhile, relative newcomer Brandon Scott (Cold Case) is also checking into Seattle Grace as a junior McDreamy. [...] Gavankar and Scott will start off as recurring players. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 08/28 - [Dr. Addison Montgomery] may take another trip back to Seattle Grace sometime in the middle of the season, hints executive producer Shonda Rhimes. "I don't know if it's going to work with the story, and we don't want her to come back for a visit if it doesn't feel important, something only Addison can do," says Rhimes. "But the idea is on the table." Source: Entertainment Weekly
* 08/24 - "Do you want to move in?" [Meredith] asks. Of course [Derek] does, but after four seasons of she-loves-me, she-loves-me-not, Derek replies the only way he can: "Are you sure?" [...] "The first three episodes start the dynamic of where we are all going," reports Patrick Dempsey. "Meredith is trusting him and moving forward cautiously, and Derek is waiting there, saying, 'I'm here to support you.'" [... Kevin McKidd] who starred in last season's time-travel drama Journeyman [...] will be hanging around Seattle for at least 22 episodes. He plays a new character, brash Army surgeon Owen Hunt, who arrives at the emergency room after an auto accident. On the way to the hospital, he saves the other crash victims in the back of the ambulance. Derek, who is unaware of Hunt's heroism, gets up in his business when the rugged redhead interferes with one of his patients. "Who the hell are you?" he barks, later calling the soldier on leave from Iraq "Uncle Sam." [...] It's clear McKidd hasn't been brought aboard just to be McDreamy's worst nightmare. Love, or at least some steamy sex, seems to be in the air for Cristina Yang, who spent most of last season being depressed and mean while she got over Burke. In the first episode, Cristina most certainly gets her flirt on, giving Hunt's leg wound some extra-special attention. "He and Cristina definitely have a moment, which plays out not as we'd all expect," [Shonda] Rhimes says. "But, then, things never do." [...] Izzie's got a love story -- and it's a big one. [...] George and Lexie's love story is going to take an incredibly unexpected turn. See, Lexie loves George. She loves him. And George, so focused on finally getting another shot at being a resident, doesn't even see that she loves him. It happened while he was looking the other way. [...] Callie and Erica have a love story of their own. And, yes, it includes Mark. [... Mark is] finally going to get [a love interest.] Source: TV Guide
* 08/24 - Many of the medical stories this season involve couples whose relationships could shed light on Meredith and Derek's situation. In one case, when a wife throws a remote control at her man, the resulting examination of his skull reveals a tumor. Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 08/13 - Chief Webber is going to be whipping the staff into shape when the hospital starts to slip in the national rankings as one of the best teaching hospitals in the country. Source: Kristin on E!Online
* 08/13 - An upcoming episode will find some of our favorite residents wandering over to Seattle Grace's never-before-seen dermatology department -- and they will not be happy with what they find. Namely, the kind of posh work environment more consistent with a five-star spa than a hospital. Source: The Ausiello Files
* 07/20 - Things are going to be... awkward... between the [Callie and Erica] when Grey's returns. Source: TV Guide Online
* 07/12 - ABC is not officially confirming the news yet, but reliable sources tell me that Rome-ing Journeyman Kevin McKidd has just signed on the dotted line to join ABC's Grey's Anatomy for its upcoming season. Playing a surgeon who arrives at Seattle Grace fresh from a tour of duty in Iraq, McKidd will first be (barely) glimpsed during the two-hour season premiere. McKidd's character, by some accounts, ultimately will play doctor with Cristina, who has been nursing a broken heart and a seriously bruised ego ever since you-know-who didn't stop talking skedaddled out of Seattle a season ago. Source: TV Guide Online
* 06/14 - I hear someone may be preggers - and that someone shared a red-hot smooch in the finale! Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide
* 01/10 - Someone - and a major someone at that - wants to be discharged from Seattle Grace, and STAT. But, as far as I can tell, that someone is not Sandra Oh. Source: Ask Ausiello @ TV Guide

SCOOP-AGE & OTHER TRICKSTERS

The Ausiello Files

Ask Ausiello: Oct 14, 2008,
Question: Where's the Mer-Der hotness this season on Grey's Anatomy? The most we've gotten so far is a kiss on the cheek! What gives? -- Dee
Ausiello: Maybe they need a third party to spice things up? If so, help is on the way! According to my Grey's snitch, when Melissa George debuts as Seattle Grace's latest bisexual intern on Nov 6., we'll learn that she has a history with -- holy lipstick lesbians! -- Meredith. Needless to say, Derek is very anxious to find out the exact nature of their history (were they friends without benefits or with benefits?), and (presumably) whether or not it can be repeated. In front of him. Repeatedly.

Question: Alex and Izzie spoilers, please! I've loved them forever! -- Claire
Ausiello: Then something tells me you're going to fall head over heels for next Thursday's episode, which may feature a big Alex-Izzie smooch. And by may I mean definitely will.

SIDES & SUMMARIES

Episode 5.04
A male patient named Arnie goes to the ER after his wife Maureen threw a remote control at him claiming that he is boring!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sides for Episode 5.04:

Thanks to Linda, and Crys over at TWoP:

Summary

Mrs. Borsokowski (60’s) – Mrs. B is sitting on the bed. Dr. Swanson gives Dr. Walters the chart. Dr. Walters reads the symptoms ( redness, itching, inflammation) and diagnosis a rash. Mrs. B says she’s heard that Dr. Walters is the mean one so she wants another doctor. Dr. Walters examines Mrs. B’s skin and says her skin condition has desecrated her whole arm and she’ll likely need a skin graft or reconstructive surgery. Dr. Walters moves on to another patient, Dr. Swanson sees that Mrs. B is starting to freak out. Dr. Swanson takes a look at the arm and says Mrs. B has a rash and not flesh eating bacteria so it’s probably nothing. Mrs. B asks Dr. S if she’s sure that it won’t turn into something bad. Dr. S once again says it’s only a rash and they’ll get her some cream from Dermatology. Dr. S leaves and Mrs. B calls out to Dr.W saying he’s wrong.

Dr. Daisy Pepman (30-ish) – Dr. Smith walks through the door and Dr. Daisy Pepman is at the nurses station. Daisy spots Dr.S and introduces herself and asks if she can help him. Dr.S asks Daisy where he could get some medical cream. Daisy says the nurses are busy but if Dr.S doesn’t mind waiting a bit she’ll get the cream for Dr.S herself. Daisy asks Dr.S if he would like some water with lemon while he waits. Dr.S accepts the offer and Daisy reaches over with one hand to fetch a nice pitcher. Daisy’s other hand is being massaged by a man standing next to her. Dr. S stares confused and Daisy explains that Chris is their massage therapist. They do such delicate work so it’s important their hands stay healthy. They have Chris on staff to work on them when they have some spare time. Dr. S asks if every attending gets their hands massaged at work. Daisy replies saying attendings have another therapist, Chris is for residents only. Dr.S asks Daisy if she’s a resident and she says she’s a 1st year resident and loving it. Chris' hands move up Daisy’s arm and go to work on her neck.

Maureen – patient is Arnie Grandy and Maureen is his wife. They are both in their 60’s. It’s morning and Arnie is in the ER with a gash on his head. Dr. Walters comes in and asks what happened. Maureen threw the remote at Arnie’s head. Maureen is angry because all Arnie can do is sit around watching TV or fall asleep. Arnie tries to calm her down but Maureen says she’s going to divorce him and as soon as he gets his head treated they are going to a lawyer. Dr. Walters starts cleaning and stitching the wound. Maureen asks Dr. W if she’s ever been to Europe and Dr. W says she hasn’t but she’ll go someday. Maureen tells Dr.W to not wait till she’s retired and she’s with a man that can’t even be bothered to look out the window. Maureen says she waited 25 years to go on a trip around the world and when they went on a 6 month trip around the world, Arnie slept through the whole thing. Arnie says he worked for 30 years so he was tired. Maureen says she’s tired of being married to someone who has no interest in the world. Maureen goes to the cafeteria to get some coffee while Dr.W continues to stitch Arnie’s head.

(waiting area – evening) Dr. Walters finds Maureen and informs her that her husband is in post-op. The procedure took longer than they thought and was tough but Dr.W thinks that overall things went very well. Maureen is distraught and starts sobbing. Dr.W tries to reassure her that Arnie should pull through and he’ll be okay. Maureen, sobbing, because Arnie was sick and she told him he was a bad, lazy and boring person. Arnie slept through 6 continents and she berated him the whole trip. Dr.W says he was sick and Maureen didn’t know. Maureen says she’s should have known because she’s his wife. Arnie worked hard his whole life and his retirement has been her yelling at him and saying he’s a bad person. Maureen thinks she doesn’t deserve him. Dr. W sits down next to Maureen and says that retirement is a whole different world from they’re other life together. It’s like they are in a whole new relationship and they have to get to know each other again. It may be hard but it may be nice. They get to try again. Maureen looks at Dr.W with gratitude.

David – David and Lauren, around 28 years old, are parents to 8 year-old Duncan who’s there for heart surgery.

(outside Duncan’s room in the hallway) Duncan races down the hall, grabs onto a T-Stand and uses it as a scooter. His parents, David and Lauren come out of the room and run after him while calling his name. Dr. Smith is also in on the chase and they all catch up in the waiting area where Duncan is standing on a chair with his hand on the fire alarm lever. His parents tell him to not pull the lever. Duncan says he isn’t gong to have surgery. David pleads with him but Duncan says no. Duncan isn’t defiant, he’s just scared but he doesn’t move.

(Duncan’s room) Duncan is in bed looking miserable (so are his parents) and has a model airplane in his hand. Dr. Tomson enters and Lauren apologizes and says Duncan’s a good kid. David says it’s their fault because they should’ve been able to stop Duncan and they feel awful for it. Dr.T tells them to not worry about it. Lauren says if Dr.T’s boss or the hospital are mad at someone to please not be mad at Duncan. Lauren is scared and starts to tear up. Dr. T reassures them that no one is mad at Duncan. Lauren and David smile with relief and gratefulness. Dr.T tells Duncan he’s just going to put in an IV. Duncan says no and David tells him it won’t hurt. Dr.T tells Duncan that he’ll have a nurse put one in his arm first. Dr.T pulls out his arm as a nurse is about to insert the IV. Duncan’s parents are shocked and impressed. David remarks that Dr.T is really good at this and asks him if he has kids. Dr.T says he doesn’t but that he was an airplane guy at when he was Duncan’s age and airplane guys like to know how things work. David puts an arm around Lauren who’s scared that Duncan is going through this but relieved that Dr.T got through to him.

Lauren – First part is similar to David’s with them chasing after Duncan.

Dr. Tomson arrives to do pre-op stuff on Duncan and finds Lauren sitting outside Duncan’s room on the floor close to tears. Lauren apologizes and asks if she’s not supposed to sit there. Dr.T says it’s alright and asks if she’s ok. Lauren says that David went to get sandwiches and Duncan is packing to leave. Lauren is upset because she isn’t able to stop Duncan and think she sucks at this. She tells Dr.T that she’s tired and fried because every night she stays awake to hear Duncan breathe because she’s afraid his heart will stop and he’ll die while she was asleep. She wants to be a mom who’ll protect her kid but she doesn’t know how to do it. She says she’s 27 years old and all her friends still go to bars. Dr.T says that nobody knows how to be a mom of a sick kid, it’s not something that is taught. Dr.T tells Lauren that she has a very smart kid and they all have to up their game. Dr.T asks Lauren if he can give it a try, Lauren tells him to go ahead
...[Message truncated] (Means ABC cut off the post for being too long, so I don't know if there's supposed to be more.)

Crys speculations on the sides:

I think the Dr. with Maureen/Arnie is Meredith. I think Maureen and Arnie having to get to know each other again due to the change in their life and relationship with Arnie's retirement will relate to MerDer having to get to know each other now that their life and relationship has changed because they are living together. It goes with what Shonda said about them living together. This also seems to be a Neuro case so this will also be with Derek.

I think on Mrs. Borsokowski's case it'll be perhaps Cristina and Lexie. Dr. Walters seems pretty annoyed that Mrs.B only has a rash and Mrs. B refers to this Dr as the "mean one". I think Lexie, as Cristina's intern, may be Dr. Swanson and sees that Mrs.B is freaking out by what Dr.Walters said and tries to calm her down by telling her it's nothing serious and she'll just need a cream for her rash. The only other Dr. that I could see being referred to as the "mean one" and annoyed that it's only a rash is Alex but I'm leaning towards Cris.

Dr. Daisy Pepman... this had me going 'huh?!' when I first read it. I think Dr.Smith is McKidd's character. This Dr is an attending and it's obvious he's not familiar with things at SGH.

Lauren/David/Duncan - this one is harder. This is a cardio case so we'll be seeing Hahn here. Dr.Tomson doesn't have kids of his own but he has a way with them. This Dr was also into airplanes as a kid. I'm think Dr.Tomson may be George (or maybe even Alex because he too has shown that he's good with kids).

Good news: An actual SCRIPT of the casting sides!!!
http://spoilertv-greysanatomy.blogspot.com...pt-snippet.html
Bad news: Don't get too excited though, it's still got the fake names...

Some extra parts not included in the script or the above summary:

Credit WindSprints at TWoP for passing this one on, and McSunny16.

Two new sides were released, a nurse and Arnie. I know Crys usually summarizes (and does way better!, thanks Crys!) but here's a quick glimpse of what is in the sides:

Nurse is just one line about sutures, its an ER nurse.

Arnie has a tumor. Dr. Simms talks to Arnie and Maureen. He's been lethargic due to the tumor. Maureen asks how she was supposed to know, Arnie says she should have given him the benefit of the doubt, not throw electronics at him. Dr. Simms tells him its a complicated procedure, that he should discuss with Maureen. Arnie tells the doctor that he's sure Maureen thinks its worth the risk, that he is so boring without the surgery. Maureen is pissed at being blamed and upset for the way she treated him. Later, Dr. Simms is in Arnie's room. He's sad. He tells her that he has a tumor it took 5 doctors to diagnose and a wife that wanted to divorce him even before she knew he was damaged goods. He asks her what if it wasn't just the tumor. They never spent more than an hour together and now they are together all the time. What if she has figured out she doesn't like him? Dr. Simms says he is likable. Arnie tells her she's a nice kid. She asks how he feels about Dr. Smith, he says ok, she tells him Dr. Smith will be taking over the case now. Dr. Simms tells him Dr. Smith is very good. Arnie doesn't want someone new. He tells Dr. Simms he likes her and can't he get her back.

SNEAK PEEKS & PROMOS & PHOTOS & VIDEOS

SNEAK PEEKS

Episode 5.04 - Brave New World - 4 Sneak Peeks Oct 15, 2008
- The one where Mark and Derek talking about removing a tumor from a patient. Mark asks, 'Which one of your roommates will be assisting?' Derek replies, 'Karev.' Izzie then bursts in and says, 'Dr Shepherd, I want back on this case. This is my patient. Alex stole him from me. Remember when I was telling you...' Then Derek interrupts, 'Dr Stevens, let's be clear. In this hospital I am not your roommate, I don't give a crap about your personal problems. I have a resident, I don't need another one.' Alex comes in and tells Derek that the patient is in his room. Derek leaves, and Izzie calls Alex a 'Son of a b*tch' Alex says, 'Go cry to somebody who cares.'

- The one where Chief: 'Apparently some people thought I was kidding last week when I announced that nobody was going to get to hang out on their favourite specialty anymore. I wasn't! Junior residents don't specialize. So all the requests to send you back to that place where your true heart lives can end now. Dr Bailey makes the assignments, do not, and I repeat, do not harang her.'

*The chief walks off the George sort of follows.*

The chief stops and says, 'O'Malley, I made a call. They don't have your score yet. If I knew, I would tell you.' George stays silent and the chief walks off. Lexie comes up to George and says consolingly, 'Hey. You passed. We're going to go to Joe's tonight and we're going to celebrate. I'm going to buy you a beer and all the peanuts you can eat.' George responds, 'What if I didn't pass?' Lexie replies, 'Well, then I'm still buying you a beer. Beer for loser's.'
- The one where Bailey has obviously just dealt with some residents/interns and she comes walking up to callie, ranting.

Bailey: 'They have the nerve to be indignant about how they're not allowed to work on their specialties anymore. They don't have specialties! They should be grateful they're even allowed in the...*looks up at Callie who is silent*....are you listening to me?'

Callie: *looks around nervously* 'I'm going on a date with Erica Hahn. And, uh, that's awkward, cos she's a...she's a collegue, and she's an attending and because she's a she. And ah...there's been kissing, but ah, no touching. And what if I'm not into it? What if I'm horrible at all the...stuff...south of the border. Cos I've never been south of the border. With a female.'

*Bailey is just frozen in place, staring at Callie*

Callie continues: 'I mean, I've never even been over the...ah....northern mountains, you know what i'm saying?

*Callie looks at Bailey who is still frozen in shock*

Callie says awkwardly: 'We're going to pretend this didn't happen.'
- The one where
Derek is naked in bed, Mer walks up to him. There is a diary on the bedside table, which she sees.

Mer: 'You keep a diary? Have I not known that all this time? That you keep a diary?'

Derek: 'No, no I don't.' *covers the diary up with a newspaper*

*Mer sits down beside him on the bed*

Mer: 'Aw, don't be shy. I think it's cute.'

Derek: 'It's not mine.'

Mer: 'I won't read it.'

*Mer registers what he said, and as he leans up to kiss her, she pulls away*

Mer: 'Whose is it?'

Derek: 'Your mother's.'

*Derek goes to kiss her again, and again she pulls away and then looks towards the bedside table*

Derek continues: 'It was in a big box full of old issues of the New England journel of medicine.'

Mer: 'Did you read it?'

Derek: 'No. I brought it up here for you.'

Mer: 'Why were you going through her things?'

Derek: 'I was trying to find space for my clothes, your closet is full.'

*Mer nods absently, looking unsure*

Mer: 'Oh. I have to shower, I've been hauling Cristina's boxes.'

*Mer stands up to leave and grabs the diary on her way out. Derek sighs deeply.*

Brave New World - Iron Maiden
Album: Brave New World Released: 2000

Dying swans twisted wings, beauty not needed here
Lost my love, lost my life, in this garden of fear
I have seen many things, in a lifetime alone
Mother love is no more, bring this savage back home

Wilderness house of pain, makes no sense of it all
Close this mind dull this brain, messiah before his fall
What you see is not real, those who know will not tell
All is lost sold your souls to this brave new world

A brave new world, in a brave new world
A brave new world, in a brave new world
In a brave new world, a brave new world
In a brave new world, a brave new world

Dragon kings dying queens, where is salvation now
Lost my life lost my dreams, rip the bones from my flesh
Silent screams laughing here, dying to tell you the truth
You are planned and you are damned in this brave new world

A brave new world, in a brave new world
A brave new world, in a brave new world
In a brave new world, a brave new world
In a brave new world, a brave new world

A brave new world, in a brave new world
A brave new world, in a brave new world
In a brave new world, a brave new world
In a brave new world, a brave new world

Dying swans twisted wings, bring this savage back home

PODCAST

Grey’s Anatomy Official Podcast: 10/17/08

It was a brave new world on several friends at Seattle Grace Hospital. Callie and Erica explored unchartered territory. George passed his exams. And Cristina discovered the polar opposite of the surgery ward: The dermatology wing.

Welcome to the official Grey's Anatomy pod cast. Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers are back to take us on a journey through the most recent episode "Brave New World." And we'll even drop some hints about what's coming up in the future. Speaking of future episodes be sure to tune in to ABC on Thursday, October 23rd at 9:00 p.m. eastern and pacific for "There's no I in team." Now without further ado here's Shonda and Betsy.

Hi. I'm Shonda. I'm Betsy. This is Grey's Anatomy.

BETSY BEERS: Well you now I'm just going to give a little whether report here in California right now because it's frickin' dry. There have been fires. It's been really weird. And of course there are fires always in this part of southern California
SHONDA RHIMES: And Santa Ana winds are blowing which makes the fires worse.
BETSY BEERS: So I sound a little stuffy. So if I sound a little bit stuffy, it's not because I'm stuffy, it's just because I am actually
SHONDA RHIMES: It's the weather
BETSY BEERS: It's the weather
SHONDA RHIMES: Blame is on the weather.
BETSY BEERS: We do blame is on the weather. We blame the dryness of the weather and the dryness by the way you need to moisturize. Which reminds me everyone needs to vote
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. Moisturizing does lead to voting
BETSY BEERS: It does. Once you moisturize. On your way to the voting booth moisturize
SHONDA RHIMES: Moisturize
BETSY BEERS: Moisturize because if it's anything like in southern California you are going to want to be moisturized and you are going to want to vote
SHONDA RHIMES: And let me remind you, your vote matters
BETSY BEERS: More and more and more importantly it matters. So don't listen to the polls. Just vote because you want to vote
SHONDA RHIMES: Vote your conscience.
BETSY BEERS: Vote your conscience. Vote also with your hands.
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes
BETSY BEERS: Use your hands to
SHONDA RHIMES: And don't forget to look for cute boys when you are voting
BETSY BEERS: That's right.
SHONDA RHIMES: Or girls.
BETSY BEERS: Because remember, voting booths, great way to meet people
SHONDA RHIMES: They vote. They're citizens.
BETSY BEERS: I think hot people vote.
SHONDA RHIMES: Yeah. Many hot people vote.
BETSY BEERS: Many hot people vote
SHONDA RHIMES: The polls are just a plethora of just hot people
BETSY BEERS: It's absolutely true. And you know the great thing about the polls is, it's like jury duty. It's like the melting pot of life. Because you get to meet lots of different people. And I've met great people in jury duty and at the polls.
SHONDA RHIMES: But less stinky than jury duty and also not all day.
BETSY BEERS: And by the way the room for jury duty not so much on the room.
SHONDA RHIMES: Voting's quick
BETSY BEERS: Voting's fast
SHONDA RHIMES: It takes 15 minutes. Maybe five.
BETSY BEERS: And you get that little sticker. So let's say you voted, you got your coffee, you are standing in line and there's that person with the little sticker. You can say hay you voted
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. You need to take democracy seriously. Isn't that what you want in a partner?
BETSY BEERS: You no I think
SHONDA RHIMES: People who vote are often good at sex
BETSY BEERS: So remember. Voting equals good sex
SHONDA RHIMES: Exactly. And that is our message for today
BETSY BEERS: That's our message for today
SHONDA RHIMES: I don't really think we need to say anything else
BETSY BEERS: I don't either because I think actually since we've given this message probably any questions anybody has about "Brave New World" might just be
SHONDA RHIMES: Superfluous
BETSY BEERS: You know say they were be superfluous accept for this actual episode has one of my favorite things in the history of the food chain of life
SHONDA RHIMES: Mine too
BETSY BEERS: Of all the history of television from Jack Parr on
SHONDA RHIMES: I'm actually really proud of what were able to do here
BETSY BEERS: I'm also going to tell you a story about the furniture in the dermatology wing.
SHONDA RHIMES: Uh-huh.
BETSY BEERS: I think we are talking about dermatology
SHONDA RHIMES: I was talking about another piece
BETSY BEERS: Were you really?
SHONDA RHIMES: But let's talk about dermatology
BETSY BEERS: Okay. See. Mine was dermatology. Because I. It's like we both clearly have great things which means this could go on for six hours
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. Dermatology started because in the writer’s room I was saying you know we always make jokes in the writer’s room about dermatology as sort of being a surgical specialty that's not really surgical. And it's not true. Dermatologists do great things as evidence by my dermatologist. Dermatologists do great things and we love them.
BETSY BEERS: They check moles
SHONDA RHIMES: But I really believe that someone like Cristina or Meredith or hard core people would find dermatology to be interesting because it's also the highest specialty gone into by women who want to have families, who want to have a life because the hours aren't crazy. So you step through the doors you know from the our guys side in dermatology and it's a whole other world
BETSY BEERS: Well I also just love the idea that okay the world at Seattle Grace is this world that we know. We know the hospital, blah, blah, blah and then one day you open the door and this whole other wing we didn't know anything about
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes
BETSY BEERS: And the wing is the anti OR. It's the gore fest of Seattle Grace that we know of operations. It's just people drinking water with berries in it and getting hand massages
SHONDA RHIMES: And getting hand massages, yeah.
BETSY BEERS: Which is such a funny kind of flip side reality that you actually created an alternate reality of Seattle Grace within Seattle Grace
SHONDA RHIMES: Which was our whole point
BETSY BEERS: Which is hysterical.
SHONDA RHIMES: On the other side of that door there's a world in which people don't work all the time and they get too much sleep and they share and chat and laugh
BETSY BEERS: And I think just so um our listening audience knows. I think we both became sort of obsessed with the furniture in dermatology
SHONDA RHIMES: I became so obsessed with the furniture in dermatology that I redecorated my entire office
BETSY BEERS: She did. To look like dermatology
SHONDA RHIMES: A little bit to look like dermatology
BETSY BEERS: It's a little bit brighter, a little more colorful, a little more Shondaesque I would say, but
SHONDA RHIMES: So my office is now dermatology
BETSY BEERS: Could I say it's Zen? It's relaxing. I have a little more zest for lemon in my water when I'm sitting in there
SHONDA RHIMES: People enjoy coming in there now. Before it was kind of a dark cave
BETSY BEERS: It was kind of a dark cave. It was kind of a sadder more intense place
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes
BETSY BEERS: Where you went for intensity and now you kind of go for relaxation
SHONDA RHIMES: And you know the sofa that they are all sitting on in dermatology, I have that sofa now
BETSY BEERS: She has that sofa
SHONDA RHIMES: Not the exact same sofa
BETSY BEERS: Not the same sofa
SHONDA RHIMES: Because maybe we will go back to dermatology one day
BETSY BEERS: You never know. I'm hoping we go back to dermatology because it's one of my favorite places
SHONDA RHIMES: Because Dr. Daisy Patman must be known more.
BETSY BEERS: Okay, and by the way, who's named Dr. Daisy Patman?
SHONDA RHIMES: I love the name Dr. Daisy Patman
BETSY BEERS: The best name ever
SHONDA RHIMES: And she's so cheerful and pretty and happy
BETSY BEERS: She's fabulous
SHONDA RHIMES: Perfect skin
BETSY BEERS: She's fabulous. And I'll have to say the dermatology office is a little bit like my dermatology office when I go in. Then Dr. Ellen Rosenbach, he and his little perky people give you potions and they tell jokes
SHONDA RHIMES: Shut up
BETSY BEERS: Very nice man. We'll check your moles and we will do some electrolysis I'm sure if you are interested. Not that I am. But I think
SHONDA RHIMES: That's personal
BETSY BEERS: That's personal
SHONDA RHIMES: My personal favorite thing in the episode
BETSY BEERS: I know what this is
SHONDA RHIMES: Is Bailey and Callie
BETSY BEERS: You know what, and you know what as soon as you said my favorite thing in the episode I knew what you were talking about because this is if there's anything that is ultimately Bailey
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes
BETSY BEERS: It's the desire need to talk in metaphor
SHONDA RHIMES: And we were so proud of it because we really wanted to have a way to discuss the issue that they're discussing which ask the undiscovered country that is the vajayjay. In a way that felt like you could discuss it on a network TV and be still kind of openly but have it be funny and also helpful to Callie who's not sure what she's doing down there
BETSY BEERS: Well and then you gave it to Bailey and because this is the only way that Bailey could discuss it because Bailey could never discuss anything like this
SHONDA RHIMES: Well that is my favorite thing. Bailey would never talk about sex to anybody for any reason at any time. And what I loved is that we sort of layered it in so that if you think or you would assume that Bailey's staring at her that way because she disproves of two women being together or you know she can't handle that part of it. But that's not it. Bailey's just Bailey. She doesn't care who you are having sex with. She just doesn't want to talk about it ever. But clearly Callie needs it. And when she sees the way Erica's looking at Callie she realizes that poor Erica might need it too
BETSY BEERS: Everyone needs some help
SHONDA RHIMES: Everyone needs a little love.
BETSY BEERS: And it's the conversation of that
SHONDA RHIMES: Spongy red. Yes
BETSY BEERS: Which I'm sorry that she brings that up and it's so
SHONDA RHIMES: My favorite thing simply is just watching Chandra Wilson giving that speech
BETSY BEERS: With that sort of enthusiasm
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. That moment before she starts to speak when she's trying to figure out what words to use and then what I love is her little satisfied with herself nod before she walks out of the room. Like okay I did that good. Good for me. And then she leaves Callie sort of like I don't even know what that means
BETSY BEERS: Well and I also feel like Bailey's coming from a more confident place emotionally at this point because she's made a choice that she's working on things with tuck and you know she's back in her family so she's back being that weirdly stable source of all wisdom
SHONDA RHIMES: She's always been our anchor. She's the only one in a stable relationship. You know what I mean she's our anchor
BETSY BEERS: Yeah. She always is. So it's nice to see her back dispelling wisdom as only Bailey can, which is, and also to me it's a big sign of her love for Callie. Like she's always
SHONDA RHIMES: And for lesbians everywhere
BETSY BEERS: For lesbians everywhere, but specifically that she takes the time with Callie really speaks to the past of the relationship
SHONDA RHIMES: To explain
BETSY BEERS: Which I think is just a beautiful thing because I'm not sure she would go to all those lengths with everybody. With the man whore
SHONDA RHIMES: Yeah that's very true. She certainly wouldn't go those lengths with Sloan
BETSY BEERS: Which I think down the line we might see. She's not quite as patient with Sloan. Let's put it that way
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes
BETSY BEERS: I think also Izzy and Alex are sort of an interesting point in time because this relationship is really getting tense and
SHONDA RHIMES: He's being fairly abusive and I love that she smacks him in the back of the head with a roll of tape because the man, he's acting out all of his aggressions on her
BETSY BEERS: Yep
SHONDA RHIMES: And I love that he says you know that she's the only person he can be pissed at, which is true. She's the only one left. He can't be pissed at a crazy girl because she’s crazy. He can't be pissed at anybody else because in a weird way you can only be that angry at your closest friends and
BETSY BEERS: Uh-huh.
SHONDA RHIMES: And she's his closest friend so he can be freely mean and abusive to her because in a weird way there's the safety of knowing that she's going to be there which I like
BETSY BEERS: And I think that's absolutely true
SHONDA RHIMES: And where this goes it's really good too so
BETSY BEERS: Trust us it's really really really good
SHONDA RHIMES: Yeah. You are going to want to keep watching this one
BETSY BEERS: This is not the end of the turn pike
SHONDA RHIMES: This is not your typical story of romance
BETSY BEERS: Not in any way shape for form
SHONDA RHIMES: We'll talk about it again in a couple episodes if you know what I mean
BETSY BEERS: Yeah and I think you'll all be saying the same thing which is holy moly
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes
BETSY BEERS: Clearly I think there's a little window open for them to get closer because he sort of admitted where his brain is
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. There's a window. The other thing that happens is that George finally, finally, finally passes his intern exam and
BETSY BEERS: Thank God
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. And be a resident and we made him suffer for quite a long time
BETSY BEERS: We did
SHONDA RHIMES: But now his full fledge little resident wings and he can fly which is lovely. I love the moment where he walks off and leaves Lexi behind kind of forgetting about her
BETSY BEERS: Yeah
SHONDA RHIMES: Because she loves him so deeply
BETSY BEERS: I think Gorge is in a very self protective, self contained place right now
SHONDA RHIMES: Yeah I think he lays been fully focused on getting to where he needs to go so much to me that's why he has never noticed that Lexi has feelings for him. He has been so focused on getting where he needs to go that he's not looking around to see anybody else.
BETSY BEERS: And he barely has any emotional space given the relationships he's had for the past little bit. I mean he got married in Vegas after his father died. He then flipped right into a relationship with Izzy. He's in no position
SHONDA RHIMES: He should not be dating
BETSY BEERS: He should not be dating
SHONDA RHIMES: There are some times where people should just be alone with themselves to pull it together
BETSY BEERS: I think that's true
SHONDA RHIMES: This is one of those times for George
BETSY BEERS: I think so too. I think sometimes you just got to get to know yourself again and that seems like that would be good for him
SHONDA RHIMES: Maybe later when he goes to vote he might meet somebody
BETSY BEERS: That's true and maybe later when he goes to vote he deserves to meet somebody.
SHONDA RHIMES: Exactly because he voted
BETSY BEERS: And that would have and maybe it's should be somebody they meet very slowly progresses slowly
SHONDA RHIMES: Maybe you see them up for a series of elections and then perhaps you speak
BETSY BEERS: It could be an ongoing meet situation which isn't rapid and has respect for George's need for a little bit of distance
SHONDA RHIMES: While voters often provide good sex, voting slowly and over time could lead to love
BETSY BEERS: It does. It think that. You know. I think there's a whole political treaties clearly which could be coming out of this which is how to make voting more appealing
SHONDA RHIMES: We should write a book. We should write a book. Voting is sexy.
BETSY BEERS: The average person voting is sexy. And Meredith you know with Meredith and Derek I think Derek seems to be really trying desperately to make a home for himself
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. Yes, he is
BETSY BEERS: The casa of fun
SHONDA RHIMES: Boy is he trying.
BETSY BEERS: It's kind of rough, rough riding there. It's not much space in that place
SHONDA RHIMES: There's a lot of people living there
BETSY BEERS: There's a lot of people living there and apparently not only are there a lot of people but the ghost the Ellis seems to be living there more and more frequently
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. The diaries
BETSY BEERS: I think everywhere you turn
SHONDA RHIMES: We felt very strongly about these diaries and the idea that the diary would be a window into Meredith's mother but also a window into surgery as it used to be. Which was interesting to us. Um, those diaries are obviously going to hold a lot of meaning and we are going to find some stuff in there later but for right now they're Meredith's connections with her mother who is dead and I don't know why I said this if nobody new but Meredith's connection with her mother
BETSY BEERS: Just fort the record, Meredith's mother is dead. Just to recap Dylan the bomb guy's dead, Denny's dead. People are dead.
SHONDA RHIMES: But just to connect, and also to connect our residents with the struggles of residents from years past. I love the idea. I mean I always joke that I always wanted to do a show that was about 25 years ago when Ellis and Richard were interns and residents. And this is sort of
BETSY BEERS: For the hairdos alone
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. For the hairdos alone. For the fro. For the fro on the chief alone
BETSY BEERS: We're so so anxious to see that
SHONDA RHIMES: And the members only jackets and the leg warmers.
BETSY BEERS: Little tiny bit of shoulder pad. That would be good
SHONDA RHIMES: Yeah and like the Madonna like ripped clothing. Flashdance.
BETSY BEERS: I think it's pretty, pretty safe for me to say that flashback episode is clearly just barking at the gates here
SHONDA RHIMES: I wanted to do it for so long and everyone just stares at me when I say I want to do it
BETSY BEERS: She actually, I can testify that pretty much from like episode six of the show on you've been saying flash back.
SHONDA RHIMES: Flash back episode. It's the 70s.
BETSY BEERS: And we got a little confused about time frame because for the while it was the 60s which was would mean Meredith was 45
SHONDA RHIMES: 45 yeah.
BETSY BEERS: Which is crazy
SHONDA RHIMES: Literally it was like the early 80s. I think it's like 82 is what it is
BETSY BEERS: And the music in 82 was great
SHONDA RHIMES: Yeah. The music in 82 was great
BETSY BEERS: And MTV came on the air in 81
SHONDA RHIMES: And we got a little bit of it when we had Meredith have the memory of being on the carousel with her mother and you can't really tell but Richard's wearing a members only jacket which made me happier than anything in the history of man
BETSY BEERS: He is. And he had like Ellis had a really nice pretty long hairdo
SHONDA RHIMES: It was very Joan Baez
BETSY BEERS: Kind of nice. So that's something to look forward to in the future.
SHONDA RHIMES: Exactly
BETSY BEERS: Next week's going to be really good
SHONDA RHIMES: Next week’s episode is called "There is No I in Team."
BETSY BEERS: "No I in Team"
SHONDA RHIMES: Um, written by Jenna Bans
BETSY BEERS: There's no I in vote.
SHONDA RHIMES: There's no I in vote
BETSY BEERS: But that doesn't mean you shouldn't vote
SHONDA RHIMES: That means everybody should vote. I'm confused now. Anyway, it's a really great episode. We're really excited about it
BETSY BEERS: This is Jenna Bans' first episode
SHONDA RHIMES: It's Jenna Bans’ first episode here. She is very nervous. But she did a very good job
BETSY BEERS: Jenna rocks
SHONDA RHIMES: It's got some really great stuff in it. So I wish I could tell you about it, but as you know we don't do that
BETSY BEERS: We don't do that. We don't actually do that
SHONDA RHIMES: You earth watch or you don't
BETSY BEERS: By the way the DVR wonderful tool.
SHONDA RHIMES: Wonderful tool
BETSY BEERS: If maybe you are out on a date a pre vote date and you come back and you DVR'd that's okay
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. Yes
BETSY BEERS: But we love it when you watch it in real time. That's our favorite thing because then you can tune into us the next morning and we can ramble on about what you just saw and you won't have to wait. The immediacy is great
SHONDA RHIMES: Also, condition your hair during the commercial
BETSY BEERS: In preparation for voting
SHONDA RHIMES: Yes. Don't go to the polls looking bad
BETSY BEERS: Yeah. Don't look like I do when I walk the dog. That's my biggest advice
SHONDA RHIMES: You have got to be attractive when you go to the polls because of all the attractive people who are going to be there
BETSY BEERS: Well I think this pretty much wraps up this big lump of
SHONDA RHIMES: I mean we've said so much
BETSY BEERS: Yet, not so much actually
SHONDA RHIMES: Not so much, but so much
BETSY BEERS: Lots of quantity, hope the quality is in there someplace. If you pick through it maybe there's a diamond
SHONDA RHIMES: This is Shonda
BETSY BEERS: This is Betsy
SHONDA RHIMES AND BETSY BEERS: This is Grey's Anatomy.

Join us again next week for the deconstruction of the next episode "There's No I in Team." And perhaps more reasons why voting is sexy. "There's No I in Team," airs Thursday, October 23rd at 9:00 p.m. on ABC and as always is available the next day at ABC.com. Don't forget to tune in for Ugly Betty at 8:00 p.m. Stay for Grey's at 8:00 and then watch ABC's newest hit drama Life on Mars at 10:00. Thursdays on ABC are ugly and grey on Mars.

EP RECAP

10/16/2008 - "Brave New World"
Season 5, Episode 504
Richard reminds the residents that they can no longer specialize. Cristina is upset about being assigned to the clinic, but shares her best cardio tips with Meredith, including how to perform a complicated procedure she's never done before. Erica lets Meredith do the procedure but advises her, "If you lie to me again, the next heart you'll see will be your own as I cut it out of your chest with a steak knife!"

Callie is nervous about her first date with Erica, and confides her nerves to Miranda, who suggests she regard it as a trip to a foreign country. At dinner, Erica promises Callie there's "lots of undiscovered territory above the belt."

Izzie is mad at Alex for stealing a case that she diagnosed, but Mark tells her, "Surgery is like the Wild West. Karev's a cowboy, you're not," and that she's out of luck. Derek won't help either, so Izzie goes back to her patient and tells him that Alex has been "off his game." The ploy works: the patient asks for her to be reassigned to his case. When Alex protests, she tells him she's done "wiping up your snot and covering your ass." Derek reminds them both that he's not their roommate when they're at work. "You two ever pull that crap again on one of my cases, I will have you thrown out of the program," he warns.

A patient with a rash brings Cristina to the dermatology department. When she sees the special privileges that the department gets, including massages, she can't believe it's the same hospital. Meredith, Izzie and George all marvel at how relaxed and civil the department is, with no fighting over surgeries. At the end of the day, however, they admit how bored they'd be without life and death cases.

George passes his intern exam -- and Lexie is anxious to celebrate but is crushed when he goes to tell Izzie and Meredith first. At Joes, instead of sitting at George's table, Lexie drinks at the bar by herself.

Derek starts clearing out the home office that used to belong to Meredith's mother and comes across an old diary of hers. Meredith is not happy that he's been "snooping" and Derek offers to move out. After thinking it over, Meredith insists he should stay. "I may not always be so graceful about it, but I want you here." Meredith takes the diary and reads it aloud with Cristina.

Alex finally apologizes to Izzie for how he's treated her since his breakup with Ava. "I know I'm being an ass. But you can't be pissed off at a chick for losing her mind, so there's nobody else to be pissed at but you," and all her resentment seems to melt away.

Grey Matter

Debora Cahn on "Brave New World"...

Original Airdate: 10-16-08

To the dermatologists of the world: We love you. We really do. We think you do fine work. Important, difficult work. Life saving work. We all love you here at Grey’s Anatomy, and we’re a little concerned that you might not take tonight’s episode in the spirit it was intended. Light-hearted! No lack of respect! We kid, and we kid from love! I thought it was all going to be fine, and then I heard, one by one, that every Grey’s writer had made an appointment with their dermatologist this week, BEFORE the episode aired. Everybody wanted everything checked before we pissed off every dermatologist in the land. When one writer did it, I thought it was cute, and a little paranoid. But when the emails started pouring in… “Going to be 10 minutes late this morning, have appt with my dermatologist,” well, then I started getting worried. We love you, dermatologists. Please don’t hurt us. See, it’s Cristina that thinks surgery is harder. Not us. CRISTINA. When the writers of “The Shield” portray junkies calling police officers “f-ing pigs,” it’s not the writers who think they’re f-ing pigs, it’s just the junkies. Right? Cristina. Yang. Don’t hate us.

A word about diaries. When you find your mother’s diary, don’t read it. DON’T READ IT. I tell you this from experience. I found my mother’s diary. Not really a diary, a suitcase full of stuff she wrote for a writing class, but one of the assignments was to keep a journal, and my sister said DON’T READ IT and I read it, and I’m telling you. DO NOT READ THE DIARY. If they thought you should know, they’d have told you. And so I say to Meredith: Good on you for not reading it for a whole episode. And I say to Cristina: Lay off. She doesn’t want to read it, don’t tell her to read it. And I say to Derek: When you find the mother’s diary in the back of the closet under a pile of magazines, LEAVE IT UNDER THE PILE OF MAGAZINES. But even more importantly, I say this to the diary keepers of the world: What the hell are you thinking? You really think nobody’s gonna find that thing? You really think that the box in the back of the closet is a secure location? That an old sweater and a pair of long underwear’ll throw everyone off the trail? You’re dead, and your poor child/spouse/best friend is tasked with going through your stuff, and they see the box with the sweater and the long underwear, and they think, I’m not going to touch that pair of long underwear, it’s clearly a box of old winter clothing, let’s just close it up again and bring it right over to Goodwill. No, people. Anyone who hasn’t had a lobotomy is going to move the long underwear aside, and find the diary, and read it. And let me tell you, that little tiny lock can be picked with a bobby pin. If you feel you must put your feelings on paper, destroy those pages once a year. If you feel you must have a way to reconnect with your younger self, run the bonfire once a decade. And when you find yourself visiting an oncologist or cardiologist with some regularity, take it as a sign to THROW OUT THE DIARIES.

Ellis Grey. What were you thinking?

I know, you wish I were talking more about the episode. And the characters. Problem is, I’m in the middle of writing episode 511, and my head is totally in the middle of the season, so if I started talking about the characters, I’d inevitably wander into what’s going on with them in the middle of the season, and that’s the kind of thing that REALLY pisses Shonda off. So I’m gonna stop. Sorry. That’s it. Dermatologists and diaries.

The Emerald City Bar

Cheers to George!

CONGRATULATIONS to none other than Dr. George O’Malley, now a full-fledged resident!! That’s right folks, Georgie passed his intern exam (finally)!! Whoo-hooo!!

Just about everybody rolled through the bar tonight to buy George a drink. And, let me tell you, my man was pretty drunk by the time he left. Let’s just hope George doesn’t go home tonight and do something crazy… You know, the last time I saw O’Malley this drunk, well, we all know what happened then...

Speaking of Izzie…

It sounded like she got the best non-apology ever from Alex tonight. By the way, I bought her a shot after she called Alex a “tool.” Classic! I mean, evil spawn was acting pretty tool-ish. Everybody else was giving George high-fives and body shots and where was Alex?? Well, he was all sad and depressed and moping up at the bar – “life sucks,” “Izzie stole my surgery,” “crazy Ava’s gone,” “my cat has cancer,” wah wah!!

Anyhoo, Alex FINALLY told Izzie he was sorry for acting like a jerk. Now, he didn’t say those words, exactly, but, he sorta mumbled some roundabout ‘sorry you’re the only one I can be mean to’ speech. It was all very Alex and, well, at least it was a start. Hey, it was good enough for Izzie. She actually sat with him for a while, eventually getting Alex to laugh and – shocker – have a little fun! Good times, all around.

Now, can somebody please tell me if George and Lexie had a falling out or something? I thought they were friends. Best friends. Well, your best friend doesn’t sit on the opposite side of the bar when you pass your intern exam. And that’s exactly what Lexie did tonight. All night. She didn’t stay for very long, and – you know what – I don’t even think she said good-bye to George. Actually… I don’t even think George noticed. Uh-oh…

Derek made a special – albeit brief – surprise appearance tonight, too. It didn’t look like he was expecting to see Meredith having so much fun with her friends. Yeah, it seems like Derek didn’t want to interrupt or intrude, so he left… Meredith finished her drink and followed her man soon after…

Alright – the bar’s a mess right now. Intern Steve and company came in and went a little crazy, dousing O’Malley with silly string and beer. Needless to say, there’s a lot to clean up. Interns. Yay for George no longer being one of them…

CHEERS TO GEORGE!

The Nurse’s Station ... Debbie Does Seattle Grace

Nurse Debbie On "Brave New World"...

WHERE IS THE DERMATOLOGY SIGN????? They have gone too far this time... I saw the dynamic trio hanging around there today and wherever they go, there’s trouble. Really. I hope that they stay away from Derm. That’s my happy place. That’s where Chris, the masseuse, masseuse’s me every Friday from 10 to 11. I feel violated. My happy place has been tainted. Going back to the sign, I can’t prove it, but I KNOW they snagged it. It’ll take THREE WEEKS to get a new sign. In the meantime, how will people find Dermatology???? I guess I can make a homemade one but the original sign was so cute. So colorful. My job? Not easy.

Speaking of “easy.” I walked in on one too many conversations today about “The Motherland” and “South of the Border.” For a minute, I thought the Chief was treating us all to a vacation. Which is why I asked him. Which is why he looked at me like I had been raiding the “special cabinet” filled with special-ness. I mean, I was right. About Dr. Hahn and Torres. They are an item. It’s cute. Torres was butter fingers all day. I heard they’re going on a date tonight, which explains why Torres was so nervous and jittery and dropping things everywhere. I think Bailey didn’t see it as cute as most of us. There were times today when Bailey had a look on her face where I’m sure she wished she could go back in time and tell Callie not to talk to her about anything Hahn/sex related. I’m hoping for them though. Especially Callie. She deserves to be loved. Really loved. I hope that Hahn is gentle and patient. Callie seems strong and she is but also somewhat fragile…Just a little delicate. I don’t know what another bad relationship will do to her…

Okay, really? Alex and Izzie have to stop with the nonsense. What are we, in grade school? She actually threatened to “shoot his ass off!” “What a waste of a nice ass” was my first thought, but my second thought was “THIS IS A HOSPITAL.” I know we’re number twelve (I hear a rumor that we MAY move up to number eleven by the end of the month!) but this is a respectable place. A place of healing. Not violence. It was kind of funny to see Izzie so upset. She’s been a little out of it lately. Here but not here, so I’m glad she showed some signs of life today, albeit crazy violent signs of life. But really? They just need to kiss and make up. That tension if you ask me, is sexual tension. I would know. It’s how I usually end up in bed with someone. But seriously, they’re acting like children on the playground. They may as well throw rocks at each other.

Speaking of throwing rocks, would George PLEASE realize that Lexie has eyes for him? I’m so sick of her sniffing and staring and sniffing O’Malley some more. He’s passed his intern exam so NOW PLEASE I hope that he focuses on something else. Or rather, SOMEONE else. It’s sad already. Everyone knows how she feels and I’m tired of betting on when O’Malley will finally realize the girl is infatuated with him. I’m thinking soon. I feel it in my bones.

Okay, I’m sorry?? Do I hear, yet again, Meredith complaining about Derek? So the man wants a little more space. SO WHAT! So I’m sorry, he cooks for you and wants to talk and make your house a home for the both of you? I’m not going to go there again. I’ve said in almost EVERY blog that Meredith Grey is very lucky to have Derek Shepherd so I won’t go there again. But I will say this: It’s time to grow up. Let him love you. He means you no harm. I get that Meredith needs space. What woman doesn’t? I get that her mother’s journal and things are somewhat sacred. I so get that. But, Derek is there for her. Just her. And all the stuff she’s been carrying around for years…that load can be lighter if she just opens up. If she just trusts. If she just leaps. Don’t get me wrong, Derek moving in? A huge leap. I give her credit for it. But there is no point in moving in your boyfriend, if you’re going to treat him like a guest. Well, we’ll see what tomorrow brings for them. I think, it’ll be fine. Won’t it?

GREY'S ANATOMY - Derm Clinic: The Series

If I was a doctor at Seattle Grace, I would totally want to work in the dermatology clinic.

The derm clinic residents get to wear nice pastel scrubs, daily hand massages and back rubs, facials, and presumably all the aloe vera lotion they could possibly need. It’s mellow up there, and everyone’s blandly attractive and easy going. It’s nirvana. Dermvana, even. (Sorry)

Anyway, although Dr. Cristina Yang is fascinated by the strange, otherworldly derm clinic, she ultimately decides that she would rather fight for surgeries, make life or death decisions, and work with a bunch of people who are all sleeping with each other. Me? I’d take the derm clinic. Every morning I could slip into my scrubs, turn on some quiet Peruvian folk music, and sip a chai tea while somebody massages my pressure points. Ahhh… that would be nice.

Derm Clinic would be a totally boring TV show, though, so it’s a good thing Grey’s Anatomy focuses its attention on the Good Stuff. This season has had plenty of Good Stuff so far; I’m really enjoying every character’s storyline and think each episode has been really well written.

Some thoughts about this week’s episode, “Brave New World,” organized in perky bullet points for your ease of reading. We’re looking out for you here at Live from L.A.

*
Chief’s crackdown – So far Chief’s strict crackdown on residents’ cherry picking their assignments seems to be working. “There are no specialists at Seattle Grace.” Poor Chief’s under a lot of pressure this season, you gotta feel for him.
*
George the resident – George passed his exam and is finally a resident! Finally. He should go into pediatrics, he was good with the freaked out kid this episode.
*
Callie and Hahn – I think they have a nice chemistry, and their date was sweet. Bailey’s coded advice to Callie about uh, goin’ downtown was priceless.
*
Karev: owned – Izzie beat Alex at his own game this week, and he had a little hissy fit about the whole thing. His non-apology to her was the best he could manage. OK, now there is a guy who needs some therapy or an anger management class or one of those squeezy stress balls that you get at the office.

Grey's Anatomy: Episode 5.4 "Brave New World" Recap (Part 1/3)
Thursday, October 16, 2008
Grey's Anatomy begins tonight at the frat house. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) interrupts Derek (Patrick Dempsey) in his bedroom, where he is inappropriately naked, save for a pillow covering his privates. He's waiting for Meredith to come home. Izzie asks Derek to ask Alex for 20 bucks for the pizza she just ordered because Alex (Justin Chambers) isn't talking to her.
Meredith is helping Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) move into their beautiful new apartment. Hahn is also there assisting Callie and making Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina extremely uncomfortable. Hahn (Brooke Smith) asks Callie on a date. A date-date, actually, with perhaps some taking off of clothes at the end. Yowza.......cont’d

TV Recap: Grey's Anatomy - Brave New World - Oct 16, 2008
Meredith and Derek freak out over Ellis Grey's diary - will Derek have to move out? Izzie finally stands up for herself with Alex - cut his ass! Hahn and Torres have a lack of progress in their non-relationship - damn I'm bored! Cristina begins to expand her interests but she'll never leave surgery. George finds out the results of his exam - I can't believe he didn't pass last time. All that, and this is probably the calmest episode this season!
Meredith freaks out that Derek found her mom's diary when he was trying to find a place for his clothes. Cue an entire episode of them whining to their friends and having anxiety attacks over the memory of Mrs. Gray. ..... more

'Grey's Anatomy': Breakthroughs - Oct 17, 2008
Callie and Hahn go on a real date, Alex opens up (a little) to Izzie, and Derek and Meredith overcome an emotional stumbling block with minimal drama
Here it was, the Grey's Anatomy that I was missing last week! Tons of humor, tons of heart, only occasional surgeries, and not a leak in sight. In fact, I so enjoyed this episode that I shall recap it in the form of a love letter — no, even better, a love list. Herewith, the best things about Grey's this week:
The naked $20-bill pass Izzie knocked on Derek and Meredith's bedroom door, and a naked (but for a pillow) Derek answered. Izzie asked for cash to pay the pizza guy, complaining that Alex owed her $20 but was not speaking to her. Derek sent her into the bathroom, called Alex out and asked him for $20, and handed it to Izzie, all without putting on a stitch. Of course, this was way better visually. ‘Grey's Anatomy’: Erica and Callie go out on a date-date - Oct 17 2008
First dates are always nervefrackinwrackin’. What if it all goes horribly wrong? Even worse, what if it goes incredibly right? That could potentially lead to date No. 2 and No. 3 and a relationship and love and being vulnerable and trusting and all sorts of terrifying goodness. And really, who needs that?
Looks like Callie and Erica just might. The Seattle Grace colleagues finally braved their first same-sex date, and it was sparky and funny and full of promise. Making it to that dinner, which thankfully did not take place at Joe’s bar, provided the episode with some of its best moments. Like a palpably anxious Callie hilariously oversharing with a surprised Dr. Bailey: “There’s been kissing but no touching and what if I’m not into it? What if I’m horrible at all that stuff south of the border?” And Dr. Bailey’s equally amusing, and ultimately affecting, attempt to later calm Callie’s nerves. ‘Grey’s’ keeps Meredith out of the spotlight - Oct. 16, 2008
Feuding, dating, bloody brain surgery keep relationship drama at bay
The Izzie/Alex wars: The Meredith Grey house became the Home For Wayward Bickering Malcontents, as Alex and Izzie continued to feud. This week, they were conveniently thrown together at work as well, where trouble escalated after Izzie realized that her patient, Asymmetrical Mouth, was sporting an undiagnosed neurological problem. The minute she stepped away, Alex snaked her by fibbing to Derek that she’d abandoned the case and by taking her spot. Izzie bested him in the end, and later, he finally confessed that he’s been acting like a complete jerk to her only because he’s angry and she’s all he has. Charmer!............keep reading

Grey's Anatomy Episode Recap: "Brave New World" - Oct 17, 2008
This week Callie experiences first-date jitters as she prepares for a night out with Erica and Derek stumbles upon an interesting artifact at Mer's house, which could land him back in his trailer before the week is out. Meanwhile, Cristina uncovers a hidden gem at Seattle Grace.
The light-hearted fun and camaraderie is back! This episode definitely had elements of surprise and silly fun, which was certainly lacking last season. And not to make use of a bad pun, but by the end of this one I was seriously in stitches! Ha!
So, let's start with Callie. The former Mrs. O'Malley sure had herself worked up in a frenzy over a dinner date with Erica. While most people would probably be worrying about getting food stuck in their teeth that night, Callie went the whole nine yards and started fearing the possibility of going all the way. Now, even though Callie had already clued Sloan in on her new romance, she found herself turning to Bailey for advice instead. All I can say is the look on Bailey's face was priceless. In fact, we had to wait quite a while for Bailey's response, which coincidentally, you will, too.
Now onto George. How great was he with Duncan (Max Burkholder), the kid who didn't want to have surgery? All I could think was this kid must be the mirror image of George when he was that age. I loved it when he told the kid's dad, "I think us airplane guys just like to know how things work." And he was right, because that's all it took to get Duncan on board for a surgery of his own. Once George started showing Duncan exactly what to expect, everything was fine. But hello? Can we talk about the moment they showed Arnie (Larry Brandenburg) with his face peeled off? I thought for sure that would scar Duncan for life and send him running out of the hospital…but it didn't. The kid loved it!....... there’s more

Grey's Anatomy: Brave New World - Oct 17th 2008
(S05E04) "Karev! Give me a twenty!" - Derek
OK, before I dive into this episode, let's get the one thing that everyone will be talking about out of the way first: Callie and Hahn. Yes, yes - I know - Grey's Anatomy has a budding lesbian relationship. Based on everything I've read over the past few weeks, people are for or against it for a myriad of reasons and after tonight's "date," I'm ready to pick a side.
Let me preface all of this with my feelings on the situation as a whole. I've got no problem with a homosexual relationship on TV. Girl/girl or guy/guy - doesn't bother me one bit. Hell, Six Feet Under is one of my favorite shows of all time and that had some seriously, um, vivid stuff. Regardless, it felt natural. Granted, HBO allows for a little more freedom, but still - Callie and Hahn do not feel natural. Watching them makes me more uncomfortable than an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's just plain old awkward and I really hope it either a.) goes away fast, or b.) finds a better direction even faster. OK, moving on...................there’s more

'Grey's Anatomy': Professional vs. Personal - October 16, 09:35 PM
Like most hospital shows, Grey's Anatomy is best when it focuses on the medicine rather than the characters. Tonight made for some interesting cases -- and then focused pretty much entirely on the characters.
Unquestionably, there were some moments that saved it. Which is why I'm beginning my "Give Chandra Wilson an Emmy" campaign right now. But first, a little plot.
Spoilers, served up with some raspberry water, ahead...
At its core, tonight's show was all about the line between personal and professional -- and on the need to have boundaries between them. The fact that those lines blurred to the point of non-existence has affected people's relationships, people's careers, and the hospital's precious ranking. And something clearly has to give. Oh, and Patrick Dempsey was naked -- waiting for Meredith au naturel when she spotted her mother's diary on the nightstand. He found it when he was trying to make space for his stuff in a closet -- which sent Meredith into a tizzy about space and boundaries and what have you. But that's more of a backdrop....... more.....

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode Four, "Brave New World"

It's been a long time since Grey's Anatomy really made me laugh, but I spent the better part of this week's episode cracking up. There are a couple of "brave new worlds" to explore — dermatology, and the Wild West, and, um, Africa — and George reminds us why we liked him in the first place. To talk about it, just read more.

Derek-as-housemate was never going to be easy for anyone: Derek feels like the only adult among children with their petty problems. Meredith can't understand why Derek can't just be there without going through all of her stuff (or, more accurately, Ellis's stuff). And Izzie and Alex seem to think that having Derek as a roommate affords them a new intimacy at work. Very little of the episode actually takes place in the house, but nearly everything ties back to this new, weird living situation.

Take the Izzie/Alex feud: In this episode, he not only blows her off — he steals her patient. And that's the last straw, because she's messed with her own career enough that having someone else mess with it is really not cool. She gets some advice from Mark about treating surgery like the Wild West and shooting asses in Montana or something, but the point is, she uses her personal connections with patients for good and gets the surgery back. And then, in one of the more somber moments, she learns that Alex isn't mad at her; he just can't be mad at Rebecca, and Izzie's an easy target......more

Grey's Anatomy: Brave and New, Indeed - Friday, October 17, 2008
So I know I said the other day that I was going to blog during class. Fear not—I was not actually paying attention to my professor, but some other, more important things came up. Like picking off all my nail polish. Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t important things to be blogging about. There are, and let’s get to them.

Last night’s Grey’s was amazing.

It was written by my favorite Grey’s writer, Debora Cahn, a West Wing transplant who was the only one who could bring the banter after Aaron Sorkin left. As an aside, when I met the West Wing crew a few years back, I asked a producer if she’d written the episode we were watching being filmed; he said Debora Cahn (who had written the ep) was John Spencer’s favorite post-Sorkin writer, too. Everyone loves her; she is amazing.

RATINGS

"Grey's Anatomy": Primetime's reigning DVR champ - Oct 13, 2008
Interesting to see the networks getting more aggressive about reporting their DVR numbers.
ABC today is touting "Grey's Anatomy" (pictured above) retaining its crown as the most-DVR'd show of the season so far. The medical drama's Sept. 25 season preem numbers (18.5 million viewers, 7.4 in 18-49) don't look so soft when you add in 2.7 million viewers and 1.3 demo rating points from DVR playback viewing in the week after the premiere telecast. (The premiere ratings are based on the new industry standard of Live-Plus-Same Day, which means the aud for the initial telecast plus those that watched it on the same day of the preem.)................cont’d

DVR Playback: Grey's Thrives Most from Live + 7 Ratings - Oct 14, 2008
Better light is being shed on the ratings for the week of Sept. 22 — widely considered to be the official launch of this TV season — now that Live + 7 Nielsen numbers have come in. (Whereas the fast nationals reported every morning capture live viewing plus same-night DVR playback, Live + 7 includes any recorded show watched up to a week later.)
Among the superlatives being bandied about, ABC can tout that Grey's Anatomy and its season premiere enjoyed the largest gain of any show, adding 2.7 million total viewers once Live + 7 is factored in. That brings the the hit drama's premiere audience to 21.2 mil. With DVR marketplace penetration now at 20 percent (up eight percent year-over-year), Grey's' playback increase was up 29 percent from last season's average.
While ABC saw a total of four shows (including Housewives, Boston Legal and Brothers & Sisters) gain a million or more viewers, CBS had five — the most of any network — in that esteemed club: CSI: Miami (which added 1.47 mil to its original premiere audience of 17.3 mil), NCIS (leaping to 19.4 mil), Without a Trace, freshman hit The Mentalist and Criminal Minds.
House and Sarah Connor are giving Fox its greatest gains in DVR playback, with both shows goosing their numbers by some 15 percent. For House, that means an increase in excess of two million.

The Peacock's best boast is that Heroes, which opened to softer-than-expected numbers, saw its performance in the 18-49 demo soar 20 percent with Live + 7. The CW, meanwhile, points out that 90210 gains nearly a full rating point in the netlet's "sweet spot" of women 18-34.

Skin So Soft - Oct 15, 2008
Meredith is all stupid because her hot, naked boyfriend discovered her mother's super-secret diary while he was looking for a place to stash his clothes. Instead of behaving like a normal person, she gets all pissy and refuses to talk to him, or look at what the diary says, until she finally realizes she's being a moron and he's the most understanding boyfriend of all time. This is actually by far the most annoying part of the entire episode, and no one else really irks me. Something strange is definitely going on here.

Christina is irritated that she's been stuck in the clinic treating patients who have rashes instead of major injuries. But her journey leads her to the mythical land of dermatology, a previously unexplored part of the hospital where residents get constant massages and there is fresh fruit. The rest of the surgical residents come to marvel at this place for what seems like hours on end and no one seems to mind or care where they are... except for Christina's dying, rashy patient and George, who has been left to pick up Meredith's slack. But George works it out, showing a freaked-out kid the scariest thing ever and convinces the reluctant, pint-sized patient to stop terrorizing the hospital and go through with the surgery. And he gets the news that he's passed his exam, at which point he starts ignoring his lowly-but-loyal intern pal Lexie........more

How the West Was Won
By Lauren S | Season 5 | Episode 4 | Aired on 2008.10.15
First things first, an correction of sorts that I should have made last week -- I now know that there is a refresh button on many, many keyboards out there. I was in fact completely uninformed and wrong. Noooo! Don't worry, I'm sure it will never, ever happen again. For at least a page or two.

"In 6500 B.C., some guy looked at his sick friend and said, 'I have an idea. Why don't I drill a hole in your skull? It'll make you feel better.' And thus, surgery was born." That's quite an opening voiceover this week. Izzie is skulking down the hall and listens at a door. After some back and forth, she decides to knock super quietly, and the door is pulled open by Derek, wearing a pillow over his naughty bits. She's rather delighted, but he interrupts her gawking to say that Mere isn't there and that he's waiting for her. When he asks what she wants, she goes into a very long and ridiculous story about ordering a pizza, and Alex owing her $20, but that he won't pay her because of the crying, she thought for a moment he might be human... it's annoying, classic Izzie, I'm sure you can fill in the rest in a self-righteous voice. Derek tells her to go into the bathroom and once she's hiding, hollers for Alex to give him $20. He does without even asking and once his door is closed, he hands it over to Izzie. She's amazed and now thinks he's cool, rather than just hairy. She offers him some pizza but he slams the door in her face like I wish I could do quite often.

Mere's VO continues: "It takes a certain brand of crazy to come up with an idea like drilling into somebody's skull. But surgeons have always been a confident bunch." And a super bitchy bunch, if this show is to be believed. Cristina and Callie are moving into the new apartment with the help of Meredith and Erica. Cristina pauses in the living room with a box of her clothes, but Callie orders her to put them in her room, adding that the living room won't be a dumping ground. Has she learned nothing in the time they've already been roommates? Once she's gone, Cristina rests the box elsewhere in the living room and Erica asks acidly, "Did you not hear her?" Cristina's answer is to drop the box in the middle of the floor and leave it. Seriously, I hate that Erica is so 100% different from Callie versus the others. I get that she's an attending, but watching her be a bitch to everyone is just tiresome. She reminds me of guys I've dated and how relieved I had been to break up with them and not feel like I was having to run interference between my significant others and my friends and family. But Callie doesn't seem to mind, so here we are. Cristina makes a comment about Callie needing a new best friend. ...... lots more
