ABC PRESS RELEASE

ABC: T.R. Knight is leaving 'Grey's Anatomy' - Friday, Jun 19, 2009

Things were left mighty final for George O'Malley in the most recent 'Grey's' finale
BC is making it official: T.R. Knight won't be back on "Grey's Anatomy" next season.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes lauded Knight on Friday as an "incredibly talented" actor and wished him the best in his future work.

Knight played Dr. George O'Malley on the hospital drama. In the season finale that aired in May, George had been severely injured in an accident and appeared to be at death's door - or beyond.

Knight's role on "Grey's Anatomy" had been diminished this season and the actor had asked to be let out of a contract that still had three years left to go.

In a statement, Knight said the decision to leave wasn't easy and said he'd miss his fellow cast members and the show's crew. He also thanked fans for their enthusiastic support.

Spoiler Chat: Who's Taking a Break From Grey's Anatomy? - Mon., Jul. 6, 2009
Amanda in Miami: Since Grey's Anatomy is dropping castmembers like flies, any chance Melissa George could return as Sadie Harris?
"I don't think so," Melissa tells us of a possible return engagement for Sadie on Grey's Anatomy. "I think she did so much damage that she needs to go." If Sadie's a no-go, hit the comments with who else you would want to see return in her place.

Grace: Has Grey's Anatomy figured out how they're going to work around Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave yet?
Erm. Grey's is such a hairy show to report on. We'll tell you this, and maybe you'll forgive us for taking the long way around. A source tells us that ABC didn't want Rachel Griffiths (who gave birth to her third child on June 21) to skip any episodes of Brothers & Sisters and that production was pushed back a week to accommodate her maternity leave. What does that mean for Grey's? Well, if ABC doesn't want a Griffiths-less B&S, you could assume (just assume) that they really wouldn't want a Pompeo-less Grey's Anatomy. Pompeo's due this fall though, so there would be no real way to push back production. Solution? Well, we're just spit-balling ideas here, because no one's confirming anything, but you could do what our source tells us is a possible scenario for dealing with Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave: When E.P. gets back from her baby break, shoot a bunch of Meredith Grey scenes in succession, and then have your editors work overtime to slot her scenes into the episodes that were shot/produced before her return, therefore giving the audience the full Meredith Grey experience with no gaps.

Cal in Orlando, Fla.: Is it true that Chandra Wilson will be directing an episode of Grey's Anatomy this season?
Yep, sources confirm that Chandra Wilson will be directing an episode of Grey's Anatomy this season, although we've actually heard that another actor was negotiating to direct an episode of Grey's Anatomy this season, as well as make a couple of other tweaks to his/her contract to allow him/her more creative and personal freedom.

Grey's Costar to T.R. Knight: Please Don't Go! - June 4, 2009
Justin Chambers doesn't want T.R. Knight to hang up his scrubs just yet.

"T.R. is an amazing actor and I want him to be there as long as I'm on there," Chambers, who plays Dr. Alex Karev on Grey's Anatomy, told us the other night at the Salvatore Ferragamo benefit for L'Aquila Earthquake victims. "He's wonderful to work with."

Besides, Knight's character, Dr. George O'Malley, has so much growing to do...

"That's one great thing about the show," Chambers said. "All the characters have so much to explore. The audience followed these young interns coming into this hospital and now they're residents, but they have more to learn as far as surgery, social skills and manners."

Former Grey's star Melissa George says she's not convinced that Knight is definitely leaving. No matter what happens, she said, "He will go on to bigger and better things."

Jessica Capshaw: ‘Grey’s’ Creator Doesn’t ‘Burden Us’ With Futures Of Heigl, Knight
While fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” have been left to speculate on the future of original castmembers Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight, some of their co-stars are no better off.

Access Hollywood caught up with Jessica Capshaw, who plays Dr. Arizona Robbins on the ABC show, to ask her if she had any insight as to the futures of Izzie Stevens and George O’Malley.

“I will absolutely be quoted as saying [series creator] Shonda Rhimes is an absolute genius because she doesn’t tell anyone anything,” Jessica said.

And in fact, not knowing what lies ahead on the show was just fine with Jessica.

“That’s actually very generous of her because she doesn’t want to burden us with knowing and not being able to tell you – or telling you!” she added.

However, Jessica’s future with the show also remains up in the air – she revealed she has yet to receive her renewal letter.

“Knock on wood,” she said.

The actress, who joined the show in 2008, was hopeful she would be returning to Seattle Grace, along with the rest of the cast.

“It’s so fantastic. It’s funny that there’s so much drama surrounding the show, because you’ve never met a better group of more decent people,” she told Access. “It’s as normal as it gets.”

Ask Matt: Can’t We Just Leave Grey’s Alone?

Question: I’ve read about T.R. Knight being released from his contract at Grey's Anatomy, and while I wish him the best, I think it's too bad because a storyline centered on George's recovery would have given him lots of really great material. Especially since he has frequently been played for comic relief in the past, it would have been interesting to see him do something with enormous dramatic weight. However, the other thing that I felt surprised me: an amazing pity for the show.

I remember back to the fall of 2005. It had been a solid but moderate hit in the spring, I started watching reruns over the summer (when ABC still gave us those) and kept telling everyone how wonderful and beautifully written this show was, even though most people I knew were turning their TVs off after Desperate Housewives ended. Grey's was my little show that could. And then the Super Bowl episode changed everything. For the remainder of the second season and the beginning of season three, the show kept its quality up while suddenly becoming a much bigger deal. Then came the Isaiah Washington debacle, and shortly after that, you could see the show slip ever so gradually in quality, as though the writers were cracking under the strain of all the attention. Then came Gizzie and ... well, you know the rest.

Obviously, in this day and age of Internet gossip, there's going to be a lot of media coverage of any show that becomes a massive hit. But Grey's especially seems a fond target for this kind of media firestorm over and over. It almost seems that the media wants the show to fail in order to have a scapegoat. And as much as I wanted more people to watch prior to the Super Bowl episode, now that it is a megahit, I wish that it could be left alone. Even at times when it makes huge misfires, there's still some good stuff going on to partially offset that (Alex/Jane Doe keeping the show watchable during Gizzie, Owen/Christina during Izzie/Denny, etc.), but it feels like you can see the stress from the media attention affecting the show more than any other series in prime time right now. And I wish it could get back to a place where Shonda Rhimes and her staff only need to worry about producing quality TV instead of all this other crap going on which causes their behind-the-scenes issues to hang out to dry for the media. I'm not sure there's really a question in here, but I felt like writing in to say this in defense of the show. Why has everyone decided to pick on Grey's, and why so constantly? It probably would make itself into a better show if we all laid off it.—Jake

Matt Roush: Success on TV truly is a double-edged sword, and there’s no doubt that the Internet culture has merely inflamed the hype-em-&-hate-em nature of the entertainment media. There’s also no question that Grey’s Anatomy invited much of the criticism and negative press on itself. Many of the backstage messes (the Isaiah debacle, the sudden ouster of Dr. Hahn) were at least as troubling as the various misbegotten storylines culminating in last season’s bottom-scraping sleeping-with-Denny’s-ghost mess. But look at it from another angle. The passion generated by this show, pro and con, at the very least indicates that people still care deeply about these characters. I’d argue that it would be far worse if we ignored it and didn’t get bent out of shape when the show hits the skids (as in the Denny storyline) or, conversely, rejoice when the show does things right (as in the last run of episodes, which hit a number of emotional sweet spots). Would Grey’s benefit if everyone let up on it and just let the writers get back to work without worrying about the occasional overreaction? Maybe so, but that’s not a world that exists anymore, and I’m not sure they’d like it if it was. As for George and T.R. Knight, it’s probably a relief for all parties involved to let him die a hero’s death. There didn’t seem to be that much room for the character to grow anymore, and a painful rehabilitation might have just felt that way dramatically. Personally, I’m thrilled to get the chance to see him back on stage in the months to come. Like David Hyde Pierce, he’s done his time on TV for now, and can go back to his first love.

Question: I'm really surprised to see headlines on several entertainment sites about Grey's Anatomy actors and their contracts. I'm one who doesn't like to read spoilers and so I'm frustrated by these headlines. Is this just the way things are in the entertainment world? Is it only avoidable by staying away from any and all entertainment news??—Cyndi

Matt Roush: I truly feel for all those who would love to enjoy their TV shows spoiler-free. It’s not easy, and it’s especially tricky when legitimate news breaks (as in the case of the Grey’s contract negotiations) that impacts the future of a show and its key characters. This is nothing new, though. As long as I’ve been on the beat (dating back to the glory days of prime-time soaps, when stars from Dallas and Dynasty made headlines on a regular basis), entertainment reporters have chased scoops regarding actors’ contracts from season to season, and it was probably inevitable in this case (especially considering the cliffhanger) that when news broke, you’d have to be living in a cave to stay shielded. All I can say is: Sympathies.

This aspect of Grey’s media coverage inspired another response from the loquacious Jake who provided our opening topic: “When are producers going to realize that now that we're in the Internet age, any cliffhangers relative to a character's mortality are unlikely to work as effectively as they might want them to? While it was certianly a huge shock when George was revealed as the John Doe bus victim, now that the news of Knight's release from his contract has appeared, we know George is dead, because the show is simply above recasting him with another actor. Similarly, Damages' first season capper with Frobisher being shot was a shock when it happened, but FX promptly announced when doing press for season two that Ted Danson would be back and used his picture in promotional images and promos, effectively revealing the character lived before we were meant to find out about it in the second season premiere. (For that matter, Danson's name in the opening credits did that too, right before he showed up at the end of the first commercial break.) I'm not sure of a solution to this problem, but it does weaken the story points. I read ‘small’ spoilers but generally avoid big ones, and while in this case the contract information was bound to leak out, it is still kind of upsetting that I didn't get to find out about George's death in a meaningful way through the show.”

Today's News: Our Take - Mega Buzz on Grey's - Jun 2, 2009
Any scoop to get us Mer-Der fans through the dog days of summer? Perhaps some "baby talk" about Grey's writing in Ellen Pompeo's pregnancy? — Hillary
MATT: Both Chyler Leigh and I are of the mind that Grey's Anatomy would be hard-pressed to accommodate Pompeo's pregnancy, if only because of the timing. "As far as I know they are not [writing it in]," Leigh told me, pointing out that by the time the ABC serial resumes production, "Ellen will be, like, seven months [along]." The only way I see it happening — and at least one source allows, "It could go either way" — is if Season 7 picks up five or six months after the recent finale. Such a jump would also allow poor George time to heal and look like recast Eddie Cibrian. (I kid!)

If Fox is serious about Fringe (and aren't we all), why is it forcing it to compete against CSI, Grey's Anatomy and The Office on Thursdays? — Anita
MICKEY: At first blush, moving Fringe to such a powerhouse night would appear to be a suicide mission. But Fox entertainment prez Kevin Reilly lays out his strategy thusly: "[CSI and Grey's] are two still-terrific appointment shows, but they're down. They are not consuming all the oxygen at 9 o'clock" he insists. "[Fringe] got a huge amount of buzz coming out of the last batch of episodes ... and is a real alternative to both of those shows. It's not an overlapping audience." Oh yeah, Kev? Tell that to my DVR, which is already groaning at the prospect of Thursday nights this fall.

Emmy Roundtable: Showrunners - June 9, 2009
How do TV's busiest showrunners keep their jobs and their sanity?
The showrunner is the workhorse of the television business, acting as the head writer, producer, casting director, editor, sound mixer, studio liaison, network communicator, hand-holder and surrogate parent. The Hollywood Reporter's Ray Richmond and Matthew Belloni recently gathered six of the best in the business -- Alan Ball (HBO's "True Blood"); Greg Daniels (NBC's "The Office," "Parks and Recreation"); Katie Jacobs (Fox's "House"); Jenji Kohan (Showtime's "Weeds"); Shonda Rhimes (ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," "Private Practice"); and Matthew We.iner (AMC's "Mad Men") -- to explain how they wear so many different hats.

Spoilerphilia and Spoilerphobia: Showrunners Talk Surprises

http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2009/06/spoilerphilia_and_spoilerphobi.html
In the clip above, they express frustration about the proliferation of spoilers -- leaked information about what's going to happen on episodes that haven't aired yet. (This is indeed the traditional definition of a spoiler; it is only much more recently that the term has, for some, taken on the new meaning of "information about a show that you personally haven't chosen to watch yet and perhaps never will, but it would be great if nobody would say anything about it in case you eventually do.")

Their varied reactions are fascinating. Ball (along with The Office creator Greg Daniels) is annoyed by the effect of spoiler-hunters on the logistics of filming, W*iner seems affronted by the disruption of his creative process when people don't digest the show at the pace he intends, and Shonda Rhimes -- Shonda Rhimes, of all people -- professes to just not understand, as she puts it, "why spoilers make people happy."

W*iner goes on to insist that people don't actually enjoy reading spoilers; they are only fun for the people who are doing the revealing, who are in fact making everyone else miserable. That's true in the case of people being involuntarily spoiled (a major problem for, in particular, all online communities where serial shows are discussed).

But there is also a massive, thriving community of people desperate to be voluntarily spoiled, and it's fruitless to pretend that part of the challenge isn't that you're trying to defeat simple curiosity -- the fact that people are impatient and don't like waiting.

Furthermore, if you were looking for a defender of spoiler-free living, you would not logically go to Shonda Rhimes.

The tease and the long history of string-pulling, after the jump...

What makes Rhimes such an unlikely and seemingly disingenuous advocate of the "I don't understand why spoilers make people happy" theory is her long history of teasing (and teasing and teasing) future episodes to play on the exact impatience that she claims not to understand. The Grey's Anatomy writers have a blog, in fact, and before the last episode of the season, she wrote this:

We're going dark, people. Why? Because next week's episodes (two in one night) are so explosive and cliff-hanger-y that we, the writers, have all agreed that we can't even talk about them.

If you truly didn't understand the mentality that leads to surprise-busting, you wouldn't promote your own show with phrases like "explosive and cliff-hanger-y." If you know why "cliff-hanger-y" is a good word to pin on your own season finale, then you know why spoilers make (some) people happy.

Fans have always craved the cycle of suspense and resolution; that's the reason the word "cliffhanger" was invented a few years before the Internet started trying to figure out whether Meredith and McDreamy were going to get married or not. The fact that they don't always want to play out that cycle on the schedule set by the show isn't all that baffling.

Certainly, if there had been a popular Internet at the time of "Who Shot J.R.?", it would have been on the case, trying desperately to beat the Dallas writers to the punch.

What's interesting is that nowhere in this discussion do the showrunners acknowledge that the rise of spoilerphilia has led to an equal and opposite rise in spoilerphobia. The people trying to ruin every surprise in great detail are met at every turn by people who are insistent that they don't want to know information that would once have been considered totally innocuous, like what was shown in the "Next week on..." previews, published titles for upcoming episodes, whether a particular actor has been cast in a particular show, and so forth.

This is really the trick of managing your own fandom. To make spoilerphiles happy, you have to feed them at least enough information to keep them speculating and doing frame-by-frame analysis of the previews; they need kindling, and that's what it is when Rhimes leaks information about her own show (information, that in that specific case, turned out to be highly misleading if not an outright lie, interestingly) (don't read it you've been freeze-dried and stuck in a bottle and haven't watched this season of Grey's Anatomy yet).

But to make spoilerphobes happy, you can't reveal so much that absolutely everybody unavoidably knows what's coming. People who hate spoilers really hate them -- I have one friend I firmly believe would cut all ties with me if I accidentally gave away the results of so much as an episode of American Idol before he watched it.

The more online spoiler specialists you have and the more easily information travels, the greater the tension between the camps. So I leave it to you: where do you come down? Do you read spoilers? Does it depend on the show? Did you have an "explosive and cliff-hanger-y" weekend? (Okay, you don't have to answer the last one.)

Tips for surving the 'Grey's Anatomy' summer hiatus

May 21 will mark the first Thursday of the summer with no new episode of 'Grey's Anatomy'. The premiere date for season six hasn't been announced yet, so the countdown until the next new episode can't even begin. But that doesn't mean there still aren't ways to get your Seattle Grace fix over the summer. Here are some suggestions on ways to pass your time until Meredith and the gang are back on your TV:

1. Relive the first five seasons: Summer breaks are the perfect time for a 'Grey's' refresher course. Seasons 1-4 are all available on DVD, and season five will be available on Sept. 15. If you want another chance to catch the last five episodes of season five before then, they are still streaming for free at the ABC.com Grey's Anatomy page.

2. Read the Grey's Anatomy blogs on ABC.com: The ABC website offers up plenty of online reading material for 'Grey's' fans who just can't get enough. There's the Emerald City Bar blog, which tells the tales of Joe the bartender; the Nurse's Station blog, which is billed as "juicy gossip from Seattle Grace's nurse Debbie"'; and last but not least, Grey Matter, which provides an in depth look at each episode from the show's writers (oddly, there's nothing up on the finale yet). These blogs may not be updated regularly during the summer, but there's plenty of old material to keep you busy.

3. Host a trivia party: Everyone's looking to save money these days, so why not spend a night in with your fellow 'Grey's' fans, engaging in a friendly challenge to see who knows the most about your favorite show? There's a Grey's Anatomy Trivia Board game from Cardinal Industries available at Amazon.com, or you can make up your own game using flash cards and a little creativity. You're sure to have a great night in with your friends. Just don't forget the tequila!

4. Visit Seattle: If you are looking to travel this summer, why not check out the scenic, culturally rich city where the show takes place? Just because the characters never get to leave the hospital and enjoy the city doesn't mean that you can't! Be sure to check out Examiner.com/Seattle for all the insider info you'll need to help plan your trip.

5. Catch up on 'Private Practice': Have you been missing Dr. Addison Montgomery since she said goodbye to Seattle Grace at the end of season three? If so, then you'll want to check out this 'Grey's' spin-off, which follows Addison's new life in sunny California, as well as the stories of her colleagues at the Oceanside Wellness Center.

6. Play the 'Grey's Anatomy' video game: Available for Nintendo DS, Wii, or your Windows PC, this game by Ubisoft was created with the help of the show's writers and producers to give you the chance to participate in a brand new "Grey's' story. You get to perform surgeries, write your own dialogue for the characters, and even make decisions that will affect relationships and hospital dynamics. This is perfect for the 'Grey's' fan who always wishes they could truly get inside the characters' heads.

7. Take a 'Grey's Anatomy' Facebook quiz: Ever wonder which 'Grey's' character you are most like? A quick apps search on Facebook will lead you to a selection of quizzes you can take to answer that very question.

8. Learn to knit: Both Meredith and Izzie have been seen practicing this craft in order to relieve stress, kill time, and improve dexterity in their hands. Izzie even knitted a fetching green scarf for Bailey before going under the knife for her first brain surgery. Washington D.C., Phoenix, Baltimore, Atlanta, New York, and Boston have their own Knitting Examiners to help you get started.

9. Create 'Save Izzie' and 'Save George' fan art: 'Grey's' fans have always shown their creativity through things like Internet banners, music video mash-ups and photo collages. This summer, fans can use that creativity to send a message to Shonda Rhimes to reconsider her plans for their favorite imperiled character.

10. Check the Grey's Anatomy Examiner every day for breaking 'Grey's' news and other fun stuff!

'Grey's' exclusive: Leading lady snags promotion!
Chandra Wilson will be directing an episode next season. Grey's Anatomy resumes production in two weeks, so that can only mean one thing: Time to get our season 6 scoop on!

The latest episode of Ausiello TV features news of a major (and thus-far unprecedented) promotion for an original female castmember.

Chandra Wilson lights up Broadway, admits to uncertain future with ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ – June 9, 2009

'Grey's Anatomy' star Chandra Wilson has taken New York City by storm. After introducing a performance from the cast of 'Jersey Boys' at Sunday night's Tony Awards, (check out her stunning red carpet look.) Wilson made her debut in the role of Matron "Mama" Morton on Broadway in 'Chicago' Monday night. Her 'Grey's' co-stars T.R. Knight, Sara Ramirez and James Pickens Jr. were all in the audience to show their support.

But despite her recent Broadway success, Wilson shocked audiences last week by confessing to some uncertainty in regards to her future with 'Grey's' to the ladies of 'The View.' When asked if she'd be returning for the show's sixth season, Wilson replied, "I'm waiting for my Disney letter saying, 'you have the option to come back." According to US Weekly, Wilson went on to say the company has until June 20 to send the letter.

But Wilson can at least take comfort in the fact that she's not the only 'Grey's' star in this position. As of this date, none of the cast have renewed their contracts. The events of this year's season finale left the fates of T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl up in the air, but Jessica Capshaw, who plays Dr. Arizona Robbins, has also said she is waiting to receive her letter- and hopes it will arrive. "Knock on wood," she told Access Hollywood.

But Capshaw also has a positive take on series creator Shonda Rhimes' strict secrecy regarding all aspects of the show. "That's actually very generous of her because she doesn't want to burden us with knowing and not being able to tell you- or telling you!" she said to Access.

Chandra Wilson Waiting For “Option” to Return to Grey’s Anatomy – June 4, 2009

Although most Grey's Anatomy fans are anxiously awaiting the fates of T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl next season, one cast member is nervous about her own.

Chandra Wilson, who plays Dr. Bailey on the hit ABC show, is still waiting to re-sign her contract to come back next season.

"You know, I don't have the slightest idea!" she said on The View Thursday when asked if she knew who was leaving the show. "I know nothing!"

In fact, she lamented that she still hasn't received word on whether she'll be back on the show.

"I'm waiting for my Disney letter saying, 'You have the option to come back,'" she said.

The company has until June 20 to send it, she added.

After speculation that Heigl's character would be killed off in the season finale of Grey's, her and Knight's characters appeared to have died. Still, show creator Shonda Rhimes hasn't divulged any information on next season's cast or story lines.

Eric

The great Dane

When he struts on to the set of Grey's Anatomy, it's apparent Eric Dane has embraced his "ladies' man" reputation.

As male members of the Grey's crew go about setting up cameras, lights and sound equipment for a scene to be shot on the medical drama, their female counterparts stop in their tracks, eyelashes aflutter, when Dane swaggers past.

Life has been like this for Dane since his towel-clad body cemented his nickname, McSteamy, after his debut on the show.

Co-star Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey even had a running gag about Dane on set. Dempsey said Dane, simply by wearing that strategically placed towel on the show, had a pin-up boy status that wasn't going to do much for his acting career, but would at least lead to a big product-endorsement deal.

When Dane is told Dempsey has been willing media to ask Dane if he has a marketing, calendar or billboard campaign on the way, a smiling Dane says: "Oh, he's (Dempsey) been talking about the Bed, Bath & Beyond (product) campaign, has he?

"He likes to say that. He likes to ask me when my calendar's coming out."

Dane's on-screen antics might be a hit with women, but he's not eliciting the same response from men.

A recent Grey's episode, featuring a hot and heavy scene with Dane and co-star Chyler Leigh, sparked a flurry of queries on internet search engines by worried men.

According to search engine Google, two of the three most searched terms at the time were "pen*le fracture" and "broken pen*s". This followed an episode, titled Stairway to Heaven, in which Dane's character, Mark Sloan, suffered a fractured appendage after having sex in the on-call room with Lexie Grey (Leigh).

Off-screen, Dane adds, he's being blamed for women going cold on their male partners.

"Some guy walked up to me in a restaurant the other day and told me he didn't get any action any more from his wife. He was joking about it, but I guess there was a little truth in it," Dane says.

Did Dane ask the guy for his wife's number?

"No. He had his shirt unbuttoned and a big gold chain. I didn't ask him anything. My wife (actor Rebecca Gayheart) thinks it's funny."

Asked how he really feels about the sex-symbol tag, Dane smiles and says: "Well, it doesn't suck. I honestly believe my name (McSteamy) became popular because McDreamy was already popular and I became a counterpart -- rose to that atmosphere. You know what? I don't mind it. It changed my life. I haven't seen the downside to the nickname yet."

Dane is acutely aware, however, he must garner respect for his acting talents, not only his physique, if he's to build on his solid body of work as an actor. He believes Grey's writers have been working on giving Sloan substance.

"There's something I hope continues to progress . . . you see different sides to these guys. They have 11 or 12 characters to service around here, so it doesn't happen all at once."

There's no doubt Grey's turns actors into stars. Just look at what the Channel 7 drama has done for Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl. But something strange also happens when a performer is cast to play a guest role on the show. More often than not the character becomes so popular that a short story arc is extended and actors find themselves signing on as regulars.

It happened to Kate Walsh (Addison), Dane and Chyler Leigh, whose previous credits included North Shore, 7th Heaven, and The Practice.

"It's an interesting experience coming into an existing show," Leigh says. "This is actually my second time doing it. The first time was on The Practice and I came in for their last season before they split. That was a much different experience. Here I've had such an incredible experience."

Leigh has every right to feel blessed. Not only is she starring on a hit show but she's also a happily married mum of three. She gave birth to a girl, Anniston Kae, on May 7. Leigh and husband Nathan West's other children are Noah and Taelyn.

Leigh, 27, has done well for someone whose life seemed on an inexorable downward spiral when she was battling drugs.

"I went through a very experimental drug phase," Leigh said in a US interview in November. "I'm five-six and a half and got down to 103. It was quite scary. When I was 19, doing drugs and drinking, I ended up getting really sick. I couldn't hold food in my body. You could see my bones everywhere. Nathan and I thought, 'We could keep going down this road, but it's not going to lead us anywhere good'."

After turning 20, she kicked her bad habits, improved her diet and married West.

Grey's, meanwhile, looks set for a shake-up. Foundation cast member T.R. Knight (George O'Malley) appears set to leave the show. Castmate Heigl (Izzie Stevens) is likely to stay, despite rumours of her wanting out.

Katherine

Mega Buzz on Grey's - Jun 23, 2009
Color me shocked that Katherine Heigl isn't leaving Grey's Anatomy. Is it possible we're being duped in some way? — Krista
MATT: I must say that the lack of fanfare surrounding ABC's confirmation of Heigl's status — especially when juxtaposed with the flurry of official statements regarding T.R. Knight's departure — made me raise one of my overgrown eyebrows. "Sure, she's staying... for just one more episode," I cynically hypothesized. But one of my best sources insists that this is not a case of clever semantics, and that Heigl's Izzie will have a significant presence in the fall.

Will Big-Screen LifeGrey's Shift? Interrupt Katherine Heigl's - Jun 24, 2009

Katherine Heigl has signed on to star in and produce the big-screen drama Life As We Know It — but Grey's Anatomy fans needn't worry about this new gig impacting Heigl's recently confirmed return to the ABC series.

Heigl — who is currently filming the Lionsgate thriller Five Killers, opposite Ashton Kutcher — is due back on the Grey's set in late July, now that her option for Season 6 has been picked up. And while a rep for the actress was unable to comment on the anticipated production start for Life As We Know It, it is unlikely the film commitment will affect her Grey's work. On multiple occasions — and as recently as this spring — Heigl has simultaneously juggled film roles and her portrayal of Dr. Isobel Stevens.

Life As We Know It revolves around a woman and a man whose respective best friends die in a car accident. Following the tragedy, they are left to share in caring for the deceased's orphaned daughter. Everwood creator Greg Berlanti will direct.

Heigl will next be seen on the big screen opposite Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth, opening July 24.

Katherine Heigl back at 'Grey's Anatomy - 'June 18, 2009
Actress' option on ABC drama was picked up, sources say
It has been a real-life cliffhanger bigger than the one faced by her character Izzie in the season finale of "Grey's Anatomy": Will co-star Katherine Heigl return to "Grey's" next season?

Sources have said that Heigl's option on the medical drama has been picked up, meaning she will continue on the show.

The news comes on the heels of word leaking that Heigl's pal on the show, T.R. Knight, won't return next season.

ABC would not confirm any casting for its flagship drama series.

The lives of Heigl's and Knight's characters were left hanging in the balance in the "Grey's" season finale last month.

Izzie, diagnosed with stage IV metastatic cancer in the brain and liver, underwent successful brain surgery but lost her short-term memory and flat-lined during the final minutes of the finale.

Knight's character, Dr. George O'Malley, was hit by a bus.

Heigl has had a somewhat rocky tenure on "Grey's."

The series made her a household name, earned her an Emmy in 2007 and launched her movie career. But tensions began to creep in, escalating in the summer when Heigl pulled herself out of Emmy consideration, attributing her decision to a lack of good stories for her character.

She also had been rumored to have lobbied for a release from the show to focus on her booming feature career.

But that was a year ago. This past season, the story line of Izzie's cancer was central to the show's creative comeback. Additionally, the actress has said publicly that she wants to continue on the show.

Kevin

New McKidd in town

Thirteen years may have passed but Scottish actor Kevin McKidd is still recognisable as Tommy, the star athlete turned down-and-out junkie in Trainspotting.

These days though McKidd is enjoying his role as Dr. Owen Hunt in Grey's Anatomy, especially because he is romantically involved with Cristina Yang (played by Sandra Oh).

"It's really fun being the new kid on the block, and so far everyone has been really nice to me. They didn't have to be, so I'm grateful for that. I expected it to be different" he laughs.

"As soon as I heard I'd be working with Sandra Oh, that was the main pull to come to Grey's Anatomy," he says. On the set the actors are dressed in full scrubs and surrounded by medical paraphernalia and he quickly discovered one of the benefits of working on a hospital set.

"There are beds everywhere and that is always good. It's a really big plus," he laughs. "Not that I'm sleeping, don't get me wrong! I'm just meditating."

And a lie down is just what the doctor ordered after a hard day at the office.
"As far as working with the medical equipment and the jargon, it's really tough. I was nervous. In fact, I was terrified the first time I had a big dialogue scene, and you can see the sweat trickling down from underneath my cap," he says. "It's weird. It's like patting your head and rubbing your stomach."

Now in season five, his relationship with Yang is a little troubled and his personality is somewhat of a mystery. "I don't think their relationship is going to be easy. It gets explosive between them, but Owen has a lot of stuff going on right now." Hunt is dealing with his post traumatic stress disorder after his experience in the Iraq War. "It's a touchy subject and he doesn't want to drag her into his hellish world. He should try and a have a little more fun, but I think that will come back. I keep meeting people in the supermarkets who say, 'We miss the Owen Hunt from the premiere episode.' But I assure them that I think we'll get back to that guy."

His real life is much simpler. Living in Los Angeles, McKidd, 35, has been married to Jane Parker since 1999 and they are raising two kids: Joseph, 9, and Iona, 7.

Hailing from Elgin, Scotland, he says. "Of course I miss the rain. I miss the cold and the grumpy people," he laughs. "No, seriously, I miss my mum and dad. I do miss Scotland a lot and have been really homesick recently. I miss all the crazy characters from my hometown, but I'm happy in LA and I'm enjoying myself."
And now he's surrounded by all things medical, has he picked up any invaluable information he didn't know before? "Well, I knew that Advil helps many things. But that's the sum of my medical knowledge, I'm afraid to say.

Patrick Dempsey Talks With News 13 After Racing At Daytona - Monday, July 06, 2009

Is Derek Shepherd a supporting character? - Jun 19th 2009
With the Emmy announcements inching closer, one for your consideration caught me off guard. Patrick Dempsey is not a Lead Actor this year. He is throwing his name into the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. Why is Patrick Dempsey announcing that he is a supporting character? I think several storylines this season of Grey's Anatomy (especially his breakdown and his proposal) are lead actor moments.

Is Patrick Dempsey scared of his competitors? Probably. ABC wants to get an Emmy in any form or fashion and they are probably clearing the path for Lost or Brothers and Sisters to make a stab for lead.

Thinking about it, it's not a bad choice. Grey's Anatomy can't beat Breaking Bad, In Treatment, Dexter, Mad Men, or House; all of which were nominated last year for Lead Actor. According to the official Disney/ABC for your consideration website, the two episodes that Grey's is showcasing are "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Stairway to Heaven." I am shocked to think that the end half of the season wasn't considered, but both episodes do display some strong interaction between Meredith and Derek. Did Derek take a supporting role on the two episodes? His mother was in one and when family members start showing up, I usually consider the character more important.

If Patrick Dempsey is considered a supporting actor, then all of the actors and actresses on Grey's should be considered supporting actors. Even if Ellen Pompeo is the titular character, Grey's Anatomy is an ensemble cast where every main character gets a storyline at one point or another. Maybe it's Ellen Pompeo that is the problem, being the only actress trying for a spot as Lead Actress. In the history of the show, no one has ever gotten nominated for Lead Actor or Actress in a Drama. Dempsey will probably have a better shot, or at least a nomination, but still won't win.

Even if Grey's Anatomy is a sappy television program that pales in comparison to deeper and darker shows like Mad Men and Dexter, does that mean that it should sell itself short? I think that Patrick Dempsey grounds the show from the show's high school mentality. Is he deserving of an Emmy? I would give him one because he has to deal with the inflated ego of Katherine Heigl. She really shouldn't have won that Emmy.

Demsey Race Team #9 at Le Mans with El Grado
Dempsey, Foster and Kitch Persevere For Ninth Place Finish in
24 Hours of Le Mans Debut with Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle

Dempsey and Foster Carry Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle Ferrari F430 GT to Finish

LE MANS, France (June 14, 2009) – Teammates Patrick Dempsey and Joe Foster carried the No. 81 Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle Ferrari F430 GT they shared with Don Kitch Jr. to a solid ninth-place GT class finish in this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans where all three drivers were making their debuts in the classic endurance race.

Dempsey, who was at the wheel for more than nine hours in one of the best performances of his career, drove the No. 81 Ferrari across the finish line and received an ovation from the enthusiastic French crowd second only to overall winners and national favorites Peugeot.

“The last hour I was just focused on not making a mistake,” said Dempsey who moved the Ferrari into ninth place in the highly competitive GT class a little over two hours from the finish. “You felt like that through the entire night, anyway, but even more so at the end. Around the last 10 minutes you could see the pace of everybody slowing down and the celebration started. Then it was just such a relief.”

Dempsey has been racing with, and more recently, motorsports business partners with Foster for six years. At Le Mans this weekend the duo combined for one of their most impressive and certainly longest races after Kitch fell ill with a severe head and chest cold earlier this week. After a pair of opening stints early in the race, Kitch’s only other shift came on Sunday morning. Dempsey and Foster combined to drive for more than 20 hours.

“This is like a win,” Dempsey said. “To be here and be in the top 10, it’s like a win to me. I have never driven so much in my entire life. I battled to stay focused. We knew that Don was sick in the last 12 to 15 hours and we had to double up. It was just unbelievable and this is Joe’s life-long dream.”

Foster did reach a goal he set as young child. He drove well over 10 hours at Le Mans and was consistently the team’s fastest driver.

“I feel like we climbed a big mountain just to be here,” Foster said. “There are so many friend and family members from when I was a little kid in go karts to now who helped me do this. This was an amazing experience and it exceeded all of our expectations. This was my dream and I am just so grateful to have shared this with Patrick. We had a plan that we followed regardless of what anybody else said or did and that was what worked.”

All three drivers frequently talked about how much of a learning experience Le Mans was and Dempsey, for one, is walking away with quite a bit of knowledge.

“I will take away so much from this race that I will now apply to every other race that I am in,” Dempsey said. “It comes to pacing and just being smart when it comes to endurance racing. You have to find a pace and not get caught up in other people’s races.”

While Kitch’s time behind the wheel was limited due to his unforeseen illness, the 24 Hours of Le Mans still represented a victory for his Team Seattle/Racing for Children program. More than a quarter million dollars was raised from donations and lap pledges up to and during the race.

“I felt terrible the last few days but deep down I am so happy for what we were able to accomplish for the children,” said Kitch, who is planning to retire from racing at the end of this season. “This program has been a big part of our lives and I am happy we were able to bring it to Le Mans.”

The No. 81 Ferrari ran consistently and competitively the entire race and was prepared by AF Corse, the top European sports car team. The Italian-based organization was as professional as any team the drivers have ever raced with and the Ferrari only had minor issues that could be described as typical in endurance racing.

The No. 81 Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle Ferrari was one of 17 entries in the GT2 class. Support for the effort came from El Grado Spirits, LLC, SeeLiveSurgery.tv, @SportsTV and Racing for Children in support of the Seattle Children’s Hospital and French partner hospital Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque.

Next up for Dempsey Racing is next Saturday’s EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Dempsey and Foster will race the No. 40 El Grado/Dempsey Racing Mazda RX-8 in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series GT class.

TR Knight

‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ T.R. Knight head for the stage –in L.A., not N.Y. – June 19, 2009

Culture Monster was in heavy denial when we first heard rumors that T.R. Knight would be leaving “Grey’s Anatomy” after five seasons on the ABC show. But, sure enough, “Grey's” executive producer and creator Shonda Rhimes confirmed to our sister blog Show Tracker this morning that sweet George O’Malley will no longer be a part of our lives on Thursday nights.

Ah, well, we knew we needed to get out more – and now we know where we’ll be headed: the Mark Taper Forum.

Culture Monster has learned that Knight will play Leo Frank in the Donmar Warehouse production of “Parade,” which will open at the Mark Taper Forum on Oct. 24 (for those who really love, Knight, previews start Sept. 24).

Knight will star as Leo Frank in the 1998 musical, co-conceived by Hal Prince with a book by Alfred Uhry (“Driving Miss Daisy”) and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (“13”). Tony-winner Rob Ashford will direct and choreograph the show, which tells the true story of the arrest, conviction and lynching of Leo Frank in Atlanta after the Civil War.

The actor’s TV fans may not be aware that Knight has quite a bit of stage cred, appearing on Broadway in 2001 in “Tartuffe” as well as in “Noises Off” with Patti LuPone. Earlier reports had speculated that Knight would be Broadway bound after his departure from "Grey's," based on his participation in a reading of “Lend Me a Tenor." But ha! His first stop will be L.A., not New York.

"I am very fortunate to return to the theater playing Leo Frank in this incredible, acclaimed production of ‘Parade,’" Knight said. “After a five-year break, it feels great to be on stage again.”

OK, take a deep breath, fans: Tickets don’t go on sale until June 26. But Culture Monster will keep you posted on everything happening with "Parade" and Knight.

T.R. Knight Speaks Out: "Leaving Grey's Was Not Easy" - Jun 19, 2009 11:29
Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and T.R. Knight have confirmed that Knight is leaving the ABC drama.

"Leaving Grey's Anatomy was not an easy decision for me to make," Knight said in a statement on Friday. "I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to play this character [Dr. George O'Malley] and will miss my fellow cast and crew very much. I continue to wish them the very best, and wholeheartedly thank all of the fans who have supported me and the show with such passion and enthusiasm."

Reports had speculated Knight asked out of his contract three years early in the wake of lackluster storylines for George. Rhimes has attributed Knight's lack of storylines to "the ebbs and flows" of working with an ensemble cast.

In her own statement confirming Knight's departure, Rhimes said, "I think I speak for the entire Grey's Anatomy family when I say we wish T.R. Knight the best in his future endeavors. He is an incredibly talented actor and a person whose strength of character is admired by all of us."

In the May season finale, George — while en route to a new career as an Army medic — was hit by a bus and profoundly and critically disfigured in the process. The character's fate likely will be revealed to have died. Rhimes has dismissed any talk of recasting the role with a new actor as "ridiculous."

Katherine Heigl was also suspected to be leaving Grey's, but recent reports indicate the actress will return as Izzie come Season 6.
